New “Reduced” PrintP22 presents its newest print from the P22 Design Research Laboratory. The P22DRL is an archive of thousands of wood advertising blocks originally used by Pollack Printing of Buffalo NY for department store posters in the mid 20th Century. This print by Richard Kegler features an arrangement of 8 different circular wood blocks arranged concentrically and printed in yellow, cyan, magenta, hunter, blue, orange, red, and gold. Using the blocks unaltered from their original state, they become studies in pure color with Pop Art overtones.

P22 Type Foundry Embarks on Twenty-Fifth Year in Historic Rochester BuildingTalman Building Former Home to Frederick Douglass’s North StarWe're happy to embark on our twenty-fifth year by returning a traditional printing presence to the historic Talman Building on East Main Street in our new home city of Rochester, New York. The Talman Building is famous for being the headquarters of Frederick Douglass and his North Star newspaper, as well as for hosting other printers throughout the nineteenth century. In addition to being a working printshop for posters, prints, and limited-edition books, the studio will be used to pull proofs of historic metal and wood types as P22 continues to expand its brand of typographic archaeology. P22 will also host limited exhibitions from the P22 graphic design collections and featured work from visiting artists in their Vault Gallery, retrofitted from the steel-walled vault from bank tenants who occupied the space from the 1920s into the 2000s. P22 was founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1994 as an extension of Richard Kegler’s media study master thesis project. P22 also recently added two partners, James Grieshaber of Typeco and Patrick Griffin of Canada Type, to offer custom type designs and to expand P22’s retail collection, which currently consists of over one thousand type designs. Additionally, new prints, books, and supplies for letterpress printers are produced for sale. The new studio in Rochester brings together the past twenty-five years of P22’s typographic research and design into one central location. Visitors welcome by appointment. ![]() |

Chromatic Ornate Type SpecimenThis wood type letterpress print has been produced as a specimen of the new wood type version of Chromatic Ornate made by Virgin Wood Type Mfg. Co. The inspiration for Virgin’s Chromatic Ornate was William H. Page’s Ornate No. 1. Page mastered wood type manufacturing in the mid- to late-1800s, and the pinnacle of his craft was published in the the Specimens of Chromatic Wood Types, Borders, Etc. in 1874. Few Page original wood type chromatics survive today and are revered for not only their rarity but for their beauty as well. This seven color specimen was hand printed by Geri McCormick and James Grieshaber on a Vandercook Universal 3 at the Flower City Arts Center over the course of seven days. The letters are printed in cyan, magenta, yellow, purple, orange, and green, with the colophon in grey. This is an 80lb cover print, measures 13” x 19”, in an edition of 110, signed and numbered.

Reintroducing the NEW P22 Type Gauge Multi-ToolP22 is happy to present our Type Gauge Multi-Tool. This new version is similar to our previous laser-cut, fluorescent-orange, acrylic tool, with a few improvements and now cut from 1mm thick stainless steel. "Necessity is the mother of invention." While we didn't invent anything brand new, we did seek out a solution to a print-shop need, and we are happy to bring you this essential tool for letterpress printers. We wanted a quick and easy type gauge to sort metal type and spacing in our studio. There are a couple gauges available, but this is not a common tool in most print shops. We looked at the various styles and decided to pare ours down to basic measurements and even add a few extra features not found in other gauges. One side has notched gaps to precisely identify and measure type and spacing. The other edge is a Pica scale marked in 6 and 12 point increments. At the bottom we included a Type High gauge, and it can even be used to pry open ink cans! To get this essential stocking stuffer for that letterpress printer on your list, please order by 12/20/19 to ensure delivery by 12/23/19. ![]() P22 Holiday Specimen PackOver $100 Retail Value for Only $29.95This is the perfect gift for that typographic someone on your holiday shopping list. New HWT Bernice Chapbook #11 For Free...With the purchase of the HWT Bernice fontP22 Type Foundry has released quite few wood type revivals and new designs inspired by historic wood type in conjunction with the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum over the past 8 years, and even more are coming this year. One of the Hamilton Wood Type Collection (HWT) designs that may have slipped by many people is the Bernice ornament system created by designer, typographer, and artist Marian Bantjes. These ornaments exemplify the complex intricate systems that define Bantjes' work. While she designed the ornaments to be manufactured in wood on an Hamilton’s arcane and rare border stamping machine, the digital version is accessible to anyone. Because of the apparent complexity of the system, we have put together this little booklet that shows some basic methods for assembling complex patterns with just a few keystrokes. This 32 page booklet is a step-by-step visual guide that begins to show you what you can be done with these ornaments. Our chapbooks are simple one color booklets, so the cover was a chance for us to illustrate what can be done with Bernice in multiple colors with transparency. We letterpress printed the pattern we chose in red and blue inks, where the overlap creates purple, on top of the Mohawk Via sunflower yellow paper, hand-printed in our P22 print studio. This booklet is #11 in the P22 chapbook series and like all of the others, is limited to 1500 copies. As a special introductory offer: a free copy of the booklet will be mailed to you with the purchase of the HWT Bernice ornament font from the P22 website. Free booklet offer good until January 31, 2020. The Bernice chapbook is also available for sale if you already have the font, or if you just want to complete your run of P22 Chapbooks.

Savage Impressions BookLast week to order at pre-sale price.Delivery in February 2020. The long-awaited book, Savage Impressions: An Aesthetic Expedition Through the Archives of Independent Project Records & Press, is only weeks away from shipping. The advance copies arrived and we are quite pleased with the results. This 240 page book started as a Kickstarter campaign and was designed and developed upon the successful conclusion of that campaign. Like all good things, it took a bit longer to assemble and print than we ever anticipated. We have held the pre-order price as long as we could, but now having done all the accounting, we are coming to grips with the reality that we have to raise the price and we will not be wholesaling the book or selling on Amazon. The price will go up to the posted retail prices** for both regular and deluxe versions as of January 28, 2020. We will honor the pre sale price until then, so if you were thinking about picking up a copy, now is the best time to order. The books will be shipping in early February and due to the large number of pre-orders and logistics of assembling the deluxe version, the shipments will take a little bit of time to get out the door. If you have already ordered from way back when, thank you for your patience. You will have your copy very soon! ![]() ** The original plan had the book at 150 pages, with the deluxe to have two letterpress components, and a 10” record with 6 songs. Over the course of creating the book, it grew to 240 pages, with the deluxe to include four letterpress pieces, and a metallic gold 12” record with 13 songs. For those who like math stats, that’s a 60% increase in page count, a 20% increase in vinyl record, with a 100+% increase in audio content, and 100% increase in hand-printed letterpress content. Of course this all took more time from the design and production team. And the last kicker was an unpredictable tariff. So rather than pass the higher expenses onto you, we are sticking to our posted prices, and you have one week to be among the lucky ones who will pay less than everyone in the future.

P22 Records Re-releases First 7" SingleGirlpope’s I was a Teenage JesusIn 1994, P22 existed as a catch-all moniker for various art projects. Inspired primarily by Emigre Magazine/Type Foundry/Music, we felt we could do it all! P22 Records first vinyl record release was a power-pop ditty by the band Girlpope. This record and its many variations were directly inspired by Bruce Licher and Independent Project Records. The Super Deluxe Limited Edition version of this 7" single, show here, is pressed on Burgundy wine colored vinyl, the nailed to a board, wrapped in velum with letterpress printing, in a numbered edition of one hundred. See the other versions on our site. Alas, despite releasing 18 records, the label quietly went into hibernation. P22 has remained focused on digital and analog type and related by-products but the label has returned as a component in the deluxe version of the new Bruce Licher Monograph Savage Impressions. Although the deluxe version of the book is now sold out, P22 Records will be offering a stand-alone version of the record Tape Excavation (P22-019) in the coming weeks. In anticipation of that release, we re-present our first vinyl release.

Cooper Coiffure aka The Girl with the Cooper Black HairA Wood Block Print with a CauseCooper Coiffure is a new print created at the P22 Studios by printer/printing historian Amelia Hugill-Fontanel on the Vandercook Universal III. The blocks are from the Pollack Printing Collection housed at P22, and feature the impressive 840-point Cooper Black wood type! The composition evokes Futurist advertising posters and early experimental modernist poster designs. This limited edition print is 18.5" ? 28", uses 5 ink colors, on Mohawk Renewal Wheat 120 lb. cover paper, and is signed and numbered. Check out more images and information on the process of the making of this print on Behance. The printmaker is donating proceeds to GirlTrek, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the health and healing of black women and girls. In their own words: "In the footsteps of a civil rights legacy, GirlTrek is a national health movement that activates thousands of Black women to be change makers in their lives and communities-through walking." They are the sponsors of a recent 21-day challenge podcast called Black History Bootcamp which motivates anyone to walk while learning about dynamic Black figures in history.

The Savage Impression book has been getting favorable reviews from the music and the printing/graphic design world alike. We went all-in on this publication and are quite pleased with the results. The deluxe edition sold out quickly, but due to popular demand, we are making a few copies of the Deluxe from our strategic reserves available for sale. We have the Un-numbered Deluxe Edition (identical to the numbered editions with the gold vinyl LP and the letterpress tip-ins) and a Faux Deluxe Edition (standard edition book with the black vinyl LP, bundled with the deluxe letterpress wrapper) available now.

We are happy to present this essential tool for letterpress printers. We wanted a quick and easy type gauge to sort metal type and spacing in our studio. At the bottom we included a Type High gauge, and it can even be used to pry open ink cans! Get yours now!

A: An Amperstack!Eight Layers of Letterpress Ampersand GoodnessFor this print Richard Kegler uses a collection of vintage wood type ampersands to create a layered stacking of eight ampersands in eight colors: white, black, gold, silver, grey, white, black, gold. Each layer has textural or visual interaction with the preceding layer that define the outlines of each glyph. The largest ampersand is 12" tall from the Pollock Collection of advertising wood blocks, and the smallest is 16 point from the metal version of Jim Rimmer''s Stern font. The ampersand is the one typographic character that has its own unique place-as a word that is also a glyph-and really has no other use other than signifying 'and'. It is the character that has a special place as a graphic element that makes a bold statement in its simple beauty. These twin editions feature the same printing on vastly different backgrounds for a striking effect that draws the eye into the center and a meditative appreciation of the Ampersand. Each print is 12" x 18", eight times through the press, signed and numbered, in a limited edition of only 25 of each. Choose from the Brown or White Edition.

The Future Has Been Cancelled... Second Edition/Variation Print
Designed and printed by Richard Kegler, this print is an unusual size 28" x 10" and is printed on chipboard. The "illustration" of a silhouette of a dormant factory is actually a sideways F trapezoid outline block. The metallic gold ink is printed over black and the wood type text is printed silver over gold. This second edition/variation of this print has the artwork on the right and the type flush-left on the left side. This second edition is limited to 35. Since each background is slightly different, you can specify if you prefer the primarily Black/Grey background or the backgrounds that have Red/Gold mixed with black.

Something BigA Timely Wood Block Letterpress PrintCo-designed and printed by Amelia Hugill-Fontanel and Richard Kegler, this print is 12"x 18" and was executed on March 11 in the midst of uncertain and mysterious utterances from US Leadership on the brink of admitting that "something big" was going on. The silhouette block was originally intended for some fantastic variety store sales event, but conjures up more of invasion of the bodysnatchers vibe. Each print background is layering of an ink cleaning sheet on top of a makeready proof (overprinting from previous editions), so each one is a bit different. We are still considering this an edition of 25, signed and numbered. . Limited edition of only 25

White Album Trio of PrintsThe White Album trio of letterpress prints was created by Richard Kegler at the P22 studio on the Vandercook Universal III press during the lockdowns and uncertainty of the 2020 pandemic. All three prints are inspired by songs found on side four of the Beatles White Album (released November 22,1968). Each is hand-printed, initialed, and numbered in a limited edition of 100 copies. The song Revolution #1 is a more laid back version of the song featured on the B-side of Hey Jude. In this version Lennon states that in regard to talking about destruction, you can count him 'out', followed by the word 'in'. This print presents both options and is styled after classic wood type protest posters. Using vintage wood type, the color scheme evokes a late 1960s sensibility rather than a stark black and red that might be used with this type of design. The song Savoy Truffle by George Harrison features lyrics extracted from a box of chocolates from the Mackintosh company. The original design of the Good News assortment box features styled chocolates with their names underneath. This print was made by redrawing each of the chocolates having the wood blocks laser-cut for relief printing. The test was set in 10pt Venus Extended Medium type along with 48pt Bulmer Italic. A solid tint block in the background was printed from a type-high wood block. The print takes this piece of 1960s advertising and presents it as an art print suitable for framing. The #9 print features four layers of off-white ink as well as a blind deboss and silver crash numbering on glass white cover stock. The full effect is difficult to capture in a photograph. A quick look might see vague typographic forms on a mostly white field. The idea was to use snippets of "lyrics" found in this most challenging of all Beatles songs for a visually challenging print that evokes the White Album's minimal cover design but one that has been well used and perhaps found in a second-hand shop. The print is editioned with a numbering machine on a platen press using silver ink as were the original copies of the White Album. Get Any one or all 3 of theses limited edition letterpress prints.

Metal Type Goudy Cloister Initials Are Back in StockAvailable in a Very Limited SupplyGoudy Cloister Initials are being made available for a very limited offering as sets of 60-point and 72-point metal type, each containing the letters A-Z plus 2 tint blocks. Cloister Initials were originally designed by Frederic Goudy and released through American Type Founders in 1917 in sizes from 36-144 point. They were later offered by Lanston Monotype when Goudy became the Typographic Director of the company. This type is cast by Gregory Walters in Piqua, Ohio on a Monotype Giantcaster with Lanston Monotype mats. Mr. Walters owns some of the only machines capable of casting matrices this size. Included with your order of the physical type is a digital font called LTC Goudy Initials. Tape Excavation Limited Edition LPP22 Releases Copies of the Bruce Licher LPThis limited edition vinyl LP was created to accompany the deluxe edition of the Savage Impressions book published by P22 in February 2020. Tape Excavation was compiled by Bruce Licher in early 2019 after scouring through dozens of boxes of cassette tapes from rehearsals, demos, and other recordings to find previously unheard nuggets from his various musical endeavors. Dating from his first recordings for Independent Project Records in 1980 to a rehearsal demo of his current musical endeavor SR2, a collaboration with his wife Karen Nielsen Licher, this compilation contains 14 intriguing windows into the ongoing evolution of Licher's sound and musical vision. This record is an audio parallel to the book. Tape Excavation is a joint release between P22 Records and Independent Project Records (IP073/P22-019). The LP comes in a die-cut, folded sleeve that has been letterpress-printed by Bruce Licher in black and metallic inks. The deluxe edition of the book and its gold vinyl companion LP are now sold out, however an additional 200 numbered copies of the LP on black vinyl with a different colorway (silver and black) album jacket were made as a stand alone-release. P22 has a run of 50 of these available for sale. The Savage Impressions book release events![]() To celebrate this long-awaited event, there will be two book release parties on Saturday March 7th, 2020: The first will be held at P22 HQ in Rochester, NY from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM EST where the Savage Impressions book will be available for viewing and sale. In addition, a special exhibition of Independent Project Records & Press will be featured in the P22 Vault Gallery. Attendees of this event will be able to view Bruce Licher's actual letterpress printed works in our Vault Gallery, as well as receive a letterpress keepsake. There will be a pop-up shop where you can purchase the Savage Impressions book, accompanying vinyl LP, and there will be some exclusive surprises for sale (for attendees only, while supplies last). On the same day, on the opposite coast, in Culver City, CA at Arcana: Books on the Arts, there will be a book signing, exhibition, and musical performance with Bruce Licher and Karen Nielsen Licher of Independent Project Records & Press from 4:00 to 6:00 PM PST. P22 Stamp BookletSpecial Unissued 25th Anniversary Commemorative Stamp SetStudio artist James Grieshaber decided to make a commemorative stamp sheet that celebrated the various locations where P22 did business over the years. P22 just happened to have a stock of their logo cast in lead. The rest of the artwork was created from metal type, ornaments, and found cuts from the collection at the Wells College Book Arts Center. Linoleum blocks were then cut to create clouds over the buildings to tie them all together. The 3-color dry-gum stamp sheets were are finished on a Rosback perforator to give it that classic stamp look and feel. The sheet is staple stitched into a 7.25" x 5.5" cover, printed silver on black French paper. And it all comes is a protective Glassine sleeve-as stamps should. The are a limited supply, so get them while they last.

All Fonts in the IHOF Collection 50% OffThe P22 sub-foundry: International House of Fonts was formulated in the early days of P22 as an "online-only" type boutique. This was because at the time all P22 fonts were all packaged with floppy disks, and later CD-ROMs. These days, all P22 fonts are available for download and it is hard to say why one font is P22 and one is IHOF. In the spirit of celebrating the last 20 years of IHOF, we are offering 50% off all IHOF fonts. Now is your chance to stock up on those unique P22/IHOF fonts from designers from around the globe. This offer is good until September 1, 2020.

Introducing the P22 R'blox CubeFun For Puzzlers and Typographic Aficionados AlikeDespite a passing resemblance to another puzzle cube, the R'blox Cube presents multiple solutions, by letting you create every letter in the Latin, Greek, and basic Cyrillic alphabets. This glyph-creation puzzle uses the curves and lines of the P22 Blox modular letterpress-printing system as it basis. Ideal for any geometric or puzzle minded person to experiment with the myriad combinations achievable of not only alphabetic shapes, but to discover the happy accidents that happen on the other five sides. Handsomely presented in a familiar toy design, this limited-edition offering comes with basic instructions that make it an enjoyable distraction for anyone. Equally pragmatic as a puzzler gift for creative thinkers and typographic aficionados or a means to experiment with the P22 Blox combinations. The R'blox Cube is available exclusively through P22 Type Foundry at the special introductory price of $9.95 (Regular $14.95) while supplies last.

P22 Type Foundry is pleased to present TuscaloosaA new font release from Ted StauntonP22 Tuscaloosa is a hybrid script that includes Tuscan (bifurcated) serif treatments. The design of Tuscaloosa began as a set of organically-formed initials, the Tuscan serifs being reminiscent of shoots and leaves bursting forth. Tuscaloosa also derives inspiration from the late Victorian era, when the development of newspaper and poster advertising led to extremes of weight in the main strokes. The font is intended to convey an aura of excitement and fun that characterized those times! ![]() The name ''Tuscaloosa'' was chosen because of the appropriate combination of ''Tuscan'' and ''looseness,'' and because of its essentially American character. As a special introductory offer, you can get the new P22 Tuscaloosa font for 50% off the retail price of $29.95. Offer good until April 30, 2020.
