The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) is pleased to announce the Global Leaders in the Advancement and Development of Palliative Care (GLAD) Program.

The GLAD program is designed to support palliative care workers from any discipline, who have demonstrated leadership capabilities, and who wish to advance palliative care in their own countries in line with United Nations (UN) Organizations resolutions and commitments and builds on the Leadership Development Initiative (LDI) to increase global palliative care capacity. The program was designed by a working group of IAHPC board members and officers, including Dingle Spence, Gulnara Kunirova, Harmala Gupta, Mary Callaway, Liliana De Lima, Katherine Pettus, Genevieve Napier, and external advisers Frank Ferris and Shannon Moore.

The GLAD program aligns with the Advocacy thematic areas of work identified in the IAHPC 2020-2024 Strategic Plan. This calls for the integration of palliative care into primary health care, within the spectrum of universal health coverage, and for improved access to essential palliative care medications. The program falls under the Strategic Objective 1.2: "To develop a global cadre of IAHPC members to advocate for improved access to essential palliative care medicines at national, regional and global levels."

Applicants will be required to complete an online application and present a project proposal focusing on the implementation in their country of the provisions in one or more of the following Conventions/Resolutions:

1. Organization of American States: Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons (A-70) (2015). Washington, DC (for applicants residing in Latin American and the Caribbean).
2. UN. Political Declaration on Universal Health Coverage, 2019. NY.?
3. UN. Chapter Two of the Outcome Document of the 2016 United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the World Drug Problem.?
4. UN. CND resolution EC/CN.7/2020/L4/Rev. 1 Promoting awareness-raising, education and training as part of a comprehensive approach to ensuring access to and the availability of controlled substances for medical and scientific purposes and improving their rational use?
5. World Health Organization: Astana Declaration on Primary Health Care, 2018.
6. World Health Assembly. Strengthening of PC as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course, Resolution 67/19. Geneva, 2014.
7. Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
8. World Health Assembly? Covid-19 Response Resolution. Resolution 73/1. Geneva, 2020.

Project proposals may relate to:

• improving availability of, access to, and affordability of essential palliative care medicines in the public system;
• inclusion of palliative care in clinical education curricula;
• service implementation for marginalized populations, and/or?
• policy and budget development at the national level.?

Selected applicants will be provided US $3,000 stipend for the first year with another amount (not exceeding US $3,000) to be determined for the second year, for travel to a UN organization meeting as part of the IAHPC delegation, depending on pandemic related travel restrictions. Selected leaders will be required to develop, implement, and report on project progress during the two-year term

Candidates wishing to apply for the GLAD program must meet the following criteria:

• Have been an IAHPC member for two consecutive years at the time of the application. Note: Selected candidates must retain their IAHPC membership throughout the period of the project.?
• Have demonstrated leadership skills and capabilities and be recognized as leaders in palliative care in their respective countries.
• Be dedicated full-time to palliative care. Note: Applicants holding more than one part-time position in palliative care may qualify if the sum of their hours equal to a full-time position.
• Be a current member of their national palliative care association (if there is one legally formed and active).
• Have taken the online IAHPC Basic Advocacy course.
• Have (at least) intermediate level English writing skills and basic level verbal skills. A free written test will be provided, and candidates will be required to provide their score.
• Have access to Internet broadband and be able to use Zoom or Skype.
• Depending on the travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, candidates should be able to travel and actively participate as a member of the IAHPC delegation in one meeting of a UN organization (the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, the World Health Assembly and World Health Organization in Geneva, or the UN Headquarters in New York). Candidates should have a valid passport and any other documents needed to travel. Otherwise, and if the meeting is held virtually, the candidate will be required to participate virtually.
• Have a letter of support from the candidate's direct supervisor stating that if selected, the institution supports the candidate's participation and allows time for the completion of tasks.?
• Be willing and available to have virtual meeting with a member of the working group.

Preference will be given to candidates:

• Whose institution is a current IAHPC member.

Deadline to apply is August 31st, 2020.

Leaders will be announced the first week of November 2020.

As coronavirus spreads all over the world, we continue to commit to our vision of a world free from health-related suffering. Although palliative care can't stop the pandemic, it can provide ethical guidance and alleviate much of the associated physical, psycho-social and spiritual distress for patients with COVID-19.?

In solidarity and to provide support, the IAHPC has implemented several benefits to support the global palliative care community and our members:?

• We have reduced the IAHPC membership fee by 20% until the end of May 2020 across all membership categories. If your membership is still current, the renewal will extend your membership for the duration that matches your payment. If your membership has expired, we invite you to renew through our website. IAHPC Learning Opportunities - Platform to Calculate SHS data and Estimate Palliative Need

Dear IAHPC Members and colleagues,

The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) together with the University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas (UMIA), and the Mexican Health Foundation (FUNSALUD) launched an online platform for advocates, academics, public health experts and policy makers. The database is founded on the data by the Lancet Commission on Global Access to Palliative Care and Pain Relief (LCGAPR).

The platform, created by researchers at UMIA and FUNSALUD, works in Tableau and enables users to calculate serious health related suffering (SHS) and the need for palliative care by income and geographic region for a vast number of countries. The platform is housed in the IAHPC website, as a service to the global palliative care community.?

Palliative Care Civil Society Roundtable

Dear IAHPC Members and colleagues,?

On November 25, 2020 at 3:00 - 4:30 pm Central European Time, please join the IAHPC leadership in a roundtable discussion on the "Integration of Palliative Care?into National COVID Response Plans per WHA73/1".

This invitation is open to all International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) members as well as palliative care colleagues, and is organized by the IAHPC, the Worldwide Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance, and the International Federation on Ageing.

The objectives are to provide opportunities for an open discussion, to identify priorities and areas of work to advance the implementation and uptake of several WHO resolutions relevant to palliative care.

IAHPC Members' Recognition Month

Win an IAHPC Scholarship plus 1-year Membership!

IAHPC benefits every day from the hard work of our members who are devoted to the advancement of hospice and palliative care worldwide. Members exemplify a continuing commitment to patient care, improved education and favorable policies, consistent with our mission.

October is our Members' Recognition Month when we highlight the vital function that our members play in the advancement of our mission and formally acknowledge their support.

IAHPC will be giving a prize in the following two categories:

1. Recognizing Loyalty:

• Goal: to maintain the loyalty of members by giving a prize among those individual and institution(s) who keep their memberships active over the years.
• Conditions: The prize will be an IAHPC Scholarship of $1,000 plus a 1-year membership. The winner will be randomly selected among the members that meet the eligibility criteria.
• Eligibility: Open to current IAHPC members (individuals and institutions) who have kept their membership active for at least 3 consecutive years by October 31, 2020. Institutions may be represented by a single designated individual.

2. Increasing Membership

• Goal: to increase the number of members by giving a prize to the current member who brings the highest number of new or renewed members.
• Conditions: The prize will be an IAHPC Scholarship of $1,000 plus a 1-year membership. The current member who brings the highest number of new or renewed members until October 31, 2020 will be the winner.
• Eligibility: Open to current IAHPC members (individuals and institutions) in all countries of the world. Institutions may be represented by a single designated individual. Only registered participants will be eligible to participate.

• IAHPC staff members, relatives and directors are not eligible to participate.
• Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions in travel, the scholarships are to be used to attend online events.

Alert: IAHPC''s name being used in Email Scam

We have been informed that several people have received an email stating they have been selected to receive payment from the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) COVID-19 Support Fund.?The email uses the IAHPC logo and uses a return address from London, UK.

The email states you need to pay for the custom fees in order to receive the payment and request you send a confirmation email to an email address in the UK.

This message and any other similar ones are false - the IAHPC has not set up such a fund. If you receive this message, please DO NOT respond. This is a scam and it is intended to rob you of your money and personal information.

We have reported the scam to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

Global Palliative Care Database

The use of electronic health records may improve health care quality, information sharing for evidence based approaches and policies, and reduce the cost of care provision. The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) is pleased to announce a joint collaboration project with the Fundaci?n FEMEBA (Federaci?n M?dica de Buenos Aires, Argentina) to develop a?Global Palliative Care Database?(GPCD)?from palliative care services from around the?world.

The objectives of this project are to:

1. Provide demographic, epidemiological information of patients at the time of the first consult with a palliative care service
2. Identify the prevalent symptoms at the time of the initial palliative care consultation
3. Identify the therapeutic interventions recommended for the treatment and management of the symptoms identified in the consultation
4. Analyze the similarities and differences among and prepare a report for publication.

The database shows the?similarities and differences among reasons for referral and time of referral to palliative care services, as well as prescribed therapeutic interventions and referrals to other disciplines. The system registers items adapted from "An essential package of palliative care and pain relief health services" in The Lancet Commission on Global Access to Palliative Care and Pain Relief Report (2018).

Following confidentiality guidelines, no sensitive data is requested or recorded.

How is the GPCD useful to users?

The GPCD?allows users to register, analyze, and have access to information?(general, demographic, and epidemiological / clinical) about the initial consultations of patients accessing palliative care services. If the user gives authorization to share its data, the system offers two options: one to see their own data and another to see collated data.

The GPCD?generates instantaneous reports on screen and offers the option to download the data in Excel spreadsheets?containing all the anonymized information supplied by the services. The video below provides a glimpse on how the database provides collated information:

Individuals working in palliative care provision from around the globe are welcome to participate. Those interested in participating in this project must meet the following criteria:

• be an IAHPC member (join the IAHPC),?
• be a current provider of palliative care to patients
• be 18 years or older
• has access to patients' records
• has obtained permission from the institution to participate in this study
• has obtained patients' approval to share their data for this study

Participants who have met all the criteria will be provided with the following

• an individual access code to the system
• instructions on the use of the database
• description of the questionnaire

Individuals who participate in the project will be provided with a free six-month extension of their membership as a gesture of gratitude for their contribution and effort to advance global palliative care.

To enroll in the project and access the database, you will need your IAHPC membership number and the email affiliated to your membership.

Dear IAHPC Friends,

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought home the importance of palliative care education throughout the world.

With the hope of encouraging a lifetime interest in palliative care, the IAHPC is offering a 1-year free membership to undergraduate college/university students of any discipline.?Students can renew their membership annually at no cost as long as their undergraduate status is maintained.?To review the criteria and enrol, please go to the IAHPC undergraduate membership website.?

The IAHPC is also providing 1-year free memberships to palliative care post graduate students.?The palliative care program must be a Diploma, Masters, PhD, or a Specialist Training such as Interns, Residents, and Fellows. In order to qualify, the institution must list their palliative care programs on the IAHPC Global Directory of Educational Programs in Palliative Care. Special Announcement:?Global Project - Palliative Care and COVID-19 Series

Dear friends and colleagues,?

In the spirit of solidarity, the four global palliative care organizations [the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), the International Children's Palliative Care Network (ICPCN), Palliative Care in Humanitarian Aid Situations and Emergencies (PALCHASE), and the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA)] joined forces to develop a project on Palliative Care and COVID-19.?

The four organizations invited experts from around the world to produce a series of Briefing Notes followed by weekly webinars. We hope that the Briefing Notes and webinars will serve to strengthen health systems and further integrate palliative care in policies and national health strategies.?

The Briefing Notes and links to the Webinars will be posted on the Global Palliative Care COVID-19 website as resources free of charge to users. We will be using the WHPCA webinar platform for the webinars.?

The first webinar of the series will be this coming Friday April 17^th and will focus on Health systems and Issues specific to Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Speakers include:

How Pandemics affect Health Systems and Resource Allocation: Impact for Palliative Care

Professor Liz Grant, MD. Professor of Global Health and Development/ Director Global Health Academy, The University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dear colleagues, friends, and participants in the global palliative care series

Last month we closed the Global Palliative Care and Covid-19 Series, a collaboration of the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC), the International Children's Palliative Care Network (ICPCN), the Palliative Care in Humanitarian Aid Situations and Emergencies network (PalCHASE), and the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA).?

Thank you for agreeing to be contacted when you registered for the webinars. We understand that your time is precious and that there are many demands on it, but request that you please review and complete this brief survey about the global series. Your responses will help us to craft future informational and educational opportunities for palliative care workers in all settings. It shouldn't take you more than ten minutes to complete the survey, which addresses the relevance of the topics, the convenience of accessing the briefing notes and webinar recordings, and which topics we could address in the future.?

A total of 124 experts from 27 countries contributed to the global series. The survey seeks to ascertain if our joint global webinars should continue on a reduced schedule in order to develop the knowledge base of the global palliative care community and build back better.?
