Former Islanders� 1st round pick, Duncan MacPherson, vanished while on a skiing trip near Vienna, Austria in 1989. In 2003, his body was discovered after an ice thaw at the ski slope where he was last seen. No one truly knows what happened to him.

Did you know?

If you�ve followed Finnish professional hockey, or more specifically TPS, back in the 1970s & 1980s you may remember a guy named�Timo Nummelin. He also played regularly for Kiekko-67 of the I-divisioona until the ripe young age of 46 in 1994. What you may not know is at the age of 70 (yes, you read that correctly), Timo laced them up for a game last season with PKS (IV-divisioona) & registered 2 assists - his first professional points in 23 years!

Similarly, many of you may remember the late�Gordie Howe played a single game for the IHL�s Detroit Vipers back in 1997-98 at the age of 69.

Ken Doraty�s name may not jump out at you as an NHL record holder, but his record will never be broken. He scored only 15 goals in his career, but 3 of those came in a single game - all in overtime. Before the NHL implemented the sudden-death overtime format, teams played a full 10 minute extra period. Doraty scored a hat-trick in OT for the Leafs in 1934, besting the Ottawa Senators 7-4.

Brendan Shanahan, current President of the Toronto Maple Leafs, grew up in the Greater Toronto Area & was of course a big fan of the team. In 1983, he was practicing at a local rink when he heard that Leafs� Captain Rick Vaive was also there. Excited, he went to the locker room to ask for an autograph; however, Vaive did not oblige. Four years later, Shanahan was a rookie in the NHL for New Jersey & faced off against - you guessed it - Vaive! The two dropped the gloves & it wasn�t until after the game that Vaive�s teammate, Jim Korn, advised him why Shanahan wanted to scrap - over the autograph denial!

It is NHL All-Star Week in North America, so here are some interesting facts about the
event�s history:

? The first NHL All-Star Game took place in Toronto on October 13, 1947.
? The original format saw the defending Stanley Cup champions take on select
players from the other teams. This format lasted until 1968.
? In 1979 & 1987, the All-Star Game saw select NHL players play the Soviet Union
team.
? In 1998, the game�s format, which previously pitted select players from each
conference against each other, now sees Team North America vs. Team World.
? From 2011 until 2015, the teams were decided by a fantasy draft. Captains would
alternate selections between the 2 teams.
? In 2015, the game was changed to 4 divisional teams playing 3-on-3 in a single
elimination tournament. The first round pits the Atlantic vs. Metropolitan & the
Pacific vs. the Central.

The NHL playoffs are still rolling along, but the 2020-2021 season is officially under way in Europe and as guys are reassigned, loaned to different leagues and signed as free agents it can be difficult to keep track. Hannes Hyvonen?- After a long professional career that included two Liiga championships with Karpat and a KHL championship with Dynamo Minsk, he is returning to Karpat to be an assistant coach for their U16 squad.
Evan Bouchard - Add his name to the growing list of over 100 NHL players and prospects who are starting the season in Europe. The Oilers loaned the 20-year-old defenseman to Sodertalje of the Allsvenskan to start the season. Sidenote: The Allsvenskan is Sweden''s second tier league, but with so many NHL caliber players finding, at least temporary, homes in this league to start the season, it might not be a bad idea to get your eyeballs on some of these games. ??
Tobias Viklund - After seven seasons in the KHL, the 34-year-old defenseman is returning?to his native Sweden to play for MODO, where he helped them win a championship in 2007.
Emil Bemstrom - With 56 NHL games under his belt, the Blue Jackets have loaned the 21-year-old Swede to HIFK of the Finnish Liiga to start the season. Of note, Columbus general manager?Jarmo Kekalainen started his management career as GM of HIFK.
Jan Mikael Jarvinen - After a year in the DEL, the 32-year-old Finn is take his talents to Malmo of the SHL.
Joel Edmundson - The Stanley Cup Champion, who spent this past season with the Carolina Hurricanes, was traded to Montreal.
Yanic Duplessis?- The 17-year-old, who was selected by Drummondville in the QMJHL draft last year and hopes to find a spot on thier roster this year, announced?that he was gay?because he didn''t want to hide it and?hoped it would?inspire?more people to embrace who they are and make announcements like this unnecessary in the future.?

Between the Stanley Cup Final, the upcoming NHL Draft, trades, buyouts, pending free agency AND the start of the regular season in Europe and all the transfers and signings that come with that, last week was outrageously busy in the world of hockey.?

Dylan Ashe - The Lethbridge Hurricanes prospect died in a single-car accident last Sunday.?
Ryan Lasch - One of the most dominant offensive threats in the SHL the past three seasons, averaging a point per game and fnishing in the top three in league scoring every year, announced this summer that he would be exploring free agency after he and Frolunda couldn''t come to an agreement on an extension. On Sunday, he found a new home with the Pelicans?in the Finnish Liiga.?
Raphael Lavoie - Last week, his loan agreement with Rogle was terminated, but he''s found a new home with Vasby of the Allsvenskan for the duration of the season...or at least until NHL training camp begins.?
Steven Stamkos - The Tampa Bay Lightning captain has been out with an injury since February, had?core muscle surgery in March, aggrivated in during the summer training camp and has been?"unfit to play" in the Stanley Cup playoffs until Game 3 of the Final against Dallas. He played five shifts for a total of 2:47 before leaving again after aggrivating his injury, but scored a quintessentially Stamkos goal to help his team win the game 5-2. He has been ruled out for the rest of the series.?
Brayden Point - One of the Conn Smythe frontrunners is tied for the scoring lead with 13 goals and 32 points in 22 post-season games.
Alex Turcotte - One of five Kings prospects that were loaned to train with?Berlin of the DEL last week. It''s still TBD if any of them will play in games for the Polar Bears, but it''s important to note that the?Anschutz Entertainment Group owns both teams.?
Cole Caufield - When Lavoie''s loan agreement was terminated, it was rumored that Rogle was trying to coax the Montreal Canadiens prospect to leave Wisconsin for an?extended stay in Sweden. As of now, he''s sticking with the Badgers.?
Marc Staal - Traded from the Rangers to the Red Wings along with a second round draft pick in 2021 in exchange for future considerations. This was a cap clearing move by the Rangers, but it''s to be determined if Staal will play for the Red Wings or have his contract bought out.?

Nearly 140,000 of you wanted to know more about Mitchell Miller last week.

Our Editor-in-Chief, JD Burke shared this summer why Miller - a projected third or fourth round selection - was not only dropped from our Top 124, but added to our Do Not Draft list in this article on EPRinkside. Arizona ended up selecting the 18-year-old with thier first pick of the 2020 NHL Draft, which was 111th overall in the fourth round despite the widespread reports of abuse to a mentally disabled classmate when Miller was 14.

When the victim''s mother publicly asked why they would want someone like that in their organization, the Coyotes originally stated that they champion diversity and inclusion and were the perfect organization to help guide Miller on his path to being not only a better hockey player, but a better person as well. The University of North Dakota, where he is a freshman, said the same thing. Upon further investigation of the facts of the situation and an apparent lack of remorse by Mitchell, the Coyotes have released him of his NHL rights and North Dakota has removed him from the hockey team, but will allow him to remain as a student, if he so chooses.?

It was a hot topic on this week''s episode of the EliteProspects Podcast with Craig Button and JD Burke.?

What happens next for his hockey career is still to be determined, but there are rumblings that he will sign with a team in the KHL.

Mitchell Miller?
Connor Bedard - The barely 15-year-old is lighting the Swedish junior leagues on fire. When the season started, HV71 announced that he would be training with them until the WHL season got under way. Two weeks ago, the WHL announced that their season would not begin until January and gave players permission to play in other leagues until?training camps opened. Since then the top prospect for the 2023 NHL Draft has played one game for the U18 team, notching a goal and an assist, and four for the U20 team, earning two goals and two assists, including this game winner late in the?third periond on Wednesday.?
Patrik Karlkvist - Last season, he scored 30 goals and 38 assists for MODO of the Allsvenskan and was also one of the league leaders. In March, he signed with Sport of the Liiga, but after going pointless in eight games, the two mututally agreed to part ways on Friday. Saturday morning MODO started an online fundraiser to pay the 28-year-old''s?salary as Swedish teams are bleeding money without revenue from ticket sales. They set a goal of $500,000 SEK (roughly $50,000 USD) and, as of this morning, they were just 20,000 SEK away, which includes donations from Emil Forsberg, a Swedish football star, and NHL and MODO legend Peter Forsberg. Karlkvist''s signing is imminent.?
Marco Rossi - The recent first round selection by the Minnesota Wild was loaned to Zurich of the National League in Switzerland last week. The 18-year-old Austrian earned an assist in his first game.
Mark Ledlin - The 22-year-old, who grew up in British Columbia, but was born in Germany and currently plays in thier second tier league, was on The Voice of?Germany. Listen to his?interview on Sportsnet650.
Shane Wright - Hockey?Canada announced their?month long training camp for the 2021 World Junior Championship will start November 16th and the 16-year-old OHL Rookie of the Year and projected first overall selection for the 2022 NHL Draft was named to the 46-man roster.?
Alex Galchenyuk - The 26-year-old signed a one year deal with the Ottawa Senators.?
Lucas Raymond - The 18-year-old drafted fourth overall by the Detroit Red Wings is still lighting it up in the SHL for Frolunda with five goals and two assists for seven points in 13 games. He will join the Swedish National Junior Team this week to train for the 2021 WJC with three games against Finland.?
Elias Pettersson - He was a guest last week on Spittin'' Chiclets.?
Martin Kaut?- The former first round selection by the Colorado Avalanche was loaned to MODO of the Allsvenskan. He played his first game on Friday and earned a goal and an assist in his second game with the team on Sunday.?

Grading the 2020 NHL Draft

Our Editor-in-Chief JD Burke took a look at every team''s haul with a priority on draft value (a prospect''s talent relative to where they were selected) and shared his thoughts on which teams took a big step forward and which ones missed the opportunity to do so.

Of course, the draft is an exercise in projection and we can''t accurately grade this draft for at least another five years, but there''s definiely room for some immediate reactions regarding the prospects in this draft class.?

The World Youth Championships (formerly the WSI Philadelphia) is proud to be returning for a consecutive 7th?year this May. Hosting the top '06, '05, and '04 birth year players, the WYC is the top U15 event in the US. The tournament will take place on May 1st?through May 5th?outside of Philadelphia (Voorhees NJ, Sewell NJ, and Aston PA). Games are hosted at the Virtua Health Flyers Skate Zone (the home of Philadelphia Flyers), Hollydell Ice Arena (Home of Johnny Gaudreau), and Ice Works (Home of the Philadelphia Little Flyers). Brought to you by the same team that founded and operated the WSI Philly for the last 6 years, Play Hockey is the official organizer to spearhead this event.?

Raymond As Good As Advertised

When we ranked Lucas Raymond #3 on our draft board, more than a few people thought our scouts needed to take thier Swedish colored glasses off. Nevermind the fact that we only have one Swedish scout.?

We made our case in the articles below and stood behind our assessment and, fortunately for us, Raymond has been on absolute fire during the pre-season, earning four goals and two assists in five games with Frolunda. Changing of the Guard

We have a new Stanley Cup Champion and, within the next 48 hours, we''ll have a new crop of prospects officially in the NHL pipeline after the NHL Draft. On Friday, many UFAs will find a new home for next season as free agency opens up. Along with that, some players are not having contracts renewed, being traded or bought out or retiring.?

Change is happening throughout the NHL and it''s all reflected in today''s Top Ten list.

TOP TEN MOST VIEWED PROFILES LAST WEEK
?

Victor Hedman - The former second overall pick in the NHL Draft needs to make some room in his trophy case after helping the Tampa Bay Lightning win te Stanley Cup and earning the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff MVP along the way. He also won the Norris trophy as the NHL''s best defenseman two years ago and has five IIHF medals including gold from the men''s world championship in 2017.
Henrik Lundqvist?- After 15 seasons on Broadway, the New York Rangers bought out the final year of his contract. No doubt he''ll be looking to land with a Stanley Cup contender to get the last piece to his Triple Crown.
Pat Maroon?- The Big Rig won back-to-back Stanley Cups and is reaching legendary status for his celebration swagger.?
Steven Stamkos - The Tampa Bay Lightning captain has been out with an injury since February, had?core muscle surgery in March, aggrivated it?during the summer training camp and was "unfit to play" in the Stanley Cup playoffs until Game 3 of the Final against Dallas. He played five shifts for a total of 2:47 before leaving again after aggrivating his injury, but scored a quintessentially Stamkos goal to help his team win the game 5-2. He didn''t play the rest of the series, but was on the ice to accept the Stanley Cup.?

Bobby Nardella - Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame a year-and-a-half ago by Washington, the Capitals have loaned him to Djurgarden of the SHL.?
Chris Stewart - After 13 seasons, 668 NHL games, 160 goals and 162 assists for seven NHL teams and two stints in Europe,?the?32-year-old former first round pick by the Colorado Avalance officially retired last week.?
Alexis Lafreniere - With the first overall selection in the 2020 NHL Draft the New York Rangers select...

Cole Caufield Doing Cole Caufield Things for Wisconsin

It took him a few games, but the floodgates finally opened for Cole Caufield. After a string of assists in the first four games of the season, the 19-year-old scored four last week against Penn State, including a hat trick on Tuesday in Wisconsin''s 7-3 win.?

The Montreal Canadien''s first round selection in 2019 was also named to Team USA''s preliminary roster for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. He''s one of ten returning players on the team.?

Alexander Lindelof - The 24-year-old defenseman transferred from Surahammars of HockeyEttan to Vita Hasten of Allsvenskan.
Fabian Lysell - The 17-year-old, who is a top prospect for the 2021 NHL Draft and could be part of Team Sweden at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship,?had 13 points in 11 games with Frolunda''s U20 team before the league was suspended and?has been transferred to Lulea of the SHL.
Oskar Olausson - The just-turned-18-year-old was impressive with?HV71''s U20 squad - 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 16 games - and?likely earned a spot on Sweden''s preliminary roster for the WJC, in the process. Scoring three games in a row last week for HV71''s senior team in the SHL didn''t hurt either.??
Owen Power - Another just-turned-18-year-old that''s a top prospect for te 2021 NHL Draft. He went without a point against Notre Dame this weekend, but continues to have?a strong showing. He''s got four points in six games for Michigan.?

Move Over Lafreniere...

In March, it was announced that Connor Bedard would be the first player to receive exceptional status to play in the Western Hockey League as a 15-year-old this fall. With the delay in the start of the WHL season, his agency - Newport Sports - leveraged their connections to find a temporary home for the top prospect for the 2023 NHL Draft to continue his development.

After much speculation, it was announced last Monday that the Regina Pats, who drafted him 1st overall in the WHL Draft this spring, have given him permission to train with HV71''s junior squad in Sweden. It''s still to be determined if he will be allowed to play in games for their U18 or U20 teams, but he''ll at least be able to practice and train with them until the WHL resumes play.?

Meanwhile, Matvei Michkov, also 15 and a top prospect for the 2023 NHL Draft, is tearing up the Russian junior league with seven goals and three assists in eight games so far this season.?

We are very happy to announce that as of today?eliteprospects.com?features extended goaltending stats. This means that our stats tracking for goalies have gone from only including GP, GAA and SVS%, to also include GD (Games Dressed), GA, SVS, SO, W, L, T and TOI (time on ice).?

For the last year we have been adding the previously missing data and we are now comfortable with publishing it. This investment in time and resources has been made possible thanks to our dedicated database staff as well as all of you that support us with an EP Premium account. For that very reason, these new columns will be behind our Premium wall until September 1, then available for free for everyone. Like it should be.

Uncovering Hidden Gems

On average, there are two Hockey Hall of Fame players in every NHL Draft. While the odds of drafting one of those players is slim, there are still many exceptional players to uncover in every draft class and every team prides themselves on finding those hidden gems, especially in the later rounds.?

This year, one of those players could be Bear Hughes of the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL. At 16, he was playing rec league hockey near his hometown in Idaho. At 17, he found a spot with the Spokane Braves of the KIJHL and amassed 66 points (41 goals and 25 assists) in 46 games. At 18, he tried out for the Spokane Chiefs, made the team, earned 47 points in 61 games, was named thier Rookie of the Year and found himself on Central Scouting''s watchlist for the 2020 NHL Draft.

Finding guys like him - the late bloomers with loads of potential to develop into an everyday NHL player - are how scouts stay employed because not only are they often integral to a team''s success in pursuing the Stanley Cup...but also to managing thier salary cap!

The music hasn''t stopped on NHL Free Agency, which started last Friday, but several notable players have already found thier seat and it''s no surprise this week''s Top Ten Most Viewed Profiles is filled with players with a new place to call home... at least for a little while!

Patrick Marleau - Another long-time NHL veteran sigining a league minimum contract to return to San Jose...again.?
Tyler Toffoli - The NHL salary cap was expected to increase by $7-8 million, but the revenue shortage due to the pandemic means a flat cap for the next three seasons and, one could argue, that no team felt that cruch more than the Vancouver Canucks. Jimmy Vesey - After underperforming during his last contract, the 27-year-old?found a seat in Toronto?for just over league minimum.?
Nate Schmidt - When Vancouver struggled to re-sign their notable free agents, GM. Jim Benning needed to do something, especially on the blueline, or else risk a complete revolt from thier fan base. So, he offered a "chair" to the 29-year-old after Vegas opted for Alex Pietrangelo.?
Alexis Lafreniere - The Rangers signed thier first overall draft pick to an entry level contract this week.
Devon Toews - Due for a new contract as a restricted free agent, the Islanders traded his rights to Colorado in exchange for two second round draft picks.?
Alex Pietroangelo?- He wanted to stay in St Louis, but the feeling wasn''t mutual - or at least not at the price and term?he wanted - so he dipped his toes into the free agency waters and Vegas jumped in to offer seven years at $8.8 million per.?
Dominik Bokk - The 20-year-old German?was supposed to come to North America this year, but with the delay to the NHL season, he was loaned to Krefeld of the DEL. When they pushed thier season back again and announced they wouldn''t?start until December, it was time to find him a new home for a few months. Djurgarden of the SHL offered him a seat.?
