I didn't have any plans to revisit Lou Clark after the end of the Me Before You trilogy. But I, like many people, have struggled my way through this pandemic, and it gradually occurred to me that writing about how Lou and her family coped with Lockdown would be the perfect way to bring a bit of cheer to those of you who loved her, during a tricky few months for all of us. She made me laugh and smile (and even well up a little) while I worked on this story, and I hope very much that you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Thank you to everyone who has already bought a copy of The Giver of Stars. It was so important to me to tell the story of the real horseback librarians of Kentucky, women who risked their lives trekking alone under big open skies and through wild mountain forests to deliver books to the isolated and underprivileged. The endearing tale of female solidarity and resilience struck a chord with me and I just had to write about them.
If you''re yet to pick up a copy, the paperback is being released in Australia on 16th June, and in the UK on 23rd July - you can pre-order a copy here if you haven''t already. If you''re in the States, the hardcover and ebook are both available for purchase here.
I hope that you''re all holding up OK and that reading about Lou brings you a little bit of joy in these uncertain times. Stay safe.
I'm so pleased to let you know that The Giver of Stars is out now in paperback in the UK and Australia.
A couple of years ago, reading the whole of the internet, as I am prone to do before starting work, I came across an article in the Smithsonian magazine about the Horseback Librarians of Kentucky - a group of young women employed by the US Government's WPA scheme to go into the mountains after the Great Depression and take books and magazines to families who might not otherwise read a word.
I was enthralled by pictures of these real women, with their backpacks laden with books, who would travel up to 120 miles a week in the roughest terrain to bring knowledge and facts to families. These wonderful women pushed back against religious fundamentalists, as well as the patriarchy, who considered anything other than kitchen work or child-rearing unacceptable.
Given that their story is one about facts and knowledge, it felt incredibly modern and I quickly became obsessed. The Giver of Stars is the result and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.
Thank you to everyone who has already bought a copy, it means so much to me. If you''re yet to pick up a copy, you can order one following the links below.

And in case you missed it, last month my short story featuring our beloved Lou Clark was published. I wasn't planning to bring Lou back, but I thought she might bring a bit of cheer during these difficult days. She made me laugh and smile (and even well up a little) while I worked on this story, and I hope very much that you enjoy being reunited with her again.
