CIM Artist-in-Residence and Pianist Sergei Babayan Releases First Solo Album for Deutsche Grammophon
Sergei Babayan, member of the CIM piano faculty and Artist-in-Residence since 1992, says his first solo disc on the legendary Deutsche Grammophon (DG) label simply had to contain repertoire from Sergei Rachmaninoff. Aptly titled “Rachmaninoff,” the album – released today – is a love letter from Babayan to his inspiration, the composer, conductor and virtuoso pianist who influenced the Armenian-born Babayan from an early age. “Rachmaninoff is one of my gods,” said Babayan, adding that this recording is very important to him because the music of Rachmaninoff “was the reason why I became a pianist.” He also has dedicated the album to his beloved teacher – Georgiy Saradjev – who assigned to Babayan his first Rachmaninoff pieces. “I remember him choosing for me Études-Tableaux from opuses 33 and 39,” Babayan said. “Later on he accompanied me, playing the orchestral reduction of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto in my graduation exam from the Tchaikovsky Special Music School in Armenia where I studied with him during those years.” The album presents a selection of works including Études-Tableaux, Preludes, Moments Musicaux and song transcriptions. Babayan explained that when he played these pieces years ago, he certainly didn’t have a CD project in mind, but the narrative sequence and structure of the program took shape through repeated performances on stage. “Repertoire selection is a long, sometimes painful, but very creative and gratifying process,” he said. “Some composers stay with you for the rest of your life. It is like finding your friends for a lifetime. The music of Rachmaninoff is going to be with me until my last days. It is enlightening to look back and observe how my life and source of inspiration for the given moment could mean so much for the choice of repertoire. I never get tired of it. This music has remained for me a source of eternal spring – some kind of force of renewal and hope.” Deutsche Grammophon, arguably the oldest and most renowned classical record label in the world, lauds Babayan’s solo DG debut as “a heartfelt dedication of love for Rachmaninoff’s music in all its many colors and moods.” Born into a musical family, Babayan began his studies in Armenia with Saradjev and Luiza Markaryan, and continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev, Vera Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Following his first trip outside the former Soviet Union in 1989, he won consecutive first prizes in several major competitions, including the Cleveland International Piano Competition, the Hamamatsu Piano Competition and the Scottish International Piano Competition. Babayan’s engagements and tours have taken him to such prominent international concert venues as Carnegie Hall, Severance Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, the Théâtre des Champs-Elyseés in Paris, Herkulessaal in Munich, Barbican and Wigmore Halls in London, Rudolfinum-Dvorak Hall in Prague, and Victoria Hall in Geneva. He appeared at the Salzburg Fesival, Verbier Festival, and Festival International de Piano de La Roque d’Anthéron, among others. He also has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, among them the London Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, Gewandhaus orchestra in Leipzig, Bamberg Symphony, the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Rotterdam Philharmonic and NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in Hamburg. Babayan performed two Prokofiev concertos at BBC Proms with Valery Gergiev and London Symphony Orchestra in Royal Albert Hall in 2015. Babayan signed an exclusive recording contract with DG in July 2018. His first album for the label – “Prokofiev for Two,” released in March 2018 – is a duo partnership with the legendary Martha Argerich, and is comprised of Babayan’s own transcriptions for two pianos of movements from Sergei Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” and other works. In November 2019 Babayan was a curating artist at Konzerthaus Dortmund, where he presented a festival of performances with close musical friends, including Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Sergey Khachatryan and CIM alumnus and his former student Daniil Trifonov (AC ’13, AD ’15). For purchase, streaming or download information of “Rachmaninoff,” visit DG’s website.

CIM Recruits Artistically Celebrated, Academically Accomplished, Racially Diverse Incoming Class Five student musicians receive newly funded, coveted full-ride scholarships
With an eye on the return to in-person classes August 10, the Cleveland Institute of Music has attracted to its storied halls and to Cleveland an incoming class rich in artistic achievement, academic distinction and racial diversity. CIM exceeded its incoming class goal by 10% and has seated 131 of the world’s most talented classical music students for fall 2020 – 12% of whom identify as Black or Latinx – including the school’s top recruits in trumpet, bassoon, percussion, horn, collaborative piano, double bass, violin and viola. Announced in early June, the fall 2020 semester will begin, in person, on Monday, August 10, and on-campus instruction will conclude on Friday, November 20. Recognizing elite ability and skillfulness, CIM awarded a record five full-ride packages to members of the incoming class, the result of incredible generosity by CIM’s donors and a decade-long partnership with Cleveland-based Judson Senior Living. Practically speaking, every member of the incoming class received a philanthropy-supported scholarship. The award packages include tuition, room, board and fees, and allow recipients to focus exclusively on learning and performing while they are students – without the pressure of accumulating major debt after graduating. The five newest scholars are:
“A century ago, when the women of the Fortnightly Musical Club pooled their wealth and conceived CIM, it was a bold, courageous and heroic choice,” said CIM President and CEO Paul W. Hogle. “They set out into the unknown, and it was impossible for them to know their enduring legacy in creating a top-tier music conservatory and the preparatory programs which quickly followed. Today, we compete fiercely for the world’s most advanced student musicians and, with our newest full-ride scholarships, we’re enabling five outstanding student artists to pursue their dreams. We are working tirelessly to ensure that a coveted Cleveland education remains affordable so that students can study with our venerable faculty as they prepare to be the future of classical music.” About the class The incoming class is one of artistic distinction, academic ability, racial diversity and geographic reach. They include competition prizewinners, alumni of premier music festivals and the country’s finest youth orchestras and possess an entrepreneurial spirit as founders or co-founders of their own organizations and businesses. Musical accomplishments of the class include:

CIM Announces 2021 Virtual Audition Days Bold decision eliminates application and audition barriers to venerable institution

When its worldwide application portal goes live at midnight on September 1, 2020, the Cleveland Institute of Music will create the most accessible pathway to conservatory admittance in 2021. Students auditioning for CIM will present their recorded auditions in a live, online meeting with the faculty for their area of study. “With today’s announcement, CIM proudly lowers the barrier to access for a classical music student to earn a coveted spot in the highly competitive fall 2021 class,” observed CIM President & CEO Paul W. Hogle. “We were reminded during the pandemic that digital access is a powerful tool in the training of the world’s most talented classical music students. By making this announcement early — that auditions will be entirely via recorded and digital technologies — we have removed some of the geographic and travel-related obstacles that lead to difficult family decisions with permanent career implications.” CIM’s in-person audition days have been praised by parents and prospective students alike and the 2021 virtual audition days will artfully replicate that experience. As usual, students and families will participate in auditions on the four Sundays of February. Each day will include a family orientation meeting, student lounge, a eurhythmics demonstration, and opportunities to talk with CIM’s financial aid, registrar and entrepreneurial musicianship leaders. The centerpiece of the audition experience for students will be a live, real-time interaction with the faculty in their area of study as faculty listen, along with the auditioning student, to the applicant''s recorded audition. Every applicant will also interview with a member of CIM’s senior administration. "We understand the highly coveted and highly valuable nature of a CIM education,” adds Jerrod Price, CIM’s executive director of preparatory, enrollment & pathway programs. “By blending recorded auditions with live conversations, students and faculty will have the meaningful and interactive audition experience that is the hallmark of a CIM audition day. The new format should allow students to really shine, without the stress and financial strain that auditions typically bring. Every student artist who dreams about being the future of classical music can now have unfettered access to that opportunity.” Cleveland’s incoming 2020 class exceeded enrollment goals by 10% and is one of impeccable artistic distinction, academic ability, racial diversity and geographic reach. With 12% identifying as Black or Latinx, it includes competition prizewinners and alumni of premier music festivals and the country’s finest youth orchestras, and possesses an entrepreneurial spirit as founders or co-founders of their own organizations and businesses. Recognizing elite ability and skillfulness, CIM awarded a record five full-ride packages to members of the incoming class, the result of incredible generosity by CIM’s donors and a partnership with Cleveland-based Judson Senior Living. Practically speaking, every member of the incoming class received a philanthropy-supported scholarship. Qualified classical music students seeking bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees, as well as professional studies and artist diplomas, are invited to apply at cim.edu/apply. Key dates:
