Hi Amelia,
Does your employer match donations? If so, it’s a simple way to double your donation to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. Some employers use Benevity and some match using other programs or paperwork.
You can typically use any gift in 2020 and if you haven’t yet donated, you have a few weeks left until the end of the year! www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/gives

Thank you to all who so generously gave on Giving Tuesday! We’re about 20% of the way to our goal for the week (and about 50% of the way to our total goal of $20K in 20 days).
Better Iowa bicycling only happens because of your support.

Hi Amelia,
The 2018 draft of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Iowa Bicycle and Pedestrian Long-Range Plan is one place the Coalition’s influence can be seen. The plan—10 years in the making—highlights the value of bicycling for a better Iowa. www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/dotplan
We continue to sit on DOT committees, attend meetings, and speak with the DOT on a regular basis. This work leads to better infrastructure like paved shoulders and better bicycling policy. We do this work so you don’t have to - we know your time is valuable and you would rather ride your bike than sit in a meeting!
Your donations help us to continue to do this important work to make Iowa bicycling better and improve our bicycle-friendly state ranking. Can you give a gift this year to help with this endeavor? www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/gives
We can only do this work because of your generosity.
Thank you for your support,

Dear Amelia,
Our hearts are broken seeing the devastation to our communities from the Derecho. We’re thankful to see all helpers, from utility companies working around the clock, to humanitarian organizations providing shelter, food, and other basic necessities, to neighbors helping neighbors. These are the things that make Iowa such a great place.
Coalition staff has been volunteering in Cedar Rapids and some days, it simply doesn’t feel like enough.
We’ve set up fundraisers for the hardest-hit areas, with all money going directly to the nonprofit (volunteer) trail group to support their efforts when the time comes for trail recovery.
We’re using our networks to tell Iowa’s story, to talk about the devastation, and to share how individuals and organizations can help, right now, and in the months to come.
We encourage you to visit this link for resources on volunteering and efforts happening right now: https://unitedwayofeastcentraliowa.galaxydigital.com/.And then, we encourage you to give to one of the trail organizations to assist with trail recovery. You can read more and give here: https://www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/derecho/.
We want to make any shopping or gift buying easy for you - shop our jersey sale online. Jerseys ordered are shipped directly to you (shipping is included in the price) in about a week. Check out sizes and styles here: https://iowabicycle.square.site/.

Hello Amelia,
Wow, 2020’s been quite the year, to say the least. Like you, we had to put things on hold, cancel events, and pivot our legislative, policy, and fundraising strategies.
But bicycling wasn’t canceled, in fact, more people were riding in 2020 than ever before! During this time we’ve been working to make Iowa bicycling better for all cyclists by:
Developing strategies and relationships to effectively work with state legislators for better bicycle policy, cyclists' rights, and safety.
Moving our Safe Routes to School and other educational content online to reach even more students and help them walk and bike safely in their communities.
Socializing from afar and virtually and are in the process of moving our largest educational event, the Iowa Bicycle Summit, online! This will let us reach even more planners, decision-makers, and advocates across the state.
Will you join us in this journey to make Iowa bicycling safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all? You can easily donate to support this work at www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/gives, and you can even do monthly donations for as little as $5.
Your support lets us continue this work and with a new legislative session taking shape very soon, we have lots of work ahead to ensure better Iowa bicycling.
Thank you,

Hi Amelia,
We know much has been canceled for summer, but bicycling is still going strong! We hope riding bikes is part of your summer plan - we know it’s part of ours. Our work at the Coalition continues, as I write this, our executive director is in Des Moines to work with elected officials on bicycling bills that are active.
This is important because it includes work like trail funding, which helps communities complete connections and develop more places to ride bicycles. We’re also moving some of our educational resources online so adults and youth can access them and learn skills like handle signals and traffic sign meanings. You can find these at on our Safe Routes to School page: http://iowasaferoutes.org/.
We’ve been hosting virtual activities for Iowa bicyclists and when permitted, will again host our other community events.
We’d love to have you be part of this work by joining our organization as a member or donor. Your support lets us continue to develop safe, enjoyable, accessible bicycling in Iowa. You can easily join at this link: www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/member, or sign up for monthly donations here: www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/autodonate (it’s as little as $5 a month).
The Iowa Bicycle Coalition began as a grassroots movement to ensure bicyclists were able to continue riding their bikes on Iowa’s roadways (you can read the whole story at the link: www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/bikeban). We still work to ensure these rights, by partnering with elected officials and municipalities, collaborating with advocates, and obtaining funding for better infrastructure, like paved shoulders, signage, and more.
Your donation to the Iowa Bicycle Coalition lets us continue to advocate for bicyclists' rights and to educate drivers to share the road.

Hi Amelia,
Tomorrow is the biggest nonprofit fundraising day of the year and we need your help to reach our goal for 2020! We are aiming to raise $20K in 20 days and we are halfway there! Will you help us raise the “downhill” half?
There are two ways to give: http://www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/gives http://charity.gofundme.com/giving-tuesdayiabikes
Your gift supports:
Work at the capitol to ensure bicycle-friendly policies and laws.
Teaching kids about bike safety.
Teaching new drivers to “share the road” with bicyclists.
Better funding for bicycle infrastructure and trails.
Education for planners and decision-makers about the value of bicycles.
A bicycle-friendly Iowa.
Building a community of bicyclists.
For the cost of a couple of beverages, a few coffees (and muffins), or a meal out, you can impact Iowa bicycling. And, any gifts of $35 or more include a membership!
Thank you for being part of our community of bicyclists and thank you for supporting Iowa bicycling.

Hi Amelia,
Maybe you have a similar situation. I frequently use a new bike lane on Clinton Street in Iowa City. Unfortunately, it has become a de facto double parking lane for Uber, DoorDash, and similar services. Enforcement has been lax. It seems futile to call a complaint to the police because the driver is gone before the police can get there. I can post my complaint on social media and despite the choir of people who also see the issue too, it never seems to get addressed. I know of one resourceful advocate who takes a photo every time the bike lane is blocked and sends it to the city council.
OurStreetshttps://www.ourstreets.com/
The OurStreets app is a new solution that could allow all of us to record this bike lane issue and many other bad driver behaviors. The collective data can be transmitted to still staff and elected officials. The app is extremely simple and you should download it to your phone just in case you ever need it. It is anonymous and you don’t need to create an account.
A car parked on the sidewalk?
Aggressive motorist?
Another issue making your travel by bicycle unsafe?
Stop riding, push the button, upload a photo if you can (but you don’t’ have to), confirm the time and location, and the information is put into the database. If you don’t have time, you can snap a photo and upload it later. And, if you don’t get a photo, you can just upload the information later.

Hi Amelia,
I can’t believe the longest day of the year has come and gone! Will you be spending your summer close to home? Will riding bikes be part of your activities? I’ve seen more and more people using the trails near me and am hearing from bike shops they’re selling many bikes. Bicycling in Iowa is booming, and the work we do at the Iowa Bicycle Coalition is more important than ever.
We focus on:
Safety and policy for bicyclists,
Funding for trails and trail connections,
Education of youth and adults about riding bikes safely.

It’s going to be a busy biking weekend! Are you prepared? Many bike shops are enjoying a couple of days off so their staff can recharge and spend time with family, so stop in soon to get any last-minute items. Parts of Iowa are experiencing trail closures due to flooding, and it’s looking like a hot couple of days are in the forecast. Be sure to check out local government and parks and recreation pages online for more information about trails near you.
Here are some quick tips and tricks to have the most fun celebrating by bicycle.
ABC Quick Check: Air, brakes, chain/cranks, quick release, and check over before you ride.
Safety: We recommend helmets, checking for loose clothing or shoestrings that could get caught, and having lights.
Security: Don’t forget your lock, learn more about locking your bike here: www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/biketheft.
Hydrate: bring lots of water and know where you can refill on your route.
Route Planning: Check your route, trail closures might impact where you ride.
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend!
Michelle

Hi Amelia,
Education is a key component of our mission and includes education for those who are decision-makers in the transportation and planning world and cyclists. To help us achieve this mission, we organize and host the Iowa Bicycle Summit which in 2021 will be a fully virtual event. You can read the origin story of the Summit here: www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/bicyclesummit
You’re going to want to attend this year! Being a virtual event has opened the door to even more great speakers from across Iowa and across the country. We’re creating some fun networking activities as well.
Are you ready to register for the 2021 Summit? You can do so here: https://iowabicyclesummit.com/register/
Your support allows us to continue this work and we look forward to seeing you online next month!
