Future First Employability Skills Programme in partnership with Rothschild & Co
Between 2016 and 2019, we partnered with Rothschild & Co to deliver an Employability Skills Programme supporting young people most at risk of leaving school and not going into further training, education or employment.
110 students based in five schools across Cornwall, Bristol, Cambridgeshire, South Tyneside and West Sussex attended a series of employability workshops and mock interview sessions delivered by Future First and supported by alumni and local employers.
Students benefited from multiple encounters with employers who raised aspirations and supported them to make more confident and informed decisions about their futures. By the end of the three year programme, 85% of students felt confident they’d be able to get their job of choice in the future and 92% gained knowledge on how to access their ideal job.

Furthering our vision to see a world in which a young person’s start in life does not limit their future, we have begun working with a small number of special schools.
Providing students with special educational needs and disabilities with access to relatable role models helps them access a broader range of opportunities after school.
We delivered our first SEND workshop at Southfield School. Organising, designing and delivering these workshops was a big step in our progress towards our offer to SEND schools, and we are all very excited to see how this programme develops. Find out more about the workshops here. Why I give back

As we come to the end of the year, all of us at Future First would like to wish you a restful and well deserved break.
2019 has been another successful year for us. With your support, we are making real progress in our mission to ensure that every school and college in the country has an engaged and thriving alumni network.
We are pleased to announce that we will start 2020 with a new Chief Executive Officer. Justin Smith joins Future First from an education background having led a highly successful Multi-Academy Trust. Justin brings a history of enabling social mobility through educational achievement. He says, “Future First provides a vital role, creating alumni networks that support students as they make those all important life choices. I am hugely motivated to be part of the team impacting on the life chances of all young people, in particular the most vulnerable.”
We are excited to have Justin leading Future First into the new year, partnering with more than 400 schools and colleges and with over 250,000 registered alumni volunteers supporting our vision that no young person’s start in life should limit their future. But we want to do even more. 2020 marks ten years since Future First started. We are driven by a continuing desire to work with everyone who shares our vison: to create a world where the opportunities available to some are open to all.
We look forward to sharing our exciting plans for new projects with you throughout the coming year and beyond, secure in the knowledge that our quarter of a million alumni will become a growing and irresistible force for change in the social mobility landscape.

Our new Chief Executive
We are pleased to announce that we begin 2020 with a new Chief Executive Officer. Justin Smith brings a history of enabling social mobility through educational achievement having previously led a highly successful Multi-Academy Trust.
He says, “Future First provides a vital role, creating alumni networks that support students as they make all important life choices. I am hugely motivated to be part of the team impacting on the life chances of all young people, in particular the most vulnerable. I am equally excited to be working with a board that recognises the successes thus far and want to use them as a base to scale up our impact on social justice." Annual Review 2018/19
We are proud to release our Annual Review for 2018/19.
In 2018/19 we worked with over 520 state schools and colleges in 111 local authorities across England. In partnership with our member schools and employer partners we reached over 100,000 young people, providing opportunities for them to meet relatable role models, broaden their horizons, and open up new worlds of possibility.
In 2019/20 we are continuing with our vision to ensure that no young persons’ future is limited by their start in life. We continue to strive towards seeing every state school and college supported by a thriving and engaged alumni community, giving all young people access to role models and meaningful social capital. We remain passionate about the value that alumni networks bring to students, schools, communities and the social justice agenda. Commerce in the Classroom
In October we launched Commerce in the Classroom, our innovation pilot project connecting individuals working in international trade and commerce to year 12 students in schools across Cambridgeshire, Sussex and Norfolk.
Through a series of school based workshops professionals from across the commerce and international trade industries have been providing an insight into their careers, exposing students to a range of employment and career opportunities available within the growing sector and broadening their horizons. Students have had the opportunity to learn about exports and imports, supply chains and the skills required to work in a variety of different fields.
One student said “I have learnt that experience and skills are just as important as qualifications”, another told us “I have learnt how businesses work with people internationally on a daily basis depending on the market they operate within”. The pilot will come to an end this month and we will share our findings later in our evaluation report. Why I give back

We are all facing unprecedented challenges at this strange time. Future First is adapting to support schools in engaging alumni in new and innovative ways during the current crisis.
We are continuing to build alumni networks and engage with volunteers to provide support to young people during the period of school closures. Former students are stepping up and contributing in many different creative ways - from engaging with their old school through social media to offering donations and resources to creating advice videos for young people to watch at home.
The situation continues to develop but for Future First, the importance of using alumni to impact the confidence, motivation and life chances of young people remains completely unchanged. We are committed to supporting schools and colleges in any way we can.

How alumni are helping their old schools
Schools have been working in all sorts of creative ways to allow their students access to relatable role models from home. Here are just a few amazing examples:
Newsletters - Neale-Wade Academy asked alumni for insight into life in lockdown, particularly from key workers on the front line in the battle against coronavirus and created a newsletter featuring their stories.
Videos - Bottisham Village College is collating alumni career stories as a video for its online newsletter. A former student who has already attended assemblies at Bluecoat Academy filmed their tips and advice for students feeling under-prepared for university.
Websites - Waldegrave School is gathering alumni profiles to share as inspirational stories with their current students. Southmoor Academy have created a webpage featuring their alumni.
Recipes - Grey Coat Hospital School in Westminster has asked alumni for easy store cupboard recipes alongside sharing their career pathways and advice.
Donations - City of Norwich School have reached out for support in the form of donations of old laptops which could be repurposed for disadvantaged students who do not have the necessary technology to access work at home. How we are supporting young people learning at home
Our team have been working hard to adapt and create new resources that teachers and young people can use from home. They are designed to continue the exploration of careers and future pathways with the support of relatable role models and to build key skills such as resilience to support young people through this time.
Careers
A range of resources including case studies of alumni career pathways and self-reflection activities to encourage young people to assess their own skills & strengths.
Resilience
Resources based around resilience including identifying support networks and the importance of empathy, learning to support wellbeing and cope with pressure, tools to identify hobbies and interests and activities to learn about the skills of flexibility, perseverance and problem-solving.
Primary
A range of resources for primary aged children including what is resilience, activities to explore transitions happening in their life and strategies to manage these and tools to learn more about the world of work through interviewing people at home. Future First Research
In March 2020 Future First commissioned Teacher Tapp to survey teachers across the UK, asking them a series of questions about careers support in school.
Our findings showed that only 4% of teachers strongly agree they feel equipped to advise young people on the diversity of careers available today. Young people face important choices early and it could feel like some careers or education pathways may not be attainable without enough information and advice. Alumni volunteers can help fill that information gap.
Alumni and role model volunteers can support teachers, providing a wealth of information and inspiration to help young people make informed choices about the future. The power of relatable role models who went to the same schools, sat in the same classrooms and grew up in the same areas is undeniable.
Our polling shows that:
Only 4% of teachers strongly agree they feel equipped to advise young people on the diversity of careers available.
Younger teachers feel more confident about advising young people on careers (1 in 2 (49%) teachers in their 20s as opposed to under a third (32%) in their 50s)
Primary school teachers are less likely to think it is relevant for them to feel equipped to advise young people on the diversity of careers (14% primary v 1% secondary)
Mentoring and assemblies are the most welcome support volunteers can provide current students according to teachers
Over half of teachers surveyed think volunteers could help support their students with building motivation, confidence and resilience
