This edition of #MRAGhomedelivery celebrates the City’s art collection. Did you know it is home to over 6,000 artworks??? Artists include Margaret Olley AC, Nell and Charles Blackman, to name just a very few. You’ve told us how important you think it is to care for and share this important cultural collection, so we’ve created exhibitions and activities which showcase the Collection and the Artist’s within it. Guns to Roses is an exhibition from the MRAG Collection in which artists grapple with major issues that impact on our lives and the world in which we live.

Gun No 1, by Li Hongbo is a central element in this exhibition and key to the exhibition concept, illustrating how artists can create artworks that navigate complex subject matter, such as gun violence, with a gentle delivery.

Welcome Home! Gallery open 4 June 2020

Dear friends,

After a period of closure, we are very excited to welcome you back to the Gallery on 4 June.

As part of the Government’s health guidelines we are opening under reduced services with some restrictions in place to keep everybody safe. This includes the introduction of an online (free) ticket for your visit. This is a restriction put in place while we remain responsive and adaptive to the COVID-19 guidelines. It enables us to maintain reduced numbers in the Gallery and also means you get a unique and intimate experience with our new exhibitions!

Online tickets are available here, on our website and through our Facebook page. You can also click through at the end of this message. We will be taking bookings for two sessions a day and will not be restricting your time at MRAG.

I am now in week two of my new role as Director and look forward to seeing the building come alive again in the coming weeks. Behind the scenes, we’ve installed a new Winter program of exhibitions, embarked on the refurbishment of the café and are about to commence installation of a new sound system. We hope you enjoy the home improvements!

This has been a challenging time for so many people. Art will continue to play an important role in our lives as we navigate our way through these strange days. Through our creative community we will gain new perspectives of this time and we hope to share these reflections with you here at the Gallery in coming months.

Our Gallery will continue to support the artists of Maitland and the creative community up and down the Hunter River. We will continue to bring new ideas and exhibitions from across the country and further afield and we hope you continue to enjoy the showcase of art we have presented online during this time.

What you need to know before you visit:

• From 4 June MRAG will reopen to limited numbers of visitors from 10am to 5pm daily, using a free, timed-entry ticket system.
• Don’t visit if you’re unwell, have experienced cold or flu symptoms in the last 14 days, or have returned from overseas in the last 14 days.
• There is no limit to how long visitors can stay at the Gallery during these hours.
• Seraphine Café remains closed temporarily.
• There are presently no tours or events.
• The Gallery Shop is open, cashless payments preferred.

What the Gallery’s doing to keep everyone safe:

• We’re encouraging everyone to practice good hand hygiene whilst on site.
• Floor markings and signage to help visitors maintain safe distances.
• Visitors with access requirements can still use lifts, and borrow the Gallery’s wheelchair which will be sanitised after each use.
• Enhanced cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants.
• We’ve temporarily limited or removed interactive elements within exhibition spaces.

Japanese artist Kei Takemura repairs broken objects using silk thread, transforming these ‘wounds’ into objects of beauty. In this way Takemura continues the Kintsugi tradition and questions the single-use culture that has come to dominate our contemporary lives.

Additional safety protocols including increased handwashing and the frequent sanitisation of surfaces have been implemented onsite. Welcome Home! Gallery now open!

Little Star is an online exhibition created by artist Todd Fuller.

Zvezdochka, or Little Star, was the 11th dog to be sent into space by  Russia. Like the others in the program, she endured extreme conditions as a scientific experiment into the effects of orbital travel on a living creature.

Whilst there is a pause on regular Gallery programming we’ve created a very special Free Art Sunday activity for you to create at home. In this video MRAG Art Tutor Genevieve shows you how to make a rainbow bouquet inspired by the Waiting for Equality exhibition.

Keg de Souza’s artwork Living Under the Stars (LUTS) relies on the human body being cocooned in a protective tent structure that is reminiscent of the snug play spaces of childhood. The viewer is invited to lie down and look up at the canopy where a light display on a timed sequence mimics the constellations seen in the Southern Hemisphere’s night sky.

Part 3 looks at Made in the light – Happy Cloud and Drips, acquired to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the redevelopment of the Gallery and to celebrate one of Maitland’s highest achievers, Nell, who was inducted into the Maitland City Hall of Fame in 2017.

As I caught the school bus to Maitland Grossmann High School every day, I would dream of being an artist when I grew up. And in my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined that one day I would have a permanent artwork on the outside of
Maitland Regional Art Gallery!

 On the second day the artwork was installed, before it was even lit up, my 12 year old niece told me she saw the happy cloud from her school bus. How cool is that? Dreams on the school bus can come true!  Nell, July 2019

Hi everyone, welcome to a very special edition of #MRAGhomedelivery dedicated to National Reconciliation Week 2020 #NRW2020.

We acknowledge the Wonnarua People as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land upon which MRAG stands and pay our respects to Wonnarua Elders past, present and future.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for us to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme #InThisTogether2020 resonates now more than ever as we rally together in the face of adversity. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Gallery at the first opportunity and in the meantime would love to see how you celebrate reconciliation so please keep in touch.

Whilst the Gallery is closed we are taking a moment to reflect on Stories from Wonnarua Country.

This exhibition featured artworks made by students from seven local schools who explored what it means to them to be living on Wonnarua Country today. The artists were led by their student colleagues who are the leaders of their school-based Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.

Tarro''s Tree of Knowledge 

We all have our own knowledge to share and story to tell. Every student (as well as teachers, parents and school community members) at Tarro Public School has been part of collectively creating this artwork. We wanted to show how individual stories come together to tell the shared story of our amazing and diverse little community. We all live, learn and grow together. Our installation depicts this through the merged representation of two locally found trees – the Spotted Gum and Ironbark.

Artists Emma Langford, Lexzie-Ann Fraser, Estella Walla and Ryleigh Lewis from Tarro Public Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (JAECG) and teacher Danielle Yeend installing Tarro''s Tree of Knowledge in the gallery as part of Stories from Wonnarua Country in June 2019.  This  artwork was created by all K-6 students from Tarro Public School and was supported by parents and community members who assisted with plaiting, weaving, sewing, painting and donating yarn.

This video and soundscape was part of Minimbah, an installation by Maitland High School JAECG in Stories from Wonnarua Country.

Many people in the school came together in the making of this artwork; as the stories of Wonnarua connect us to this land and each other. Our intention for Minimbah (teaching place) is to illustrate a sensory experience – as living on country is not just sitting back, it involves deep connection and interactions between living things.

I am on Wonnarua Country today

Living and breathing the country my ancestors walked is special to me. It strengthens my pride in my First Nations’ ancestry and without fail, reminds me what is important - unwavering links to culture. Ancestral connection to where I live and acknowledging it aloud without fear is something generations of my family could not do. They adapted to survive. The sacrifice of their cultural identity lives within the splattering of sacred sites throughout the Hunter Valley, longing to not be forgotten. I feel grounded in the knowledge still existing in the landscape, in the stories still told and the songlines still travelled.

Use Dr Simone Paterson’s artwork from the Guns to Roses exhibition, as inspiration to create your own mandala out of natural materials. Traditionally used as a meditative practice in Hindu and Buddhist cultures, mandalas are intricately patterned motifs that encourage us to focus and reflect.
