Dear Friend,
Think about all the times you''d wished you had a "do-over". Now (deep breath) imagine just how wonderful you would feel if you got one!
That''s exactly what patients at The Marine Mammal Center get—a second chance.
Our Fish Kitchen freezer is usually full of hundreds of pounds of frozen herring stacked in boxes and sorted into buckets. But sometimes a shelf has to be cleared for the likes of scallops, clams, squid and shrimp.
Who are the picky patients with a sophisticated diet?

They’re sea otters!
Southern sea otters are listed as “threatened” under the federal Endangered Species Act with the population estimated at just a few thousand. That’s why, with support from people like you, we recently retrofitted part of our hospital to safely house injured or ill sea otters.
Otto is an adult male otter who was suffering from domoic acid toxicosis. Caused by a neurotoxin produced by harmful algal blooms, it can affect humans and other species too. In fact, this diagnosis is a common ailment for our California sea lion patients, but very little is known about how domoic acid affects otters, and with such a tiny population living in a small area, I think you’ll agree it’s important that we learn more.

There are so many ways you can get involved and make a difference for marine mammals and their ocean home. My friend, whether you live in California or Timbuktu, your actions can have a positive impact on marine life and ocean health.
You can learn all about marine mammals, take part in special programs, become a volunteer, shop our retail store, pledge through your workplace giving program, engage with us on social media or learn how to reduce your carbon footprint.
