Dataviz use case: matching existing hardware equipment with interactive maps.

Have you ever thought about interfacing your existing equipment with indoor maps?
Wilfrid Laurier University is equipped with NFC card scanners installed across campus. Due to the ongoing pandemic, all visitors, staff and students who are approved to return to campus need to scan their Laurier ID cards when accessing a building, as well as some indoor spaces. The university has seen an opportunity to use their campus maps to track which areas are most often accessed: a card scan activity heat map.

This new map view, which did not require any new hardware investment, enables Wilfrid Laurier to see the most active areas and the most popular places on campus. In particular, they can:
- Identify high-risk areas for COVID-19,
- Ensure compliance with new exit and entrance signage,
- Help improve emergency plans,
- Adapt areas that require more frequent cleaning services.

Why GPS does not work inside buildings?

Nowadays, getting from point A to point B is fairly simple: we open up our favorite mapping app on our phones, enter the address and then GPS takes over, telling us how to get there. COVID-19 challenges buildings
to manage transient floor plans

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced lots of buildings to redesign their layout to limit physical contact and reduce the spread of the virus. This was especially true for hospitals that had to prepare for the massive arrival of COVID-infected patients. In order to limit contaminations, hospitals reorganized their buildings into COVID and non-COVID zones. Entire units, floors, hallways and elevators have been dedicated to COVID patients.

The CNDG, a Belgian hospital, has restructured all of its buildings in just a few days and launched a new COVID-19 map at the same time: "With Mapwize, the hospital floor plans have been easily modified to highlight the new layout and routes set up for COVID-19. We were able to quickly make critical information available to our staff, patients and external partners, on multiple supports: directly on the Mapwize app, on screen displays and on paper." said David RENAUT, Infrastructure and Procurement Director. In the coming months, facing the COVID-19 challenges, other buildings have their role to play to safely welcome their regular public. Corporate offices, shopping malls, universities will need to adapt their buildings and implement strategies in relation to new gathering size restrictions.
