Black Lives Matter. Period. |
Since its founding, MAD has strived to engage in the social currents of the era, while working to amplify the voices and achievements of underrepresented artists. In that spirit, we offer these words from Ebony G. Patterson: "The looking requires thought, it requires engagement, it requires awareness, it requires inquiry, and it requires presence." We are greatly heartened by the global outcry against the depraved violence inflicted on George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless black bodies, and believe art is a critical resource for addressing the inequities that brought us to this grave inflection point in our nation's history. This week in the Online Learning Lab, we share the stories of artists whose voices are often muted, and encourage you to make art of your own in response to their work. We also challenge you to Look, Listen, Read, and determine how you will Make a change during these challenging times. |

Craft and Queerness |
MAD's Artist Studios offers personal and critical conversations with emerging artists and designers seeking new means of creative expression in the expanded field of craft. Speaking to craft's role in representing their queer life, Artist Studios alum LJ Roberts said, "I find my experience in the world requires flexibility, adaptability, resilience, and resourcefulness as essential for working and living. I use tools and techniques such as toy knitting machines, single-strand hand embroidery, a sock-making machine, quilting, and appliqu? particularly because they are portable, accessible, and can adapt to a variety of circumstances; which is also how I aim to move through life. There is a congruency and a mirroring there; craft and queerness enable each other beneficially." This week in our Online Learning Lab, access some queer crafting inspiration for your PRIDE celebration and draw strength from LGBTQ artists who have advanced craft as a tool for self-discovery and social change. |

Dear MAD Community, With the health and well-being of visitors, staff, volunteers, and our great city top of mind, we will be closing the Museum and The Store at MAD temporarily, beginning March 14. This proactive measure reflects our commitment to adhere to the recommended city, state, and federal guidelines for minimizing the impact of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). All programming at MAD will be canceled or postponed until further notice and anyone who has purchased admission or programming tickets will be contacted for refunds. Unfortunately, this also means we must postpone our opening of Brian Clarke: The Art of Light scheduled for March 21. During this time, the Museum will continue its enhanced cleaning procedures, postponement of all Museum-related travel, and remote working arrangements to support New York City's efforts to contain the virus. We will also update our website and social media channels as the situation continues to unfold. Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest news, as well as for online content to keep you connected to our collection, exhibitions, and educational programming. In gratitude for our Members' generous support during this challenging time, we are automatically extending all memberships by one month. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to welcoming you back to MAD.? |

Integrating Art and Architecture |
"As I rounded the little Ipswich streets that lead to the site of Norman Foster's new building, the impact I felt was like a huge wave of seawater bursting over me ... as with Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano's building in Paris I was aware that in some odd way here lay my future as well." -Brian Clarke Brian Clarke was just a few years out of art school when he first encountered Norman Foster's high-tech building; a revelatory moment that inspired a lifetime of work to reengage contemporary architecture with the traditional craft of stained glass. Now close friends, Foster and Clarke have collaborated on numerous building projects throughout the world over the course of their careers, and many of Foster's most acclaimed structures are enhanced with monumental stained-glass installations of brilliant color, cinematic excitement, and emotional intensity created by Clarke. To celebrate the exhibition Brian Clarke: The Art of Light, MAD invited Brian Clarke and Norman Foster to speak about their influential partnership with art critic and curator Robert Storr. The three art-world luminaries discussed groundbreaking building projects and how Clarke's immersion in the twenty-first-century technology of contemporary architecture spurred his own achievements as an innovator of the artistry and production of stained glass. In this month's Online Learning Lab, replay the fascinating conversation on the integration of art and architecture and contemplate how change and tradition can coexist in art as in life. |

Dear MAD Friend, In a year filled with uncertainty, one thing that has remained constant is your support. I am grateful to everyone in the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) community for their generosity and commitment to our mission. Together, we found new ways to gather and experience art, and because of your willingness to adapt, we succeeded in supporting more than 175 artists through our virtual programs. MAD is committed to connecting art enthusiasts directly with artists, offering opportunities every day for you to deepen your engagement with the most talented emerging and established craft artists and designers of our time. As 2020 concludes, I hope you will consider a year-end donation that will go directly towards expanding the number of artists we support and to building capacity for even more virtual programs that will keep emerging and established craft artists in focus. Artists are at the heart of MAD, and we couldn't be more grateful to them. Here is how you can help:
This Museum is a home for makers-amateurs, aspiring, and accomplished. Through the generosity of art lovers like you, MAD will remain a welcoming and inclusive center of art, craft, and design for all. Thank you for your support during 2020 and for considering the many ways you can help us secure the critical funds necessary to succeed next year. Sincerely, ![]() Michele Cohen |

Creative Transformation in a New Light |
At MAD, art and design share a common cause: to challenge the norms of conventional making and materials through bold experimentation. Our permanent collection represents the impact of this expansive thinking on myriad disciplines among which our holdings of jewelry particularly shine. Over 950 pieces to date illustrate the evolving interest of artists in the concept of jewelry as an art form and their achievements underline how anything can serve as inspiration-from a material or found object to the pressing social and political issues of our time. This week, take a cue from these groundbreaking artisans and explore fascinating stories of fabrication, invention, and more for your creative inspiration in our Online Learning Lab.? |

Dear MAD Community, |
The Board and Staff of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) are deeply saddened and angry by the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Abery-and the countless other deaths wrought by the systemic racism that has plagued this country for centuries. MAD stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as with the protesters across the country and within our own community that are standing up to denounce racism and police brutality. MAD is a work in progress. We can and will do better to address and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion within our own community. We are committed to redoubling our efforts to dismantle the oppressive systems that devalue the lives of black people, whose voices must be heard and heeded. We must hold our leaders, our public institutions, and ourselves accountable for making these concrete changes. We will continue to do the daily work of building a vibrant constituency of diverse artists, educators, students, visitors, board, staff, and community partners committed to an inclusive and liberated society. We will continue to work towards developing programming that welcomes diverse communities. MAD affirms that the museum is a classroom and laboratory for dialogue and learning, where expression can and must be challenging, expansive, uplifting, and inclusive. We understand that we all learn, find meaning, and make purposeful changes to the world around us by opening ourselves to the ideas and perspectives of others, and the arts are a powerful vehicle by which to do so. |

Working with Glass |
When MAD opened in 1956, glass was largely considered an industrial material, suitable for tableware, windows, packaging, and other consumer needs. Championing the artistry inherent in glassmakers' technical prowess, the Museum organized the first solo exhibition of Louis Comfort Tiffany that same year and many more exhibitions followed that gave intellectual shape to the world of glass. Offering reflection, transparency, brilliant color, light, fragility, and strength, glass connotes complex ideas and emotions for the artists who learn how to manipulate and give the molten material form. On close inspection, the captivating installations currently on view in the exhibition, Beth Lipman: Collective Elegy, reveal the artist's often imperfect engagement with glass. "I had to find my way in using this material. And when I use the material, I'm really drawing three dimensionally," Lipman explains, "So, the work is really capturing that moment in my own skill-whether it's success or failure-in time." In our Online Learning Lab, contemplate how the artist's creative explorations of glass speak to our own experiences of time passing-and the ephemeral nature of life. |

Dear Samuel, |
During these unprecedented times, the Museum of Arts and Design is grateful to our artist community for their positive energy and constant drive to create works that are inspirational and stimulating. We are also grateful to you, our loyal donors and ardent followers, for your commitment to the Museum. Although MAD is physically closed now, with your help our commitment to the artists of today will be uninterrupted. I ask that you stand with me on #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of philanthropy created in response to the pandemic, to support MAD''s efforts to connect artists with arts lovers, now and in the year ahead. For every dollar you give today through May 11, 2020, I will match that dollar, doubling the impact of your generosity. Ways you can help me make a difference include:
Your donation will allow MAD to continue sharing its free, virtual live studio visits with artists. It will provide funds needed to ensure the planned roll out of online art classes featuring our talented Artists-in-Residence. Gifts will also contribute to the creation of digital programs for our ArtsLife high school students and for a new way of teaching art to schoolchildren in the future. We are making strides each day towards a bright future, and I know we will succeed in our efforts to stand for artists if you stand with us. Thank you for considering my request. ![]() Chair Emerita |

Ready for new creative frontiers? We'll take you there! |
Since its opening in 1956, MAD has been a beacon for audiences in search of inspiration not found in conventional museums. Democratic, participatory, and irreverent in the best sense of the word, the Museum's maverick spirit flourished during the tenure of Paul J. Smith (1931-2020), who served as Director for over two decades. In our Online Learning Lab this week, we pay tribute to Smith, a beloved figure in the field of craft and a true visionary with an eye always toward the new even as he celebrated past practices. We hope his joy of discovery and pioneering path propel your creative exploration forward! |

Let the Light In |
The Museum of Arts and Design opened to the public in its home on Columbus Circle in September of 2008. With expanded space to showcase the Museum's permanent collection and innovative, hand-worked materials throughout to underscore MAD as a beacon of creative inspiration, the building radiated with its renewed purpose. Speaking of the building's standout new fa?ade, the architect Brad Cloepfil described the iridescent glazed terra-cotta tiles as "taking in light and giving it back to the city." Twelve years later almost to the day, MAD will reopen to the public on September 17 after a nearly six-month closure, once again bringing light to our beloved New York City. Installed on two floors, Brian Clarke: The Art of Light will be an animated display of exuberant, saturated stained glass and a powerful statement of human innovation, creativity, and resilience. Our gift of inspiration and wonder to you. With your well-being our top priority, MAD will offer timed entry and we have implemented new health and safety procedures for visitors and staff. Find out what to expect when you return to your favorite museum. Members, reserve your tickets now for our exclusive Members preview days September 14, 15, and 16! |

Drama and Color |
In just one week, MAD will welcome back visitors with the opening of Brian Clarke: The Art of Light, bringing the full power of the contemporary British artist's achievements to the United States for the first time. A master of stained glass, painter, and architectural artist, Brian Clarke explores the fullness of the human condition with dramatic works that glow with liquid color and are suffused with poetic expression. Having dispensed with the lead support that was once a necessary component of stained glass, Clarke has radically stretched the limits of what the medium can do and express. More than 20 of Clarke's impressively scaled, free-standing screens will be on view, as well as the artist's more somber works of sheet lead with stained glass, relief drawing, and sgraffito-style mark making. Transporting the visitor from reflections on mortality to feelings of joy and optimism, Brian Clarke: The Art of Light speaks eloquently to the present moment and offers a timeless theme of hope for all. Brian Clarke: The Art of Light opens September 17 and is on view through February 21. Reserve your timed-entry ticket online today! MAD Museum's updated hours are Thurs-Sun, 11 am-7 pm and new protocols are now in place to enjoy your visit safely. We look forward to seeing you! |

The Next Generation of Museum Leaders |
This summer, nearly 30 New York City teens from all five boroughs are participating in MAD's teen internship programs-now reimagined as a Work From Home opportunity to prepare for futures in a radically altered world. "Our teens are incredible thinkers and storytellers," says Julia Maranto, manager of teen and family programs. "All of our online sessions together are focused on equity within cultural institutions and transforming them from the inside, which is really empowering for young people as they are inheriting and shaping the future of museums.?I consider myself privileged to work with such inspiring young people who are making it their mission to address these issues and begin to make changes-not just for themselves-but for everyone who chooses to enter the museum field." As an outlet for honing their ideas and building their skill sets for shaping art''s history, the teens are producing a podcast series featuring interviews with artists of color. Share in their hope for the future while you listen to an illuminating conversation the interns recorded with the Museum's 2019 Artist Fellow Anthony Akinbola in this week's Online Learning Lab. |

Break the Rules |
Peter Voulkos was the most transformative figure in the history of modern ceramics. Breaking all the rules he had learned as a potter in the years following World War II, his wild experimentation pushed the functional pottery of plates, bowls, and the like into the realm of totemic sculpture. MAD was an early and passionate champion of Voulkos's artistic experimentation, and holds nearly a dozen of his iconic works in our permanent collection. Revisit the 2016 exhibition that charted Voulkos's astonishing creative risk-taking-and be inspired to make your own creative leaps forward in this week''s Online Learning Lab. |

Dear Samuel, Thank you so much for joining us at MAD Ball last night. We hope you enjoyed this new presentation of our annual event and we appreciate your patience with our technical difficulties. In case you missed it, MAD hosted simultaneous, intimate gatherings, while still addressing safety and social-distancing needs, at various locations around the country. All the participants connected through Zoom for a global celebration of artist Judy Chicago's lifetime achievements. MX Justin Vivian Bond was a wonderful host and there was an incredible special musical performance by Rosanne Cash. We were honored to celebrate our MAD Champions Simona and Jerry Chazen, Laura and Lewis Kruger, Barbara and Donald Tober, and our beloved Nanette L. Laitman, in memoriam. Their contributions to the Museum have been immeasurable. Thank you again to our sponsors The Feminist Institute and T. Edward Wines & Spirits. If you have not yet had the chance to make a donation to MAD, please consider doing so. Your donation helps fund our education programs and helps us support artists and their futures. You can make a donation here. Thank you for your vital support! The MAD Ball online auction is open until 5 pm this evening. There are fantastic works from Judy Chicago, Sanford Biggers, Katie Stout, ThankYouX, Lindsey Adelman, and so many more. Please be sure to place your final bids!

Reflections on Resiliency |
A 155-year-old tradition of black Americans celebrating freedom, family, and hope, Juneteenth now is embraced by a global community of all people who want equality. However, as our current moment demonstrates, there is still much more to do in America before we truly embody what it means to be a just and equitable union.

Women's Work |
Craft is a pathway to innovation. Yet, the significant achievements of women makers who applied so-called "domestic" skill sets in traditionally male spheres such as industrial design, technology, and even the politics of earning a living wage as an artist, are still largely untold. "It's like there was one vision of American art and then there were all the other people who lived in America," recalls Dindga McCannon, artist, artisan, and cofounder of the groundbreaking Weusi collective established in 1965 to support Black Arts, "That's why we had to grow our own audience. That's basically how I survived the first fifteen years of my life as an artist." Dive into the fascinating life stories of McCannon and other female innovators in this week's Online Learning Lab. |

Dear Friends, It's 2021-we MADe it! Because of your unwavering support, the Museum is ready to face this year with a renewed commitment to craft, our mission, and our role as a significant NYC cultural institution. Throughout 2020, we supported artists, designers, and students despite months without access to our building, and we couldn't have done it without you. Thank you for your generosity and willingness to try new ways of staying connected-the MAD community is unlike any other! We begin January with a full schedule of virtual programs, including another chance to hear from Brian Clarke, this time with the brilliant art photographer Ralph Gibson, on January 16 and MAD Moments on January 19 with fashion icon Andr? Leon Talley and the Ford Foundation's president Darren Walker. These programs are free to Members, so please consider joining if you haven't already, and don't forget about our new Virtual Membership option. Our galleries are overflowing with the stained-glass masterworks of Brian Clarke, the intricate handblown displays of Beth Lipman, and 45 Stories shares the finest jewelry treasures. In the spring, we will debut upwards of 75 works from our permanent collection in a richly interpreted show that will answer the question: how craft matters. Add to all of this Tabernacles for Trying Times, the acclaimed exhibition of painter Carrie Moyer and sculptor Sheila Pepe opening in April. You will need to visit often to experience it all! Book your timed tickets and be sure and visit The Store for post-holiday sales you don't want to miss! There is so much ahead for us to share in 2021; I couldn't be more excited for the new year to begin. From all of us at MAD, thank you and Happy New Year! Sincerely, ![]() Terry Skoda P.S. Our doors are open today! What better way to begin 2021 than with a visit to MAD! |

Shake off winter's chill and step into the light! |
Light is the primary animating force for the brilliant stained-glass screens currently on view in Brian Clarke: The Art of Light. Its expressivity a shared focus of investigation for Clarke and the artists and architects who are his closest friends. On Jan 16, learn more about this creative cross-pollination when the artist is joined by the celebrated art photographer Ralph Gibson for an in-depth discussion moderated by architecture critic Paul Goldberger. Now both giants in their respective fields, the friends'' long-standing dialogue on art, photography, and architecture continues to sustain their creative practices. Appearing live from their studios in New York and London, the artists will share what they have learned and how their close friendship has propelled their art forward.
