Let's say you have a $3,000 credit card limit, and your average balance on your credit card is $2,000. Even if you pay it off monthly, that's going to effectively show that your average outstanding utilization is around 66% of your credit limit. Credit bureaus don't like that.

The challenges LGBTQ+ face

Let's start off with some good news! Recent stats have shown that Canada is flattening the coronavirus curve. While we're not out of the storm yet, it's nice to see positive results coming from all of our sacrifices. For the past month and a half, this pandemic has taught us important lessons on our finances. Many of us have learned how deeply our financial health impacts our happiness during these uncertain times. A past U.S. study has shown that 9 out of 10 people agree that nothing makes them happier than feeling like their finances are in order. So when it comes to finding a true pathway to happiness, remember that splurging on short-term pleasures like owning the most trendy sneakers is nothing compared to mastering your money in the long run. Since many of us are focused on taking care of our finances right now, we recently shared the job loss action plan and the financial buffer plan to help you on your way to a better financial position. Using this knowledge, you'll need to take consistent action in order to create habits that will help you achieve your goals. Getting the results you want will take time, but just like how Canada is starting to control the COVID-19 spread with on-going measures, good financial habits will eventually help you take better control of your finances. To stay focused on controlling your spending, paying off debt and saving, you should set aside some time each day to review your spending and make any necessary changes. Schedule two minutes per day for these activities. Use effective reminders to make sure you keep doing these (try setting up daily reminders on your phone). It's a lot easier than you think and, once you've done it repeatedly, it will eventually become a habit. As you notice your progress, you will start feeling happier and even more motivated. Here're some of the latest COVID-19 financial relief updates in Canada.

Affected part-time, contract, and seasonal workers may now qualify for CERB. Apply through your CRA account.
In BC, renters can now get up to $500 a month of subsidy through the BC Temporary Rental Supplement Program. Apply now.
Low income Ontario Seniors under the Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) program will automatically see their payments topped up to maximums of $166 per month for individuals and $332 per month for couples, starting April 24 for six months.

Get physical

What other way is there to become happier without spending money? Studies have shown that exercise is not only good for us physically, but critical to our emotional well being. According to the author of Atomic Habits the "number of times you have performed a habit" is much more important than the "amount of time you have performed it." So just like adopting better money habits, make it easy, and build from there. If you can't safely exercise outdoors, there are still many ways to exercise at home. For B.C. residents, a new Emergency Benefit for Workers will provide a tax-free $1,000 payment to those who have lost income due to COVID-19. Albertans with similar situations can now apply for a one-time payment of $1,146 in emergency financial support from the provincial government as well.

Summer's coming! We know many of you are slightly (or very) excited that the provincial governments have announced plans to start opening back up. It's still important to remember that we need to remain vigilant, not just for our physical health but our financial health too. If there's one good thing to come out of this pandemic, it's the 60% decrease in credit card spending in Canada. More than half of all Canadians are carrying credit card debt, so keeping this lower spending habit going will help them pay it off sooner. Although convenient, credit cards make it really easy to overspend. An MIT study found that people were willing to spend up to 100% more using a credit card instead of cash. How's that possible? It's just how credit cards can trick your mind. When you pay with a credit card, you may feel fine in the moment because you haven't actually paid with your own money. Experts explain that this delay in payment leads to a detachment that makes a purchase feel less painful psychologically. The real heartbreak hits you when your credit card bill arrives. What's worse, once you get that bill it's too late to realize you've spent money you don't have and many people end up carrying a credit card balance... The #1 financial goal of Canadians 9 years in a row has been to get out of debt. If you're currently carrying credit card debt or any other high interest rate debt, make it a top priority to pay these off. The quicker you pay them off, the quicker you can start saving and investing towards your long term life goals. If you have multiple debts, consider following the Avalanche Method by focusing on paying off the debt with the highest interest rate first. Now that you know what credit cards can do, as you're paying down your balances, start moving away from using credit cards to speed up your progress to being debt-free. Try using your own money with a prepaid card or debit card for better control. By taking some time to create a budget, you could also help accelerate your progress. Remember, it's all about taking small steps towards healthier financial habits.

Here're some of the latest COVID-19 financial relief updates in Canada.

The Ontario government is extending emergency electricity rate relief until May 31, 2020. Customers will continue to be billed at the lowest price, known as the off-peak price.

It takes the average millionaire 28 years of investing before they hit that 1 million dollar mark. The lesson is clear: consistent, long term investing is the surest path to success. But, what most people don't realize is that even a small amount of money can get you there. Just $4 a day - that's right, what we would spend on a latte- could turn into over $4M if you invested long enough. This is based on the average annual return of the market as measured by the S&P 500 of 10%. If you doubled that to $8/day, you could get to double the returns.¹

Remember, if you have high cost debt like credit cards, pay these off first since the rate of interest is usually about 20%, which is double the average return of the S&P 500. Learn how to get out of debt here.

It''s the last hump day of May and we could all use a little inspiration right now. Take a moment to think about what it would be like to achieve your most important money goal.

Before James Dyson invented his now world famous Dual Cyclone vacuum cleaner, he spent 15 years creating 5,126 versions that failed. People who succeed never quit - they fall down and they get back up. The same applies to achieving your money goals Here's a story of a single mom, Kumiko, who had fought her way through the cycles of debt and got to what she once thought was an "unimaginable achievement". She went from struggling to make the minimum payments on credit cards to owning a profitable business. It certainly wasn't easy for her. Before becoming debt free, she had struggled with credit cards for years - she would pay it off only to rack it up quickly again. She went through a period of self-reflection to understand why she was spending more than she knew she could afford. She had to cut her spending in order to pay off her debt, so a budget was essential. She tried many budgeting methods and failed many times along the way. But by being persistent and having the courage to face her problem head on, she ultimately achieved her money goals. In 2017, her debt totalled over $77,000 but with a working budget, and using the Avalanche method, she managed to pay off this debt in only a year.

The take away from her story is that there isn't one perfect path for everyone to get in control of their finances, everyone is different. The keys are resilience and persistence. While you may hit a few humps and bumps along the way, don't give up. Continue making progress and you'll eventually reach your own money goals.

There's no sugar coating it, things have been rough. Many of us continue to find ourselves in a difficult financial situation. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when so many things may seem out of our control, so it's important to start focusing on what you have control of - such as your spending and be more aware of your money. If you're in debt and looking for a way out, you're not alone - getting out of debt has been the #1 goal for Canadians 9 years in a row. To help you get there, we've put together the key steps to getting debt free below. Remember it's about progress not perfection, so even if you can't do them all, starting on just one is already a step forward: ?? Stop using your credit card As credit cards make it too easy for you to overspend and accumulate debt, put your card on ice and consider it an emergency backup. If you already have credit card debt, make only the minimum payment on it and switch to using a prepaid card or your debit card. Doing this will help you budget because you can only spend the money you have (don't use overdraft if you have it). You'll also learn how much money you can afford to spend. ?? Know your debt Your goal is to be debt free, so list out all of your current debts. By knowing all about them (amount, interest rate, and payments), you can decide on how to best tackle them (using the Avalanche or Snowball method). Remember the reasons why you want to get out of debt and use it to motivate you to move forward. ? Create your money plan If you don't have a budget already, starting one is easier than you think. Try the simple to follow 50/30/20 plan to spend no more than 80% of your income. Want to push harder to speed up your progress? Try the 50/50 financial buffer plan. We recommend weekly budgeting for best control because the more you chunk something down to easier tasks, the more successful you'll be. Stop increasing your debt, then start putting more money towards paying off debt and you can adjust as you go. ?? Track your spending daily One of the secrets of creating a habit, is taking just 2 minutes a day to focus on it. Schedule this into your calendar so you won't forget. Every day review the reasons you want to get out of debt, review your spending from the day before, and make the appropriate adjustments for this new day. Don't worry if you get off track, simply learn from it and move on. We promise if you do this simple 2 minute daily exercise, 1 year from now you won't believe how far you've come.
It's all about making progress, not perfection. The more you pay attention to your money, the more mindful you will be around how you manage it, and the better your results.

With weeks of strict physical distancing measures, not only have Canadians been staying in and spending less, many online and digital technologies have been thriving. Use of digital entertainment services like Netflix and Spotify have gone up rapidly. You've probably also heard about online video communication services, such as Zoom, becoming wildly popular. But did you know that the most prominent digital currency in the world, bitcoin, is also experiencing some big changes? Its value has risen sharply over the last few weeks as it's approaching its 550 millionth transaction. What's even more interesting is that it's "halving" some time this month. What's "halving"? It means that the amount of new bitcoin (BTC) being generated and entering circulation every 10 minutes will drop by half. Some time in May, the bitcoin network will go from producing 12.5 BTC to 6.25 BTC every 10 minutes. Bitcoin halving is programmed to happen every time the network processes approximately 210,000 megabytes of transaction data, which takes about 4 years. This has already happened twice, back in 2012 and 2016. Behaving similarly to gold mining, bitcoin is finite and it also becomes harder to produce over time. Once all 21 million coins are generated, which is estimated to be in the year of 2140, the network will stop producing more.

While no one can predict where bitcoin is heading, it's certainly wild to witness how $5 worth of bitcoin back in March of 2010 is now worth almost $20 million today. Bitcoin is a speculative investment, but it remains the champion of digital currency. As many of us are forced to be at home in reality, many have been turning to the virtual world. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become one of the most popular video games with approximately 5 million digital copies sold since its launch in March. Players can explore and create their own virtual world and interact with other players. It also mimics similar economic concepts that we see in the real world, such as loans and stocks (in the form of turnips). Everything has changed as COVID-19 continues to impact our daily lives including our jobs and income. These rapid changes have not only made us appreciate the importance of our financial health over materialism, they also reveal how much less we spend when we don't buy things we don't need.

We know changes aren't easy, especially at the beginning. You might still remember some of your financial new year's resolutions that didn't work out, but no need to feel bad - studies have shown that humans naturally resist change, even when we know the changes will lead to beneficial results. Here're some of the latest COVID-19 financial relief updates in Canada.

For post-secondary students and recent graduates who are ineligible for CERB or EI and unable to work due to COVID-19, the government has proposed the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB). The CESB would provide $1,250 per month for eligible students from May through August 2020, and $1,750 for students with dependents and those with permanent disabilities. The CESB will be delivered by CRA and more details will be communicated.
A new program, Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA), will provide forgivable loans to qualifying commercial property owners to cover 50% of three monthly rent payments that are payable by eligible small business tenants who are experiencing financial hardship during April, May, and June.

Into the wild

During the pandemic, other than the trend that people are now spending much less, there's also a silver lining for many of Earth''s other inhabitants. In some cities that are currently locked down, wild animals have started taking over the empty streets (see video). Air pollution has also decreased due to less cars being on the road. Although it may only be temporary, it's some good news for the planet's health.
