Dear groupmuser, We're here with a wonderful piece of news. Supporter, board member, and Groupmuse superhero Adam Lasnik has agreed to match up to $5k raised this week. If you've been waiting for a high-impact opportunity to support the Groupmuse Foundation, now's the moment! Adam's contribution will be matched 100% by his employer in turn* - so your support will actually be tripled if you contribute this week! And if you, like Adam, work in tech or are tech-inclined, we're having a conversation this Friday at 12pm PT/3pm ET that might interest you. It's a Zoom chat with Groupmuse founders Sam and Kyle and the rest of the team - about the technology that runs Groupmuse, and, more importantly, about how we think about and approach technology in running Groupmuse. Groupmuse is a social network, and there's been a lively and important conversation in recent years about the effects of social networking on the human experience. At Groupmuse, we spend so much time talking about how to ensure the highest level of values-alignment and integrity in everything we build and everything we do. How can we build a robust and healthy online ecosystem that doesn't exploit, extract or exacerbate, but rather serves as a scalable force for true cultural regeneration? Multi-stakeholder cooperativism, transparency, and hybrid funding are all tools in our tool kit that we're drawing upon. We want to build a radically regenerative platform that uses technology to transform our lived realities in beautiful and abundant ways -- and we believe that your voice can help us get there. RSVP for the event here. If you're interested in the intersection of tech, music, and community building, please join us for this crucial conversation! All best, *If you work at a company that matches charitable contributions, please consider bringing in that support for the Foundation!
Let's chat. Music, tech, and community: A conversation with the Groupmuse team

Dear all, This is the last call for this evening''s Massivemuse, wherein the great virtuoso pianist Leon Livshin takes us across the eclectic soundscape of Central Europe -- as manifested by the luminaries of this beloved art-form: Brahms, Liszt, Bartok, Schubert, Chopin. The pre-concert Zoom hang starts at 7.30pm EDT, the livestream performance starts at 8pm EDT, and we''ll have a lovely Q&A with Leon after the show. Can''t wait to see you there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, Tomorrow, we're putting our spotlight on the season premier of the NEXUS 2.5 Virtual Chamber Music Festival, beamed out of one of Chicago's newest performance venues, Guarneri Hall. Guarneri Hall has a focus on leveraging cutting-edge broadcasting tech to bring chamber music into the 21st Century -- which makes them a particularly potent musical force in times of pandemic. The concert will feature three of the most brilliant young string players making music today - violinists Brian Hong and Rannveig Marta Sarc, and cellist Alex Hersh, and their program is a mix of the ancient - Viotti and Corelli - and the new - Augusta Read Thomas and Texu Kim, with Zoltan Kodaly's electrifying late-romantic ethno-folkish masterpiece, the Op. 7 Duo for Violin and Cello as the grand finale. But this evening out of Guarneri Hall is really just a new beginning for us: We're proud to announce that Guarneri and Groupmuse are partnering for the 20-'21 season and we'll be featuring a regular calendar of their broadcasts through our platform. Guarneri Hall's dedication to quality and artistry coupled with our emphasis on community and togetherness will make for a union that'll provide light and warmth in trying times. So stay tuned for what's next: we're talking string quartets, Ludwig Van, international virtuosi - the works! We're grateful to be walking this new path with Guarneri Hall and grateful that you'll be there too. See you this Saturday for our maiden voyage! best,

Dear Groupmuse Family, Out in the farthest and most remote reaches of the Pacific Ocean, there's an unimaginably vast volcanic mountain range that''s mostly underwater. The peaks - collectively known as Hawai?i - that emerge from the Great Blue, standing in the most profound isolation - a distance that makes microns out of six feet, have given our whole world the gift of Aloha. It's a message of salutation, affection, peace, compassion and mercy - but more fundamentally, it's a notion that seeks to define the force of love that holds together existence. Oh how greatly we need Aloha in these times. And, as Providence might have it, quarantined in this most isolated of places, there is a string quartet of four of the rising generation''s finest string players cooped up together with nothing but their instruments, a recording studio, and thousands of dollars'' worth of A/V equipment. And so this Saturday, naturally, we Massivemuse. With Tchaikovsky-prize winning violinist Eric Silberger on first violin, the quartet is ready with a profound statement of love from thousands of miles away. See, it turns out that the last monarch of Hawai?i - Queen Lili?uokalani - poured forth with a deluge of song from her imprisonment following the imperialist coup that forced her from power, and this string quartet has worked doggedly to honor her spirit by arranging her music for string quartet*. And so, the first half of the program is a selection of those gems from this ocean oasis, coupled with a few movements of solo Bach because: Bach. Then, for the second half, the quartet will be delivering the goods: a full Beethoven string quartet - his Op. 18/4. We weren't messing around when we said we were intent on celebrating this towering Genius in his 250th year, even if every concert hall in the world has fallen dark and silent. Like all live-stream Massivemuses, we'll start with a Zoom hang, and then head to a high-quality livestream, and then come back to Zoom for a Q&A conversation with the artists. We're charging $3 to reserve a spot, and asking folks to pay-what-you-can at the performance. Note: The event starts at 7.30pm Eastern Daylight Time. Can't wait to see you there! All best, *Read more about this group''s incredible work here.

Dear Groupmuse, Groupmuse is rallying with all our might in this new age. Since COVID began, we've organized over 150 performances, and we've earned musicians over $100,000 - all at a time when every major concert hall has closed. Over the course of these few months and many 'muses, select players have really distinguished themselves not just with the high calibre of their performing, but also with the care and quality with which they've built their tech set up to ensure an absolutely superb listening experience. And that's partly why we've been doing these Thursday Massivemuses - not just to cater to our vast West Coast community, but also to signal boost the cutting edge of our musician community. And so, this Thursday night, we've got the electrifying virtuosity of prize-winning violinist Max Tan and (also prize-winning) pianist Mackenzie Melemed, with their state-of-the-art streaming setup and three splendid masterworks for violin-piano: the endlessly melodic 1st Violin Sonata by Camille Saint-Sa?ns; 250th Birth-year Boy Beethoven's last Violin Sonata, his op. 96 in G Major; and the op. 23 Romance for Violin and Piano by Amy Beach, who was not just arguably the greatest American Romantic composer, but also one of history's great women of this entire art form. We'll start with a Zoom chat at 6 PDT, move to a Youtube stream thereafter, and meet back in the Zoom for a Q&A with the brilliant musicians. Can't wait to see you there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, Of the myriad monumental challenges musicians face in this moment*, one less talked about is the present impossibility of The Ensemble. How can artists gather in quartets, octets, orchestras when being in close quarters, sharing breath and expression has been deemed a risk to public health? And yet - some exceptions are known to our community, as some players are quarantined together. And so, to celebrate one of those happy accidents, this Saturday night, we're organizing our very first Livestream Massivemuse. (Note: This stream is beaming out of NYC, so the listed start time is 7.30pm E.S.T.). Three of NYC's finest young string players, long-time Massivemuser Brendan Speltz and his brother Brooke Speltz - violinist and cellist of the internationally renowned Escher String Quartet - and violist Milena Pajaro Van de Stadt of the equally great Dover String Quartet find themselves cooped up in an apartment together with a whole bunch of high quality audio/visual equipment. And so is born The QuaranTrio. This will be their debut. And what a debut: The program starts with Hungarian Erno Dohn?nyi's late romantic masterpiece, his Op. 10 Serenade - one of the most poignant and vivacious works ever written for string trio. It's followed by a brief contemporary work by Chris Rogerson entitled Brilena. The finale is the first of Ludwig Beethoven's op. 9 string trios, the glorious and youthful G Major. 2020 is Beethoven's 250th birth year. Orchestras the world over were supposed to be celebrating this greatest of geniuses all season long, but that can't happen now. Groupmuse will not let Corona spoil Beethoven's birth year. Let's be together with Beethoven. It'll be a top-quality musical livestream, sandwiched by Zoom gatherings on either end so we can applaud together, share together, be together. We'll also have a Q&A with the artists after the performance for all who wish to join. We're charging $3 to reserve a spot because there''s a maximum capacity allowed by Zoom. We're then asking that everyone at the concert contribute what they can ($10 recommended minimum) and all of the money collected will be split between these great artists and Groupmuse itself - which is fighting so hard to keep this community alive in these times. Can''t wait to see you there! Best, *Don''t forget to support our Emergency Relief Fund for musicians! We''re closing in on our goal of $25,000!

Dear Groupmuse, Yes, The Handel and Haydn Society is older than Brahms. Yes, its first season was during the Napoleonic Wars. But what''s so miraculous about the ensemble is not just its age -- but its vitality, its freshness, its capacity to keep this music as alive as it was when Handel and Haydn roamed the Earth, as though no time has passed at all. That's the true legacy of H+H. And so, with that vitality and that freshness, they join our own most-vital movement at a time when new thinking is more important than ever. Yes indeed: This week, we've got our Handel and Haydn Massivemuse. H+H concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky and their principal cellist Guy Fishman join for a production-quality livestream: HD cameras, lush environment, top quality sound, stress-tested broadband connection, the kitchen sink. They've got Bach, they've got Vivaldi, they've got more. And, as ever, they'll be joining us in the post-concert after-Zoom for a Q and A. The pre-concert Zoom hang starts at 7.30pm Eastern Daylight Time. Can't wait to see you there! Best, *Alas, on this program neither Handel nor Haydn will be featured. But you have to admit, The Vivaldi and Bach Society doesn''t quite have the same ring to it.

Dearest Groupmuse, If Ludwig van Beethoven loomed large in Johannes Brahms'' mind, Clara Schumann loomed large in his heart. A bust of Beethoven gazed upon Brahms while he worked, and Clara -- one of the great musical forces of her age -- nurtured the much younger Brahms'' talent from early on and he fell for her, hard. You could hardly find two more formative influences on the great master of German High Romanticism -- and tonight, we''re presenting a triptych of these three giants, side by side by side. Prize-winning virtuosi violinist Max Tan and pianist Mackenzie Melemed have distinguished themselves in our community of players not simply because of their astonishing talent -- but also because of their live-stream mastery. The quality is so strong it almost feels like you''re in the living room with them, so you might want to wear a mask just to be extra safe... We start with Ludwig van Beethoven''s Romance No. 2 in F major, Op. 50, followed by Clara Schumann''s glorious Three Romances for Violin and Piano, Op. 22. The finale of the program is one of the most sublime expressions of these two influences blending with so much more in Johannes Brahms'' Violin Sonata No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108. We begin with a Zoom gathering to touch in to our togetherness at 7.30 PM Eastern Daylight Time, then move to the live-stream at 8pm EDT, and then it''s back to Zoom for a Q&A with our terrific artists to bring it all back home. Can''t wait to see you tonight! Best

Dear Groupmuse, In these times of crisis, when great shocks to our collective system bring down what''s brittle and accentuate the eternal truths of love, connection, beauty, and compassion, our best selves might find occasion to rise. Stories of resilience, resourcefulness, and true service are proliferating through our cultural consciousness, reminding us all of what we, too, are capable of. Project: Music Heals Us, richly profiled in this last Sunday's New York Times, is one of these stories. For years, they've been committed to bringing eternally divine music into corners of society that have been left behind - prisons, homeless shelters, refugee centers. When the pandemic broke, this incredible group of humans heard the call and they immediately started organizing to bring live-streamed classical concerts to the trenches of this brutal warfare - to give the sick, the dying, the terrified, the isolated a portal into the sublime from lonely hospital beds. And we here at Groupmuse are so blessed to boast that a great many of these artists are members of the extended Groupmuse family - they've played Massivemuses, the living room scene, online 'muses, and on. In fact, cellist Oded Hadar, mentioned in the above article, played the second groupmuse ever, in Somerville MA, over 7 years ago. And so, this Saturday''s Massivemuse is to support and honor PMHU's heroic and humbling efforts. On the docket is the "trio in Kentucky" mentioned in the NYT article. Co-director of PMHU and violist Molly Carr, aforementioned cellist Oded Hadar, and pianist Anna Petrova - all musicians of the absolute highest caliber - are beaming in from the Midwest with Brahms, Schumann, Chopin, Gershwin, Mendelssohn, and birth-year boy Beethoven for a sumptuous evening and a life-giving cause. We'll start with a Zoom, move on to the music, and afterward, we'll have a Q&A with the directors of Project Music Heals Us, Molly Carr and Andrew Janss, to hear their astonishing story. The evening is pay-what-you-want, and the proceeds are split between Groupmuse and Project: Music Heals Us. We can't wait to share this inspiring evening with you all, and we're grateful for the opportunity. Best,

Dear Groupmuse, Most of us by now know that we've got our Groupmuse Foundation launch party tomorrow from 5.30 pm EST to 6.30 - out in time to make an evening groupmuse, or whatever else makes for a fulfilling Saturday night. It'll be a Zoom gathering filled with music, gratitude, good cheer, our whole team, and some stand out community musicians coming forward to share what Groupmuse has meant to them over the years -- and especially since the pandemic. All wonderful, and if you've ever loved a groupmuse, you don't want to miss it. But there's more: Our ceaseless labors of love and our undying commitment to our values have caught the attention of some extremely high profile individuals, and one of them has prepared a special message just for this launch party!!! I'm not one to spill the beans, but I'll give you a hint: whoever you might be, you've heard of him. We're so grateful to be folding this gentle giant into our evening, and we hope you'll be there too! See you Saturday! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, One of the upsides of this new age in the life of Groupmuse is that we're no longer bound to location. Whether you live in Nebraska or Nantucket, you can share a musical moment with NYC's best young musicians without putting your shoes on. However, though space no longer limits us, time still does. An evening performance in Seattle means an absurdly late night for Boston 'musers, so long as we remain a largely diurnal species. So, out of deep reverence and love for our expansive West Coast community, we're organizing our first West Coast Massivemuse Livestream - a top quality stream featuring a leading artist for a huge crowd - at a start time that doesn''t catch you in the middle of the day. And for the occasion, we're busting out the fireworks. Beaming in live from a recording studio in Hawaii, Eric Silberger is one of the greatest violinists of our generation - literally: a prize winner at the Tchaikovsky Competition - and he's readying for perhaps the most staggering displays of virtuosity in the entire violin repertoire - all of Niccol? Paganini's 24 Caprices. Paganini is history's greatest violinist, and he composed this series to showcase just what the violin could do when pushed to its limit. These pieces are gorgeous, tuneful, electrifying, and in hands a capable as Eric's, they're unforgettable. This'll be a big one too - almost 70 minutes worth of music, split apart by a brief intermission. You won't be the same afterward. The opening Zoom hang starts at 6pm PDT, the performance starts at 6.30pm PDT, and we'll join back together afterward for a Q&A with our sure-to-be-exhausted hero of the evening, Eric Silberger. See you there! Best,

We''ll have a before-and-after Zoom chat -- after all, we''re not just listeners here, we all create the culture of Groupmuse through our joyous participation. Speaking of which, it''s a Saturday night on the cyber-town, so we''re encouraging folks to get dressed for the Massivemuse; totally optional of course, but it could be fun... See you then and there! Dear Groupmuse Fam, In a week''s time, our country heads to the polls. Many of us have already voted, and most of us are probably going to be feeling a lot of apprehension as we wait for fate. This coming weekend, which features an ultra rare Halloween-on-a-Saturday-with-a-full-moon, will no doubt be something of a crescendo to this hectic election cycle -- and without the costume parties to distract and delight us. But fear not -- Groupmuse has been hard at working making sure we all have a way to be absorbed, connected, and inspired for the whole weekend, with our Halloween weekend virtual mini-festival. We''ve corralled a group of some of our most celebrated and wonderful musician friends for the occasion -- and they''re all donating all of the money raised to the Groupmuse Foundation so we can continue our crucial work for musicians. That''s commitment. That''s solidarity. We are so grateful. The legendarily great pianist Cristian Budu is on Friday evening with Beethoven and Chopin. Our Planetary Music Movement leader Dara Hankins is on cello with Bach for a Saturday Matinee. The brilliant cello/piano duo of Tony Rymer and Yannick Rafalimanana are in from Berlin with Beethoven, Faur? and more for some Saturday mid-day splendor and substance. Violin/cello virutoso duo M?lanie Clapi?s and James Jaffe are in for Saturday evening with a Maurice Ravel masterpiece and some Piazzolla. Sunday evening, we''ve got the world class flutist Sooyun Kim in with Telemann''s 12 Fantasias for solo flute. If you haven''t gotten around to supporting the Groupmuse Foundation, here''s the perfect chance -- just enjoy a groupmuse this weekend and pay whatever you wish. It''ll all go toward making our big-hearted community project whole. Can''t wait to see you there! best,

This Saturday - 7.30pm EDT: Long-time Groupmuse heroes and prize-winning virtuosi Tony Rymer and Yannick Rafalimanana are beaming in from Berlin with two of Beethoven''s eternally great cello sonatas - his 3rd and his 4th. Next Saturday, June 6th - 7.30pm EDT: 2012 Clara Haskil Grand Prize Winner, the Brazilian-born pianist Cristian Budu is not just of the greatest pianists of this century - he''s also one of Groupmuse''s founding forefathers. With a style supple, intellectual, rhapsodic, and profound, Budu will enlighten the lot of us with one of Beethoven''s most glorious monuments -- the Waldstein Sonata and more. Saturday, June 13th - 7.30pm EDT: The New England-based Palaver Strings is a brilliant string symphony of young musician-activists with huge hearts and talent for miles. Hey there, As the current pandemic closes down arts institutions world-wide, Groupmuse has emerged as one of the very few classical music organizations capable of adapting to support musicians through this crisis with real, meaningful, paying performances. In the past 4 weeks, Groupmuse has pivoted dramatically towards online livestreaming events, and the reception has been tremendous. In that short time, we''ve organized 50 concerts, raising $30,000 for players (not including our $25k musician relief fund). We''re foraging a path for both Groupmuse and musicians through this crisis - and beyond. As such, our needs as an organization are changing dramatically. One area in which we'll be needing much more support is software development. Not only do we need to upgrade our videochat + streaming technology, we also need to build out the platform to support, coordinate, and promote literally thousands of livestreamed concerts! And so, we are asking: Do you know a music-loving coding whiz who would want to help us build the next Groupmuse? Because we''re hiring a Front-end Javascript Software Developer. If so, please apply here! Also, a fun note - if this person ends up joining the team long-term, they''ll work towards becoming an equal worker-owner in our cooperative structure! So if you have any leads - please forward this email along! Thank you so much for being part of this crazy journey with us, Team Groupmuse Sent by Groupmuse, PBC (what''s this?) We''ll gather in a Zoom chat, breakout into small groups, and be with one another in a way that this moment allows for. At 8PM EDT, we''ll tune into YouTube for a Groupmuse-exclusive livestream featuring Zlatomir Fung - Generation Z''s most lauded cellist. Among other gems, he''ll be unleashing the power of J.S. Bach''s eternally beloved First Cello Suite. Afterward, we''ll come back to Zoom - this time with the artist - and have a soulful Q&A with the crowd until it''s time for bed or whatever else is next! Dear groupmuser, Music has moved so many of us through this trying year. Today is an opportunity to support the arts - at a time when musicians urgently need our support. The Groupmuse Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit that we started to foster classical music's transformation into a more resilient and inclusive art-form - to build out support systems for players left adrift in the Pandemic, so that they may build strength and solidarity through this crisis and beyond.
We are building the necessary online support infrastructure for musicians: Since March of this year, we've organized over 400 virtual groupmuses for our community, earning largely out-of-work musicians over $200,000. It takes an average musician 10 hours and $300 to begin livestreaming - and we've onboarded 200+ musicians since the Pandemic began. Help us be there for even more musicians to connect to online audiences while concert halls remain closed through 2021. Please consider giving to Groupmuse Foundation, so we may continue helping the musician community. And, if you've already given, thank you thank you thank you! You're the reason why the music is still pouring through our community to this day! ?? Sending resonant holiday wishes to you and yours, P.S. Dear Groupmuse Family, Yes, it's Beethoven's 250th year, and yes his epic tone tales stand as a potent mirror for the storms, stresses, and heroism of these trying times, and yes - we'll be 'musing on more Beethoven in the week's to come. But also: let's make some room for Mozart. The ease, the sublimity, the mellifluous bubbling forth - sure it's not a reflection of the unfolding global pandemonium, but we all need some sweet release. And so - there is the 92nd St. Y and there is Benjamin Hochman and there is a Friday night all-Mozart Livestream that'll make for our 2nd ever Livestream Night Out! Benjamin Hochman is one of the most brilliant pianists of the era - he's played all over the world, in solo recitals and sitting before the orchestra. And his Mozart is beyond comparison. Such clarity, yet such depth. Friday night'll be the works - three mature masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus: his Fantasia in C Minor, K. 475, his Sonata No. 14 in C Minor, K. 457 and his Sonata No. 12 in F Major, K. 332. The livestream will be available to the public starting at 7.30, but we're organizing a before-and-after Zoom hangout session that starts at 7pm, for all of us humans who so need connection and communion in these times of isolation. We'll organize breakout groups so that'll we'll all get chance to share story with one another to build our togetherness. These opportunities to be with one another through the ether have proven to be very popular with the community, so we hope you'll join! What's more, before the show begins, the Artistic Director of 92nd St. Y, our brilliant friend Hanna Arie-Gaifman - who organized the event - will join us in Zoom to introduce the program. Because Zoom's capacity is limited, we are charging people $3 to reserve a spot and at the show, we're asking that attendees contribute whatever they wish to support Groupmuse as it fights like heck for the life of this art form. Can't wait to see you there! Best, P.S. We''re hiring a full-stack developer - more details here!

Dearest Groupmuse, Some classical music works have such transcendental power that they're lifted out of the orbit of the classical music world, find a place in the mainstream cultural experience, and forever become part of our collective memory. Bach's 1st Cello Suite is as potent an example of that as there's ever been - and an economical one too: all of that depth, beauty, and mystical insight delivered on just four strings by a lone human. And that, my friends, makes it a perfect masterwork for Times of Quarantine. So, in partnership with our forever-friends, The Aspect Chamber Music Series, we're bringing through one of the best cellists in the world to unleash this ever-familiar yet somehow-still-unknowable piece of Genius for this Saturday's Livestream Massivemuse. Last year, Zlatomir Fung won first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition - arguably the most prestigious of all international competitions - becoming the first U.S. cellist in more than 30 years to take home the Gold. On top of that, he's only 20 years old - so we have many more years of his insight, his dazzling virtuosity, and his big-hearted sensitivity to look forward to. He opens with Bach's First Cello Suite, and then he's joined by his partner-in-isolation, the terrific violinist I-Jung Huang, for the eternally beloved showpiece, the Handel/Halvorsen Passacaglia. After the intermission, it's back to solo cello with Max Reger's lush and late romantic answer to Bach's offering, his Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello, also in G Major. The finale of the program is Zlatomir's own original Bulgarian Fragments, written for violin and cello and drawing on the Bulgarian roots of our evening's hero. As ever, we'll start with a Zoom hang at 7.30pm Eastern Daylight Time, and then head to the livestream for an 8pm EDT curtain, and then we'll meet back in the Zoom afterward for a soulful Q&A with our great artist. Can't wait to see you there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, Last week we officially launched the Groupmuse Foundation - our new nonprofit that'll keep us strong in our service to musicians through the pandemic and beyond. This week, we celebrate. Musicians, hosts, living room groupmusers, virtual groupmusers -- you're all invited! Join us for our official Foundation Launch Party-muse on Saturday at 5:30pm EST- 6:30pm, where we enjoy a retrospective medley of some of the finest moments of the virtual groupmuse era, featuring Schubert, Beethoven, and so much more - delivered from the hands and hearts of some of the best players we know. We'll then have a Zoom hang with the whole Groupmuse team so you can get to know the group of zealots that's rising to the greatest challenge classical music has ever faced - and taking as many musicians along with us as we can. Afterward, we welcome everyone to hop into any of the groupmuses happening that night! It's free to RSVP and we ask anyone who can to donate as generously as they might - all contributions are going to the Groupmuse Foundation and will be fully tax-deductible. (We also totally understand if now's not a good time. Please don't let that stop you from joining us!) If you can't make it on Saturday, perhaps you'll still consider supporting the Foundation as we fight like heck for the future of this art form. In harmony and in service,

Dear groupmuser, The dust is finally starting to settle on the election bonanza, and, thus far, we seem to have made it through in one piece. Without counting too many unhatched chickens, let us breathe a sigh of relief. But it can''t be said enough that the work to build a better world continues and intensifies, as the crises upon us don''t live by the election calendar. Groupmuse is locked in an epochal effort to help shepherd this art form through the greatest challenge it has ever known, and we''re making transformational strides -- building out an organization that''ll foster a level of resilience that the classical music ecosystem so drastically needs. That''s why we started the Groupmuse Foundation -- to fund that effort. And as our last pitch of our Foundation launch campaign, we''re asking that folks chip in just $10 so that we can keep the music playing and keep its future bright. If everyone who got this email did just that, we''d be funded for the rest of the year and beyond. Thank you for the love, thank you for the support, thank you for the solidarity. Dear Groupmuse, One of the great and mysterious powers of music is its capacity to evoke a sense of place - even a place otherwise unfamiliar to the listener. I've never been to Finland, but I could swear I've felt the cold winds of the Baltic sea whipping on my face as I sink into a Sibelius symphony. For those who've never been to Bohemia, Dvor?k''s romping scherzi give a portal in to the frenetic joy of that place. And for those that have, Bohemian memories are locked up in the fabric of those rhythms, those harmonies. In times of quarantine, when we're locked down in whatever place we were when it all began, this power of music can be positively liberating. We can journey far and wide with just a decent pair of headphones. The internationally renowned pianist Leon Livshin understands this power, and so, for our next Massivemuse, he's preparing for us a tour around Central Europe. So pack your bags (metaphorically) and let's go on a trip together (while staying home and practicing strict social distancing)! Our wonderful partners at the Aspect Chamber Music Series have made the performance possible - they find the best artists from around the world and Leon's no exception: He's won top prizes at major competitions, he's played at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and so many more. An intellectual and a deeply-feeling virtuoso, he'll be taking us to Hungary with Bela Bartok and Franz Liszt, to Poland with Frederic Chopin, and to Austria with Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert. We'll start with a Zoom at 7.30pm ET, then the live-stream at 8pm ET, and then back to Zoom for a Q&A with Leon afterward. And it's travel on the cheap! $3 to reserve a spot, and pay-what-you-want at the show. Can't wait to fly with you! best,

Dear Groupmuse, First off, Happy 4th of July! For all those gathering in crowds, please stay safe out there! And for those choosing to stay home -- we''ve got quite the treat: For the evening, starting at 5pm EDT (and finishing before explosive and colorful displays have begun), we''ve got our friends at Autumn Salon beaming forth a most luscious and splendid performance: Russian virtuoso Asiya Korepanova is live from the Autumn Salon with a production-quality feed, featuring works by the great American Amy Beach, followed by Franz Liszt, Piotr Tchaikovsky, and Modest Mussorgsky -- coupled with Korepanova''s original art work and poetry. We''ll be joined by Asiya in the after-Zoom for a Q&A with the artist! Looking forward to seeing you there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, This here is the last call for tomorrow''s Massivemuse - featuring an exquisite piano trio from Project: Music Heals Us, which has been doing the beautiful and inspiring work of live-streaming classical music to the worst-suffering victims of COVID-19. In addition to a wonderful New York Times piece, this heroic work was also recently covered by CNN. So much love, praise, and gratitude for these folks fighting so hard to make a case for why this great art is more important now than ever -- despite the challenges that a world in quarantine presents for its creators. We''ll all gather together to hear their astonishing story, to share their divine music (Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, and more), and to support their work to the extent that we can. Can''t wait to see you all there! Best,

Dearest Groupmuse, Life isn't normal for anybody right now but Groupmuse is working overtime to continue serving our community - especially our beloved musicians - when you need us the most, doing our best to imbue this new world with the beauty and connection and support that is so lacking in an age of quarantine. We've brought thousands to the concert hall through our Nights Out program - which constitutes our most important revenue stream - but concert halls have shuttered for the rest of the season. So in our enduring commitment to you all and in the interest of having Groupmuse stand as some semblance of normalcy in deeply abnormal times, tonight we're taking a first pass at bringing Nights Out online. Our wonderful friends at the legendary NYC cultural establishment, the 92nd Street Y have arranged for a top-quality livestream tonight, and they want our community to join. They're beaming out the titanically great pianist Jonathon Biss, as he shares Ludwig van Beethoven's last three sonatas, following Biss' own introduction. These are three of the most profound and poignant and bizarre and masterful works ever written, and Biss breathes such life into them. We'll all gather on Zoom 30 minutes before the performance to connect to one another in breakout groups - to check in, to share, to be witnessed, and to witness - and then we'll all head to the livestream together. After the concert is over, after Beethoven's spirit has been reawakened, and after our tears have been shed in tribute to such enduring greatness, we'll gather again, starting with a brief address by Hanna Arie-Gaifman, the Director of 92nd Street Y''s Tisch Center for the Arts, who will share her thoughts on cultural institutions in a time of social distancing. Then, we'll get back into breakout groups to share reflections on the music, to be there for one another, and to say goodnight before going our separate ways. We're charging $10 for tickets to the gathering - all of which goes to Groupmuse, which is fighting so hard to keep our cultural community healthy in these times. We hope to see you there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, Regarding this Saturday''s Massivemuse: Cristian Budu is one of the world''s great pianists. He won top prize at the Clara Haskil Competition in 2012. He''s played before orchestras the world over. His Chopin recording was deemed an Editor''s Choice by Gramophone Magazine -- who also dubbed a Budu Beethoven recording a "Top Ten Recent Beethoven Recording." Oh, also: He''s true Groupmuse family -- not only hosting the proto-muses in Boston a decade back that inspired the movement, but thereafter, he was a roommate of Sam and Kyle - two Groupmuse founders - the year that Groupmuse took off in Boston. They had some great, late nights together, I assure you. Budu is back in his mother country of Brazil - but he''s beaming forth for the community he was so instrumental in founding a high-quality stream with a couple of the greatest pieces ever written: Beethoven''s Waldstein Piano Sonata - a heroic masterpiece of warmth and momentum, poignancy and drama. Schumann''s Kreisleriana - one of Budu''s signature works, he brings forth the color, the madness, the beauty, the frenzy, and the depth of what is arguably Schumann''s finest achievement. The Zoom pre-concert hang starts at at 7.30pm EDT, the live-stream is at 8 pm EDT, and we''ll be back for an after-Zoom Q&A with our great friend Budu. Can''t wait to see you all there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse Fam, Last Saturday, we had our first-ever live-stream Massivemuse. Our biggest groupmuse in history, folks from all over the world tuned in to share smiles, conversation, Zoom-dancing, and Ludwig van. And the reviews are in. Voices from our community:
We were right there with you and we hear you loud and clear - for the foreseeable future, we'll be organizing at least a once-weekly nationwide live-stream Massivemuse, to weave this community ever-more tightly together to have the resilience for whatever's next. And this coming Saturday night Massivemuse is gonna be an utterly unique and spellbinding treat. The Russian born Alexandrov-Skliar Duo were ready for this crisis. While the rest of us were fumbling with Zoom streams and laptop cameras, this couple was way ahead of the curve. With an in-home professional-level broadcast studio complete with a remote-controlled multi-camera setup, they're ready with an experience that sets the bar high for the rest of us imagining what a socially-distant society with thriving performing arts culture looks like. Oh, and also, they're staggeringly great musicians. Both Alexey Alexandrov and Ekaterina Skliar are masters of both the mandolin and the domra - a Russian folk instrument that they wield with electrifying virtuosity. The award-winning duo has a night of Bach, Scarlatti, Albeniz, and Piazzolla - coupled with lesser-known works in a Russian folk-style at the ready. We'll have a Zoom hangout beforehand, and afterward we'll be joined by the artists for an optional Q&A (folks can go back into breakout rooms if that's their preference; the breakout rooms are so much fun.) We're charging people $3 to reserve a spot and are orienting towards a pay-what-you-will model at the performance so no one gets turned away for lack of funds. We can't wait to see you there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, This July 4th will no doubt feel different than those that have come before. Not only must we be far more circumspect about who we're sharing our cookout condiments with, but at this moment of great cultural upheaval and transition, it behoves us to revisit the fundamentals of what we want this country to truly embody and what we want to fight for as we watch the bombs bursting in air. But leading up to that, we've got an early evening Massivemuse to gather around before the sun goes down. And we've prepared some fireworks of our own: Autumn Salon is an organization that aims to raise awareness around individuals who, through connecting the traditional wisdom of the past with the living energy of the present, are contributing to a global culture of the future. Its aesthetic is immaculate and its quality can't be topped. And for July 4th, Autumn Salon is bringing in the great Russian pianist Asiya Korepanova for a production-quality livestream, beamed forth just for our community. Korepanova has won international competitions, played at Carnegie Hall, and established herself as one of the most multi-faceted superstar talents rising today. Saturday will be a showcase: She'll start with her own transcription of works by Amy Beach - arguably America's greatest Romantic composer and one of the desperately few woman from that era whose music we still celebrate. The second half of the program will be works by Franz Liszt, Tchaikovsky, and Modest Mussorgsky - coupled with original poems and artworks that Korepanova has prepared for these works. So many dimensions of talent and expression - it'll make for an unforgettable one. Out of respect for those who need to make the fireworks, we're starting the evening with a Zoom gathering at 5pm EDT. Then we'll move to the YouTube stream at 5.30pm for a production abundant with Autumn Salon's signature lushness and care. Then it's back to the Zoom for a Q and A with our star for the evening, and we'll wrap before sundown! Can't wait to see you all there! Best,

Dear Groupmuse, At our first few livestream Massivemuses, we showcased ensembles quarantined together - a trio, then a duo, then last week, a string quartet. But the fact of this moment is that most musicians don't have the luxury of being quarantined with their ensembles and social distancing means, among so many other things, delving headlong into the solo rep. What power can we unleash when we stand alone, as the CDC recommends? This Saturday, our next Massivemuse is going to explore the kaleidoscopic range that the solo violin is capable of, and, for the occasion, we've enlisted the electrifying talents of one of our generation''s greatest violinists - Russian-American virtuoso Philippe Quint. This email would get long and boring if I was to list the manifold notches in his belt, but they include 17 commercial releases, numerous Grammy nominations, innumerable awards, playing at Walt Disney Hall, soloing with the London Phil, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and you get the idea: this guy's real, real good. Nimbly wielding a 1708 Stradivarius, Quint has readied for our community a veritable rainbow of expression. We'll start with a couple of movements of Bach - the highest priest of music for solo violin. Then we've got Sonata #3 by Eug?ne Ysa?e - who brought solo violin to its Romantic apex. Then it'll be the soulful modernism (and dizzying virtuosity) of some of John Corigliano''s Red Violin Caprices. Following that will be a piece by the eternally beloved saint of the violin, Fritz Kreisler. The finale of the program is worth a paragraph break: It's a piece by the American icon Charlie Chaplin, who, among so many other accomplishments, wrote deep and poignant music that Philippe Quint has been essential in resuscitating and championing. The Zoom hangout begins at 7.30pm EDT, the Youtube Livestream begins at 8pm EDT, and we'll have a Q&A with Philippe after the performance. Can't wait to see your faces! Be well,
