Hi Contessas,
Show me a person who likes phone interviews, and I''ll Venmo you $20.
Okay, not really (I don''t know your account name, so how could I?).
But the point is: there''s nothing easy about getting on a call where you can''t see the other person''s facial expressions or physical cues, then trying to remind yourself to talk slowly, all while worrying about background noises-I could go on.
Unfortunately, phone interviewing is also where every job opportunity starts. So, how do you make them easier?
Here are the best phone interview tips we''ve collected from professional recruiters and, of course, the internet that can help you impress and get yourself to the next interview round.

Hi Contessas,
If you want to learn a thing or two about emotional resilience, just talk to entrepreneur Ash Ambirge, creator of The Middle Finger Project.
She's been looked down on because she grew up in a trailer park. She's been fired from jobs she worked hard to land. She's had her heart broken and her savings stolen on the same day. She's spent more than a few nights sleeping in her car. Yet even after all that, she's still standing.
Ash may not have born into an easy life of uninterrupted success, but she has always bounced back. You might even say she's bounced forward.
"The act of contributing meaningfully requires you to step out," she says. "Your every weakness will be on display, but so will your courage."
That's the essence of emotional resilience: the ability to experience something stressful without letting it destroy your resolve, sense of purpose, or hopes for the future.
It's more than just keeping calm and carrying on.
Being emotionally resilient means that you can acknowledge and metabolize negative feelings instead of locking them away or being overwhelmed by them. When an emotionally resilient person wears a brave face, there's genuine bravery and optimism behind it.
So what can you do to strengthen your emotional resilience muscles? Click below to learn some research-backed practices you can try this week.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN
For over six years, Career Contessa has been guiding people towards more fulfilling careers supported by a thriving community. Prior to launching Career Contessa, I was a recruiter at Hulu where I learned exactly what it takes to stand out in today''s crowded job market.
That''s also where I picked up my obsession with career development and, specifically, saw that women do experience a unique workplace dynamic. From the "soft" skills to the hard skills, navigating work is challenging.
Career Contessa is the resource I wish I had had access to and it''s the resource that can provide you clarity, give you access to data and information that''s not always easy to find, make the journey feel less lonely, and offer you the support you want and deserve.

Hi Contessas,
"Don't be so sensitive."
We''re bothered by that sentence. If you're an empathetic person, you've probably been told you're too sensitive or emotional at some point in your life. (Or, many, many times in your life.)
Empathy is the ability to
sense and understand (at some level) other people's emotions. Sometimes it can feel empathy is a real weakness.
But empathy, in the workplace especially, is a strength.
It's empathy that allows someone to intuitively sense a customer's problem and immediately suggest solutions. It's empathy that recognizes the stress in a coworker's response to a "to-do" timeline, that allows that person to find a compromise in scheduling.
It's empathy that allows us to work closely with other women to help tell their stories, to have a collaborative editing process rather than a frustrating one.
Empathy is a crucial soft skill in work and in everyday life and learning how to implement a more empathetic workplace-no matter where you work- is a valuable skill.
That''s why we''re sharing seven unique ways you can incorporate empathy at work-and embrace being an empathetic person!

Hi Contessas,
Always be learning. Isn't that what we're told will help us stay sharp and advance in our careers?
But with everything else on our to-do list, like networking, self-care, exercising, and working toward that next promotion (just to name a few things), how are we supposed to find time to learn new skills and expand our expertise?
The key lies in microlearning.
Microlearning is a learning approach where you consume smaller amounts of information over a shorter period of time. This type of skills training takes the essential parts of a concept or an idea and teaches it in highly-focused and bite-sized nuggets.
Microlearning is shorter and faster than traditional learning because it's focused on conciseness.
These short bursts of content are available for learners to consume at their own convenience. The style of the information delivered can take many forms, but the main principle is that it's short. And we like short since we''re all pressed for time!
Click below to learn more about microlearning, the different types, and how you can infuse it into your regular schedule.

Hi Contessas,
I want this week''s newsletter to give you what your expect from us-weekly career advice you can put into action-but I also want to use this platform to share another thing you expect from us-to stand in solidarity with the Black community against racism, hate, and injustice.
I want to talk about racism because silence is not an option. Being an ally does not mean being "not racist"-it means being actively antiracist.
As a white woman running Career Contessa, it's important for me to acknowledge my privilege, take action, educate myself on an ongoing basis, support, and be in service of Black liberation.
Not using this platform to take action is condoning racism, systematic oppression, and brutality of Black people.
If you are a white or non-Black person, I hope you are doing the same and asking your communities to start talking about their white privilege and the actions they will take to be antiracist.
Here are some places to start:
@lisaoliveratherapy has some journal prompts that can get the conversation started
@courtneyahndesign also created a guide to white privilege
Girls Night In created this antiracism resource roundup
Listen to this episode on how to navigate power and privilege at work
Our humanity calls on us to act and, through Career Contessa, we will donate to nonprofit organizations that fight racial inequality, create resources that teach non-Black people how to apply their privilege to be an antiracist ally at work and life, and continue to educate ourselves. Take action. Join us.
On the career front, we''re officially halfway through 2020 and while it might feel like this year has been "canceled," it definitely has not. You and your career development in 2020 are still in-progress.
To help, we''re sharing 5 books that can help boost your career confidence-a skill that is used in all part of your career and life. More confidence?! Yes, we''ll take more of that in 2020!
BUILD YOUR CAREER CONFIDENCE

Hi Contessas,
We are pausing our scheduled programming this week as we donate, walk with, take action with, and stand in solidarity with the Black community in the fight against racism.
We will continue to listen, learn, amplify, and do the work.
There are many organizations working nonstop to address the social and racial injustices facing Black people across America with ways we can all fight this fight today and every day.
Additionally, there is support for the Black community from resources focused on mental health, affirmation, and healing.
This newsletter is dedicated to amplifying and sharing some of these resources and organizations:
ACLU
Black Lives Matter: What You Can Do to Help Resource List
Black Visions Collective
Campaign Zero
Color of Change
The Loveland Foundation
NAACP
Executive Allyship Training from Say Space
BlackLine
Therapy for Black Girls
Healing from the Effects of Internalized Oppression
200+ Black-owned DEI Companies Open to New Business
Career Contessa''s Ever-Evolving Anti-Racism Resource List
Tomorrow, I will be sharing a note to the Career Contessa community on the site.
Actions speak louder than words and while we plan to unpause Career Contessa, we don''t plan to stop listening, learning, or doing the work.
In solidarity,
Lauren and the Career Contessa team

Hey there,
Welcome back to my monthly e-newsletter! If you''re new here, I''m Lauren, founder of Career Contessa. I''m also a woman with lots of thoughts, feelings, and vulnerabilities trying to figure it out and sharing along the way.
This monthly letter allows me to give you, the Career Contessa audience, a behind-the-scenes look at all of that. This month I''m sharing what I learned from hosting our first Career Contessa Community Hour-our unique take on a focus group/feedback session-and how COVID-19 has impacted us.
Hosting focus groups and hearing directly from readers is something I love doing and yet, I always struggled to make space for these hours.
I also recognize that getting/giving honest feedback via an online focus group is not a style that works for everyone. To that end, we also plan to roll out more surveys, which also allow for anonymity.
However, the advice I''ve shared whenever people are job searching, laid off, trying to figure out their next career move, etc. is to start with self-reflection. That includes asking questions, getting feedback, and more. (P.S. my book has a whole section on how to conduct your own "listening tour" that I highly recommend.)
So, I took my own advice and went out on my own listening tour. One of the takeaways was that CC users wanted to learn more about entrepreneurship. I''ve always shied away from sharing my "business" advice because...I guess I figured you all didn''t need or want that from me. Note to self- don''t assume.
So I''m dedicating this month''s Lauren Letter to give you a BTS look at how I''m running a small business in the midst of a pandemic in the hopes that it''s helpful-or at least interesting.
Like many businesses, Career Contessa is not immune to the changes that COVID-19 has brought us all. About 50% of our revenue comes from brand partnerships and those "paused indefinitely" overnight in March. YIKES.
To handle this drop, we quickly pivoted to grow other revenue streams such as our online courses. We also found other ways to work with advertisers. At Career Contessa, we prioritize monetizing via advertising and brand partners because that allows us to keep most things either free or low-cost for our users. We know that advertising can be "annoying" to users.
I share this so you know that when you click on an ad, read a sponsored article, or follow through on a podcast advertisers offer, YOU are helping to keep the all of the resources on Career Contessa available. And we will continue to create the resources that help you grow in your career.
Keeping things mostly low-cost (or free) for users has always been important to me-to democratize access to career advice so all women can build a career on their terms. But this is a business, which means we have to make money to support the operation.
We also had a few "lucky" breaks add a protective layer. My book advancement insured us against some of the brand partnership losses. We had also made hard decision to cut expenses and were operating on a very lean scale. These tough calls-and, to be frank, large workloads-allowed us to keep our two full-time staff positions.
Another note to self-revenue and profit are two very different things. In 2019, I made the mistake of assuming higher revenue would also mean more profit. It didn''t. Many of the strategies I tried couldn''t scale-especially in a self-funded business. Another note to self-don''t compare your business to VC-funded businesses. In hindsight, it''s been a "gift" to have to think things through more, be scrappy, and not try to be all the things.
So, here''s where we are. We have a lane-it''s career development. We also have a medium-it''s online and digital. This was not easy to come by. It means we''re not doing many things we wish we could. That''s why you''ve never seen a Career Contessa shop and why you''ve probably never attended an in-person Career Contessa event.
And what does this all mean? It means that entrepreneurship is not glamorous or easy. It means that I don''t have all the answers and right now we are taking our "strategy" one day at a time.
It means showing vulnerability to my team and now, to our audience. It means that saying "no" and not doing things can actually be what grows your business the most-and in a meaningful way.
It means that I''m re-evaluating what type of business I want to build. One that is profitable, provides for a lea team, and find joy in not being a "glitter" company but rather a "glue" company.
We want to be a business that will be here long past COVID-19. We want to be a business that provides reliable tools for all the career pivots, changes, and stages you''ll embark on. Great career advice is not a fad and it''s definitely not a means to commodify feminism. We''re not interested in being cool or iconic-we simply want to help you in your career.
Now, I want to hear from you. Did you enjoy reading about how we work at Career Contessa? Should I share more advice on entrepreneurship? And for the business owners-how are you adjusting with COVID-19
Hit "reply" and let me know! I read every response!
Stay safe and healthy!
Until next month,
Lauren

Hi Contessas,
Confession-when we originally wrote this article about toxic workplaces we thought it might get a little feedback. However, when we shared this article on Instagram is had 100+ comments!!
Toxic work environments are a drain on your personal and professional life-and many people left comments with specific examples of this.
A toxic work environment is more than just a job you "hate."
We all have bad Mondays, challenging weeks, and even disappointing months.
That's the cyclical nature of a career.
However, you're typically able to make it through a bad Monday, survive a challenging week, and learn valuable lessons from a disappointing quarter.
A toxic work environment is like having all of these challenges on repeat, without a break. Toxic work environments breed unrest, competition, low morale, constant stressors, negativity, sickness, high turnover, and even bullying.
Even worse?
Toxic workplaces can lead to stress, burnout, and serious disruptions in your normal life.
So, if you opened this newsletter because you're wondering if your work problems are the result of generalized work stress or something worse, let's dive in to ten signs your workplace might actually be toxic.
10 SIGNS OF A TOXIC WORKPLACE
