ADDITIONAL TICKETS RELEASED FOR
FESTIVE DAY OUT WITH THOMAS™

We're delighted to advise that, due to popular demand, we have been able to release a limited number of additional tickets for our Festive Day Out with Thomas Event on 14, 15, 21 and 22 December.

Guests can take unlimited rides behind Thomas The Tank Engine and meet the Fat Controller who will keeping a close eye on proceedings. Sodor Station Sweepers, Rusty and Dusty have also made the journey to Didcot and will be busy entertaining visitors!

A second steam train will take everybody to meet Father Christmas in a wonderfully decorated festive station and he has a present for every child.

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE
WHO'D LIKE TO DRIVE A STEAM TRAIN?

Then, why not buy them a certificate for one of our unforgettable Railway Experience Days?

The certificates are valid throughout 2020 allowing recipients to pick an available date that suits them.

One the day they will take the controls of a full-size locomotive at the head of a private passenger train and steam up and down the Centre's main demonstration line under the supervision of our expert supervisors.

This memorable day also includes time with the guard, a visit to the signal box and a guided tour of the Centre with breakfast and lunch provided.

FOOTPLATE TASTER & VIP DAY

Climbing into the cab alongside the driver and fireman for a trip along the Centre's main demonstration line is just one part of this very special day.

Participants are also treated to an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Centre with an experienced guide, who will show them areas that are not normally open to the public.

VIP Days run on most weekends and many Wednesdays in 2020. They make ideal Christmas gifts and can be purchased as a certificate, allowing the recipient to choose from the dates available.

Come along on 27, 28, 29, 30 or 31 December and explore the Centre at your leisure on our Winter Exhibition Days. There's plenty to see undercover in the locomotive shed, historic carriage display, signalling centre and Science of Railways carriages plus hot drinks and lunches in the cosy refreshment rooms.

News and Events

DELIVERING THE GOODS
15 & 16 FEBRUARY 2020

Kick starting our 2020 season, we invite you to our Delivering The Goods weekend to enjoy a special demonstration of freight trains and wagon movements that recall those days when goods traffic was more important to the railways than passengers.

Visiting locomotive No. 31 "Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons" is making its first working visit away from Fawley Hill and will provide a rare opportunity for visitors to see wagons being worked up the steep incline to the Centre's coal stage.

The second steam locomotive in action will be GWR "Prairie Tank" No 4144 - a large and powerful tank engine built at the Great Western Railway's famous Swindon Locomotive Works in 1946.

Diesel locomotives D9516 and 08604 will also be running and shunting during the event.

Visitors will also be able to see "William Street Yard" - a working model layout of a goods yard that featured in the grand final of Channel 5's Great Model Railway Challenge.

HALF TERM STEAM DAYS
19, 22 & 23 FEBRUARY 2020

Come and enjoy our Steam Days at Didcot Railway Centre during February Half-Term. Trains will be running on Wednesday 19 February and over the weekend of 22 & 23 February.

See our collections of engines, carriages and wagons and ride in our 1930s coaches on the Centre's two demonstration lines. Trains will be running on both of them from 10.30am offering unlimited rides.

Children can dress up as a station master or guard in our Welford Park Ticket Office and can watch the trains from the train-themed play park in our picnic area. You will have plenty of opportunity to take photos from vantage points alongside the tracks as well from the running coaches.

New for 2020 - If you book online, you can now save 10% on the ticket prices.

COSTUMED INTERPRETERS
VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

Join our volunteer team and become one of our Costumed Interpreters and help bring the golden age of the Great Western Railway alive!

As part of our 2020 calendar of open days and special events, we would like as many people as possible to be dressed in period style clothing and tell the story of the railways. You could come dressed as an engine driver, signalman or passenger. With our Victorian broad gauge track, 1932 engine shed and station platforms, there are plenty of opportunities to bring history alive.

Not only will you make lots of new friends but volunteering in such a role can help with your CV.

There will be a meeting at the Centre on Saturday 1 February at 11:00am if you would like to find out more and get involved.

About Didcot Railway Centre

Explore this 21-acre living museum and unearth almost two centuries of railway history. Stroll through the original 1932 engine shed and see magnificent preserved locomotives - you can even climb onto the footplates of some! See surviving track from Brunel's broad gauge, discover painstakingly restored buildings, coaches and wagons and learn more about the development of the railways and how they changed everyday lives.

There's a chance to get hands-on in the Science of Railways carriages and in the signalling centre where you can find out how trains have been controlled through the ages. Descend into a shelter built to keep Didcot's enginemen safe in WWII and experience an air raid or immerse yourself in the varied collection of fascinating, smaller artefacts in the museum.

Children can let off steam in the outdoor play area, make tracks to the indoor toy train sets or dress up as a Station Master. You can relax over lunch or enjoy a snack in the refreshment rooms and don't forget to pick up a souvenir in the gift shop. The modern trains running past the centre complete the picture and mean you can experience 180 years of railway progress in just one day!

RE-OPENING RETURN TICKETS

The prolonged, enforced closure to help combat Covid-19 has cut off our income from visitors, income we rely as a Charity to maintain and conserve our unique collection - we're now asking you to help us by planning a visit for when we re-open!

?

As a 21-acre open-air living museum we believe that we will be able to safely welcome visitors back later this summer and our special "Return Tickets" give you two opportunities to explore the almost 200 years of railway history we have on site.

?

The tickets give you access to an Open-Air Discovery Day when we are able to get back to welcoming visitors, so you can enjoy a few hours exploring and photographing the many outdoor exhibits, including historic steam engines, goods trains and locomotive turntable. You can also get up close to the locomotives in the spacious Engine Shed which has remained largely-unchanged since it was built in 1932.

Your "Return Ticket" will also be valid at one of our popular Steam Days when we are able to resume running trains and are the same price as standard Steam Day admission - so you get two visits for the price of one!

The Society's first locomotive, GWR 0-4-2T No 1466, is scheduled to return to steam as part of the celebrations but with no visitor income as a result of the coronavirus outbreak,?

Two Remarkable Survivors For Bank Holiday Steam Up?

Our first special event since lockdown is the Bank Holiday Steam Up on 29, 30 and 31 August. Featuring GWR express passenger engines 2999 'Lady of Legend' and 6023 'King Edward II'. Read the fascinating stories of the two locomotives here.

Visitors to the event will be able to take unlimited train rides, watch the engines being turned on the 70ft turntable, see loco coaling, shunting demonstrations with a 1950s diesel engine and historic wagons, visit the Victorian broad gauge exhibition, walk through the display of vintage carriages and much more.

Dates Announced For September Steam Days?

?

We are pleased to confirm that our Summer Steam Days will continue at weekends and Wednesdays through September.

?

We will need to keep the limits on the number of visitors each day and stagger arrival times to enable social distancing so advance booking will continue to be necessary.

?

One of three unique locomotives will be in action each day we're open, so you are in for a real treat whenever you visit!?

?

On 5, 6, 12 and 13 September, the iconic "Blue King" No. 6023 "King Edward II" is scheduled to be working trains providing a last chance to see this powerful engine in action before its current boiler certificate expires.

?

The graceful Edwardian-designed No. 2999 "Lady of Legend" is due to work on Wednesdays 2 and 9 September and will then share duties for the remainder of the month with the 108-year-old Steam Railmotor No 93 - the only surviving vehicle of its type. We will be facilitating social distancing on the platform and trains so you can enjoy unlimited rides on the demonstration line.

WE'RE STEAMING AGAIN
Advance booking essential

We are delighted to be able to resume running steam trains, allowing visitors to enjoy unlimited rides behind one of the Great Western Railway's famous express locomotives.

?

At weekends and Wednesdays from Saturday 18 July, the award-winning No. 2999 "Lady of Legend" will be in action hauling Edwardian carriages with individual compartments so every group can have their own exclusive space for the ride on our demonstration line.

?

As well as the trains, there's almost 200 years of railway heritage to explore across the 21-acre site.

?

Numbers are limited with staggered arrival times to ensure there's plenty of space for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves.
