Featured Partner Update
We were scheduled to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the FoodWorks Culinary Training Program at the Maryland Food Bank in Baltimore on October 15, 2020 with a regional fundraiser. Unfortunately, it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Thanks to the generous support the JPF continues to receive during this difficult time, the Foundation is delighted to present FoodWorks with a $25,000 gift in lieu of the proceeds from the proposed event. Please learn a little about the important work they do below.

Targeting low-to-moderate-income individuals, the 12-week program at FoodWorks offers a fresh start for those looking for careers in the hospitality and culinary industry.
Accredited by the Maryland Department of Education through a unique partnership with the Community College of Baltimore County, the program teaches basic cooking skills, serves nutritious meals to food-insecure Marylanders and prepares students for a life of self-sufficiency through job-readiness and life-skills education.
The program''s mix of practical culinary training and real world experiences makes FoodWorks graduates attractive candidates for employers at restaurants, hospitals, and institutional catering companies across Maryland. Approximately 85% of graduates are placed into jobs that pay above minimum wage within six months of graduation.
Like all culinary programs, there was some uncertainty surrounding FoodWorks at the start of the pandemic. However, under the leadership of Executive Chef Monique "Moe" Jordan and the collaboration of the entire FoodWorks team, the program continues to operate with mask-wearing and social distancing in the classroom and kitchen.

|
The FoodWorks program is now operating with smaller class sizes and hybrid instruction (3 days on-site and 2 days online).
Many students and graduates of the program have experienced hunger and food insecurity firsthand. FoodWorks not only prepares them for the workplace, it also allows their lives to come full circle. Through the preparation of nutritious meals, students who once depended on various forms of food assistance give back to communities that once gave to them.
"I used to go to one of the sites that the Maryland Food Bank provides meals for, and now I've come full circle because I'm providing the meals that I used to eat." - Jamal, FoodWorks Graduate
"We get to learn something new every day and the program gives you the real-world environment of being in the kitchen." - Tanesha, FoodWorks Graduate
"Food is history, food is culture, food is life." - Deanna, FoodWorks Graduate

Destination Chef
In mid-2019, the Foundation funded the first Annual JPF Catalyst Kitchens Membership Scholarship to The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Dorchester, MA. Chef Timothy Tucker, the Culinary Arts Manager at the Kroc Center is also the author of Destination Chef, a culinary textbook originally published in 2016.
The expanded second edition of Destination Chef is geared towards 10-week culinary training programs. The JPF curriculum development team, led by Foundation Executive Director Rollie Wesen, has worked to advise and support Chef Tucker on the new edition and we are excited to share news about the upcoming revision with our supportive JPF community.
