Staying Home (for now) and Looking to the Future

It's been six weeks since Gov. Inslee issued Washington's stay at home order, dramatically changing the daily life of all residents. While we remain safer at home MOG is also looking ahead, working on new processes and procedures so the Museum can open safely and stronger than before.

This week the Museum's previously planned spring appeal kicks off. Like other cultural organizations, MOG continues to evolve and create new programs to help people learn about glassmaking and to support working artists in this trying time.

Breakfast at the Cone: June 5, 2020

Sure, it will look a little different, but the fourth annual spring fundraiser Breakfast at the Cone will move forward. MOG is excited to welcome John Oppenheimer, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Columbia Hospitality, as keynote speaker. More to come as we iron out the details of this now virtual event focused on art and business in the community.

Pop-Up Glassblowing and Activities at Museum of Glass

Friday - Sunday | 12-3 pm

Meet up with your friends this Labor Day weekend on MOG''s outdoor plaza for live glassblowing, scavenger hunts, and artmaking activities. In addition to demos operated out of the Mobile Hot Shop, the Museum Store will be open with new items available, and the MOG Education staff will also host a limited amount of hands-on activities, which will vary by day and are free to participate. See the activity schedule below.

Painting on glass jars: Get crafty and make your own art glass to take home.

REN? LALIQUE:
Art Deco Gems from the Steven and Roslyn Shulman Collection

Opening Friday, November 27

The work of Ren? Lalique has been universally hailed as representing the most chic and sophisticated qualities of French Art Deco styles. This incredible group of nearly 200 objects will introduce MOG guests to Lalique's artwork and aesthetic, which helped to define the Art Deco movement in the early twentieth-century.

THE ROBERT M. MINKOFF COLLECTION
GIFTED TO MUSEUM OF GLASS

Museum of Glass has received the Robert M. Minkoff collection, a seminal collection of artwork showcasing the development of glass as a studio and contemporary art medium, and one of the largest private collections of Studio Glass in the country. With the addition of Robert Minkoff's personal collection of more than 400 works of art, the Museum's glass holdings are the largest in the Western United States.

MOG is celebrating this significant gift, and the endowment for its stewardship, with an installation in the Grand Hall, A Glimpse at the Robert M. Minkoff Foundation Collection, now on view. A major exhibition honoring Minkoff and his collection will open in Spring 2022 with an accompanying catalog and educational programming.

PUMPKIN PATCH AT MOG
October 31-November 1

Fall is here! Shop the Pumpkin Patch at MOG for hand-crafted pumpkins created by a variety of local vendors as well as the Museum's Hot Shop Team. Stop by on Saturday, October 30 to create your own beaded spiders and paper bat silhouettes with guidance from MOG educators.

MUSEUM OF GLASS IS REOPENING!
Friday, September 25 | 10am-5pm

The time is finally here. We are excited to reopen with new hours and safety guidelines. Masks are required and we are asking all guests to maintain physical distancing protocols as you return to enjoy the Hot Shop, galleries, and the Store at MOG.

Stay tuned for updates about the Education Studio opening in the coming weeks. Special take-away education activities will be available both onsite and for download on the Museum''s website during this transitional time.

EXHIBITIONS ON VIEW

TRANSPARENCY: AN LGBTQ+ GLASS ART EXHIBITION

Transparency features works by glass artists from the LGBTQ+ community. The exhibition, organized by the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, strives to emphasize the importance of being open about identity, a hallmark of liberty and creative freedom. The artwork was selected by each artist, in keeping with the spirit of self-advocacy and creative self-expression that characterizes Pride.

RICHARD MARQUIS: KEEPERS

Keepers is a late-career survey of work by Richard Marquis, a towering figure in the Studio Glass movement. Marquis is known for extraordinary technique, comic sensibility, bold innovations, and iconoclastic spirit.

Objects in the exhibition were chosen from the artist's comprehensive archives of his art from the 1960s to the present. Marquis calls these pieces his "keepers." The galleries are thematically arranged and include areas of his work that have rarely been exhibited, such as his ceramics and prints.

ALCHEMY 5: TRANSFORMATION IN CONTEMPORARY ENAMELS

"Alchemy" is a term that refers to a seemingly magical power of transmutation as well as the ancient chemical philosophy of turning base metal into gold or silver, can apply to enamel as it is magically transformed by heat.

Organized by The Enamelist Society, this is the 17th Biennial International Juried Enamel Exhibition and 13th International Juried Student Enamel Exhibition. The exhibitions highlight the best in contemporary enamels produced in the last two years.

THINGS ARE HEATING UP!

Even though Museum of Glass is still closed per the direction of public health officials, we are busy making preparations to safely reopen. To protect the health and safety of guests, volunteers, and staff, you will notice a few changes including additional cleaning and suggested directional signage through the galleries and Hot Shop. Also, Museum staff will be donning protective face masks and we will ask that visitors do the same. We hope to announce a specific reopening date soon and look forward to seeing you!

GLASS ART SOCIETY: THE GLASS PLEDGE

Museum of Glass recently signed The Glass Pledge in efforts to help bring inclusivity and diversity to the global glass community. This isn't a short process. It's a committed journey of education and actionable steps, which the Museum will be sharing more on soon. Miss watching artists in action? Tune in to MOG''s Glass Break video series Fridays at 1pm steaming live on the Museum's website. For the month of July MOG will be featuring LGBTQ+ artists with weekly interviews and throwback footage of live glassblowing.

2021 VISITING ARTIST APPLICATIONS

In support of the Museum's mission to ignite creativity and fuel discovery through glass and glassmaking, artists of all disciplines are invited to explore glass as a medium through MOG''s Visiting Artist Residency Program. Since 2002 MOG has welcomed more than 525 internationally-known and emerging artists from around the world. Selected artists will spend up to five days with full use of MOG''s state-of-the-art Hot Shop and the assistance of the acclaimed Hot Shop Team in Tacoma, Washington.

As you may have read, on August 20 Governor Jay Inslee provided guidance that allows Washington museums to open in Phase 2. You''ll be hearing from us soon on plans for reopening. We can''t wait to see you!

Museum of Glass is taking it to the streets by activating the outdoor plaza with live glassblowing, scavenger hunts, and artmaking activities over the next two weekends.

RED HOT 2020 TO BE STREAMED ONLINE

Each year, Museum of Glass invites artists and art enthusiasts to come together in celebration of our shared passion for glass and glassmaking. This year may look a bit different - as the event moves to a virtual platform - but we are excited that this allows us to bring MOG right to your home!

This year''s online event and auction, which is free to join, will run from September 21-28 with a live-streamed program on Saturday, September 26 at 6pm. Looking for a fun activity over the holiday weekend? Explore the outdoor art and architecture of Museum of Glass, the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, and Thea Foss Waterway with MOG''s education staff!

Tours will last about 45 minutes and will include little-known facts about the art and architecture along the waterway. Group size is limited, three timeslots per day, and the cost is $10.
