Happy New Year! To start 2020 off strong, we're unveiling our NEW roadmap to advance diversity, equity and inclusion with the launch of our newsletter - DEI Dish.
DEI Dish will showcase our commitment to increase diversity, advance gender equity and foster inclusion. Our plan is built on three pillars:
1. Diversity is central to celebrating differences in an inclusive workplace culture.
2. Equity ensures everyone has access to the same opportunities.

NEW's latest research study has launched! 'Elevating the Latina experience in corporate America,'' produced in partnership with Latinariffic, is now available on our website.
Through focus groups where women were encouraged to tell their stories, we dove into the issues that make Latinas' employee experience so different from the mainstream. This report breaks down the challenges and biases they face, the strengths they bring to the table, and lays out concrete solutions for improving the inclusion of Latina women in the corporate workplace. It's a must-read for anyone in the DE&I space, and for anyone who simply wants to better support Latina coworkers and team members.

On this last day of Pride, NEW celebrates the victory that was achieved for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Supreme Court earlier this month. 29 states have failed to protect LGBTQIA+ Americans against discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. On June 15, a Supreme Court decision ruled that any such discrimination is unlawful under the 1964 Civil Rights act, protecting millions of Americans from workplace discrimination simply for being who they are.
We laud this key step on the path to strong protections for communities which have been regularly legislated and discriminated against. There is more work to be done, but for now, we celebrate this historic victory, and during Pride month no less!

Today, March 31, marks the day into 2020 that women had to work on average to make up the money they lost in 2019 by being paid less than their male counterparts. Unfortunately, when the numbers are tallied at the end of 2020, there is every reason to believe things will be even worse next year.
The Pew Research Center has found that more women than men work the federal minimum wage, and the National Women's Law Center went as far as saying that "Low wage jobs are women's jobs," finding that women are 58% of those that make less than $11 an hour - those jobs hit particularly hard by the current crisis.?
So we all must act. On this Equal Pay Day, NEW President and CEO Sarah Alter brings the facts, and suggests what we all can do to fight for pay equity. Read her thoughts about Equal Pay Day at our blog.?

NEW members know that women shine as leaders, and in the current crisis, women are stepping up everywhere you look. As publications like The Hill and Forbes noted last week, countries with women in the lead are standing out for their cool, calm, and collected response Coronavirus in their nations.
The arguable frontrunner for best response is Jacinda Arden of New Zealand, who has protected the island nation with swift restrictions that have kept the country''s death toll to 13 as of this writing. Her motto - "Go hard and go early." There is now belief that New Zealand could be the first country to eliminate the virus completely from its shores.
The leadership of these powerful women is a beacon of hope. The rest of the world is taking notice - in the top seat of leadership, women are leading the pack.

It appears the myth that diversity and inclusion efforts negatively affect profits is unfortunately alive and well among shareholders, based on analysis by Kim Elsesser at Forbes. After analyzing three studies of investor behavior, she found that shareholders consistently factor efforts for diversity as the diametric opposite of efforts for profit, and assume companies that prioritize DE&I efforts are spending time on something "needless." Corporate responsibility, for example, is seen as a "signal of waste." Or that appointing more women to boards means the "the firm...is prioritizing diversity. And if the firm is prioritizing diversity, then it must be de-prioritizing shareholder value maximization."
At NEW, we know this is patently untrue. Advancing All Women is just good business, and studies continue to back us up. But clearly, there is myth-busting work to be done to destroy the preconception that DE&I efforts are "wasteful" and negatively affect the bottom line.

This week on the Network of Executive Women blog, NEW President and CEO Sarah Alter shares her thoughts about our organization's place in the current moment. She discusses what we have done to support our Black friends, coworkers, and allies of persons of color, and what comes next - as well as what allies can do to educate themselves.
"Over the last few weeks, we here at NEW have been transfixed by the events which have drawn the eye of the entire nation. As an organization devoted to advancing all women and supporting diversity and inclusion, we cannot help but want to support the Black community during this impossibly difficult time.
But we, like many, have hope for the future. We are committed to supporting women of color as part of our mission - and we want to do more."
Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won, you earn it and win it in every generation.

57%. That's how many Americans feel we still have more work to do to create a gender-equal society, according to a study released by Pew Research on July 7. According to Fortune, that's up from Pew's last study three years ago.
This movement is a thing worth celebrating. More and more Americans are behind the cause of equality than ever before. The study also pointed to equity in the workplace - in equal pay and hiring practices - as the bellwether for Americans of whether men and women are truly equal.
It wasn't all good news - the study also revealed the striking statistic that 3 in 10 American men feel that greater equality for women has come at their own expense, which keys in the importance of male allies in this fight. And as for whether the feminist movement has directly benefited the lives of individual women, the general consensus is that white women have benefited most of all. For women of color, the case for stronger, more conscious support is underscored yet again.
But a final positive note to end on - 78% of Americans now support the Equal Rights Act. Support for women, in the workplace and outside it, appears to only be growing - though there is still so much more to do!
