Holy Cow!

I feel like today is one of the best emails that I have got to write this year, other than the birth of my grandson of course. The restrictions on halibut have officially been lifted. In the past, you could limit out twice per season with one halibut under 28" and one of any size.

Now you are allowed to catch 2 fish per day with one under 32" and one of any size, but there is no annual limit. This means that you can go fishing for halibut as many times per year as you want.

You can feed your family all year on halibut now! Give me a call and let''s talk fishing!

Summer Recap

Hello from the Jacksons at Northwind Aviation! We had a fantastic summer filled with incredible adventures! Bear viewing trips to Brooks Falls and McNeil River were popular along with hiking Augustine volcano and the Tutka Backdoor Trail. We loved helping your Alaskan dream vacations come true, and we enjoyed getting to know many of you personally!

Bear Viewing

Bear viewing in Alaska''s beautiful McNeil River Game Sanctuary or in Katmai National Park at Brooks Falls was the highlight for many of our guests this summer! Once on the ground, watching coastal brown bears catch Alaskan salmon takes your breath away. Furthermore, the scenic flight to these locations features stunning volcanoes, glaciers, rivers, and mountains on all sides!

Tutka Bay Backdoor Trail Hike

Avid hiker Larissa A. and friends, Julie, Dan, Steve, Kristie, Chris, and Trevor wanted to hike the new Tutka Backdoor Trail and chose Northwind as their means of transportation! Beginning in Taylor Bay, they hiked the 21-mile scenic and rugged trail back to Tutka Bay where we offered a water taxi service back to Homer. Jokingly, Larissa commented following the hike, "We were plagued with blue skies and sunshine and no bugs or rain!"

This hike became quite popular among our guests and kept us busy much of the summer. (Click pictures above for more hiking information)

Fly-out Fishing Trips

We also partnered with Destination Alaska Charters to provide long-range, fishing trips and glacier tours! Flying guests to or from the boat provided more time to fish and a beautiful aerial tour as well. Combining the floatplane with Destination Alaska''s state-of-the-art vessel created incredible fishing trips in some of Alaska''s most stunning remote locations! Alaska Is Waiting For You

Hello,

Right now, it is starting to feel like spring in Kachemak Bay. The snow is melting and we are looking forward to the emergence of fiddlehead ferns, spruce tips and nettles in the boreal forest. The low tides a couple weeks ago revealed that a diversity of intertidal animals have started to lay eggs and deposit egg cases! We hope you too are finding healthy, responsible ways to enjoy nature.

As we look towards summer, the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies team wanted to reach out and let you know how we are responding to the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic will have on our season.

At this time, we are still planning to host natural history tours, yurt stays, and camps at our Peterson Bay Field Station. We are closely monitoring updates from local and national health authorities regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). CACS is fully committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all visitors, as well as our staff and the communities we work within.

We will continue to update you as the situation unfolds. First and foremost in our planning is the health and safety of our employees, volunteers, and the young people, families, and adults that we work with. We also must contend with the financial challenges that cancellation of programs will cause for our organization.

As you plan for your summer in these uncertain times, you may be wondering about our cancellation policy. Cancellations for a Peterson Bay Tour made prior to one week in advance of your booking will receive a full refund less a $50 processing fee. Cancellations made within one week of a booked tour will not be refunded.

If you do need to cancel your reservation, we encourage you to consider other ways you can help to support the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. If you are financially able, you can donate some or all of the program fees rather than have them refunded. Since we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit, any donation is tax deductible and we will provide a donation receipt! You can also choose to have your refund be transferred to a gift card, which you can use for a tour in a future year or for the purchase of promotional items from our online store: https://www.akcoastalstudies.org/online-store-support-our-organization.html

New Halibut Regulations!

Due to COVID-19, the Halibut Regulations for the 2020 season are in the process of being adjusted. An official date has not been released, but these changes are expected to go into effect mid-June. We will keep you all up to date!

The changes are as follows:

2 Halibut Per Day, Per Person
- 1 of those Halibut can be any size
- 1 of those Halibut has to be under 32 Inches (up from 26 inches)
No Annual Limit (Up from 4 charter halibut/year)
Fishing open 7 days a week (gained all Tuesdays and Wednesdays back!)

Welcome to Soldotna B&B Trophy Lodge!

The sandhill cranes colts are venturing out of the nests and birdsongs fill the air. We hope you too are finding healthy, responsible ways to enjoy nature.

This summer, the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies team wants to reach out and let you know how we are responding to the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic will have on our season.

Kenai River Fishing!
If this gif doesn''t get you excited to fish the Kenai, nothing will.

We are all waiting to see what the regulations will be for the coming season. The charter fleet is asking the Alaska Department of Game and Fish to lift Halibut restrictions due to the shorter season and the regulations from the government. This means you get to catch more fish! The season is looking better everyday, and is probably going to be the best year for an Alaskan vacation.

Great news! We are extending our season into September, which means that we have a whole month of additional availability! From the weather to the halibut fishing, everything is amazing in September. The Silver Salmon are in the river, and there is nothing better than throwing a chrome colored spinner and latching on to a 15 pound fighting machine. The Rainbow fishing is also at its best. It is not uncommon to catch a 25 pound monster!

You can book this trip with no money down until July 1st. We can use all the help we can get in Alaska, so don''t be afraid to book your trip of a lifetime. I promise, we will put in 150% of our time to make your experience a trip you will remember forever.

Did you know that the largest King Salmon ever caught weighed 97.25 lbs! You can read the story here. It took them 7 hours to get off the river and get it weighed.

We haven''t seen any that big in a very long time but you still hear about 80 pounders. Experts speculate that the record could still be broken. You never know, maybe you could break that record someday.

Summer Recap

Hello from the Jacksons at Northwind Aviation! We had a fantastic summer filled with incredible adventures! Bear viewing trips to Brooks Falls and McNeil River were popular along with hiking Augustine volcano and the Tutka Backdoor Trail. We loved helping your Alaskan dream vacations come true, and we enjoyed getting to know many of you personally!

Bear Viewing

Bear viewing in Alaska''s beautiful McNeil River Game Sanctuary or in Katmai National Park at Brooks Falls was the highlight for many of our guests this summer! Once on the ground, watching coastal brown bears catch Alaskan salmon takes your breath away. Furthermore, the scenic flight to these locations features stunning volcanoes, glaciers, rivers, and mountains on all sides!

Tutka Bay Backdoor Trail Hike

Avid hiker Larissa A. and friends, Julie, Dan, Steve, Kristie, Chris, and Trevor wanted to hike the new Tutka Backdoor Trail and chose Northwind as their means of transportation! Beginning in Taylor Bay, they hiked the 21-mile scenic and rugged trail back to Tutka Bay where we offered a water taxi service back to Homer. Jokingly, Larissa commented following the hike, "We were plagued with blue skies and sunshine and no bugs or rain!"

This hike became quite popular among our guests and kept us busy much of the summer. (Click pictures above for more hiking information)

Fly-out Fishing Trips

We also partnered with Destination Alaska Charters to provide long-range, fishing trips and glacier tours! Flying guests to or from the boat provided more time to fish and a beautiful aerial tour as well. Combining the floatplane with Destination Alaska''s state-of-the-art vessel created incredible fishing trips in some of Alaska''s most stunning remote locations! Watershed Mini-Expeditions

Saturday & Sunday, October 3 & 4

Friday - Sunday, October 16 - 18

Through the Watershed Mini-Expedition is a 3-weekend series for 7th-10th grade students. During this Mini-Expedition, we''ll explore the lands and waters of Kachemak Bay and learn about the science, policy, and cultural approaches to stewardship of this place.

Our first expedition took place last weekend at Inspiration Ridge. Thanks to everyone who joined us! Join us this weekend for two days and one night camping at Swift Creek near the head of Kachemak Bay (October 3-4) and then three days and two nights at the Peterson Bay Field Station (October 16-18).

Fun, engaging, outdoor-focused curriculum includes guest speakers, water quality monitoring, visit to a homestead cabin, stewardship capstone project, tidepooling, beach clean up, and a chance to explore our watershed from the headwaters to the Bay! (For homeschoolers, activities are aligned to Next Generation Science Standards, AK History Standards, and AK Government/Citizenship Standards.)

We want to make this opportunity for in-person, outdoor learning available for all 7th-10th graders who would like to participate in the expedition. Full and partial scholarships are available! CoastWalk Beach Cleanups

Every year for the past 37 years, CoastWalk has served as a snapshot on the state of the Bay. It is our chance to come together and document changes, track life, see our impact, and clean the Bay in as many spots as we can. CoastWalk helps keep Kachemak Bay clean, sheds light on our environment, and provides us with critical information to help us protect and serve the place we love. We can all play a part in this effort and everyone is invited to join Coastal Studies to clean, learn about, and monitor Kachemak Bay.

Homer Spit Cleanup

Saturday, October 3, 9am-noon

Jutting over 4 miles into the center of Kachemak Bay, the Homer Spit is iconic and offers so much to our community. Whether fishing off of Land’s End, shopping at all of the stores, walking the beaches, or taking a boat out of the harbor, we all benefit from the Homer Spit. Join us as we clean and collect data on what we find in the highly utilized area between the end of the spit and the fishing lagoon.

Anchor Point Beach Cleanup

Saturday, October 10th, 10am-1pm

Have you ever caught a salmon out of the Anchor River, or watched the sun set behind volcanoes from the Anchor Point beach? The Anchor Point Beach and the river that flows into it offer so much to the residents of Kachemak Bay, as well as visitors.

Join us and take part in paying back this area for all it provides, while gathering information that looks at our impact on this ecologically significant site.

Eco Kids

Come explore with us. Eco-Kids kicks off next week, the first week of October!

An after school, nature-based program for 1st-3rd grade students.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:00-4:30 pm, beginning October 5th and continuing through December 15th

Cost is $20 per session or $180 for 10 sessions (book nine sessions, get one free!).

Need-based scholarships are available. Call 235-6667 for more information.

Limited transportation from school may be available if needed. Call 907-235-6714.

New Halibut Regulations!

Due to COVID-19, the Halibut Regulations for the 2020 season are in the process of being adjusted. An official date has not been released, but these changes are expected to go into effect mid-June. We will keep you all up to date!

The changes are as follows:

2 Halibut Per Day, Per Person
- 1 of those Halibut can be any size
- 1 of those Halibut has to be under 32 Inches (up from 26 inches)
No Annual Limit (Up from 4 charter halibut/year)
Fishing open 7 days a week (gained all Tuesdays and Wednesdays back!)

I was sitting by the Kenai the other night thinking about fishing. As this may not come as a surprise to you, I had arrived at an interesting conclusion that I thought I would share.

Fishing isn''t easy and it can be difficult to jump into without any training. To this day, I will sometimes go out knowing exactly what the fish will go after and they still wont bite. It takes patience, understanding, trust, and just a dash of humility.

Imagine how much better the world could be if we lived just a little bit more like we fished.

At Alaskan Fishing Adventures, our river fishing experiences are second to none. We seek out and hire the best Alaska fishing guides available and then we set them loose on the spectacular local salmon runs on the Kasilof and Kenai Rivers. The results are epic trips full of hard fighting fish. In addition to salmon, we also offer amazing rainbow trout trips.

KASILOF RIVER KINGS

Slate gray in color, the Kasilof River is fed from a huge glacier. The average depth of the river is less than four feet, dictating the use of drift boats.

Our drift boats accommodate 2, 3, or 4 anglers, and your guide will row you down the river and fish selected areas as the Salmon enter the river twice each day on the flood tides. Your float trip will take you through the middle of the Kenai National Moose Range, a very scenic area that abounds in wildlife. Moose, Beaver, Loons, and Eagles are daily participants involved in your trip here.

The Kings will average about 20-25 lbs. on the Kasilof, with occasional fish in the 40-50 lb. range. Because your boat will be propelled only by your guide rowing the boat, you in most cases will not be able to chase your fish. This creates great excitement as you try to battle your king and force him back up-river.

Your gear consists of medium to heavy graphite rod, usually in the 8-8 1/2 foot range, with a level wind reel filled with 175 yards of 25-pound test. The tackle varies, but typically large quick fish with a sardine wrap or an egg-cluster with a spin-n-glow are standard. Each guide has his own secrets and formulas, and half of the fun is trying to get the recipe from him.

KENAI RIVER SALMON FISHING

The Kenai River stands along for trophy class King Salmon.

Home to the all-time sport caught world record King Salmon, the Kenai River stands alone for trophy class King Salmon. The ten (10) largest sport caught King Salmon of all time have come from this beautiful glacier-fed waterway. There is nowhere else in Alaska or the entire world where you have the chance at catching such large trophy size King Salmon.

The genetics of this strain of King Salmon is unmatched in the entire world. This truly is a trophy fishery, and as such you fish here not for the quality of hookups or action, but rather for the chance of a lifetime. For it is here on the mighty Kenai River that the next world record will be produced. It is here that you can catch the largest Salmon of your life!

POWER PACKED ALASKA SOCKEYE SALMON FISHING

Sometimes called Red Salmon, this fish is prized for its great eating flavor and explosive fighting ability, is the most abundant of all the Salmon species in our area.

Like king salmon, the levels of Omega-3s in sockeye give it a succulent texture and rich flavor. It is also high in Vitamin D. You'll remember the challenge of this Alaska sport fishing experience with every bite of the sockeye salmon you take home.

FRESHWATER SILVER SALMON FISHING

Cohos move into our freshwater fisheries at the end of July.

The Kasilof River fishing is all done from drift-boats and the Kenai River fishing is from power boats. On these fresh-water fisheries best success is attained using Salmon-egg clusters which are back-bounced or drifted. Casting spinners and spoons in the backwaters can be very effective as well as plug fishing the faster water.

The Kenai River was originally famous for its Trophy-Class Rainbow Trout fishing, long before it became popular for the terrific Salmon fishing found here. This outstanding Rainbow and Dolly Varden Trout fishery continue today, with native trout over 15 pounds landed every year.

The fourth of July this year was definitely one to remember at the lodge. We had some of my favorite guests from Base Camp 40. They are a non profit organization that gets veterans out into the wild. We donate a trip every year to these guys and they are always a blast to have.

This year they brought country singer Scott Brown from the Scooter Brown Band with them. After a day of fishing, we spent the evening around the fire while Scott played for the lodge. Keep an eye on our social media pages for some of the entertainment.

I can''t tell you how much fun these guys are. Not only are they a hoot to have at the lodge, but they also represent some of the core values that we hold dear. They give so much back to the veteran community and we couldn''t be more happy to support them.

The best halibut fishing in Alaska means steady action for halibut in the 50-80 pound range, with Alaska giants over 100 pounds brought to the scales every day. We do encourage catch-n-release on fish over 150 pounds and have engaged in an Alaska Halibut tagging program.

KENAI KINGS ARE THE WORLD''S LARGEST

Angler Fred Houtman landed the ninth largest King Salmon in the IGFA Record Book at the time, a whopping 89 lbs, 4 ounces, as a guest of our Trophy Lodge!!

We fish Alaska's top locations for these brutes. Our crews have landed numerous State of Alaska Trophy Ling Cod Record. We occasionally catch lings on our day trips, but the most successful ling cod fishing is on our long-range overnight charters.

BEAUTIFUL AND VARIED ROCKFISH AND YELLOW EYE

This is an incredibly diverse group of fish. In fact, our captains keep a chart of rockfish species on the boat to help you identify these saltwater beauties. Rockfish range in color from blacks and dull gray to stunningly vibrant oranges and reds. They are fun to catch, can be excellent to eat.

The most acrobatic of all Pacific Salmon, the Silver, or Coho Salmon enter the waters in our area in early July. Our first Silver Salmon are caught in the waters outside of Resurrection Bay. This is a terrific salt-water fishery with a grand backdrop of the Kenai Fjords, glaciers, towering mountains, and unlimited marine wildlife.

FLY-OUTS: SILVER SALMON, SOCKEYE SALMON, & BEAR VIEWING TRIPS

We offer daily fly-out trips for salmon starting in early June through the end of August. Your scenic 20-25 minute air flight takes you across the Cook Inlet to a variety of possible final destinations where you'll disembark the plane and get into 4 passenger power boats. Your guide then takes you on a scenic boat ride to your fishing destination where thousands of salmon gather to go up the creek and then spawn. This area also happens to be the perfect location for bear viewing. Brown bears and black bears gather at the creek-head to catch and feast on salmon to fatten up for a long winter's hibernation. After fishing, your guide will motor back to the awaiting plane for a scenic flight over the glacier and then back home.

LONG RANGE OVERNIGHT ALASKA FISHING CHARTERS

We schedule these exclusive Long Range Trips for the longest days of the Alaskan summer. Stay up all night and experience the most exciting fishing in ALASKA! Besides fishing action, you will see incredible scenery and lots of wildlife. Don't forget to bring your camera! It's a trip of a lifetime!

Limited to just 12 anglers per trip, these trips allow you to catch two limits and access fishing grounds inaccessible to regular day trips. Warning, these trips are intense and are not recommended for those wanting to be pampered.
