A message of warmth

David,

As we enter a season of warmth, holiday lights, and festive celebrations, how many of us have faced a New York winter without a warm coat?

That's the reality for many New Yorkers in our city, especially those experiencing homelessness or financial insecurity.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

For the last 31 years, we have channeled the generosity of our city into our annual Coat Drive. Last year we distributed our two millionth coat, and this year our goal is to collect 100,000 new or gently used coats for our Community Partners, which include social service agencies, public schools, and transitional housing shelters.

Whether you're new to Coat Drive or you've been collecting for years, we hope you'll help us spread the warmth this winter!

Drop off Coats

Whether brand new or gently used, a warm coat is essential to surviving winter in NYC. Donate a coat at hundreds of drop-off locations citywide between now and December 31.

Collect Coats

Increase your impact by running a collection. Rally your friends, family, and coworkers to join your efforts and help us reach this year's goal of 100,000 coats.

Next week is #GivingTuesday, and we're on a mission to keep New Yorkers warm for the holidays. While donated coats go a long way to fulfilling the 100,000+ requests we've already received from homeless shelters, public schools, and other nonprofits, we also rely on generous donations to purchase brand new coats at wholesale prices.

Dear David,

New Yorkers like you inspired us when you packed 1.5 million meals this year on 9/11, and again when you transformed the learning environment for thousands of NYC students on Cares Day.

And yesterday, you helped us exceed our #GivingTuesday goal of $50,000 towards the purchase of warm winter coats. We raised just over $55,000! With a match from the Diane and Dorothy Brooks Foundation, that became over $105,000!

More than five thousand of your fellow New Yorkers are now better equipped to send their kids to school, commute to work, and brave the cold this season.

With the money raised so far this year, we'll be able to add 15,000 coats to our total. Thousands more have been donated by individuals and organizations across the five boroughs. Our goal this year is 100,000 coats, so continue to spread the word and encourage your friends and family to contribute!

It's more than a coat in a box.

The New York Cares Coat Drive is a longstanding city tradition, but while many New Yorkers recognize the shivering statue, very few know her story.

Join us again this year as we take you inside the drive at our Coat Drive Pop Up! You'll have an interactive coat donation experience where you can drop off your coats, see behind the scenes of the drive, and write a thoughtful note to the New Yorker who will ultimately receive your coat.

More than one million New Yorkers live in food-insecure households. That is one out of every eight residents and 18% of children. Every year New York Cares partners with high-impact food pantries and soup kitchens in all five boroughs to help deliver and serve meals to our neighbors in need.

In the last year our volunteers have:

served nearly 500,000 hot meals
provided nearly 200,000 pantry packages to food-insecure individuals and families
grown over 4,000 pounds of fresh produce for low-income communities through our Farm-to-Pantry initiative.

Donating to New York Cares supports volunteer programming aimed at addressing hunger and other vital needs in the communities we serve. Our network of over 52,000 volunteers tutor students, revitalize our public parks and gardens and provide time and resources to the city's elderly population.

The latest on our response to COVID-19

"We received a phone call from a client who said, 'Do you know the young man who dropped off food for me? I tried to chase him down the street to thank him!' We were trying to limit face to face contact, but the seniors were so grateful they were trying to track down volunteers to thank them.

Despite being isolated, they didn't feel forgotten. We got phone calls from seniors crying, thanking us, telling us it meant so much that they received the food."

Hi David,

Over the last few weeks, we've all experienced several highs and significant lows: from the disruption of our daily lives and loss of life and the sounds of clapping heard around the city at 7:00 pm recognizing our essential workers and stories of New Yorkers coming forward to help their communities.

We are so grateful for your support as we face the needs of our city head on.

Our Impact

Since our COVID-19 relief efforts began a month ago, more than 2,000 volunteers have devoted approximately 5,600 hours on nearly 500 projects. In total, more than 165,000 meals were distributed to New Yorkers in need.

The best news? We''re just getting started.

Program Updates

We are currently contacting hundreds of organizations to identify ways volunteers can alleviate hunger, support the physical and mental health of NYC communities, and aid students who are learning remotely.

Highlights:

100 new projects are being planned to support COVID-19 relief efforts and leadership opportunities for these are being added daily. Interested in leading projects? Become a Team Leader.
Later this week, our new Phone Bank Volunteer Program will launch to provide wellness checks for vulnerable populations and technical support to students who are using technology from the Department of Education. More to come!
Next week, we will begin offering opportunities for volunteers to support our remote learners through programs such as tutoring. Search using our location filter Virtual?at that time.

Important Reminders

Remember to wear a face covering when volunteering. People who do not show symptoms may still be able to spread COVID-19. Be sure to wear one whenever you leave home and cannot maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others.

We are entrusting all of our volunteers to adhere to our health requirements to keep New Yorkers safe, whether it is by staying home or by taking the precautions we prescribe for our on-the-ground service projects.

On November 10, New York Cares celebrates you and the tens of thousands of Acts of Resilience that you've helped carry out since March. You've shown us once again that, in moments of crisis and upheaval, one thing remains constant: New Yorkers show up for one another in times of crisis.

Audrey Puente will emcee our virtual Gala, and there will be recorded messages from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Willie Geist, Brian Stokes Mitchell and '69 NY Met Ed Kranepool. In addition, you'll see video highlights of New York Cares' work over the past eight months, interviews with partners, volunteers, and staff, and you'll even have the opportunity to support New York Cares' programs financially.

On November 10, New York Cares celebrates you and the tens of thousands of Acts of Resilience that you've helped carry out since March. You've shown us once again that, in moments of crisis and upheaval, one thing remains constant: New Yorkers show up for one another.

Audrey Puente will emcee our virtual Gala, and there will be recorded messages from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Willie Geist, and '69 NY Met Ed Kranepool. In addition, you'll see video highlights of New York Cares' work over the past eight months, interviews with partners, volunteers, and staff, and you'll even have the opportunity to support New York Cares' programs financially.

Yesterday, we teamed up with Mott Haven Community Partnership to distribute more than 300 brand new coats to men, women and children in the South Bronx. All thanks to supporters like you - 2,200 and counting!

New Cleaning Requirements
COVID-19 requires extra precautions this year. Before heading out with your coat(s), make sure coats are:

Freshly laundered (at the highest possible temperature)
Stored in a dark plastic bag or a box to minimize contact

We''re partnering with Sauce Pizzeria to share the love with NYC families impacted by COVID-19!

Dear David,

Food security isn''t just about having enough to eat. It''s about dignity. It''s about comfort. It''s about the normalcy of sitting down to a meal with your family. And what''s more normal in New York City than sharing a pizza?

Parents experiencing food insecurity don''t always get a lot of choice in what to feed their families, and opportunities for special treats are rare. That''s why New York Cares has partnered with Sauce Pizzeria to help bring meals and comfort to families in NYC who have been impacted by COVID-19. Sauce has donated more than 2,000 pizzas to families experiencing food insecurity during the pandemic so far, and also provided food for frontline workers and Black Lives Matter protestors.

Now more than ever, we are called to make a difference. You can give some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers another option to feed their families, providing a meal that is not only nutritious but helps to restore a small sense of normalcy and comfort during a difficult time.

When you donate $20, Sauce will send two pizzas (serving eight people) to our community partners serving New Yorkers in need. They''ve already donated hundreds of pizzas with hundreds more to go!

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a day of global unity in response to the unprecedented impacts of COVID-19. Thousands of New Yorkers are experiencing food insecurity for the first time, and those who were already hungry still struggle. With over one-third of NYC's food pantries closed due to the current crisis, the strain on those who remain open is significant as demand increases, and lines grow longer.

The latest on our response to COVID-19

Your health and safety is our top priority

Hi David,

We know that as the conditions in our city change, it can be hard to know how to help while keeping yourself safe and following social distancing guidelines. We are committed to ensuring you are supported in keeping fellow New Yorkers healthy, whether that's by staying home if feeling unwell or uncomfortable, or continuing to volunteer on projects with new safety measures in place.

As the city's lead organization designated by New York City Emergency Management to mobilize volunteers in cases of citywide emergencies, we are in regular communication with city agencies on how our volunteers can make the most direct and meaningful impact at this time while taking necessary precautions. Most recently, we have been working with Community Partners to ensure that city guidance is followed to slow the spread of COVID-19 by implementing new safety requirements for each of our project locations.

We are asking for your support on these efforts by following additional health and safety guidelines for volunteers when deciding whether or not to attend a project. Please familiarize yourself with these requirements before attending a project.

If any of the following conditions apply to you, we ask that you not sign-up for any of our projects at a Community Partner location for the time being and instead stay at home:

If you currently have a cough, fever, or any respiratory illness
If you currently have a heart condition, lung disease, diabetes, or any other serious health condition, or are over the age of 65
If you or anyone in your household have traveled to China, Iran, South Korea, Japan, or Europe in the past two weeks
If you or anyone in your household have been in close contact with anyone who is confirmed to have COVID-19.

The most important message we want to share is that your health comes first: both physical and mental. Please reach us at info@newyorkcares.org with any specific questions or concerns about health and safety and take care of yourselves and your families.

On October 8, New York Cares, in partnership with Waldorf Astoria New York, will present Cares Night In, a virtual event where you will learn the art of mixology from one of the world's most storied bar programs. Hosted by the Rising Leaders Council, renowned bartender Elliott Clark will lead us through creating some of Waldorf Astoria New York''s classic cocktails from the comfort of your home.

Cares Night In will be an evening to remember whether you've curated the perfect bar cart, are looking for a new cocktail recipe or just want to learn more about mixology. It''s also a fun activity that benefits a great cause, so consider gifting a ticket to a friend!

There are two ways to participate. The base ticket includes access to the 45-minute event while the advanced option includes a custom keepsake mixology set with engravings of both The Towers of Waldorf Astoria and New York Cares. Before recent Black Lives Matter protests, New York Cares was working toward an understanding and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Working with DEI consultants, holding employee unconscious bias workshops, and running internal committees helped pave the way. However, we saw that we needed to do more to address this critical issue, and decided that we needed a major organizational shift. In July 2019, we welcomed Chief Talent Officer Nyisha Holliday to our senior leadership team. Over the last year, Nyisha has helped our organization view every decision through a new lens of equity.

Below is an update from Nyisha and Executive Director Gary Bagley, on where New York Cares is heading on DEI, and how we are examining our progress in our commitment to equity through service, from the inside out.

We set the tone for our workplace culture.

In the words of leadership and management expert John C. Maxwell, "Everything rises and falls with leadership." And we agree.

We knew that a talent officer needed to have a seat at our senior leadership table. Someone who could help provide an equitable view of the employee experience. Someone who could help us remain accountable as we prioritized DEI to employees, community partners, volunteers, donors and the communities we serve.

In our recent statement against racism and discrimination, it was important that we remained authentic and acknowledged that there is much more work to be done. We identified diversity, equity, and inclusion as an aspirational value. We knew we valued it, but even more importantly, had a growing duty to embrace it.

To embody those values, we continue to have difficult and vulnerable conversations with staff, senior leadership, and our board. We have observed that a lot of the work that really moves the needle is not the work that is upfront and showy.

We are putting resources, time, and effort into making DEI happen.

To ensure that our aspirations are operationalized internally, a cultural shift is critical.

Currently, we are:

Increasing the diversity of our leadership team as positions become available
Placing DEI competency as a preferred qualification in our hiring process
Pursuing additional cultural competency and anti-racism training for all staff, including the senior leadership team and Board of Directors
Setting DEI competency as a measure of job performance

These bullet points summarize our internal starting points. How we approach DEI within our organization also directly informs how New York Cares shows up in the communities we serve.

Another key strategy is to have a more focused impact in the neighborhoods that need it most.

Due to structural racism, these communities continue to be hardest hit by food insecurity, education inequities, and income inequities. In order to ensure we are entering communities as servants and not saviors, we first need to listen, understand, and see how racism manifests itself.

We will be sharing more about how we are approaching this work and invite you to follow along as we continue these internal and external initiatives.

Doing DEI work is a marathon. It is a difficult and joyful journey that we are committed to taking together.

The latest on our response to COVID-19

Our city is at its best when we work together to address the most pressing needs of our communities.

Hi David,

New Yorkers step up in times of uncertainty. It happened after 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy and we are seeing the same in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

We know our work is vital now more than ever as our city's most vulnerable residents are disproportionately affected. As the city's lead agency designated by New York City Emergency Management for mobilizing volunteers in cases of citywide emergencies, we are staying in regular communication with city agencies on how we can make the most direct and meaningful impact at this time.

We are committed to harnessing the passions of caring New Yorkers in a way that supports their safety and the safety of the people we serve. Due to the essential and immediate needs of our programs, New York Cares has not canceled all programming at this time, unless a partner has chosen to do so. We continue to take our lead from NYC Health and the NYC Department of Education.

We believe in facilitating vital service opportunities if Community Partners remain open and volunteers are ready and able to meet that need in a safe environment. In partnership with nonprofits and schools, we are continuing to identify ways this can be done in accordance with city guidance.

The health and safety of our volunteers, Team Leaders, and the people we serve remains our top priority. Here are some of the measures New York Cares is taking currently:

Connecting with our partners in City government to understand the criteria for providing safe environments for volunteers.
Creating health and safety guidelines for volunteers and Team Leaders to make for the most effective volunteer engagements
Identifying additional programming needs with Community Partners, specifically focused on issues such as hunger and homelessness.
Instructing staff to work remotely and transitioning our office volunteer orientations to digital sessions.
Providing regular communications from NYC Health to volunteers and Team Leaders about the importance of staying informed and practicing preventive measures.
Reducing the maximum capacity of certain projects, in accordance with city guidance.

We continue to be awed by the volunteers, Team Leaders and staff for their ongoing efforts to keep their fellow New Yorkers healthy, whether that's by staying home if feeling unwell or uncomfortable, or volunteering while following the guidance from NYC Health.

We acknowledge that there will be long term effects as a result of COVID-19 and remain committed to supporting the needs of our partners while ensuring the safety of our volunteers and the communities we serve.

New Cleaning Requirements
COVID-19 requires extra precautions this year. Before heading out with your coat(s), make sure coats are:

Freshly laundered (at the highest possible temperature)
Stored in a dark plastic bag or a box to minimize contact

The latest on our response to COVID-19

Hi David,

You've likely heard in the news about a novel (new) coronavirus (COVID-19) that has impacted communities worldwide. As a New York Cares volunteer, we know you are invested in helping fellow New Yorkers and might be wondering what this means for our programming.

While there have been two confirmed cases in New York State (one of which is in NYC), public health officials indicate that the risk to New Yorkers is still low. NYC Health (Department of Health & Mental Hygiene) is the city agency that leads our city's response to public health concerns. We are monitoring the situation very closely and will continue to follow their guidance.

Currently, there is no direction that would cause us to adjust our programming. Should guidance change, we will respond accordingly and communicate our plans to volunteers.

To keep our communities healthy, following standard winter-cold guidelines are still recommended as you go about your daily routine. As always, if you are feeling unwell, you should stay home and rest. If you're unable to make it out to a project, send your Team Leader a note ahead of time.

The latest on our response to COVID-19

Hi David,

Since New York Cares began our COVID-19 relief efforts last month, volunteers have helped prep and/or deliver nearly 20,000 meals and over 3,000 bags of food to New Yorkers in need. This is a testament to the spirit of our city and the power of volunteers!

With NY on PAUSE extended until April 29, we know our response continues to be a lifeline for the city's most vulnerable.

Program Updates

We''re continuing to focus on addressing hunger, supporting the physical and mental health of NYC communities, and assessing how volunteers can best aid students who are learning remotely.

Most importantly, setting up the technology and background screenings in these remote settings to protect the safety of everyone involved. We expect to have projects more widely available in the next two weeks. At that time, available opportunities will appear under the location filter Virtual on our search page.

Help Keep New Yorkers Safe

As the situation evolves, we have been adapting and updating our health and safety requirements, in line with federal, state, and city guidance. The direction to volunteers from our city is clear.

Some volunteers have expressed frustration with these restrictions and feel that they are unfair and discriminatory. We hear your concerns and believe it''s important to emphasize why these restrictions are in place.

In an emergency as serious as the COVID-19 outbreak in NYC, public health must take priority. In fact, doctors and nurses on the ground say that the number one way to support them is to follow social distancing recommendations and health guidelines.

In our city, there are a limited number of hospital beds, staff, and supplies. On top of the normal daily influx of patients to emergency rooms, thousands more are flooding our medical system due to COVID-19.

If individuals meeting the above criteria do not adhere to these health and safety requirements, they are at a greater risk of COVID-19 infection. As a result, our healthcare system is at risk of not being able to provide the necessary life-saving care that is required for medical emergencies.

We are entrusting all volunteers and Team Leaders to do their part to adhere to our requirements to keep New Yorkers safe. Whether that''s by staying home or taking the precautions we require for our on-the-ground projects.

A season filled with warmth

In 31 years, we''ve never tired of witnessing the generosity of New Yorkers. From collecting donations to sorting coats and raising funds, your hard work ensured that hundreds of thousands didn''t have to make the choice between staying warm and meeting other urgent needs this winter.

In all, we collected 94,960 coats for 650 nonprofits and schools across NYC!

NYC Community Schools received 10,000 coats
Financial donations allowed us to purchase over 52,000 coats
Nearly a third of coats went to partners in The Bronx

While the Coat Drive has wrapped for the season, many of the communities we serve still face obstacles to meet basic needs. In December 2019, there were 62,590 homeless individuals, including 14,792 families with 22,013 children, sleeping each night in the New York City municipal shelter system.

2019 Highlights ?

Warming Hearts at PS 188 M

The Coat Drive began with a kick-off event at PS 188 M, a partner school where many of the students are experiencing homelessness or live in temporary housing. In total, we donated 10,000 coats to Community Schools in partnership with the Department of Education. Check out coverage by CBS Local and amNewYork!

Spending Christmas Eve at GMHC

Thanks to you, hundreds of coats were distributed at our first-ever Christmas Eve coat distribution at Gay Men''s Health Crisis. Check out the New York Daily New''s story about the event and coverage from amNewYork.

Our two largest public collection partners, the NYPD and the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association (GNYADA), for opening their doors to generous New Yorkers dropping off coats.
A special thanks to Halstead, our largest private collector, who contributed over 4,000 coats.
Noah NY served as a public collection site, offering a special commemorative patch and a 20% discount to anyone who donated a coat. They also donated 100% of the proceeds of a special holiday shirt collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation to New York Cares.

Stand with Students shows our students and families that there are still people out there who believe in them, who are rooting for them, and who want to help them succeed."

NYC students face many challenges this fall. Aside from making up for lost learning time, students in communities deeply impacted by COVID-19 have experienced a great deal of trauma. Unsurprisingly, those most affected live in immigrant communities and communities of color.

While families, schools, and teachers continue to do everything they can to support students, they face obstacles of their own: school budget cuts, rising unemployment rates, and the challenge of keeping students safe and learning in an uncertain time.

Stand with Students is our new initiative to support NYC students and schools during the 2020-2021 school year. As both a fundraising campaign and yearlong theme for our education programming, Stand with Students sends our kids a simple message:

You are not alone.

New York Cares Program Manager Dana teaches a virtual art lesson to students.

We''re kicking things off with an event on August 27, where volunteers will help pack backpacks full of supplies donated by New York Life, along with PPE, for distribution to our school partners in the South Bronx, East Brooklyn, and Queens.

As the school year continues, New York Cares will continue to support schools with a variety of volunteer programs, including virtual tutoring, enrichment, social-emotional learning, parent and caregiver engagement, college preparation, and more.

We''re partnering with Sauce Pizzeria to share the love with NYC families impacted by COVID-19!

Dear Levi,

Food security isn''t just about having enough to eat. It''s about dignity. It''s about comfort. It''s about the normalcy of sitting down to a meal with your family. And what''s more normal in New York City than sharing a pizza?

Parents experiencing food insecurity don''t always get a lot of choice in what to feed their families, and opportunities for special treats are rare. That''s why New York Cares has partnered with Sauce Pizzeria to help bring meals and comfort to families in NYC who have been impacted by COVID-19. Sauce has donated more than 2,000 pizzas to families experiencing food insecurity during the pandemic so far, and also provided food for frontline workers and Black Lives Matter protestors.

Now more than ever, we are called to make a difference. You can give some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers another option to feed their families, providing a meal that is not only nutritious but helps to restore a small sense of normalcy and comfort during a difficult time.

When you donate $20, Sauce will send two pizzas (serving eight people) to our community partners serving New Yorkers in need. They''ve already donated hundreds of pizzas with hundreds more to go!

Before recent Black Lives Matter protests, New York Cares was working toward an understanding and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Working with DEI consultants, holding employee unconscious bias workshops, and running internal committees helped pave the way. However, we saw that we needed to do more to address this critical issue, and decided that we needed a major organizational shift. In July 2019, we welcomed Chief Talent Officer Nyisha Holliday to our senior leadership team. Over the last year, Nyisha has helped our organization view every decision through a new lens of equity.

Below is an update from Nyisha and Executive Director Gary Bagley, on where New York Cares is heading on DEI, and how we are examining our progress in our commitment to equity through service, from the inside out.

We set the tone for our workplace culture.

In the words of leadership and management expert John C. Maxwell, "Everything rises and falls with leadership." And we agree.

We knew that a talent officer needed to have a seat at our senior leadership table. Someone who could help provide an equitable view of the employee experience. Someone who could help us remain accountable as we prioritized DEI to employees, community partners, volunteers, donors and the communities we serve.

In our recent statement against racism and discrimination, it was important that we remained authentic and acknowledged that there is much more work to be done. We identified diversity, equity, and inclusion as an aspirational value. We knew we valued it, but even more importantly, had a growing duty to embrace it.

To embody those values, we continue to have difficult and vulnerable conversations with staff, senior leadership, and our board. We have observed that a lot of the work that really moves the needle is not the work that is upfront and showy.

We are putting resources, time, and effort into making DEI happen.

To ensure that our aspirations are operationalized internally, a cultural shift is critical.

Currently, we are:

Increasing the diversity of our leadership team as positions become available
Placing DEI competency as a preferred qualification in our hiring process
Pursuing additional cultural competency and anti-racism training for all staff, including the senior leadership team and Board of Directors
Setting DEI competency as a measure of job performance

These bullet points summarize our internal starting points. How we approach DEI within our organization also directly informs how New York Cares shows up in the communities we serve.

Another key strategy is to have a more focused impact in the neighborhoods that need it most.

Due to structural racism, these communities continue to be hardest hit by food insecurity, education inequities, and income inequities. In order to ensure we are entering communities as servants and not saviors, we first need to listen, understand, and see how racism manifests itself.

We will be sharing more about how we are approaching this work and invite you to follow along as we continue these internal and external initiatives.

Doing DEI work is a marathon. It is a difficult and joyful journey that we are committed to taking together.
