The future of opera

This month we shine a light on our Education department, who are behind an array of programmes that support opera audiences, performers and composers of the future. From filling auditoriums with school children to running intimate Raise Your Voice workshops for those with dementia and their carers, they work tirelessly to fulfill one of our driving ambitions as a charity � to open all hearts and minds to opera.

Our Head of Education, Chris Stones contemplates the future of opera and the work Glyndebourne has been doing to prepare for it.

Inspiring future performers

Matthew Durkan plays Belcore in our Tour production of L'elisir d'amore. He was first inspired by opera on a performance for school's trip.
"I went on a school trip to see The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera House. We were at a schools performance, sitting in the balcony seats, and I was just blown away by the power of the voices filling the theatre."
Alongside holding our performances for schools, we also support those who want to develop as opera performers. Take a look at our 2019-2020 Junior Performers.

Glyndebourne Academy Finale

The Glyndebourne Academy is an operatic development project that aims to support gifted and talented young singers. Last weekend our students had their final recital."The classical music industry needs to represent all types of people for a million reasons. Musical and vocal talent can be found anywhere; we must concentrate on spotting aptitude and giving it encouragement and opportunity so that it can flourish." � Mary King, Glyndebourne's Vocal Talent Consultant.

Growing up at Glyndebourne

Since 2011, Kitty and Gigi Casey have participated in a wide variety of Glyndebourne Youth Opera projects, including workshops and productions. As they both head off to university, they have shared their stories with us about growing up at Glyndebourne. We have loved being part of their journeys and watching them grow and would all like to wish Kitty and Gigi all the best in their future endeavours.

Supporters of the future

Supporters Peter and Jane have long been attracted to supporting musical education, so it seemed natural on the 50th anniversary of their first visit to support Glyndebourne's Education programme.

As the leaves are off the trees, and the frost appears on our cars in the morning, we are preparing once again for a very festive Christmas time.

Carol-singing children of Werther, tobogganing in Intermezzo and ice-skating in Vanessa, the bustling Christmas Eve market in La boh�me, Amahl�s magical encounter with the Three Kings in Amahl and the Night Visitors, or of course Hindemith�s Long Christmas Dinner � there�s plenty of festive spirit to be found in opera.

Season's Greetings to all our Members, supporters and audiences � thank you for your support throughout 2019

It's been quite the year. It started with our new commission Agreed, featuring over 80 people from the local community, which reached a live audience of nearly 4,500. The year then continued with three new productions and six wonderful revivals across Festival and Tour, performed live to 43,000 people at Glyndebourne and venues across the country. Over 50,000 people also enjoyed our cinema screenings and free online streams.

Glyndebourne on the BBC this Christmas

An extra Christmas treat: our new production of Die Zauberfl�te (The Magic Flute) - which premiered at this year's Festival - will be broadcast on Christmas Day on BBC Four at 7.00pm, or available afterwards on iPlayer.

Travelling in style

The semi-finalists for the 2020 Glyndebourne Opera Cup have been announced. Following preliminary heats, 19 singers aged 22-31 have been invited to take part in the Semi-final at Glyndebourne on 4 March. Tickets are available for both the Semi-final as well as the Final on 7 March.

This autumn

We''ve conceded that it''s not possible to stage The Magic Flute and Madama Butterfly this autumn as planned. The scale of these productions means rehearsals aren''t possible given the ongoing restrictions.

Instead, we're delighted to announce that we will be opening the auditorium doors on the 10 October with our new production of?In the Market for Love?based on Offenbach''s?Mesdames de le Halle, followed by a reduced, semi-staged version of Mozart''s?The Magic Flute. We will finish the season with a series of Christmas concerts. Safety remains our priority, so all productions will be performed to a significantly reduced audience.?

The full schedule and booking details for our new-look autumn will be released on 7 September - look out for more information in your inbox. Tickets will go on sale from 14 September. Festival 2021

From sparkling summer comedies to tragic intensity, Festival 2021 takes us from ecstasy to despair and back again, climaxing in the greatest operatic love-story of them all: Wagner''s?Tristan und Isolde.

We're sharing details of the repertoire now but won't release the performance schedule or other practical information until the New Year, to avoid the need for revisions should COVID-19 restrictions remain.?The?Member and Associate Member ticket ballots?will therefore take place in early 2021. It''s just over a week until public booking for Festival 2020 opens. In anticipation, we''ve asked some of the Glyndebourne staff which opera they''re looking forward to the most.

Alexandra Coghlan, Opera Content Consultant

'I can''t think of another opera that floored me more utterly and left me more shocked, overpowered and generally in pieces the first time I saw it than Dialogues des Carm?lites. I think it''s the combination of ravishingly beautiful music and the violent horror of the plot that is so devastating. I''m a sucker for a tragedy, and operas don''t come more tragic - in the truest and least melodramatic sense - than this one. Add Barrie Kosky into the mix and I'll be queuing up for every show with armfuls of tissues!'

'My highlight for this summer will be to experience once again the joy ofL''elisir d''amore! I watched this production seven times during our tour last autumn, welcoming over 1800 young people through our Performances for Schools programme, and found it fascinating to see how every performance felt fresh and how much fun the performers were having on stage each night. It''s a delightful production, with beautiful design and lighting, superb music and is very family friendly.'

'This summer I''m really excited that we are reviving Die Entf?hrung aus dem Serail. The production is a classic, with excellent attention to detail that creates beautiful imagery on stage. Musically, I''m really looking forward to Lisette Oropesa''s Konstanza, particularly the aria ''Marten aller arten'' which is both technically demanding and dramatically fascinating, requiring about 10 minutes of virtuosic performance.'

Dear Ms Rodriguez,

This is a particularly sad day in Glyndebourne's history as I share with you the news that we cannot stage a Festival this year. COVID-19's persistence means that we have taken the painful decision to cancel all remaining Festival 2020 performances.

I know that this cancellation will be as heartbreaking for you as it is for me. We maintained our optimism for as long as possible.

Glyndebourne is a relatively small charity but with big ambitions, driven by the belief that opera can transform lives. The Festival receives no public subsidy and our financial independence means that we are reliant on ticket sales to be able to operate. With this source of income now gone, it's not just our future that's at risk - the immediate livelihood of over 400 seasonal staff and artists has vanished. We have started a COVID-19 Emergency Appeal to help us to help them, and to secure Glyndebourne's long-term future for all.

As you may know, the Festival began more than 85 years ago, brought to life through the resolve and imagination of my grandparents John and Audrey. While there have been challenges since then, none since World War II has been so sudden and devastating as this one. We are absolutely determined to survive this.

We need you to help us. Please consider making a donation to our COVID-19 Emergency Appeal. The fund will be used to mitigate against the losses incurred by artists and seasonal staff, and help to secure Glyndebourne's long-term future.

To help keep the spirit of Glyndebourne alive during the closure, please join us every Sunday from 24 May as Glyndebourne Open House brings world-class opera to you at home. Tune in on YouTube every week for free access to classic Glyndebourne productions and, together, let's create a taste of the Festival experience. We can't conjure the smell of roses or the feel of the lawn but we can still share our passion for opera with friends and family - and nurture new audience members for the future. Tour 2020 update

Though the Government's policy on indoor performances is evolving, we've concluded that it won't be possible to stage our original schedule of performances this October. Instead, we have created a revised schedule which begins on 14 November, in the hope that a delayed start will improve the chances of performances going ahead. We expect to have a final update on Tour 2020 until the beginning of October.

This wise and warm-hearted comedy is a work of tremendous humanity and truth - a musical celebration of art itself.

Vladimir Jurowski conducts Glyndebourne's first ever staging, captured live at Festival 2011, starring Gerald Finley who makes his role debut as Hans Sachs.

What to expect this autumn

This autumn, we''re so looking forward to welcoming you back into the auditorium for our series of socially-distanced, indoor musical performances. Following yesterday''s update from the Prime Minister, these performances are still scheduled to take place. Introducing... Dialogues des Carm?lites

As Festival approaches we''ll be sharing a detailed look at the operas on stage this summer. In this installment, we take a look at Poulenc's Dialogues des Carm?lites, which makes its Glyndebourne premiere at Festival 2020.

In the video, our resident opera expert, Alexandra Coghlan, explores the real life events that inspired Poulenc, talks to the Glyndebourne Chorus about what it's like to work with director Barrie Kosky, and takes an in-depth look at the opera's devastatingly powerful final scenes.

Need to know
Based on a true story, the tragedy of Poulenc's Carm?lites is both a widescreen historical and political tragedy, and an intimate psychological exploration of faith.

Why this opera?
This is Glyndebourne's first ever production of a powerful 20th century classic. Such an intense, deeply psychological story is a perfect fit for director Barrie Kosky. In 2015 Kosky helmed our acclaimed production of Saul, a smash hit with audiences and critics alike.

Things to look out for
The final scene's Salve Regina is one of the most famous (infamous, even)endings in all opera. As the nuns march to face the guillotine they begin to sing a hymn - its steady, certain musical tread a contrast to the recitative-like music that dominates the opera.

Dear Ms Rodriguez,

Lady Mary Christie, 1937 - 2020

My dear mother passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of yesterday morning after a long and courageous battle. She will be remembered, in the words of my late father, as ''the heartbeat which is at the core of Glyndebourne's existence''. Her devotion to Glyndebourne, and in particular her love of the gardens, has enriched the lives of so many of us.

She will be missed by her children, grandchildren and extended family and we will dedicate Festival 2021 to her memory.

We were looking forward to rehearsals starting this month but following the Government's strong advice to avoid public gatherings in spaces such as theatres, we have taken the very sad but necessary decision to cancel all Festival performances until Tuesday 14 July 2020. This has not been an easy decision to make and we understand that these cancellations will come as hugely disappointing news to you, our audience, as it does to all company members.

Providing it's safe to do so, we're committed to reopening Festival 2020 after this date, even if creative changes are required. Further information will be available as soon as possible. We are also exploring different ways of offering the Glyndebourne Festival experience in other formats, whether that be via broadcast services or online platforms.

Our hearts go out to all our artists and loyal seasonal staff - two-thirds of our total workforce - who face a particularly bleak situation: for them, these cancellations mean the loss of their livelihood.

We have asked all affected ticket holders to consider converting the value of their cancelled tickets, either in part or full, into a donation (on which we will claim Gift Aid wherever possible). All donations will play a vital role in helping us to support these crucial members of our extended family and secure Glyndebourne's long-term financial viability. As you may be aware, public booking for Tour 2020 performances at Glyndebourne was due to open on 8 June. Though we remain hopeful that we''ll be able to share live opera with you this autumn, tickets won''t go on sale until the COVID-19 situation is clearer.

We''re continuing to monitor the Government''s advice on the safety of social gatherings and are planning for several scenarios.
