Matching gift deadline extended to November 20

During a season unlike any other, hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers visited Governors Island. Since then, hundreds of you have donated to the Governors Island Giving Drive, to help us close a critical gap in funding needed to care for the Island. Thank you! We've made great progress, but we still have a long way to go.

Ticket reservations are required to visit Governors Island this year. Make sure to read our health and safety protocols before arriving for your ferry. Governors Island ferries are always free for residents of NYCHA housing, IDNYC holders, Governors Island Members, current and former military servicemembers, kids 12 and under, and seniors 65 and up. PUMPKIN POINT: SATURDAY 10/24 - SUNDAY 11/1

Pumpkin Point returns next weekend! The annual pumpkin patch will be back this year in a socially distanced format with thousands of pumpkins and seasonal decorations arranged across Nolan Park and plenty of room to spread out. Visitors are encouraged to take home one pumpkin each, free of charge. Pumpkin Point will be open daily beginning next Saturday through the end of our 2020 season, Sunday 11/1. Stop by to grab a pumpkin and savor the season in an idyllic setting ?

Every year, the Friends of Governors Island raises nearly 75% of the funding needed to care for the Island's 120 acres of open space. In a normal year, the majority of this funding comes to us through events. While we're unable to hold our annual gala this year, we still need to raise funds in order to provide critical care for Governors Island's open spaces. Soak up the summertime on Governors Island. From biking and hiking to grilling and chilling, you can find all the best parts of summer here on our shore. Before you visit, get familiar with our health and safety guidelines, including:

Visitors must reserve tickets in advance online, selecting ferry times both to and from the Island. Show up 15-30 minutes before your departure time.
Face coverings are required while boarding and riding our ferries and while on the Island.
Hand washing and sanitizing stations can be found throughout the Island, and increased cleaning protocols are in place.
Remember to stay 6 feet apart!

See composting in action at Earth Matter''s Compost Learning Center and Soil Start Farm, open for passive visits every weekend in the Urban Farm, 12-4pm. Visitors can discover how compostable materials turn into soil-enriching compost and, on Sundays, meet their friendly flock of chickens. Visitors must reserve tickets in advance on our website, selecting ferry times both to and from the Island. Make sure to show up 30 minutes before your departure time, and don''t miss your ferry back to the city.
Face coverings are required while boarding and riding our ferries, and on the Island when social distancing is not possible.
Hand washing and sanitizing stations have been installed throughout the Island, and increased cleaning protocols are in place.
Remember to stay 6 feet apart!

Ferries are always free for NYCHA residents, IDNYC holders, current and former military servicemembers, kids 12 and under and seniors 65 and up. They''re also free for everyone on weekends before noon.

FERRY TICKET RESERVATIONS

This year, visitors must reserve tickets in advance to visit Governors Island. Our new ticket reservation system ensures social distancing is possible on our ferries. When coming to the Island, show up 30 minutes early for the ferry and have your ticket ready. Get tickets and more info at govisland.org ?

BROOKLYN WEEKEND SERVICE FROM RED HOOK

Brooklyn ferries run on weekends starting this Saturday 7/18. To reach a broader range of New Yorkers, Governors Island ferries will run to and from Red Hook/Atlantic Basin this year. There will be no Governors Island ferries at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park in 2020. Learn more about Governors Island ferry service ?

Governors Island is an outdoor dining destination. Cyclists, rejoice: seven miles of car-free paths are now yours to pedal. Bring your bike on the ferry for free or rent one when you get the Island, then set out on a scenic spin. Blazing Saddles rents bikes, scooters, surreys and more every day (with free one-hour rentals before noon on weekdays) and three Citi Bike stations make it easy to get moving. The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council has announced their 11 Artists in Residence as part of the Governors Island Residency Initiative. The Trust for Governors Island introduced the Initiative with LMCC and 18 other organizations in July, and now LMCC''s 11 artists will start working in their studio spaces at the Arts Center. BROOKLYN FERRIES RUNNING MONDAY 10/12

This Monday, Brooklyn ferries will be running until the Island closes at 6:15PM. Manhattan ferries will run on a normal weekday schedule that day. There will be no 6:45PM ferry from the Island to Red Hook/Atlantic Basin. Governors Island ferries are always free for residents of NYCHA housing, IDNYC holders, Governors Island Members, current and former military servicemembers, kids 12 and under, and seniors 65 and up. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES'' DAY

This Monday is Indigenous Peoples'' Day. Governors Island is part of the Lenapehoking, the traditional homeland of the Lenape people, which encompasses all of the greater New York City area. Originally utilizing the Island as grounds for hunting and fishing, the Lenape named it Pagganck, which refers to the Island''s plentiful nut trees. In honor of this day, we invite you to explore indigenous history and culture:

The Brooklyn Public Library is hosting several virtual events throughout the week, including discussions, presentations, and poetry readings on Monday.
The Greene Space is hosting its first ever multi-day celebration of North American Indigenous life and history.
The National Museum of the American Indian will present a virtual program for middle- and high-schoolers, Monday at 1PM.
Learn about the American Indian Community House, a non-profit that has served Native Americans across New York City since 1969. For the past three years, AICH has hosted programs on the Island. PUMPKIN POINT: SATURDAY 10/24 - SUNDAY 11/1

Pumpkin Point is back beginning on Saturday. There will be plenty of pumpkins to go around and space to spread out when the annual patch returns to Nolan Park in socially distanced form. Visitors can grab one pumpkin each to take home for free! Pumpkin Point will be open daily starting this Saturday through the last day of our 2020 season, Sunday 11/1. Governors Island gave joy to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers this year. Now is your opportunity to give back.

Parks and open space have always been a haven for New Yorkers during hard times. Surrounded by miles of tranquil harbor and sky, Governors Island's wide-open space offers a joyful escape for all New Yorkers at a time when they need it most.

I want to support Governors Island

Every year, the Friends of Governors Island raises nearly 75% of the budget required to care for the Island's open space, from the lush hills that offer a panoramic view of our city (and the city's tallest slide!) to the young forest encircling Hammock Grove. Funds raised also allow us to provide visitor services, making the Island a more accessible and welcoming place for everyone.

In a normal year, the majority of this funding is secured through events. While we're unable to gather in person this year for our annual gala, we are turning to our fellow New Yorkers to help us fill the gap and provide critical care for the Island. An Island excursion is waiting for you just minutes away. Take a short ferry ride and escape to greener surroundings on Governors Island this summer. Before you visit, get familiar with our health and safety guidelines, including:

Visitors must reserve tickets in advance online, selecting ferry times both to and from the Island. Show up 15-30 minutes before your departure time.
Face coverings are required while boarding and riding our ferries and while on the Island.
Hand washing and sanitizing stations can be found throughout the Island, and increased cleaning protocols are in place.

This September, we announced the vision to bring a leading Center for Climate Solutions to Governors Island. Over the next several months, the Trust will engage stakeholders in realizing this vision, including a proposed rezoning that would unlock new academic, commercial, cultural and hospitality uses within development zones designated as part of the Island''s Master Plan.
