What’s New, Friends?

A few brand new things have happened since the last time we talked. A new year, a new decade...and new ways to express ourselves with candle scents.

The world is a lot—in real life and on the internet—and we’re only on day 15, dear ones! So. We are pushing pause in this second week of the new Roaring 20s, taking a deep breath and starting the new everything.

And, as usual, we have questions. (But you count on us for that, right?) 

What’s new? What’s new with you? What’s new in your business? What are your words for 2020? Where are you putting your focus this year? And, most importantly, what can we do to help? 

We’ll be talking about that all month—on Mom2.com, Made It, and everywhere we are on social—so watch for lots of new ideas and platforms and possibilities there, because that’s where we are.

The Iris Awards Call for Nominations begins today, January 15, 2020, and goes through February 12, 2020. The nominations will be collected/managed by the independent voting firm.

The top nominated individuals/sites/campaigns will be sent to the Nominating Committee to determine a final roster of nominees.

Anyone can nominate, and any parenting blog or platform is eligible for nomination.

So consider what you’ve seen online this year that’s moved you, made you think, made you laugh, maybe even made you act. What shook up the everyday? Who was your must-follow on every social platform? Or perhaps the one that you just can’t stop thinking about…

Think about it. Pick some greatness. Submit it for Iris Awards consideration.

Shannon Watts, Founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Mother of 5

We will have many great keynote speakers this year with us in downtown LA, and we are excited to announce our first today. The ultimate founder, leader and grassroots organizer. 

Shannon Watts is a mother of five and the founder of the nation’s largest grassroots group fighting against gun violence, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Prior to founding Moms Demand Action, Watts was a stay-at-home mom and former communications executive at Fortune 100 companies. The day after the Sandy Hook tragedy, Watts started a Facebook group to unite women to advocate for stronger gun laws to keep their families safe.

The online conversation turned into a grassroots movement with a chapter in every state and, together with its partner Everytown for Gun Safety, has nearly 6 million supporters. 

In 2013, Moms Demand Action partnered with Mayors Against Illegal Guns to form Everytown for Gun Safety, a nationwide movement of millions of Americans working together to end our country’s gun violence crisis. Shannon and her army of mothers and others have bravely gone up against the gun lobby, showing up in their signature red shirts, blocking the hallways of congress with their strollers, electing gun sense candidates and running for office themselves, proving that if moms in this country come together, they can put an end to gun violence.

Taking a Collective Breath

Hello, Friends. We are here hoping that you and your families and friends are healthy and safe. We see you, and we are all in this together. We are sheltering in place, teaching second-grade math, doing Zoom calls, and budgets, and work plans, and all the meals and dishes (how are there so many dishes?!!), and we don't know what day it is either. 

What we do know is that whatever you are doing, you are doing the absolute best you can. And you can only do what you can do. We have no map for these circumstances, so whatever works is what works. That looks different for everyone, and different every day. 

We hope you are giving yourself grace and space in the midst of all this--which is especially challenging when things are upside down and personal space is very hard to find. We get it. We are right there with you. 

While we create this new normal as we go, we hope that we can add some connection, some community and some collective experiences.

As we wrap up another week of collective physical distancing, we continue to focus forward on health, sanity, flexible goals and new ways to make things work. This includes new ways to make memories, craft projects, connections, and money. And even make an epic margarita-or a mock margarita-to round out the week!

We remain in awe of how our community continues to create new ways to help others. We keep our healthcare workers and other front line folks serving others throughout this crisis close in heart and mind. From doctors and nurses traveling to relieve NYC hospital staff and mental health care providers helping us all stay well, to folks staffing food banks to keep families fed, we thank you, and we are grateful for you.

Stinchfield, RN, MS, CPNP, CIC, Vice President of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and Senior Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Children''s MN talked with Jill Krause about COVID-19 and Kids.
