Dear Jacob,
We are delighted to present the Spring offering of our 2017 Eisele Vineyard ‘Altagracia’ Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018 Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc and freshly pressed 2019 Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Considering the 2017 vintage, it is naturally difficult to overlook the aftermath of the growing season, and the fires that tragically impacted our region. The first fires started on Tubbs Lane in Calistoga, just a few miles from the estate, during the night of Sunday, October 8th. Looking back on the progression of fires during that first night, covering the 15 miles separating us from Santa Rosa in less than 3 hours, we realized that a simple change in the direction of the winds could wipe us out without much time to react. This humbling realization permanently changed our perception of the fragility of what we have, and it is with a feeling of happenstance that we look back on these moments. Many were not so lucky.
From a purely technical standpoint, the 2017 vintage was unaffected, as our typically early site was harvested before the fires. The preventive power shutdown policy that we have experienced in 2018 and 2019 was not in place at that time. Since we did not lose power, the cellar was able to operate normally, and the wines continued their course undisturbed…
Even before these events, 2017 was an intense growing season. The pressure of the climate, especially in June and later in September, was relentless. The first heat wave caused our berries to be unusually small, at 0.7 grams. The quality of our deep soils and the creativity of our vineyard team helped mitigate the effects of temperatures, allowing us to bring a healthy but very small crop to the cellar (down 35% from 2016). The elevage revealed wines with great concentration, freshness and pleasure, a happy conclusion for the vintage, bottled with a message of resilience and hope.
The 2017 Altagracia, made from the Eastern blocks of Eisele Vineyard, will always bring about all sorts of memories, but it is a very approachable and smiling expression of this terroir.
The 2018 Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is true to character, displaying its usual fragrance, followed by great vibrancy and creaminess. It reflects the grace of a 2018 growing season that was very easy in comparison.
The 2019 Olive Oil is back to a normal level of production after untimely rains at the time of flowering severely impacted yields in 2018. As always, our Olive Oil is extra-virgin and certified organic. It was freshly bottled on January 21st.
All of us at the Eisele Vineyard are grateful for your patronage. We trust you will find great pleasure in this offering.

Sincerely,

Antoine Donnedieu
