Below is a sample of the emails you can expect to receive when signed up to inktober.
Hello!
We wanted to share with you our frequently asked questions.
You can read through them below, but they are also posted on the Inktober webpage here, in case you need to share these online with anyone.
As we get more Frequently Asked Questions we will be updating this page accordingly. Do you have a question about Inktober? Please reply to this email, or use our contact page, and put "For the FAQ" in your subject line.
Okay, and now: THE FAQ!
Q: What is Inktober?
A: Inktober is a month long art challenge created by artist Jake Parker that is focused on improving skill and developing positive drawing habits. Every day for the month of October anyone participating in the Inktober challenge creates an ink drawing and posts it online. Remember to use the hashtags #inktober and #inktober2018 if you want your art to be seen by everyone.
A: Inktober is every October. Post your first Inktober drawing on October 1st and your last on October 31st.
A: There is no official location or convention for Inktober. Wherever you live and create is where Inktober is.
A: Yes. Initially, the challenge of Inktober was focused on traditional inking. Although learning how to ink digitally is a skill separate from traditional inking it is no less valid. If you want to improve your digital inking skills then doing Inktober digitally is a great way to challenge yourself. Just be cool to those who want to use traditional inks. And traditional inkers, be cool to those who are trying to improve with their digital inking.
A: Yes. If calligraphy, typography, lettering, etc is how you create your art, then by all means do that every day for Inktober. We've even heard of writers taking on the Inktober challenge and crafting a poem or short story every day that follow the prompts.
A: Jake Parker says he really likes the Pentel Brush Pen. For a list of other good pens see the Tools page.
A: Yes. You can use markers as your inking tool or to color. You can also use watercolor. However, the Inktober challenge is about simplifying your options as an artist and seeing what you can create with a white sheet of paper and black ink. If you are going to use color try to limit yourself to just one color.
A: No. Whatever your creative process is, use it. If you want to sketch in a pencil and then ink on top that's fine! If you want to sketch in crayon and then scan it into the computer and do your finished inking digitally, go for it! As long as you are creating a new ink drawing every day, it counts.
A: No. The prompts are there to help spark your creativity. If you have another great idea, go for it!
A: Nope. You do not have to follow the order of the prompt list. If switching the order of the prompts helps tell the story you want to tell feel free to change the order.
But the cool thing about following the prompt list in order is seeing what everybody creates on the same day using the same prompt and how much variety and creativity there is inside of a single word.
A: You can draw whatever you’d like for your Inktober challenge. Just remember to follow copyright laws, and respect the original creator's wishes.
A: Right here. There is also additional Inktober merch on the Merch page.
A: September 1st of each year Inktober prompts are posted under the Rules and Prompts page and on the official Inktober Instagram . However, if you want the prompts a week early subscribe to the Inktober mailing list here.
That's it for now! Happy inking!
From Jake and the Inktober team
Hello!
Inktober is almost two months away and I'm already getting asked when the prompt list will drop. For the general public it will be September 1st, but for this email list I'll be sharing the prompts with you August 26. A full week earlier! That way you can get a head start on your sketches if you want, and spend all of October inking them.
I also wanted to let you know about the Artsnacks Inktober boxes. If you need a new set of inking supplies, you've got a hand picked box of the best stuff right here.
These actually don't go on sale until tomorrow, and every year they sell out, so I got permission from artsnacks to let you guys know about them today. You need a password to access the site before Tuesday, and that password is: INKME
Go here: https://www.artsnacks.co/inktober
Like I said, these are boxes of handpicked ink items. You also get an exclusive print that I drew, and an inking demo showing you how I use the inking tools I use. Unless you are all set up with the inking supplies you like, I wouldn't miss out on this.
Have a great day,
Jake
Ink drawing by Jake Wyatt
Why Do a 30 Day Challenge?
Why does this challenge have such an impact on people?
How does something as simple as doing an ink drawing each day work so well to boost people’s creativity?
Inktober works because the following three elements are baked into it:
Constraints
Accountability
Goals & Quotas
Mental Growth
Habits
Constraints:
When doing a challenge with a specific set of constraints you eliminate most of your options which allows you to focus on the creation of something. More options can lead to more opportunities to get frustrated and lose interest.
Inktober is about the constraint of medium. You must draw with ink. When you sit down to do the challenge you don’t have to decide what colors you’re going to use, whether you’ll be rendering in pencil or watercolor. The challenge has stripped away all of these variables that can get you sidetracked or frustrated, allowing your creative energy to be focused straight into your drawing.
Other constraints you can put on yourself are:
I sometimes find it ironic that creativity thrives under constraints. The old saying holds true: give an artist too much rope and they’ll hang themselves.
Accountability:
Once you start something with a specific end point (like 31 days) you have built-in motivation to get to that endpoint. You become accountable to yourself for that.
However, you also have built in empathy for all your excuses to drop out early, so you need to announce to friends, people on art forums, or your online followers that you are doing this challenge. Knowing that you told someone that you are going to do something gives you that extra push of motivation.
There’s also a flourishing community of Inktober artists who you can go to for mutual inspiration and support. Find a group of artists who are doing the challenge and join them, or form your own Inktober group. You’ll feel accountable to these people and have more desire to finish the challenge.
Macro Goals and Micro Quotas:
Big goals really work. Envisioning yourself obtaining the thing you want to accomplish gives the challenge more gravitational mass to suck you into it. But big goals can also be overwhelming and accomplishing them might sometimes feel impossible. Especially when our daily activities rarely produce dramatic results.
Doing a daily challenge introduces micro-quotas that help you balance your big aspirational goal with day-to-day to accomplishments. Instead of feeling overwhelmed because you have to make 31 drawings, you tell yourself that you just need to ONE drawing that day. This makes your big goal approachable, and ultimately achievable. It trains you to accomplish big things by breaking them down into manageable bites.
There’s power in these three elements of Inktober, and the benefits are twofold. One, you’re brain actually gets stronger, and two you form positive habits.
Mental growth:
Your brain loves the kind of stimulation a drawing challenge offers. Creative problem solving has proven to be one of the best catalysts of mental growth. Sitting down each day to solve the problem of a blank sheet of paper fires up your neurons and forces you into higher modes of thinking. It forces you to think outside of the box.
Every year, about 10 days into Inktober I think, "Oh boy, I'm out of ideas." It's usually around this time that I start doing really off the wall stuff that sparks a new flavor of creativity in me and sets me off in a new, more exciting direction. The first 10 days I repeat all my old tricks, but the last 21 days are exciting and invigorating because I'm covering new ground.
Habit imprinting:
The act of carving out 30-60 minutes every single day to physically do something starts you on the path to forming a habit. Some studies say it takes 30 days of doing something to turn it into a habit. Stopping for just one day sets you back and works against you.
Charles Duhigg’s book The Power of Habit introduced me to the concept of a “habit loop.” I’ll let him explain it:
First, there is a cue, a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode and which habit to use. Then there is the routine, which can be physical or mental or emotional. Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future. Over time, this loop… becomes more and more automatic. The cue and reward become intertwined until a powerful sense of anticipation and craving emerges.
When you create something your brain experiences several different “rewards”. There’s a sense of accomplishment. There are the positive reactions of others to the thing you created. Perhaps you feel a relief that it’s over and you can check it off your list. Maybe your brain just likes the extra activity going on up there.
Inktober forces you to create something every day. By doing that, your brain starts to crave its little daily reward. You give it a cue by reminding yourself it’s time to do the drawing, then you go through the routine of creating it. When you share it with others or admire what you created, your brain gets the reward it craved.
Constraints. Accountability. Goals. These three things combined have the power to bust you out of a creative slump. It’s power that can elevate your ability to new levels. Its power that can turn you into the prolific creator you want to be, with a habit of creating daily.
All of which could very well be life changing.
Thanks for reading!

I want Inktober updates! |
Hello!
Hi, I'm Jake Parker, the creator of Inktober.
The Inktober challenge doesn't start until October, but that doesn't mean you can't start prepping for it now. Here's a list of pens and other tools I reccomend: https://inktober.com/tools/
Also, if you want to brush up on your inking skills try out the How to Ink class from SVSlearn.com taught by myself.
Prompt List?
Every year I post a prompt list to help artist come up with ideas for what to draw. The 2019 list will be posted on September 1, 2019. I'll email it to you here, or just check our Instagram, twitter, and Facebook accounts.
What is Inktober?
If you don't know much about Inktober, it is a month long art challenge where artists create an ink drawing each day during October; creating thirty-one drawings in thirty-one days.
I started the challenge back in 2009 as a way to improve my own inking skills. Since then the challenge has grown into a massive event with people participating all over the world.
It’s a month of inky pages, dirty hands, and fired up imaginations.
It’s hard, refreshing, tedious, and relaxing all at once.
Whether you’re an Inktober veteran or a first-timer, this challenge will push you to level up your skill and force you to think outside the box.
Inktober is designed to help you form positive drawing habits and break out of creative slumps. It offers you fertile ground for ideas to sprout and techniques to grow. It’s a challenge that keeps you on the path to mastering your craft.
The last few years I’ve received countless emails, messages, and in-person comments from people telling me that Inktober got them drawing again. Participants tell me that for years they hadn't really drawn, or they hadn’t drawn anything for themselves, Inktober got them out of the slump, back into drawing, and more importantly, back to being creative again.
The artist who finishes Inktober is a better, wiser and happier artist than the one who started it.
Good luck, and have fun!
Thanks,
Jake
Hello!
Inktober starts in about 50 days so now is the time order any art supplies you're going to want to use for the challenge! I have a list of pens I recommend on the website. You can see that here: https://inktober.com/tools
There's also the Artsnacks Inktober boxes. If you need a new set of inking supplies, you've got a hand picked box of the best stuff right here.
There are a limited amount of these and they're about half gone now, so I wouldn't sleep on this if you're at all interested.
Go here to order: https://www.artsnacks.co/inktober
Like I said, these are boxes of handpicked ink items. You also get an exclusive print that I drew, and an inking demo showing you how I use the inking tools I use.
The prompt list will be released publicly on September 1. But since you're on the email list you'll be receiving it a week sooner.
Lastly, I want to share a quote from Beatrix Potter - One of the most influential women of her time. She loved nature and became a natural scientist and conservationist. She also loved writing and illustrating and created the Peter Rabbit books. Her inking style was delicate, with one foot set in realism and another foot set in fantasy. Here's what she had to say about drawing:
“The more spontaneous the pleasure - the more happy the result”
Let those words guide you as you prep yourself for Inktober 2019.
Have a great day,
Jake

Hello!
We keep getting emails about Inktober shirts and where to get them, so we wanted to let you know about the shirts we are making with Cotton Bureau! These are soft comfortable, good looking shirts. Each designed by Jake Parker, printed with loving care, and shipped to your door in a sturdy waterproof t-shirt bag.
One of the coolest things is wearing my Inktober shirt when I go to the store or to a movie and somebody points it out and says, "Hey! I did inktober!" I already know that person is my kind of person. A conversation starts and bam, new friend made.
We aren't saying that wearing your Inktober shirt is going to give you a ton of new friends...but we are not saying that it won't, either.
Anyway, if you want one, click below!
Thanks,
The Inktober Team
P.S. When you get your shirt, post a pic of you wearing it on insta, tag us and we will share it!

Hi,
Inktober starts next Tuesday! I hope you're excited and ready!
I've been getting a bunch of emails about the prompts and I want to clear a few things up for you:
1) The great thing about a prompt list is it's just a word to jog you mind for ideas.
I put words in the prompt list that have multiple meanings on purpose. I like seeing how different artists interpret the words differently.
The main thing is to be creative and have fun!
2) I've translated the prompt lists in to six languages
Español, Portuguese, Français, Deutsch, ??, ???
Working on more as I get time.
Some of the words didn't have a direct counterpart in the languages so my assistant got as close as he could. If you think we made a mistake, just use your own interpretation for that day.
3) You do not have to use the official prompt list to do Inktober
The prompt list is completely optional. You can do your own prompts if you want. You can do prompts that someone else made up too. However, most people are using the official prompt list. It's fun to see how other artists are inspired so differently by the same word.
4) There's no Inktober police
By the way, there's no Inktober police going around looking to shut people down if they aren't using ink or the prompt lists. This is just for fun. While it's suggested to use real ink, keep things black and white, and use the official prompt list, the spirit of the challenge is very open to people being creative in what tools they use, how they use them, and what they create.
I've heard of a community of artists who are going to use the prompt list to make a new 3D model every day. There's also writers who are taking part in Inktober by writing a short story for each prompt.
Who's going to stop them and tell them they're doing inktober wrong? No one.
This month if you are tempted to call someone out for not doing Inktober the way you think they should be doing it I want you to just keep it to yourself. Only celebrate people's creativity and expression. Lets keep it positive out there on the web. Do like your mom taught you: "If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say nothin' at all."
Alright, that's all I needed to say for this email.
Thank you everyone for signing up for this email list. We are now 50,000 strong!
If you appreciate these emails, could you tell just one friend to subscribe as well?
Also, if you buy a t-shirt, or something from the merch page, or from the tools page I get a little kickback, and that helps out a ton to keep the lights on here.
Lastly, a big thank you to our partners this year.
Thanks,
Jake
Hello,
Happy Inktober! I hope your Inktober is off to a great start. I wanted to share with you this write up that Christine Nishiyama from might-could.com sent to her email list recently. It was so good I asked if I could share it with you. She was really cool about it and said yes. Christine has a great email newsletter you should check out. Also, follow her cartoons on Instagram: LINK
Here's her advice having a fun and successful Inktober this year:
Have y'all heard of Inktober? It’s a drawing challenge originally started by illustrator, Jake Parker in 2009. Every October, artists around the world aim to create an ink drawing daily for 31 days, sharing their work online with the #Inktober hashtag.
Over the years, it's morphed into a huge art event with over 12 million drawings created by thousands of artists from around the world. There are official Inktober themes each year, but many artists choose to pick their own themes as well.
The rules are simple:
Sounds pretty easy, right? How hard can it be to carve out a few minutes to draw a lil’ something each day?
Welp, it turns out it’s very hard. I remember not too long ago when I struggled so much with drawing consistently. I desperately wanted to be drawing every day. I knew I should be, and I told myself I would, over and over. But somehow, the hours and then the days would slip by and I wouldn’t draw a single line.
I’d get busy with all the other things I had to do. I’d get overwhelmed not knowing what to draw. I’d be afraid I would draw something terrible and end up feeling worse. But a lot of times, I’d just choose not to draw because it was easier. I’ll do it tomorrow…
Inktober was the kick in the butt I needed. I forget now exactly which year it was, but the first year I participated in Inktober marked a major shift in my drawing output. I saw a tweet about it and thought, “Yes! This is what I need! This will give me the motivation and accountability to actually draw every day!”
And surprisingly, it did. Did I draw every single day that first Inktober? No. I missed multiple days. It wasn’t perfect. But having the ongoing motivation, and knowing that I was supposed to be sharing my work each day, made me jump back on the drawing wagon way quicker than I had before. All in all, it was more than I had ever drawn in a month. But more importantly, it was the most consistent I had ever drawn.
A funny thing happened while I was going through that first monthly challenge. I started to want to draw each day. Once I had gotten over the hump of the first week, and had sat down to my sketchbook multiple days in a row, something clicked in my brain that made me start to crave drawing.
I no longer had to work as hard to convince myself to draw. I just wanted to. I was developing a drawing habit.
If you haven’t experienced this sense of drawing nirvana, don’t worry. It’s never too late to develop a drawing habit. And don’t be intimidated and think your drawing habit has to be perfect. Trust me, mine wasn't in the beginning and it's not now either. There are still days, occasionally, when I don’t draw.
But the difference is how long these lapses last. It used to go on for days and days, even weeks. Now it’s just one day, and it happens much less frequently. And I don’t beat myself up about it, I just get back to drawing.
What I've learned is that consistency is the most important aspect of improving your drawing skills.
You don’t want to burn out creating huge pieces of detailed artwork every single day. But drawing something, no matter how small or how simple, will do wonders for your attitude toward drawing, confidence while drawing, and development of your style and voice.
Drawing consistently is hard, for sure. It requires commitment and willpower, and sometimes drawing when you don't really want to. But the more you draw, the more it builds on itself. The drawings compound, and you’ll notice with each line and each day that it becomes easier and more enjoyable to draw.
So how 'bout it? If you’re interested in drawing with us in Inktober this year, here are some tips to get started and stay on course for the whole month!
You can choose to follow the official Inktober theme list, pick one from another artist on social media, or use our #MightCouldDrawToday month-long theme with #MCDTInktober2019! I'll be announcing that theme on September 30.
You can also pick and choose from different themes based on what inspires you that day, or create your own theme!
Remember our whole consistency, not perfection goal? That totally applies to Inktober too. YOU get to choose what goal works best for you. Is your goal to draw every day in October? Every other day? Once a week? Setting your intention ahead of time will help you manage expectations and be more likely to follow through.
"You can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better." –Jake Parker
Using the challenge hashtags or other artists' hashtags is a great way to share your work with a larger community and get involved. But creating and using your own unique hashtag will allow you to collect and see all your drawings from the month together in one place.
A common way of doing this is to add your name to the Inktober hashtag like one of these:
#FirstNameLastNameInktober2019
#InstagramHandleInktober2019
Let's say it happens—you missed a day of drawing. So what? That was yesterday, and today is today. We can’t let one slip up bring this whole thing crashing down.
It’s ok. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. Consistency is what we’re really aiming for, and we can keep it up by forgetting the tiny missteps and focusing on the big picture.
Maybe you forgot to draw yesterday. You can’t go back, and you can’t change that. But today is a new day with the opportunity to rebound. You can still draw today!
You can totally rock Inktober this year. It’s challenging, I know. That's the point of a drawing challenge! But armed with a theme, a frequency goal, hashtags, and self-compassion, you can draw more than you've drawn before!
I'll be here, drawin', messin' up, and kickin' booty right along with you.
It's Inktober time, baby... so let's draw!
Thanks for this, Christine!
I hope you have a great day.
Best,
Jake

Hi,
I hope you're having a good time with Inktober. We are just a little over halfway done for the month! Can you believe it??
If you've been able to do 18 drawings so far, I want to congratulate you! So far 3.5 Million Inktober drawings have been posted to Instagram* this year.
According to one popular study it takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days for people to form a new habit. If you are finding it easier to do your Inktober drawing when you sit down, then perhaps a daily drawing habit is starting to take hold on you now. That’s great!
If not, don’t worry. Keep going!
As author John Irving once said “Good habits are worth being fanatical about.”
I hope Inktober is helping you create more and get better at drawing.
If you haven't been able to do 18 drawings so far, don't worry! Forget about the last 18 days and set a goal for yourself to start back up this weekend and finish out the month.

Hello,
I hope you had a great week.

I've heard from so many people that said this year has been the most challenging/most fun/most creative year for them. And I hope it's been that way for you too.
I've been really busy, not just with my own Inktober drawings, but also finding great artists to spotlight on the Inktober instagram account: LINK

Hi,
Jake here, I just wanted to thank everyone who participated this year. What a polite, creative, and hard working group of people the Inktober community is! I've come away from this month so inspired.
Three things:
1) Inktober in the NEWS!
- NPR shared an article about inktober highlighting several artists: LINK
- The BBC interviewed me and shared a bunch more artists: LINK
2) Moving forward
The challenge is over, but that doens't mean you have to stop drawing. Hopefully, you've started a daily/weekly drawing habit that you'd like to keep up. For the next 11 months me and my Inktober helpers will be here to help motivate you to keep drawing.
We'll be sending emails every week or so through out the year with:
- artist spotlights
- inking and drawing tips
- art/inking supplies we like
- motivational and inspirational thoughts
- information on demos, books, and downloads to help you draw better
- and of course if there's any new Inktober merch available, you'll be the first to know.
If there's anything you do or don't want to see, let me know! I never want to waste your time with these emails.
3) How did Inktober go for you?
Let me know what the highlight of Inktober was for you!
Or something you learned about your art, your skills, or yourself from doing Inktober!
A reply to this email goes to an inbox I read. And I do my best to get through them all. Unfortunately, I don't have time to reply to everyone. Please don't take it personally. I do appreciate you!
Thanks! And have a nice easy November. Maybe try Slowvember?

Who’s up for something new this year??
?
In order to keep yourself in good inking shape we are going to start announcing weekly drawing prompts!
We will be posting them on Instagram and here in your inbox.
?
Every week we will post a new prompt. You have a week to draw it and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #inktober52.?
?
We will then spotlight our favorite drawings on Instagram, and in a weekly email.
?
No pressure here, this is just a way to keep you motivated to draw throughout the year. Hopefully by the end of the year you’ll have 52 more drawings in your portfolio!? ?
Who wants in?!? Get a friend to do this with you.
?
The first prompt is “flight.” ?
How can you think creatively with this one? Have you ever dreamed you could fly? What did it feel like? How can you draw that feeling? Maybe come up with a way to make something airborne that shouldn’t fly. Just some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.?
?
Okay, have fun!? Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Hello!
Ready for this week's prompt?
Prompt No.6 is “hammer.” ??
Hammer is both a noun and a verb. You can hammer something and you can hold a hammer so let that help you think creatively about this prompt.
Some ideas to get your creative juices flowing: What if a hammer had feelings? Hammers are heavy, draw a character who you wouldn't expect to use a hammer hefting one. Draw some Thor fan art or design a new hammer for Thor!
Good luck and have fun!

P.S. I just uploaded a new youtube video that I think you might like. LINK
Ready for this week's prompt?
Prompt No.5 is “balloon.” ??
Balloon is both a noun and a verb. Something is a balloon, and something can also balloon up. How can you draw something unique and creative that portrays balloons in an unexpected way? Could a balloon be lifting something it shouldn't? Could it be made out of materials you wouldn't normally associate with balloons? There's also hot air balloons that offer a wide range of drawing possibilities. You could also draw a character ballooning in size for some reason.
Good luck and have fun!

You guys are incredible. We can’t believe how many people did an #inktober52 drawing for “flight.” Some truly creative drawings out there.?
Glad you’re having fun!? Can’t wait to see what you come up with this week.?
Prompt No.2 is “shadow.” ??
?There are a lot of ways to do something creative with this prompt. If you don't normally add a lot of shadow to your drawings, this might be a good chance to practice that. What could be lurking in the shadows? What could a shadow be casting itself over? What might have the nickname "shadow?" Hopefully these questions spark some creativity in your drawing!

My life got a little overwhelming last week and I didn't send out the prompt email. If you were wondering if you missed it, no, I just didn't have my act together. Sorry about that. Working on implementing a couple things to make sure I don't miss it again!

Hello!
Ready for this week's prompt?
Prompt No.7 is “dinner.” ??
You can have a lot of fun with this one. Draw something hunting for its dinner. Or draw something that is for dinner, but doesn't want to be. You could draw your favorite meal. Or draw a meal you wish you didn't have to eat when your were a kid. Be creative, and have fun!

P.S. Did you know I do a podcast about Illustration? You can listen to our latest episode here: LINK
Hello!
I wanted to start you off with some motivation this morning by Jeff Goins:
I like that idea. Often times we think we are just faking it, pretending to be who we are not until we eventually become that thing. We are probably doing ourselves a disservice if we let our thoughts go that route. Sometimes, a simple change of the way we think about ourselves can have a huge effect on our output. Something to think about today!
How's your Inktober52 going? Ready for this week's prompt?
Prompt No.8 is “spider.” ??
I thought this could be a fun and interesting prompt. I would love to see you version of a spider. Is it cute and fluffy, or spindly and dangerous? How about drawing a spider shaped vehicle? What would a spider drive? What would a superhero who was bit by a radioactive spider look like? hope these thoughts and questions inspire some ideas! Have fun!

I've fallen behind on my Inktober52 drawings, but I'm not letting that get me down. I've got a catch up day planned and I'll be able to finish inking and posting them soon. It's only two drawings. That's what's kind of nice about doing this slower paced challenge. It's not too overwhelming.
Thanks,
Jake
P.S. Have you heard 3 Point Perspective? It's a podcast I do about Illustration with a couple friends of mine. Our latest episode is all about how to get good art foundation skills: LINK
Another Inktober has come and gone. It was an incredible year with almost 4 million drawings posted on Instagram alone! We needed to catch our breath after the whirlwind, but wanted to say we are so impressed with all the drawings and art made this year. ?

Hello!
What a great month of color April was! The colorful posts you all have been doing have been fun, amazing, and inspiring. ?Thanks to Spectrum Noir for sponsoring the Inktober account this month!Moving into May we will go back to do more traditional prompt words. You can still add color if you want though! This week''s prompt is "TRAIN"
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.18 is "train." ??
This is another prompt word with multiple definitions. Let that inspire whatever direction you want to go with this drawing. You could draw Thomas the Train fanart, or draw a boxer training for their next fight. You could draw a train of elephants marching through the plains. Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it!

Hi,
October is just a little over 2 months away, which means inktober season is getting close. I''ll be posting the 13 prompts for Inktober at the end of August to you here in these emails. The general public doesn''t get to see them until September 1.
Now''s a great time to stock up on supplies if you''re running low. I''ve got a list of my favorite tools here: LINK
If you really want to finish Inktober this year, my advice would be to schedule time in September to do some sketching for the prompts, and then ink them all in October.
Lastly, I''ve got a BIG announcement coming soon in regards to Inktober this year. But I can''t talk about it just yet. really excited. Stay tuned!
Thanks,
Jake
This week''s prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.30 is "SANDY" ??
We are excited how you tackle this prompt. What are some places that are sandy? What are some things that get sandy? Place a character in one of these environments or put them in a sandy situation....Or just do some fan art of Sandy the Squirrel from Spongebob. It''s all good.

Have fun!

This week''s Inktober 52 prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the weekly Inktober52 prompts from the year in case you want to do some more:
No.49 is "BOOK" ??
Though ubiquitous, books are special. They''re portals. Time traveling machines. Mind-link devices. Because they''re not connected to wi-fi, there''s no notifications, data tracking, or algorithms at work stealing and leveraging your attention. It''s just you and the author, having a moment together. Spending any amount of time in a book is like crawling into the head of another person. It''s the closest thing to mind melding us humans have been able to achieve. Reading a book allows a conduit of thoughts to stream into your head, which enables you and the author to become of one mind, sharing consciousness in a kind of gestalt. They''re powerful, man.
With that, what the prompt of "book" inspire you to draw this week?

And here''s the last 9prompts in case you missed them:
Prompt No.11 is "tower." ??
I thought tower would be a fun prompt. You could draw something that towers over smaller things. A giant? A massive tree? A building? Then there''s actual towers you could design. There''s old crumbly ancient towers, or futuristic carbon fiber space towers. You could draw your character exploring a tower. Or draw a beast inhabiting a tower. There''s a lot of things to inspire a drawing! Can''t wait to see what you come up with.

Hi!
I''m so excited for Inktober this year. If you''re like me, drawing is an escape and a chance to reconnect to my inner creative spark. This year has been nuts. It''s been hard to feel creative and put new things into the world. Which is why I think we need something like Inktober to motivate and inspire us artists to do what we were made to do: Create.
I hope you''ll join me this year in setting aside a little time every day to make something.
When I started Inktober I had a few goals in mind, and these have not changed in the 10+ years I''ve been running this challenge. The Inktober goals are:
Before we get to the prompt list, I''d like to thank all the Inktober 2020 Partners who are closely aligned with our goals and are doing things to benefit the Inktober community. Here they are in alphabetical order:
Art Lounge - Arteza - ArtSnacks - Blick - Crafters Companion - Chronicle Books - Deviant Art - Kuretake - KingArt - Michaels - Pentel - Sakura - Sktchy - SVSlearn - Viviva - Zebra
When you get a minute go check them each out.
ok...are you ready?
Please don''t share until September 1.
Now that you''ve got the list, use the month of September to sketch out and explore ideas!
I''ll be sharing all my Inktober sketches on my Patreon so if you want to see what I''m planning on doing for the challenge you can check it out there: LINK
Also, if you are wanting to brush up on your inking skills, I just published a NEW tutorial to get you warmed up for Inktober: LINK
I''ve got a special discount for email subscribers. Use code "ilikeink" for 50% off the purchase price.
Well, this is it! I''m looking forward to seeing all the incredible art, and finding new artists this year!

Jake
Hello!
It has been so refreshing to see all the green in people''s drawings this past week! Thanks again to Spectrum Noir inspired us to add a little color to the challenge this month. They love what is going on with #inktober52 and reached out to sponsor Inktober52 during April.
For the rest of the month we will be throwing different colors into the mix with each prompt. This week: RED.
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
Prompt No.15 is "red." ??Here''s my drawing. When I thought of the color red, an image of a fox popped into my head. I wanted to stick with the theme of robots and nature so I thought about a dilapidated old war machine that has become a haven for birds and other woodland creatures. A curious fox inspects the pile of scrap.
For this drawing I used the Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers and the Tri-Blend Markers. I love the richness and blendability of these markers. I''ve been using copics a lot in the past and these markers are a perfect substitute if you''re on a budget.
The tri-blend are actually a much needed product. In a single marker, you have 3 different values of a single color so you can easily work from light to dark. You can get a set here: LINK

We love the amazing Inktober community and we want to know what we can do to better support each one of you. As part of that effort, we are looking for individuals that would like to share their opinions through a private online discussion. No.28 is "Wires." ??
There are a lot of possibilities with this prompt. There are many kinds of wires that do many kinds of things:
They connect devices together
They hold things up
They channel power to a city
They are used to transmit messages
They are in house walls or your electronics
What do wires symbolize? What doesn''t normally have wires that you could add wires to?
Good luck with this one, and have fun!

Hello!
Can you believe we''ve been doing Inktober52 for 10 weeks now? It''s been a lot of fun seeing what everyone has been doing, and following the #inktober52 hashtag.
Here''s this week''s prompt:
And here''s the last 9prompts in case you missed them:
Prompt No.10 is "elf." ??
There''s a lot you can do with elf. Elves have been depicted in so many different ways over the years that you have a wealth of inspiration to draw from. You could draw a warrior elf like the kind we''ve seen in the Lord of the Rings movies. Or a small happy elf, like the kind depicted in so many stories about Santa and his workshop. There''s elves in Harry Potter, Hellboy, and the Warcraft games, and that''s scratching the surface of popular fiction. The inspiration of all of these comes from actual folklore, which has an even broader view of what an elf could be. There''s so much you could pull from here for ideas. Excited to see what elf YOU draw!

there''s a lot if imagery the word drill conjures up. You could draw the biggest, baddest power drill a person could ever need. Or how about one of those old timer hand cranked drills? You could draw a dentist drilling a tooth. What wonders would you find drilling down into the earth? What are some ways you can turn this into something really creative?

Hi,
Jake here. After YEARS of working on this it's finally ready. INKTOBER ALL YEAR LONG is your indispensable guide to doing the Inktober challenge, mastering drawing, and being more creative.?
?
This isn't a sketchbook and it isn't just a collection of drawings. It's like my YouTube videos, my instructional videos, and my blog all rolled into one, but as a book.?
?
It has its own 31 day prompt list, that you can do any time of the year. There''s a collection or drawing exercises to help you improve your art, and a good chunk of the book is devoted to my drawing process. And it's filled to the brim with my illustrations. Really proud of this one.?
?
Pre-orders are open now. Book arrives September 15th. Published by Chronicle Books.
This week''s prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.24 is "Puppet." ??
This one is going to be so fun. Some ideas:
- Design a sock puppet.
- Draw your version of Pinocchio
- Draw Muppet fan art
- I''m sure there''s some political satire you could do here as well
Whatever you do, have fun with it and use this prompt to push your abilities as a drawer.

6 months ago, we received an email from Aditya, the creator of Viviva Colors. They are a small but upcoming art brand based in India that makes revolutionary watercolor in the form of sheets! We were impressed by his idea and we got working on a collab that we would make this #AnInktoberToRemember.
We''re launching on 3rd September, 10am Pacific Time (5pm GMT) on Indiegogo.

And here''s the last 11 prompts in case you missed them:
Prompt No.12 is "elephant." ??
Elephants are cool. I thought it would be fun to see a a bunch of artists draw elephants. I don''t have any direction other than, don''t over think this one. Just draw your best elephant! And wash your hands, and stay away from people.

Woah, livin'' on a prayer!
Halfway through the year, and halfway through INKTOBER52!
I kind of fell off the wagon and have only done about 14 so far, but I''m picking it back up again and did LUNAR this week. You can see my drawing for it below.
If you haven''t tried it yet, or have fallen off, nows the perfect time to pick it up and try to finish out the year strong.
Note: When Inktober comes in October the two challenges will come together and the Inktober 52 prompts on Thursdays will also be the prompts for the Thursdays of the 31 day challenge.
Have you heard of ArtSnacks? Every year I work with ArtSnacks on putting together a curated box of art supplies and unique items. There''s things in it like my favorite pens and inks, but also items like exclusive sketchbooks with a cover I illustrated. One year we made this cool Inktober pen bag that I now use to carry my drawing tools. I love that bag. They''re sold out now otherwise I would link it to you.
Well, ArtSnacks just emailed me to inform me that our new box is available for pre-order. If you want to get one and make sure you''re order is locked in before they''re sold out here''s what you do:
Use the password ILOVEINK (all caps) to pre-order now and receive your collection in September. LINK
This week''s prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.26 is "Half." ??
Since we are halfway through, an Inktoberer emailed me to suggest Half be the prompt for today. Good idea!
I''m a big fan of cross-section drawings, might be fun, but hard, to do a cross-section drawing of something you don''t normally see inside of.
You could draw something cut in half, or two halves coming together. When I asked my son about this prompt he said that all he could think of was half a hot dog. So...there''s that, haha.
Can''t wait to see what you come up with!

Hello!
Ready for some good vibes? This week I thought we should focus on what good things we have in our lives.
So the prompt this week is to draw what ever gives you joy:
And here''s the last 12 prompts in case you missed them:
Prompt No.13 is "joy." ??
Think about what makes you happy. It could be as simple as a bowl of cereal, or as complex as your dog, who still chews up your flip-flops but you love him anyway. Think of a happy event, or something you love doing and let that inspire this week''s drawing. Let''s spread a little positivity and good vibes around the internet this week!

It was really fun to see everyone''s incredible garden drawings. Scroll down to check out some of our favorites. This week we turn our heads up to sky for some inspiration. I don''t know if people are going to like this one or not, but I''m excited to see the drawings it inspires.
-Jake
This week''s prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.31 is "UFO" ??
From flying saucers to anti-gravity tic-tacs there''s no end to what people have seen in the sky. Unidentified flying objects or don''t have to be alien, or even space craft, they''re just something in the sky that can''t be explained. This is a chance to let your creativity shine and come up with a drawing that explains UFOs or come up with a design for what you think a UFO actually might look like. Can''t wait to see what you do!

First, you don''t need me to tell you how insane this year is...and it''s not even over yet. That said, I''m looking forward to inktober more than ever. It''s the one time of year I can sit down and create something impactful, just for myself. Not for a client, not as a commission, not as an assignment, but something for me.
Drawing is my therapy, and I hope you''ll find Inktober therapeutic this year as well.
With that, I''m excited for one of our partnerships. We are teaming up with Viviva to make something special to help you in your art quest. The art products we are releasing with Viviva have been designed with exactly this in mind: to bring you the joy of art and color in a difficult time.

Hi,
3 DAYS LEFT!
I hope you''ve been having a good Inktober. I know it''s not easy to do a drawing every day for the month, but it is worth it. Even if you missed a few days along the way, the last 3 prompts are waiting for you to try them out. Here''s some ideas for how to do these last three prompts:
- Shoes: Draw a character that doesn''t normally wear shoes, or draw your favorite pair of kicks.
- Ominous: This is an adjective, which means it is used to describe something. A thing that is ominous gives the impression that something bad or unpleasant is going to happen. So you could do a little story telling with this one. Draw a character so focused on their phone, they don''t see they''re about to walk into an open manhole. Or draw a mouse that doesn''t notice it''s being followed by a cat.
- Crawl: I thought I''d end Inktober on a verb. Draw something that crawls. Could be a baby, a caterpillar or other bug, a tank, or draw something that makes your skin crawl! This will be the prompt for HalloweeeEEeen!
I hope that helps. I''m so excited to see what everyone draws!
Today at 10am Pacific time, I''m doing another live drawing on IG with my pens from Sakura. Log on to IG between 10 and 11 to watch.

Hello!
So fun to see all your bubble and mantis drawings this past week. Ready for this week''s prompt?
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.21 is "robot." ??
This week''s prompt invites you to explore your mechanical side by drawing a robot. In real life, there''s all kinds of different robots: robots that vacuum floors and robots that mow lawns. Robots that build cars, and tiny robots that build microchips. It would be cool to see you come up with a robot that solves a specific problem you encounter. For example, I wish I had a robot that could load the dishwasher. To liven up your drawing, try drawing your robot malfunctioning.
Other ideas:
Draw fanart of your favorite robot.
Draw your favorite Disney or Marvel character as a robot
Draw an animal as a robot.
Lots of possibilities here.
Have fun with it, and see you next week!

My New Inktober Book is up for Pre-Order now! LINK
Hello!
So many great color drawings are showing up in our feed! The Inktober community has been so creative with these prompts. Inspiring!
Spectrum Noir is a big fan of Inktober and wanted to inspire us to add a little color to the challenge this month. I am a fan of their markers too, so when they reached out to sponsor #inktober52 during April I was really excited.
Our final color prompt this month is: YELLOW
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.17 is "yellow." ??
Some of the most vibrant yellows in nature show up underwater. I thought for this drawing I would take my broken down robot motif into the ocean and have a coral reef springing up around it. I also added some sort of dino-whale, because why not?
All month I''ve been using the Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers and the Tri-Blend Markers. These marker have won me over. I love how rich and blendable they are I''ve been using copics a lot in the past and these markers are a perfect substitute if you''re on a budget.
The tri-blend are actually a much needed product. In a single marker, you have 3 different values of a single color so you can easily work from light to dark. You can get a set here: LINK
It''s really handy to just pop the marker in two and work through the colors that way.

P.S. What is one thing you have a hard time drawing, and you just need some pointers on how to do it better?

This is the last Inktober52 prompt before the October Inktober challenge starts! Are you ready?
The next 5 Inktober52 prompts after this week are the same prompts as the Inktober Challenge. This is where the year long Inktober52 challenge folds into the month long Inktober challenge and the two become one for a month.
Ok, now on to the prompt for week 39 of Inktober52.
This week''s Inktober 52 prompt is:
Not sure what Inktober 52 is? Learn about it here: LINK
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.39 is "DUNGEON" ??
The dank dark dungeon! What kind of imagery does this inspire? What lurks in dungeons? Who dares to enter a dungeon and for what? This is a great chance to draw a picture that tells some kind of story.
Have fun!

No.47 is "STAIRS" ??
Stairs are not easy to draw and this one might push your abilities a little bit, but don''t let that discourage you. This is a chance to level up and improve your craft. Some of you might even want to try drawing a spiral stair case!
What kind of imagery do stairs inspire? Could they be symbolic of elevating yourself to new heights? Or could it be an obstacle to overcome? Looking forward to your drawings this week!

Hello!
Loved seeing all the RED and GREEN this month in our feed! Thanks again to Spectrum Noir inspired us to add a little color to the challenge this month. They love what is going on with #inktober52 and reached out to sponsor Inktober52 during April.
For the rest of the month we will be throwing different colors into the mix with each prompt. This week: BLUE
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
Prompt No.16 is "blue." ??For this week''s Inktober 52 prompt I''m sticking with this idea of old robots being reclaimed by nature. For BLUE I thought it would be cool to have a family of blue griffon things who have taken up residence in an old war robot that has sunken into a hill. Perhaps a victim of a mudslide or something.
For this drawing I used the Spectrum Noir Illustrator Markers and the Tri-Blend Markers. I love the richness and blendability of these markers. I''ve been using copics a lot in the past and these markers are a perfect substitute if you''re on a budget.

P.S. What is your biggest challenge related to drawing or inking? Please reply.
Hi,
Wanted to share an inking tip with you from the new Inktober book "Inktober All Year Long." How you hold your inking tool can directly effect the kinds of lines you want to make. Here''s a couple pages from the book on the subject:
This book is full of tips and principles to make you a more creative, and accomplished drawer.
It comes out in a few weeks and you can get a copy of it here: LINK
This week''s prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.34 is "GAUNTLET" ??
I thought this would be an interesting word to work from. A gauntlet is the piece of armor that covers the hand. They look cool, and show up in a lot of fantasy related art. There''s also the phrase "To run the gauntlet." This is to take part in a form of corporal punishment in which the party judged guilty is forced to run between two rows of soldiers, who strike out and attack him. But it also means to get through a tough situation.
Do you ever feel like you''re running the gauntlet? What does that look like for you?
Do you wish you had some magic gauntlets? If so, what kind of powers would they have?
Ok, lets see what you can do with this prompt. Have fun!

Do you wish you had some magic gauntlets? If so, what kind of powers would they have?
Ok, lets see what you can do with this prompt. Have fun!

P.S. Thanks to everyone who bought an Artsnacks Inktober box! They''re all sold out now and won''t be available again until next year. If you missed out you can get on a list to be notified if any more come on the market, or when the new box arrives next year.
Hi,
Jake here. I hope this email finds you well and safe. I know there''s a lot of painful and turbulent things going on in the world right now. Specifically in the U.S., it is a time for much needed reflection and change. Each one of us has a different part we can play, and there are many lanes in a revolution. Some protest publicly, others donate privately, while many more are having tough conversations with friends and families. All are helpful.
It''s a weird time to be drawing and honestly, I haven''t felt very creative lately. However, I''m reminding myself art shouldn''t be abandoned, but embraced in times of trouble. So I''m going to continue drawing, because I think putting good, creative things into the world is important work. Outside of all things art, I am endeavoring to make the world in my personal circle of influence a better place and hope that you are doing the same.
If you have time this week to do a drawing, here''s this week''s prompt:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.23 is "Shell." ??

Hello!
I hope you had fun with the robot prompt . It was great to see everyone''s robot drawings. So many creative ideas out there!
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.22 is "stranded." ??
Have you ever been stranded somewhere? What did you do to pass the time? Have you ever come accross something stranded on the beach? What was it? Let these questions inspire your drawings this week. there are several variables you can play with here to come up with a creative illustration:
1) Who or what is stranded?
2) Where are they stranded?
3) What are they doing because of it?
4) Why were they stranded?
Ok, have fun!

My New Inktober Book is up for Pre-Order now! LINK
Hi,
I got permission from ArtSnacks to reveal the exclusive sketchbook that''s included in this years Inktober Art Box. I had the unique priviledge to design the cover art for this sketchbook, and I''m REALLY happy with how it turned out. I posted it on instagram, but in case you missed it, here it is. This is an excellent sketchbook to draw in and I'm honored to have my art on it.
Here''s the original art that I made which was then put on the sketchbook.
You can get this exclusive and limited sketchbook in this:
Every year I do a box with Artsnacks that''s curated with some amazing supplies and tools. I can''t tell you what else is in this box, because it''s a surprise, but there is some VERY COOL stuff in it. If you want to freshen up your drawing tools, this box is for you. If you are new to inking and drawing, this box will get you going in the right direction.
Order it here: LINK
Artsnacks just told me that the supply is starting to get low, so don''t sleep on this because they do sell out and there''s a couple items in here that are exclusive, that I had a hand in designing, and they won''t ever be available again.

This week''s prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.33 is "BRAIN" ??
What could you possibly draw that has to do with brains? How about visual puns? What would a brains storm look like, or a think tank, or a mind puzzle?
You could draw something that desperately want''s a brain like zombies, scarecrows, or politicians.
Or what might happen if something was given too much brain power?
Use you brain and come up with something creative!

Hello!
Hope you''re week has been good. Here''s the new prompt for this week of Inktober 52:
And here''s the last 8 prompts in case you missed them:
Prompt No.9 is "wave." ??
I think the word "wave" has so many creative possibilities. You could draw a surfer catching one. You could design a character waving to the viewer. There''s all kinds of waves. You could draw a storm out on the open sea. For the scientist artist, it would be cool to see your vision of gravitational waves. So many possibilities! Have fun!

I''m almost all caught up. Just need to do "hammer." You can see my posts here: LINK
Thanks,
Jake
P.S. The latest episode of 3 Point Perspective is out. All about what you should put on your portfolio website. Valuable information! LINK
Hello!
I asked my daughter what today''s prompt should be and she thought for a moment and said:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.20 is "bubbles." ??
I''m really excited to see what you come up with for bubbles. What would a bubble monster look like? How about a bubble flying craft? What about a kid who had a bubble blowing accident...but it''s taken to the extreme? What if a kid fins a magic bottle of bubble juice, what would the magic bubbles look like or do?
Have fun with it, and see you next week!

Question of the day: What''s the hardest part of doing Inktober 52?
Hello!
The fine folks behind Spectrum Noir love what is going on with #inktober52 and reached out to sponsor the challenge for the month of April. The next four prompts this month will all be based on a color! This week the color is GREEN.
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
Prompt No.14 is "green." ??With springtime finally here we thought it would be cool to add a little color to our inktober drawings. What kinds of things does the color green bring to mind? As I was thinking about this, I looked out my window (I live in the desert here in Arizona) and I saw all kinds of bright green cactus thriving in this otherwise dry landscape. I let that inspire this drawing:I''m using the Spectrum Noir "Illustrator" Marker packs they sell here: LINK
These markers are great. I''ve been using them off and on for a couple years now. They''ve got all the richness of Copic markers, but are half the price. If you''re looking to get into markers, and you''re on a budget, these might be for you.
Check out the rest of the Spectrum Noir line here: LINK

Again, special thanks to Spectrum Noir for sponsoring this email and the Inktober52 challenge this month. They make good quality products that I actually use, so I''m happy to help spread the word about this company and their markers.
Thanks,
Jake
P.S. Almost 900 people have pre-ordered my new ART BOOK! Find out more about it here: LINK
Hello!
One of the first things I saw online this morning was a praying mantis eating a murder hornet and it filled me with a full range of emotions. Not the least of which was intense satisfaction coupled with disgust. Google it if you dare.
But then I thought how cool these little animals are. They have such a pleasing aesthetic, yet are perfectly designed to hunt and devour. Can''t stop thinking about them so they are this week''s prompt:
And here''s the rest of the prompts so far this year:
No.19 is "praying mantis." ??
Check out the wikipedia article on them to better familiarize yourself with the breadth of the species : LINK
Ideas for you to draw:
- Draw your best praying mantis.
- What is a visual pun or comic you could do with a praying mantis?
- Draw a super hero inspired by the praying mantis.
- Draw a robo-mantis.
- Draw a mantis monster.
- Draw a praying mantis in a suit and tie.

P.S. What word would you like to see as a prompt some day in the future?
Hello!
Hope you are settling into the new year, being productive, energized, and happy. We are loving all the latest drawings being posted. It''s so good to see people excited to draw and create this year despite all the unsettling things happening in the world. We hope that Inktober can be somewhat of an escape, and a chance to use your creative spark to make something that will make you happy. With that, let''s get down to the next prompt!
INKTOBER 52!
Not sure what Inktober 52 is? Learn about it here: LINK
This week''s Inktober 52 prompt is:
And here''s the rest of the weekly Inktober52 prompts from the year in case you want to do some more:
No.2 is "HOME" ??
This week we pull inspiration from the word "home." There are so many possibilities here. If you have an OC or designed a new character last year, this would be a good opportunity to design where they live. You could draw the home you grew up in from memory. You could draw your dream home. Or pick a fantasy creature and draw what you think their home might look like.
Can''t wait to see what you come up with!
