Hall & Woodhouse (H&W) exists to make people’s day and enrich our communities from generation to generation.

Despite our pubs being closed during these unprecedented times, we’ve been busy helping out wherever we can. Here’s a round-up of what we’ve been up to.

Donating 243 Free Meals to NHS Staff
over Easter Weekend

Our teams at the Olive Branch in Wimborne and the Duchess of Cornwall in Poundbury, cooked 243 hot meals between them for NHS staff working over the Easter weekend.

The hot meals, including some of our signature pub dishes like Steak and Tanglefoot pies with mash, roast lamb with all the trimmings and nut roasts, were then delivered to five local hospitals across Dorset.

Helping Isolated Families in Wessex

Our pubs The Old Granary in Wareham and The St. Peter’s Finger in Lytchett Minster also recently donated a large amount of fresh and long-life food products to Autism Wessex.

Amy Steele, General Manager of The Old Granary, explained:
“We were thrilled to have helped Autism Wessex at this incredibly difficult time. Some of the donated food went to the charity’s care home Manor Road, its students at Portfield School, as well as people in the community who have been impacted by the Coronavirus lockdown.”

Running the World’s Longest Marathon Quiz

Over VE Day weekend, The Portsmouth Arms in Hatch Warren broke the world record for the world’s longest marathon as a quiz master.

Richard Curtis, General Manager of the Portsmouth Arms, hosted the 36-hour virtual quiz, which raised £21,000 for The Pink Place Cancer Charity in Basingstoke, with followers of the pub’s quizzes voting for the chosen charity on Facebook.

Richard has hosted daily virtual quizzes since the Government-enforced lockdown began and in addition to the money above has raised a further £17,500 for many local charities including St. Michael’s Hospice, Basingstoke Foodbank and Hampshire Medical Fund.

Spreading Community Spirit with Rio Soft Drink Donation

Whilst our pubs have been closed our Blandford Brewery has never been busier and H&W has donated more than 13,500 bottles of its Rio Tropical Light soft drink (yes Rio is one of our brands) to NHS staff, other key workers and foodbanks across the south.

Anthony Woodhouse explained:
“During this difficult time, our team members have nominated charities and causes close to their hearts, which they believe deserve a donation of Rio soft drink. We are committed to living and breathing our company’s purpose of making people’s day and serving our communities even though circumstances are tough.”

We’re hopeful to be opening our pubs again soon, but in the meantime please stay safe!

Dear Valued Guest
Over the past few months, despite our pubs being closed and not having you visit, we’ve been doing our best to deliver on our purpose of making people’s days and enriching our communities. This includes reviewing your feedback from our survey on what changes you’d like to see when we do finally reopen.

Encouraging news is that the Government is working on plans for pubs and restaurants to reopen from 4th July.

At H&W, your safety and enjoyment are our main priorities and as such, pending the Government confirming exact dates and procedures, we will be reopening our pubs in a phased approach from Tuesday 7th July through to the end of the month. This is to ensure the very highest levels of hospitality can be consistently delivered, as they were before the pandemic started.

When you return, you’ll notice we’ve made some changes to keep you safe:

- Phone or online bookings will be required for all visits
- Bar and restaurant tables will be appropriately distanced
- We’ll be operating table service only
- Our menu will be a little shorter than normal to allow for appropriate social distancing in our kitchens
- You’ll be able to order & pay on your phone
- We won’t be taking cash for a while
- They’ll be plenty of hand sanitisers available for you to use
- We’ll have separate entrances & exits to maintain social distancing

As you can imagine after such a long period of closure, we need to get things just right for you, so please keep an eye on our individual pub websites for further details of when each pub will be reopening its doors.

If you haven’t already signed up to your favourite H&W pub, please do so by updating your preferences at the end of this email, so you’ll be one of the first to hear about our reopening dates and all of the other exciting news over the summer & autumn months.

In our long history we have faced many challenges (including World Wars), but we have always kept our doors open. Respectfully, following the Government’s instruction on the 20th March 2020, we have temporarily closed our pub doors to protect our guests and our team from the risk of spreading COVID-19.

As a business, we are now focussing on the immediate future and how we can continue to make people’s day and enrich our communities in new ways during the temporary closure of our pubs. We will also ensure that we are well prepared to re-open when it is right to do so.
