In addition to putting on HOW Design Live, we attend conferences, so we know just how exciting it is to see the fresh-faced new speakers at different events every year. (And trust us when I say we’ve got a heck of a lineup of new kids on the block for you!) But at our show, it’s always been important to us to bring your favorite speakers back—and it’s the reason HOW Design Live often feels more like a family reunion (the good kind!) than the kind of event that rolls into town for a few days, then rolls out.

Justin Ahrens With his brutal honesty and sheer passion, the principal and creative director of Rule29 has long been one of our most engaging speakers—not to mention one of the industry’s most forward-thinking designers. This year he’ll be presenting “How to Collaborate and Not Lose Your Mind,” in which he’ll offer a medley of practical tips and case studies designed to help you do just that. Ahrens knows the subject well—and we’ve witnessed that firsthand. In years past, HOW Design Live paired up with Wheels4Water, a nonprofit Ahrens co-founded to help bring clean water to thousands in Africa, as our official philanthropic partner. Terri Trespicio Simply put: We love Terri Trespicio. Hilarious, vibrant and wise, she co-hosted HOW Design Live a few years back, and this year we’re delivering a Trespicio double-shot. She’ll be presenting the session “Beyond Branding: Going From Selling Something to Meaning Something,” and she’ll also be leading “The Pop-Up Story Salon for Thinkers, Makers & Writers.” For the latter, Trespicio doesn’t believe that one’s creative genius is simply something they can stumble upon—you have to create the right conditions for it to emerge. And in this intensive workshop that kicks off HOW Design Live, she’ll be teaching you a method to uncork and unblock your mind so you can truly unleash your very best work. 
Bill Gardner Logos! Glorious logos! What designer doesn’t love them? As the founder of LogoLounge.com, Bill Gardner loves them perhaps even more than most—and so for years he has been our logo sherpa at HOW Design Live. In 2020 he’ll be back once again with his uber-popular Logo Trend Report, in which he sheds light on the latest happenings in the logo world, giving the audience valuable clues as to where the next gen of logos is headed. Joanna Peńa-Bickley: UX/UI Joanna Peńa-Bickley has been dubbed “a 21st Century Renaissance Woman,” and rightfully so: her work is vast and versatile, not to mention wildly brilliant. She has held such titles as Global Chief Creative Officer at IBM and Chief Creative Officer of Matter Worldwide, and today works as Head of Design, Internet of Things, at Amazon. Over the years she has also collaborated with such brands as United, Verizon, Macy’s, Reebok, Land Rover, Danon, and many more. As she has said, “Creativity is piercing the mundane to discover the magical.” Expect a slate of UX/UI sessions designed to help you do just that. Stephen Gates: Leadership Last year at HOW Design Live, Stephen Gates said the following of designers: “We are in a moment in time where, as creative people, we have the ability to affect business in ways we have not seen since the industrial revolution.” Designers can be leaders within organizations—but they need to know how to get a seat at the table, and how to stay there. As the Head Design Evangelist at InVision, Stephen Gates works with teams and design leaders of all sizes and all maturity levels, which makes him the perfect person to curate a lineup focused on how designers can truly be impactful and transformative leaders. 
Stefan Mumaw: Design + Creativity Stefan Mumaw has been a HOW Design Live mainstay for years—and he has even been deemed by some as the heart of the event. His tall stature is matched by his exuberant personality, which attendees first encounter when Mumaw leads the HOW Connection networking event every year. A brilliant speaker and Creative Director of numerous shops over the years, Mumaw intimately knows the type of sessions that make HOW Design Live tick—and he’ll be bringing more of them in 2020.The networking opportunities at HOW Design Live will give you the chance to connect with other creatives throughout the week. You’ll establish lasting, impactful relationships with everyone from speakers onstage to other designers. Cecilia Ambros: Marketing + Branding Cecilia Ambros, Head of Global Creative Studios for Amazon Advertising, is a force of nature in the industry. Creative, collaborative and innovative, she comes from a design background working everywhere from Whirlpool and McDonald’s to Nike, where she served as Global Design Studio Director. She joined Amazon in 2014 and has built a vast network over the years, and will no doubt be tapping into the very best of it for HOW Design Live. 
Zachary Petit: Design + Creativity Zachary Petit joined the staff of HOW and PRINT magazines in 2013, later becoming Editor-in-Chief of PRINT and Content Director of both brands, and leading the publications to first-place wins in the industry’s top competitions. He left to work with Debbie Millman on the publishing arm of Design Matters, and today serves as Editor-in-Chief of Design Matters Media, writes for a variety of magazines and design outlets, and teaches journalism. Having helped program HOW Design Live for a number of years, he says he’s elated to be back bringing fresh voices and ideas to the event.

Chris Thomas As far as session titles go, Chris Thomas’ might take the cake: “Beards, BBQ and Insecurity: A Guide to Creative Self-Discovery.”
Thomas, founder of the agency Yonder, describes himself as 45% creative, 45% strategic and … 10% barbecue. And each one of those sides is essential. As he describes his session, “We all have a unique creative process that was born out of who we are as a person, which is why everyone’s process is unique. But making peace with who you are can be a lot harder than you think, and it can have a huge influence over your career and creativity.” The key is not to abandon your roots to fit someone else’s business mold, but to utilize them as the launch pad of your creative process and the key to your future. Boyuan Gao + Jahan Mantin As principals and founders of Project Inkblot, Gao and Mantin spend their days partnering with clients to teach Design for Diversity — a methodology focused on growing businesses by equipping teams with the tools to identify cultural and racial biases in their workflows. As the two have described, they have designed programs for female entrepreneurs, the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalized groups—and they realized that the very people they were trying to reach for clients didn’t have a seat at the table. So, they decided to develop a process to change that—and they’ve since worked on D4D initiatives at Etsy, The New School, Indiegogo, New York Public Radio, WeWork and other institutions. At HOW Design Live, they’ll break the process down for all creatives to absorb and put into practice. Luke Wessman Having grown up on the rough streets of Southern California and overcome homelessness and a host of other extreme situations, Wessman learned the craft of tattooing and today is known as one of the industry’s most skilled personalities. His career includes forays into fashion and television, and he has designed such massive campaigns as Jay-Z’s #GoVote initiative and worked with brands ranging from Hermes to Harley-Davidson. The sheer number of partnerships he has successfully developed is a testament to his talent—not to mention the wildly successful personal brand that he built from the ground up. At HOW Design Live, he will discuss the latter, offering insights into how everyone can better their own brand and prime their careers for long-term success. Keep your business and your brand fresh.
