Welcome to the December edition of Music Australia’s eNews.
Well, what a crazy year that was?! In this edition we examine some of the fallout, such as the number of musicians reportedly looking to leave their careers (which in the UK is anywhere from 34% to 64%). One of the defining issues of 2020 has been mental health and wellbeing, and we joined a number of organisations in turning this focus onto music industry workers. In recent news on our Musicians & Addiction project, we were grateful to receive a cracking international review in the New York Journal of Books. Reviews like this show that if Music Australia chooses a topic to focus on we can make international impact. One of the book’s fans, the independent podcast The Music Real, latched onto Rob Cannon’s chapter on applying sports psychology to reduce performance anxiety among musicians, and how musicians would benefit if we considered them like elite athletes. The Music Real have interviewed Rob about the chapter and his work, which can be accessed here. We would also like to thank the Australian Institute of Music and St Kilda Writers Week for offering to organise events around the book in the first quarter of 2021.
Articles in this edition examine the following topics:
- Covid’s impact on Australian musicians which looks deeply concerning;
- The NSW and Victorian Governments’ recent arts recovery plans. Since this article was written previously committed federal funding now appears to be flowing through;
- Music: Count Us In’s 2020 Celebration Day was a resounding success, and attention now turns to the 2021 program
- News from two other great music education programs run by Musica Viva and the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, including how they negotiated the pandemic;
- South Australia’s Carclew has created a program of music mentoring workshops for young people;
- Budgetary stresses caused by Covid look like exacerbating future debates over arts funding.
Music Australia’s 2020 AGM was held in early November (having been previously canvassed via this eBulletin). If you would like to receive Draft Minutes, simply email me. In that meeting we advised that the continued operation of Music Australia and the Music: Count Us In program beyond April 2021 is dependent on the organisation successfully transitioning from a government funded model to a ‘user pays’ model. The Board of Music Australia will convene in early March to determine whether sufficient income from schools and donations has been received to deliver the 2021 program. If it has not, the program will be wound up and money refunded back to schools (less any transaction costs) and donations passed on to disadvantaged schools to contribute to their music program. If the program is closed, this may also result in the closure of Music Australia.
There are two ways supporters of Music Australia can help us negotiate this transition, both of which are tax deductible. Firstly, if you wish to help us build our financial reserves you could donate directly to Music Australia. Alternatively, and as flagged in the last eNews, if you wish to join me in making a tax deductible donation to help disadvantaged schools participate in our 2021 Music: Count Us In program – please go to our fundraising page on the Raisely website. $30 will enable 30 students in a disadvantaged school to participate in the program next year and helps to fund the program for next year. Thanks to those of you who have already generously donated.
This will be the final eNews for 2020, and we will be taking a break over summer. Our next eNews will be published late March/early April. Thanks for your support in this most challenging of years. We wish you all the very best for the festive season. For more national and international music news don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
All the best,
Paul Saintilan
