Click here Exploring patient and clinician factors influencing the involvement of dietitians in ED treatmentOpportunity for non-dietetic clinicians to participate in researchYou are invited to participate in a study being conducted by researchers at the Boden Collaboration for Obesity, Nutrition, Exercise and Eating Disorders at the University of Sydney. Researchers are conducting a study to examine to what extent clinicians’ decision to involve a dietitian in a patient’s eating disorder treatment is influenced by: (1) patient characteristics and (2) clinician beliefs. The results of this study will be used to enhance the provision of multi-disciplinary treatment for patients with an eating disorder, particularly in light of the recent enhancement to Medicare-subsidised sessions for individuals with an eating disorder. If you are a non-dietetic clinician currently working with individuals with an eating disorder, you are asked to complete a survey via the link below which will take approximately 45 minutes. You can save your responses and return to complete the survey if you need to. Your responses to the survey are anonymous and confidential. Further details are provided in the participant information sheet. The survey and participant information sheet can be accessed here https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=R7HFMRN4A9. The survey is open until midnight 21st June 2020. The ethical aspects of this study have been approved by the HREC of the University of Sydney (2020/131). No images? Click here Australia-wide online program for body image concernsDear Members, A free online program, I am Media Smart, is now live and open to all Australians aged 13-25 years who wish to improve their body image. https://mediasmart.flinders.edu.au This new study builds on the award-winning Media Smart Online research with women aged 18-25 where MS was found to: reduce eating disorder (ED) onset by 66% (in those not meeting diagnosis at baseline) and increase remission rates by 75% (in those meeting diagnosis at baseline) relative to controls; lower six ED risk factors; and reduce the risk of a range of related symptoms (e.g., depressive symptoms; thoughts about self-harm). While MS Online is intended to be a prevention program for those at risk of an ED or who want to improve their body image, it is also found to be helpful as an early intervention program for those already with an eating disorder. There are two aims of this new study: 1) To see if the program is beneficial for a wider audience (people aged 13-25 of any gender) than our first trial (women aged 18-25) 2) To compare outcomes for a weekly release of the modules vs a flexible rate of program completion (user chooses own rate). Participation is confidential and fully completed through the website. It involves: consenting to participate, completing a baseline survey, being randomly allocated to one of 3 programs (Media Smart groups are 8 modules, Body image tips are a single email), completing the survey 8 weeks later, 6 and 12 months later. The groups are:
As an appreciation for participants’ time, a $30 gift voucher will be sent to those who complete all 4 surveys. Those allocated to the body image tips condition will have the option of completing Media Smart at the conclusion of the trial. This research has been approved by the Flinders University Social and Behavioural Research Ethics Committee (Project 8287). Those aged 16-25 can give consent to participate themselves. For those aged 13-15 years, parental consent is required. This is all done online. For those working in health, education, and related settings, it would be most appreciated if you could please communicate this research widely through your networks.
If you have any further questions or comments, please contact: Dr Simon Wilksch Senior Research Fellow in Psychology Flinders University Simon.Wilksch@flinders.edu.au
