Nebraska campaign submits signatures to put medical cannabis on the ballot Isabella, Exciting news! Last Thursday, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana submitted over 182,000 signatures to the Secretary of State in support of their initiative to legalize medical cannabis for patients with serious health conditions. The campaign needs roughly 121,000 valid signatures to qualify for the November ballot. Donate now to support the medical cannabis campaign in Nebraska! Since last year, the Nebraska team recruited hundreds of volunteers who gathered over 33,000 signatures — including 14,000 collected in just the last two and a half weeks. MPP staff played a central role in the effort and contacted over 35,000 voters to ask them to sign in the final days of the signature drive! We’re confident the campaign collected enough signatures to qualify the initiative for the ballot, but we expect a well-funded opposition effort to emerge, led by politicians like Gov. Pete Ricketts. Patients and families in Nebraska need our help: Can you contribute $25, $50, or $100 to help support families and patients in Nebraska? Let’s make sure the Nebraska team has what they need to see this through and pass a compassionate medical cannabis law in November. Thank you, Campaigns Coordinator Marijuana Policy Project

Show your support for MPP’s fight to end cannabis prohibition and get your shirt today! In our 25th year of changing laws and changing lives, there’s a lot of progress to celebrate and a lot of work still to come. As our nation continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic — and the systemic injustices upheld by oppressive policing and the decades-long war on cannabis — MPP’s mission is more important than ever. To help bring attention to the critical need for further cannabis policy reform, we also encourage you to share photos online wearing the shirt along with the hashtag #MPP25. ?????Thank you for your dedication to justice as MPP continues to advance vital reform efforts on the state and federal levels. Prohibitionists have filed a lawsuit to overturn the legalization law passed by South Dakota voters on Election Day! Please make a donation to South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws' legal defense fund. Dear Logan, Late on Friday, the Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol and a local County Sheriff filed a lawsuit to overturn Amendment A, the marijuana legalization ballot initiative that was approved by 54% of South Dakota voters on Election Day. Governor Kristi Noem is supporting the lawsuit, and she's even using taxpayer dollars to help fund it. If the lawsuit succeeds, Amendment A will be invalidated and legalization would be repealed. This would be a disastrous outcome given that South Dakota’s existing marijuana laws are some of the harshest in the country. The lawsuit argues that the initiative covered too many subjects and required a constitutional convention to be enacted. The good news is this: South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws, the local campaign that passed Amendment A, is confident that they can defeat the lawsuit. Amendment A was carefully drafted and thoroughly vetted last year before the start of the signature drive. But to win in court, the campaign needs to invest in a strong legal defense team...and that’s expensive. Please consider making a contribution directly to South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws. Over the weekend, the campaign raised over $5,500 in small dollar donations, with nearly all the money coming from South Dakota residents. Now, we need Americans across the country to help our friends in the Mount Rushmore State. Since last year, MPP staff have played a central role in this historic campaign, in which South Dakota became the first ever state to simultaneously legalize medical marijuana and legalize marijuana for adults 21 and over. Help ensure that this hard-fought victory is not reversed in court and donate what you can to South Dakotans for Better Marijuana Laws. Thank you so much, Deputy Director Marijuana Policy Project

Hey Isabella, I’ll keep this brief, and I’ll get right to the point: We need your help! Today, we’re wrapping up our fundraising drive to collect signatures across America for letters we’ll be sending to President Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, urging them to support our fight for freedom and racial justice in our country. The war on drugs, and cannabis prohibition in particular, is rooted in racism. And every day it is used to target and disproportionately criminalize Americans from communities of color. Do you agree the time is long overdue to legalize cannabis? We know you do, Isabella. So please, take a stand to help send a strong message to both presidential candidates. Our fundraising deadline strikes at 11:59 p.m. tonight. Tap or click to chip in $5 (or more) today! Sincerely, Steve From: Alex Langer Hey Steve – I just wanted to touch base with you as we wrap up this fundraising drive. I’ve pulled a list of those we’re still hoping to hear from to reach our goal. Will you forward this email to Isabella Young and ask them to consider making a special contribution today to help put us over the top? END-OF-MONTH CONTRIBUTION STATUS I’ll send along some additional records shortly. Alex |

Huge news, Logan: The House is set to vote on the MORE Act — a comprehensive bill to end cannabis prohibition — in just two weeks. That means we’re running out of time to line up votes for this historic legislation that would END federal cannabis prohibition! We still have time to pass the MORE Act, but we can only do it with your help. Can you chip in to help us end cannabis prohibition? Not only will this measure represent a major step forward at a critical time in the fight for criminal justice reform, but it will also empower states to implement programs that can stimulate economic growth when it is urgently needed. Please chip in $5, $25, $50, or whatever amount you can today to support our advocacy on the MORE Act, and let’s make history! Onward,

House of Representatives to vote on historic cannabis legalization bill in September Isabella Young, Earlier today, Congressional leadership announced that a House vote will take place on a comprehensive cannabis legalization bill — the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act — in September. The MORE Act historically passed the House Judiciary Committee last November and has since awaited further action. Please tell your representative to support the MORE Act when it comes up for a vote on the House floor! This important measure addresses two key challenges we currently face. First, it would be a major step forward in criminal justice reform at a critical time as we work to help restore justice to those who have been victimized by the failed war on cannabis. Second, it would empower states to implement programs that can stimulate economic growth when it is urgently needed. Please encourage your representative in Congress to back the MORE Act. Sincerely,

Logan, More than three decades ago, I began my career as a civil rights lawyer, taking on cases involving police brutality and the death penalty. Tragically, the murder of George Floyd by four Minneapolis police officers is just the latest chapter in a long and ugly history of racial oppression that has defined our nation since its inception. ?? I’ve spent my life fighting against this legacy, and it’s this journey that led me to serve as executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project.?? The war on drugs has been weaponized against communities of color for DECADES, with cannabis at the epicenter.?? In states where cannabis is still illegal, prohibition continues to be used as an excuse for oppressive policing. We see this in case after case after case, with statistics clearly demonstrating massive and sustained racial disparities in cannabis arrests and prosecutions.?? We will not fundamentally change policing practices in our country until we move past the war on drugs as it is waged by law enforcement today. We need major criminal justice reform. We need an END to the prohibition of cannabis. ??Cannabis legalization is not the silver bullet to solving all our policing problems, but it is a critical piece of the puzzle. Legalization will remove the pretext for thousands of police stops that happen daily in black and brown communities -- sometimes with fatal consequences. Help us sustain our fight to legalize cannabis. Our work is about securing freedom and fostering justice for all.? Please consider chipping in $5, $10, $25, or $50 today to sustain our vital work. In solidarity,

Isabella, Steve wrote to you recently, and we wanted to follow up, in case you missed his powerful message. During this time or rising awareness and action around longstanding systemic issues continuing to plague our society, it’s imperative that we continue to do our part at MPP to secure freedom and justice for all. For decades, the war on drugs has been used as excuse for oppressive policing that overwhelmingly targets communities of color, and we’ve seen the results. The murder of George Floyd is just the latest chapter in this tragic saga. This ongoing injustice MUST come to an end. Please help sustain our critical work at MPP by supporting us online. >> Here’s a quick look at the facts: When we look at its origins, the prohibition of cannabis has always been rooted in racism rather than science. Back in the early 20th century, anti-cannabis laws were put on the books as a pretext to target Latinos, black jazz musicians, anti-war protestors, and others considered a threat to the established order. It’s outrageous that today, in 2020, we’re still living with the legacy of these racist laws in our criminal justice system. Arrests for possession have plummeted in states that have legalized cannabis for adults, preventing the undue criminalization of countless individuals. Legalization and reform have saved lives and livelihoods and helped to redirect the focus of law enforcement where it’s needed to protect public safety. The prohibition of cannabis must come to an end for our society to move forward. We are not letting up in this fight for a moment. We hope to have you standing with us. - The MPP Team P.S. Every donation makes a direct impact in our work. Please donate $5, $10, $25, or $50 to sustain our fight for freedom and justice.

Logan, We’re almost halfway through the year — and our country is at a crossroads. Our criminal justice system is in need of major reform. No American should spend their life in a vicious loop of injustice for possessing a small amount of cannabis. This year is MPP’s 25th anniversary, and I want to ensure that 2020 is a year where we make the biggest difference possible and continue to advance crucial priorities. In researching groups that oppose legalizing cannabis, like SAM, I’ve noticed something. They have massive resources behind them. From dark money mega-donors to misguided individuals contributing small amounts, prohibitionist groups are still a major force of obstruction to vital reforms. Our goal at the start of the year was to grow our community of passionate Americans, people like you – people who support legalizing cannabis. And I haven’t announced this yet, but I've set a quarterly goal of raising at least $60,000 from grassroots supporters to sustain our work. Right now, I still have a lot more to raise before June 30th. I am looking to raise $20,508 more. That’s why I’m asking you to help us meet our goal by donating just $5 today. We’re not just fighting on the front lines for sensible and humane cannabis laws, but also for the broader cause of securing a future where those in power respect our rights and dignity. From the halls of Congress to state capitals across the country, MPP is working hard to make a difference. But if we’re going to transform this country and end cannabis prohibition, it’s going to take a growing movement of Americans committed to sustaining this fight — a movement that isn’t just passionate about legalizing cannabis, but that will also invest in it. Logan, will you be a part of our movement? Will you chip in anything, even as little as $5, to make sure that we hit our donor goal for the year? It’s worked for anti-cannabis organizations like SAM, and it WILL work for us. We have just 5 days until the end of the month. Please help me raise $20,508 by June 30th. We’re not there yet. But, if we’re going to overcome the obstacles that remain ahead of us, we need your support now more than ever. So please make a donation today. It’s not just MPP that’s counting on you. It’s thousands of people who are victims of cruel and destructive laws. Together, we can end the vicious loop of injustice and legalize cannabis from coast to coast. Sincerely, Steven Hawkins P.S. We must defend the will of the voters in South Dakota Support the legal battle to defend Amendment A. Dear Logan, Last month, South Dakotans approved a constitutional ballot measure, Amendment A, to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older by a significant margin (54% to 46%). South Dakota also approved medical marijuana, making history as the first state to enact both policies on the same day. MPP played a major role in running the campaign. SDBML has already raised over $11,000 from small dollar donors since the lawsuit was filed on November 20. Please help us add to that total. Please help us win this fight. Montana legalization measures will qualify for the ballot Isabella, Last Friday, we got an exciting update out of Big Sky Country: according to numbers tallied by local officials, BOTH legalization initiatives have received enough signatures to qualify for the statewide ballot this fall! That’s really good news. But leaders of the campaign are nervous about the potential emergence of a well-financed opposition effort assisted by groups like SAM. Winning in Montana is not going to be easy, and due to the challenges the campaign faced in the signature drive, they were forced to spend far more than they planned. And now, they’re behind their fundraising goals. Will you help give New Approach Montana the resources they need to continue building support for legalization and defeat the prohibitionists this fall? Any amount you can give will make a difference. Donate directly to the Montana 2020 legalization campaign: A victory in Montana will not only help Montanans. It will also give our movement a huge boost of momentum as we continue to build pressure on Congress to pass a federal legalization law. Now’s a critical time to throw your support behind this important campaign. With gratitude,

Logan, You may have already responded to this urgent call to action over the last week. Thank you, if you have. We need EVERY supporter on board right now. Our mission to end cannabis prohibition has always been about the fight for criminal justice reform – to help save lives and end the use of cannabis possession as a pretext for oppressive policing and sentencing. For years, we’ve been highlighting the millions of lives negatively impacted by racist cannabis laws and the devastating impact that the disparate enforcement of the war on cannabis has wrought in communities of color. The American people are with us. We’re on the right side of history.

Logan, Steve wrote to you recently, and we wanted to follow up, in case you missed his powerful message.

We must defend the will of the voters in South Dakota Support the legal battle to defend Amendment A. Dear Isabella, Last month, South Dakotans approved a constitutional ballot measure, Amendment A, to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older by a significant margin (54% to 46%). Isabella, More than three decades ago, I began my career as a civil rights lawyer, taking on cases involving police brutality and the death penalty.

Montana legalization measures will qualify for the ballot Logan, Last Friday, we got an exciting update out of Big Sky Country: according to numbers tallied by local officials, BOTH legalization initiatives have received enough signatures to qualify for the statewide ballot this fall!

Hey Logan, I’ll keep this brief, and I’ll get right to the point: We need your help! We know you do, Logan. Will you forward this email to Logan Lewis and ask them to consider making a special contribution today to help put us over the top? This is a critical effort to demand our political leaders listen to the vast majority of the American people who support legalizing cannabis! Will you support our effort to gather 100,000 signatures on letters we’ve drafted to President Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to urge them in the strongest possible terms to embrace the full legalization of cannabis? We have JUST DAYS until our end-of-month fundraising deadline, and we still need to raise $4,380 to fund this effort. Tap or click HERE to chip in today. >>> The roots of prohibition lie in racism, and prohibition continues to be used every single day in our country as a justification for over-policing, mass incarceration, and dehumanizing and sometimes deadly police encounters. The time for fundamental reform is NOW. If you agree, please take action today. We’re only as strong as our grassroots support across America, and we have a lot of hard work ahead to get the politicians in Washington to commit to getting the job done. Thank you for any contribution you can help with today. Whether it’s $3, $30, or $300, your support will make a direct impact in our fight for racial justice and individual liberty. Sincerely,

Key new cannabis protections are being considered in Congress. You can help. Click here to support new protections for businesses in adult-use legalization states. Isabella, Currently, federal law enforcement that operates through the U.S. Department of Justice is prohibited from targeting medical cannabis businesses that follow state law. This set of protections has been in place for several years, and we want to see them extended to apply to all full-use cannabis programs and the District of Columbia. It’s a modest step but an important one that can keep people out of trouble and out of prison. Representatives Earl Blumenauer, Tom McClintock, Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Barbara Lee are seeking to add those protections to an appropriations bill under consideration called the CJS (Commerce-Justice-Science) Funding Bill for fiscal year 2021. We want members of Congress to support this important addition. Click here to send a message to your Representative and ask them to support this important protection. Businesses that are considered “essential” during a global pandemic and are following state law should not have to wonder if they will be targeted by federal agents. D.C. businesses should get protections like similar businesses in states with medical programs. Let your Congressional representative hear from you on this. And help us get the word out by forwarding this message to your network!

Logan, Did you know that despite more states legalizing cannabis, arrests for cannabis-related offenses have been on the rise in recent years? Did you know that 25 percent of deadly “no-knock” drug raids over the last seven years involved cannabis? Meanwhile, support among the American people for legalization has hit an all-time high. It’s time to end this insanity, once and for all. It’s time to legalize cannabis across America, to affirm freedom, and bring an end to oppressive policing practices primarily targeting communities of color. Take a stand today. Help us send a strong message to President Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Rush a $5, $10, $25, or $50 special contribution today to help us collect signatures for our letters urging the candidates to embrace cannabis reform! Our fight for reform is a critical component of the greater fight for racial justice in our country. We’re sick and tired of seeing people locked up over non-violent cannabis offenses and witnessing police departments use cannabis to justify deadly police encounters. Help us reach our goal to collect 100,000 signatures on each letter. Right now, it’s only costing us $0.25 for each signature collected. You can see the impact your support will make below. Isabella, We’re almost halfway through the year — and our country is at a crossroads. Isabella, will you be a part of our movement?
