Where has the summer gone?! It's already the very end of July, and August is just around the corner.

For many of us that signals we're on the backside of summer so many will take these next 30 days to go on those late-summer vacations before school starts up again. Before we know it, the temps will be cooling down, and that can't come soon enough for much of the country.

NYC Makes Second Bid to Shake Off Supreme Court Scrutiny

Apparently cognizant of the risks of pressing ahead with the defense of its nonsensical and extreme firearm law, New York City has now ramped up its arguments that the legal challenge to the law is “moot” and no longer merits the intervention of the United States Supreme Court.

In January, the Supreme Court had agreed to hear the appeal in the case, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. City of New York, No. 18-280. The central issue in the litigation is whether New York City’s “ban on transporting a licensed, locked and unloaded handgun to a home or shooting range outside city limits is consistent with the Second Amendment, the commerce clause and the constitutional right to travel.”

Highly Touted Study Tests Non-Existent Policies, Uses Deceptive Data

A study published in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics this week generated considerable media attention that focused on the purported finding and not the underlying research design:

• “Gun control tied to fewer child deaths: Study”
• “Who’d A Thunk It? Tougher Gun Laws Mean Fewer U.S. Kids Die, Study Shows”
• “Tougher Gun Laws Do Mean Fewer American Kids Die”
• “Fewer American Kids Die in States with Tougher Gun Laws, According to This New Study”
• “New Study Shows Kids Are 35 Percent Less Likely to Die in States with Strict Gun Laws”
• “Children in States with Strict Gun Laws are Less Likely to Die, According to a New Study”

Those are some pretty strong headlines. The study behind these headlines is bogus; it relies on very loose variable definitions and interpretations, seemingly prioritizes convenience over substance, and was likely only published because it found that gun-control is good.

“Fact Checker:” Joe Biden’s “Gun Ban” Not a Gun Ban Because Some Guns Wouldn’t Be Banned

Facebook has teamed up with what it calls “third-party fact-checkers” to punish users of its platform that post information embarrassing or inconvenient to the political outlook of its principals. Yet like most sources of what passes as “news” or “journalism” these days, these “independent” organizations have knowledge deficits and outright biases that color the information they provide to the public. Take, for example, Politifact’s assertion that a gun ban is not a gun ban if there are still guns left to be banned.

Hollywood Fantasy v. Reality on Firearm Suppressors

It’s no secret that Hollywood has a very loose relationship with reality. The movie industry, after all, is based on fantasy and escapism, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If someone wants to forget about their daily struggles in the real world, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with sitting through the latest blockbuster; watching an improbable hero overcome overwhelming odds to save the day, America, Earth, or even the whole universe. Just try to remember not to confuse what you see on your screen with real life.

New Zealand Experience Further Proves Registration Facilitates Confiscations

Firearms registration facilitates firearms confiscation. This fact has been demonstrated in recent weeks, as the New Zealand authorities have lamented that the country does not have a firearms registry to assist them in their gun confiscation efforts.

Following a high-profile shooting in Christchurch, the New Zealand government enacted the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines, and Parts) Amendment Act 2019. The legislation prohibited the sale and civilian possession of all centerfire semi-automatic rifles. Further, the bill banned semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns “that are capable of holding more than 5 cartridges commensurate with that firearm’s chamber size” or capable of accepting a detachable magazine. All detachable centerfire rifle magazines were also prohibited.

Bill Clinton Touts Failed Gun Ban With Bogus Info

Bill and Hillary Clinton just don’t draw like they used to. Shunned by much of his own party, (described by one Vanity Fair commentator as “2020’s bubonic plague”) the former president has been relegated to providing lazy commentary on the issues of the day.

Such was the case this week when the would-be first gentleman penned an op-ed touting one of his presidential administration’s abject policy failures, the so-called “assault weapons” ban.

Advocates of so-called “universal” background checks constantly cite their own polling data to claim that the vast majority of Americans support these measures.

But, when these measures have actually been presented to voters, support is nothing close to universal.

Kamala Harris and Her Perplexing Anti-Gun Ideas

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), one of the two-dozen Democrat presidential hopefuls vying to take on President Donald Trump in 2020, has been promoting her anti-gun platform for many months.

This isn’t really news, as every Democrat seeking the party’s nomination has embraced virulently anti-gun policies in some way, shape or form.

The apparent task of each candidate, including Harris, is to prove he or she is the MOST anti-gun. This, it would appear, is necessary to satisfy the anti-gun extremists that hope to guide the entire Democrat Party down the path of eviscerating the Second Amendment.

California Federal Judge: Semi-automatics and Machineguns are “Virtually Indistinguishable”

The ever-gushing fount of legal imagination that is California has provided the rest of America with another head-scratcher.

On July 22, Judge Josephine L. Statonof the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California granted defendant California Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s motion for summary judgment in Rupp v. Becerra, a case challenging the latest iteration of the California Assault Weapons Control Act (AWCA).

According to the judge, commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms like the AR-15 “are virtually indistinguishable” from fully-automatic machineguns.

NRA Member Berated for Carrying Firearm

NRA member Darrell Kennedy was on vacation with his family at Yellowstone National Park earlier this month when an anti-gun vacationer snapped a photo of his holstered firearm and tweeted out a hate message.

“Sat waiting for Old Faithful the Yellowstone geyser to blow. Lots of families, kids and people having a good time. Then I spot this (expletive) in front of me with a revolver strapped to his side. Is there really any need? Most people I’ve met in the US want gun control,” the tweet read.

Yes, some of the more astute members of the site may notice that this is a September newsletter, and we are just past the cutoff to really be able to call it that. But rest assured, this is the September newsletter, and there will be another later this month, the official October edition.

The delay is caused by a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that I'm away from home for an extended period of time, and thus with limited resources.

We've had a lot going on, and for those of you who are Team Members, there's a long thread in the Team forum that describes it all in detail.

For those who are not, I apologize, but opsec required the topic be handled in a more secure environment than GD. So if you want to catch up, this would be a great time to join us as a Team member!

ARFCOM TeeSpring Store

Some of you may have noticed all of our products have been removed from the ARFCOM store.

In the future, fulfillment will be through the Brownells web site to provide better and faster service to our customers.

While we are in transition, we've made available many of our designs on a TeeSpring web site, so you can order.

The products are not all available there, but many of the HTF designs are, and some of them are new products, so be sure to check them out.

Also, new items will be added to the shop every month and we will also have limited production runs for unique shirts and stickers throughout the year.

Front Sight Firearms Training Institute

Dr. Ignatius Piazza has been going strong for many years now in building Front Sight's facilities on a 550 acre site in Nevada.

He has done this by offering potential students an opportunity to experience their training, first-hand, and free of charge.

There is currently a 4-Day Defensive Handgun Course, with a value of $2000, available free of charge.

The video describes what you get and how to get it.

I hope to be able to update everyone on the current status and growth of the facility through my own visit in the coming weeks.

Gun Club 82

I recently had the chance to tour a new indoor gun club, the first of its kind, coming to Gilbert, AZ later this year.

It brings shooting and technology together, similar to what TopGolf has done for golf, in that you can electronically manage, score, and manipulate targets that you shoot at with live ammo and your guns.

So this allows you to train with your own weapons, yet spice up the target opportunities in an indoor, air-conditioned environment as well as to compete with friends.

The facility will also include a restaurant, Ti Ammo, and a roof top hangout/bar.

Alcoholic beverages end your shooting day, but they are available on-site to top of the shooting experience.

We are also looking to do a local ARFCOM event here prior to their opening, so keep an eye out for that, likely end of November, beginning of December time frames.

Where the House Judiciary Actually Got Things Right

While there was plenty wrong with Wednesday’s House Judiciary Hearing on H.R. 1296, the proposed ban on semi-automatic firearms introduced by Representative David Cicilline (D-R.I.), there were some shining moments for those who still support the Second Amendment.

First, there were the two women who testified in opposition to the latest attempt at banning America’s most popular rifles.

NRA Supports Supreme Court Petition Against Massachusetts Semi-Auto Ban

On Monday, the plaintiffs in the NRA-supported case of Worman v. Healey filed their petition for writ of certiorari before the Supreme Court of the United States.

This case challenges Massachusetts’s unconstitutional ban on commonly-owned, semi-automatic firearms as a violation of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, citing the Supreme Court rulings in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago.

Anti-gun AGs Push So-called “Universal” Background Checks for Ammunition

Gun control laws aren’t about stopping violent criminals, they are about burdening law-abiding gun owners.

Few pieces of anti-gun legislation illustrate this fact better than H.R.1705/S.1924, which would extend anti-gun lawmakers’ cumbersome so-called “universal” background check proposal to cover the commercial and private transfers of ammunition.

On September 23, this onerous plan received the support of 21 politically minded state attorneys general, who signed a letter to congressional leadership advocating for the proposal.

Virginia Police Chief Advocates Ban on All Guns at U.S. House “Assault Weapons” Hearing

On Sept. 25, the Democrat-led U.S. House Judiciary Committee held a 3 ½ hour “hearing” entitled “Protecting America From Assault Weapons.”

That framing of the issue underscored the erroneous notion that Americans need protection from inanimate objects, rather than from violent criminals who have and always will use any means at their disposal to harm innocent, defenseless people.

It also revealed the unfortunate agenda of the proceedings, which was to emphasize politics and finger-pointing over any useful exploration of how Congress might take meaningful steps to improve public safety.

KSG Build

We are going to be doing a build of a KeltTec KSG shotgun over the next few weeks.

The goal here will be to see what modifications and aftermarket accessories are worthwhile.

As such, I have ordered a number of parts that I think I would want on my build, as well as some extras so we can compare alternatives.

Parts that do not get used will be passed on to our readers (not sure exactly how yet), so that you guys can also evaluate some options.

At the same time, I look forward to hearing from any of you with experience in this to provide input along the way for everyone's benefit.

Dick’s Spends Big on Gun-Chopping, Virtue-Signaling Bonanza (But It Will Still Sell You a Firearm)

Ed Stack, the CEO of Dick’s Sporting Goods, wants you to know he’s committed to keeping AR-15s “off the street.” But he’s also committed (for the time being) to selling other types of firearms.

That’s the genius of Ed Stack. He’s perfectly capable of holding two contradictory opinions at the same time. He’ll take one sort of gun buyer’s money and then lecture another on the evils of firearms.

We call that being a hypocrite.

Number of Concealed Carry Permit Holders Increased Again

Last week, economist John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center released “Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States: 2019,” his annual report on the number of concealed carry permit holders in the U.S.

We’ll let Lott’s summary deliver the key finding:

“In 2019, the number of concealed handgun permits soared to now over 18.66 million – a 304% increase since 2007. About an 8% growth over the number of permits since 2018.”

Confiscation or "Mandatory Buyback"?

It is interesting to watch certain Democrats struggle when trying to convince law-abiding gun owners how “reasonable” it is for the government to take away your firearms. Do the anti-gun groups and candidates pushing confiscation honestly believe you’ll be fooled?

The Democrat plan to confiscate your firearms isn’t in question. In fact, the plan was laid bare by Robert Francis O'Rourkewhen, during the third Democrat Presidential Debates, he proclaimed, "Hell yes, we're gonna take your AR-15, your AK47…."

Assault on Firearm Industry Fails: Federal Court Dismisses Ohio Lawsuit

On October 9, a federal court in Ohio considered and dismissed, with prejudice, a lawsuit against Smith & Wesson, Remington, Sig Sauer, and other gun manufacturers, arising from a class action brought by Primus Group LLC. Primus Group LLC v. Smith & Wesson Corp., et al, No. 2:19-cv-3450, 2019 WL 5067211 (S.D. Ohio, Oct. 9, 2019).

The failed lawsuit sought “drastic and immediate judicial action” against the firearm manufacturers to include: financial damages, a declaration that “assault weapon” sales were a “public nuisance” under Ohio law, and an order requiring the manufacturers to establish a nuisance “abatement fund.”

Veteran Criticizes Police Practices, Gets Guns and Firearm License Seized by Chief of Police

That’s the harsh lesson 84-year-old Stephen Nichols learned last month when he was overheard criticizing one of Saloio’s employees for leaving his post as a school resource officer to drink coffee at a local convenience store during work hours. Nichols would later explain he couldn’t imagine someone whose job it was to guard kids leaving them defenseless.

KSG Build

I had hoped to have a preliminary report of all the accessories for the KSG already, but I just got the final parts delivered yesterday.

As a result, it will be a few days before I can get them all up, but my goal is to create a "catalog" type of list showing all the options (at least those I get my hands on) and how they all compare. Initially, in features, price, etc and eventually with results from the range, but that will have to wait until my return home in January, as I have no range here!

Additionally I find myself without the necessary tools to disassemble and install many of them while at my remote location, so again the install/range report will be January.

Joe Biden and His Gift for Gaffes

When the Democrats who are seeking their party’s nomination to run against Donald Trump in 2020 start talking about guns, anyone who supports our right to keep and bear arms knows to be concerned.

Of course, the details regarding how law-abiding gun owners will be targeted by whomever prevails to face Trump vary, depending on who is speaking. But every single one of them can clearly state how much he or she dislikes firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens, and what they will do to try to undermine the Second Amendment and our right to self-defense.

Except, perhaps, for Joe.

Member Spotlight: Meet an NRA Virginia mom who is telling voters to ‘watch out’ for Bloomberg’s tricks in 2020

Q. What was your initial reaction when you heard gun control politicians took control of the Virginia House and Senate?

A. I was disappointed, but not surprised. As a communications professional, I could tell from the political ads that gun control groups were targeting suburban women with emotional messages. They were clearly trying to shame women like myself into believing that law-abiding gun owners are the problem in Virginia.

Sanders Burns the 2020 Democratic Primary Gun Control Agenda

As anti-gun as the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders have exposed themselves to be, much of the field still gives lip-service to the Second Amendment and the Constitution.

Take for instance Joe Biden. The leading candidate’s campaign has said that Biden will seek to “respect the Second Amendment” and that “as president, Biden will pursue constitutional, common-sense gun safety policies.” However, take a critical look at the vast majority of the Democratic field for any limiting principle that would preclude even the most severe forms of gun control (like gun confiscation) and you will come up wanting.

To his credit, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has once again injected some much-needed sanity into a Democratic presidential primary.

Trading Freedom for Safety

“Nothing is more important than ensuring that our fellow students feel safe,” explained the editors of The Daily Northwestern, the campus newspaper at Northwestern University.

The statement was part of a lengthy apology published by the editors, after reporters had covered a public speech (and related disruptions and protests) by former Attorney General and current senatorial candidate, Jeff Sessions, at the university.

No Protection for the Law that Protects the Firearm Industry: Supreme Court Passes on PLCAA Case

A law designed to protect the firearm industry from frivolous litigation is now in jeopardy thanks to inaction by the U.S. Supreme Court, which earlier this month passed on a petition to review a case creating a new exception to the law’s protection. The case before the Supreme Court was Remington Arms v. Soto.

It’s hard to imagine a more ridiculous or implausible legal theory: a gunmaker intentionally marketed its products to criminals through macho ad copy, patriotic images, and product placement in video games, thus causing the criminal to carry out a mass attack.

Merry Christmas to all!

Just want to take a moment to thank all of our audience for a successful 2019; we are grateful to all of you and look forward to 2020!

SAR Show

Next month it's SHOT Show 2020 time, so we're getting ready to bring you all the cool new products from the show floor.

But this month I got a chance to walk around the Small Arms Review show in Phoenix, AZ. This was my first time, and it's described as follows:

"It's the largest gun show west of the Rockies!"

"Small Arms Review and Crossroads of the West Gun Shows are proud to bring you SAR West. Occurring every December in Phoenix, Arizona since the year 2000; SAR West is the place to be with our wide range of products, vendors, and excellent networking opportunities. The show offers hundreds of exhibitors, thousands of firearms, and a diverse range of ammunition with millions in standing inventory. Come with questions about your weapon of choice, get to know the industry experts, and make connections with local support groups."

"We have machine guns, mounts, rifles, scopes, tactical gear, laser systems, hand guns, suppressors, destructive devices, target supplies, knives, parts kits, military vehicles, weapon & military history books, and much more!"

It was definitely a large show, with a wide variety of products and vendors; everything from big name companies to individual/private sales. They had new products, and old collectibles spread about evenly.

It was not a lot of the same thing over and over, as you see in many shows- this one definitely had variety both in new firearms, and a lot of odd, collectible, and less-common older weapons, parts, and accessories which were interesting.

It would take a full day to walk around and see everything, I ended up getting a taste of it in about a half day, but I definitely did not stop and look at everything. It was less crowded than many smaller shows, so easy to get access to tables, and I was there most of the late morning though early afternoon on Saturday.

It was worth the experience, I got to meet up with a number of ARFCOMMers, and I might just be back for it again next year!

Texas Gun Control Advocates Deride Actual Firearms Safety Efforts

Gun control advocates are not concerned with gun safety. This reality was brought home once again by the anti-gun reaction to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) and the firearm industry’s work to ensure Texans have free access to gun locks.

Following a high-profile shooting in Santa Fe, Texas in May 2018, Gov. Abbott released the School and Firearm Safety Action Plan. As part of the plan, the governor called on the state to promote the voluntary use of gun locks.

Nevada Concealed Firearm Permit Holders Lose NICS Exemption for Private Transfers

Nevada Concealed Firearm Permit holders are set to get a lump of coal in their stocking this Christmas.

Nevadans with a permit have long-enjoyed NICS-exempt status, which exempts these law-abiding individuals from having to undergo a National Instant Criminal Background Check System check every time they purchase a firearm from a gun dealer.

Thanks to SB 143, which criminalized the private transfer of firearms in the Silver State, as of January 2 permit holders will be forced to undergo a NICS check when they purchase a firearm from a private individual through a dealer.

Sorry, Not Sorry – Government Downplays Security Breach of “Buyback” Database

New Zealand’s dumpster fire of a government-mandated “buyback” program has become even more of a hot spot of contention.

Sources indicate that the sensitive personal information of gun owners kept in a police database became accessible to users of the buyback program website. The information includes names, addresses, firearm license numbers, and bank account details.

Pro-Gun Bill Introduced to Protect Lawful Gun Carriers from Federal-State Legal Trap

Earlier this year, U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) introduced a bill that would protect persons lawfully carrying firearms under state law, including in those states that do not require a carry permit, from being snared by a confusing provision of federal criminal law. This week U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) introduced a companion measure in the House.

Federal law generally bans the carrying of firearms in a “school zone,” which includes not just the grounds of the school itself but a zone that extends 1,000 feet in all directions beyond the school grounds.

Crooked California: Bad Gun Control Laws Once Again Foster Official Corruption

In news that will not shock gun rights supporters, the anti-gun utopia of California has provided further evidence that unjust gun control laws invite official corruption.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, former San Diego County Sheriff’s Captain Marco Garmo was arrested on November 22 for allegedly using his position to circumvent the state’s “roster of certified handguns.”Further, another individual allegedly made “unlawful payments”to a member of the county’s “CCW processing staff”to assist in the acquisition of may-issue California Concealed Weapons Permits.

NRA's Statement on Second Amendment Sanctuaries

As the Nation’s oldest civil rights organization, we recognize civic engagement as a virtue not a vice.

Liberty is reliant upon the participation of free people, and this includes the vast number of citizens and communities who are lawfully exercising their rights under the First Amendment to defend their freedoms under the Second.

It is the tyrannical nature of politicians that triggers sanctuary, not the other way around. The NRA has steadfastly defended freedom for nearly 150 years, and we have no intention of suppressing virtuous voices against governmental oppression—censoring is what our opponents do.

VCDL Lobby Day 2020

On January 20th, tens of thousands of patriots showed up at Virginia’s capitol to protest the unconstitutional gun control bills proposed by Gov "Black Face" Northam and his fellow Virginia Democrats.

State of Ignorance: California Pushes False Information to School Kids on the Second Amendment

As an incorporated provision of the United States Bill of Rights, the Second Amendment is the supreme law of the land, applying to all U.S. jurisdictions and to the actions of federal, state, and local officials.
