barnes says hey.
hello ever body. hope you are all as well and happy as can be expected, and so forth. it''s not my place to comment on all that external stuff and i''m not qualified to discuss politics, the only thing i''m qualified to discuss is what i''ve been making.
we put out this record called man on fire with a bunch of my friends on it in march. the pandemic came out the same week and so that kinda got all the press. nonetheless, i put a couple years of work into the record and feel like you might want to give it a listen. the problem is, like all of my records you kinda gotta hear it about three complete times to get into the movie as it were. {hey i got a song called enemy factory on the radio so my work here is kinda done! ha!} them guys that are them old time chart topping guys, they knew how to grab you on the first listen and i''ve never mastered that obviously.
i have some of them delicious green vinyl ones here. here is a video we done of one of the songs. it''s on all your streaming things, and what have you of as well. my sincere hope is it will lift up your day and make you feel like i feel when hearing stuff i''m really into. sometimes music can do that thing...where you feel kinda free and happy. perhaps silly and sad at the same time and all that stuff.
another thing i been doing, a few years ago i got hurt playing a show by being blasted with a super loud sound in my right ear while close to a speaker. thought i was going deaf and lost a bunch of hearing, and was completely deaf in my right ear for a couple months. i was pretty bummed for a bout a year or so {it''s been about three years now}. but started drawing {never having done it really} and making little comic books and stuff kinda punk rock zine style. all freehand and uneven and primary colors haha. so i''ve been drawing like crazy and having fun with that and learning about that. a couple bands ordered t-shirt designs, and i provided illustrations for a band video, a few commissions came in, and people buy quite a bit of my original art stuff on my etsy page here. i can still make records and play pretty good. i bought these really far out hearing aids that are like the six million dollar man style. nonetheless i''ve been making a lot of graphic art, illustrations and so forth. so in a sense, without traveling i can create things almost 100% of my work life, rather than create less than 5% of my work life. that''s kind of encouraging. don''t worry there''s a LOT of banjo playing and songs to go.
so my day is: get up super early and hit the beach at sunrise with my dog, then feed him and make coffee and put on some really great music i''m trying to understand, and let that loop for about four hours while i draw whatever comes to mind and study the music with my other non-physical part of my being. then have some lunch, and start picking the banjo. work on office stuff and pick. then go to the park with my dog. and that''s my day.
as far as live shows, no one really knows how that''s going to shake out. at first there were lots of folks making videos and i didn''t really do much in that arena. i''m thinking about kind of making my soundcloud page a place to put up deep cuts for free. and maybe make my contribution to stuff be new music that i put on there. here''s something from there.
i wrote this book that is a translation of the book of genesis into southern speak. i recorded the first few chapters with abstract banjo accompaniment. there''s lots of other unheard music that could be up there. if you guys enjoy that and listen i''ll put stuff up there. that app is okay and all that.
speaking of unheard music, most of the time when i talk to someone that knows my stuff, almost invariably there is a huge chunk they DON''T know or haven''t heard. which is understandable, there''s too much to even consider in a sense. and counting all the live videos on corporate tube, there''s more stuff already out there than would be possible to consume. if you need any help finding things email me haha.
here is a brand new band liver track.
i have a little system for learning the five string banjo called banjonics. it''s as complete a system as i can make in that we study banjo from a musical perspective not only a genre based one. a lot of the concepts are presented in comic book form so you have that to look forward to ha! if you want to learn how to pick the banjo better, i think i can probably help.
that''s all for now. all the love to you. if you don''t know anyone sick it may seem like a far off dream, but if you start losing family members you might have a different take on it, so the best thing is, stay safe!
