Soren Rose’s design for this Park Avenue Penthouse is unforgettable.
No images? Click here STEP INSIDE THIS NEW YORK APARTMENTSoren Rose’s design for this Park Avenue Penthouse is unforgettable. The 6,000 square foot Gramercy residence combines traditional Scandinavian design with industrial and cotemporary New York. With remarkable elements like a dark verde alpi marble wall sourced from the same quarry that Mies Van der Rohe got his marble from for Bracelona Pavilion, this project is thoughtful to the core. It bridges past to present with easy elegance and reflects a deep appreciation for context and detail. The Egg™ chair by Arne Jacobsen is a staple of Danish design with organic curves that take on different ethos in every leather, fabric and colour. It is recognized worldwide as an essential modern design, one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s legendary career, and a technical achievement in craftsmanship. Photography features the Swan™ sofa and Egg™ chair from Fritz Hansen. THE SWAN™ The Swan Sofa™ and Swan™ chair were designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The designs contains no straight lines, making them organic and soft to the eye despite their simplicity and strong architectural appeal.

Copenhagen Fashion Week opens with Fritz Hansen Seating
No images? Click here SEASONLESS STYLE: ‘THE WALK’ by CARCELA week before CARCEL’s opening show, founder Veronica d'Souza spoke to Fritz Hansen about the company’s journey and what customers can continue to expect from the brand's designs. Our conversation with the brand began with timeless design, as we provided seating for their first runway show. CARCEL is a fashion company that dares to value craftsmanship and operates according to its own high standards. It designs are timeless and seasonless, made from natural materials that are local to its production centres. CARCEL owns its own machines and employs women in a Peruvian and Thai prison, overseeing its supply chain and production. There isn’t a detail too small to ignore, and this year they were selected to open Copenhagen Fashion Week with a focus on sustainability. Veronica believes the brand’s ‘slow fashion’ approach is what sets it apart. The days of ignoring workers’ realities and the climate crisis are over.

MARK TAN ON GOOD DESIGN The Copenhagen-based fashion designer Mark Kenly Domino Tan talks about what constitutes good design. What is ‘good’ design? Many have attempted to answer this question, but not Mark Tan. “It’s dangerous to be the judge of what constitutes good design. Good design is subjective, so you can’t judge or quantify its virtue. It doesn’t really serve a purpose to divide design into good and bad, as all design is, in some way, useful or meaningful to someone.”

No images? Click here INSPIRATION FURNITURE LIGHTING ACCESSORIES FIND STORE SCULPTURAL LIGHTING ‘The pendant was inspired by the silhouette of waterdrops gliding down a window.’ says Gry Hammerborg, one of the designer’s two daughters. Jo Hammerborg’s beautiful Silhuet pendant is characterised by soft – almost hypnotising – lines and warm, solid brass. The surface is uncoated and, thus, patinates over time. Its simple form makes the possibilities of application endless – at work, for dining, in kitchens or living rooms. In polished or brushed brass variants, this timeless design will age beautifully, gaining sophistication and character over the years. A design this versatile is as rare as the versatility of the man behind it, the multi-talented Jo Hammerborg. Fritz Hansen reissues the Silhuet lighting design in celebration of the Danish designer Jo Hammerborg’s 100th anniversary. In homage, Hammerborg’s signature and a 100-year tag are inscribed inside every solid brass pendant.
DISCOVER SILHUET PENDANT
The Orient™ pendant is a flawless light design with great luminous efficacy and made from the finest quality materials. The pendant was created by Jo Hammerborg in 1963 and relaunched by Fritz Hansen in 2013. The fitting elegantly conceals the low energy light source and ensures a soft, pleasant light without any glare. The Orient lamp shade is hand spun in a wooden mould, a feature that underlines the original, organic shape and true craftsmanship of this pendant.
DISCOVER THE ORIENT™ PENDANT
Bold in style and personality, Danish silversmith Jo Hammerborg devoted his life strictly to the causes and crafts he cared about. His extraordinary career saw him participate in Denmark’s resistance and struggle for freedom in 1940-45 as a saboteur, study at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and work as a silversmith at prestigious Danish jewellery maker Georg Jensen. He was also a prolific designer, and his 23-year stint as chief designer at lamp manufacturer Fog & Mørup was widely considered the most creative of his career.

No images? Click here INSPIRATION FURNITURE LIGHTING ACCESSORIES FIND STORE MADE WITH CAREWith two artist parents, Cecilie Manz encountered the world of design in early childhood in their workshop. Her own career began in 1992 with an academic education from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Following a semester abroad at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Manz started her own company, which has been the focus of her work ever since. She has produced a number of furniture, accessory and lighting designs exclusively for Fritz Hansen, through a collaboration which began in 2009. ‘It was important to me that the rugs could go with Fritz Hansen''s more classic pieces as well as the contemporary collection. The large, calm carpet in colourless tones creates a quiet space together with a couple of poufs or an iconic chair. The small carpets with intense colour do well alone, like a colour spill on the floor,’ says Manz. Cecilie Manz approached the assignment of doing rugs like she approaches a composition on canvas; outlined concepts as collages with paper, before the ideas were transformed to warm, wool material with tactility. ‘I love working with colours. It feels almost healthy because it’s connected to joy. Nevertheless, I often end up using hues of greys and very down-toned nuances you would find in nature during autumn/winter, or at sea. But living only in pale tones would be horrible to me. You need some stronger tones here and there.’ ‘With these rugs, the woollen textile material is perfect for deep, intense colour tones. It has depth and rich variation to it. Various tufting heights within each design make these rugs subtly three dimensional and tactually interesting. Each rug is handtufted in India and coloured with acid-free dye. Proceeds from cc-tapis production support children’s education in Nepal.

The proportions – Jacobsen’s obsession – are perfection. The original wheel design has been carefully recreated for authenticity. Construction parts in the ball bearing have been changed to strengthen the construction and tested up to very high standards. The wheel colour is custom made, and wheel mechanics ensure durability and a very noticeably smooth roll. Danish designer Arne Jacobsen designed this elegant trolley for his tea, but its possibilities are endless. As a bar cart, serving trolley or side table, the mobile design is versatile with a sophisticated, architectural edge. Best of all, it will remain ‘modern’ – and always useful – for decades to come. Arne Jacobsen (b.1902-1971) was a visionary of Danish design and began collaborating with Fritz Hansen in 1934. He designed the Egg™, Swan™, Series7™ and Dot™, among other iconic works.

The apartment features a bubble-gum-pink kitchen and a striped watermelon-green vinyl floor, fusing contemporary techniques with natural and artificial materials. No images? Click here TRANSPARENT DESIGNFor Poul Kjærholm, simplicity was essential. He insisted on materials of the highest quality and designed for transparency. Indeed, nothing in Kjærholm’s designs is unnecessary or cosmetic. ‘The important thing is to express the personality of the material – not mine,’ he said. ‘Steel''s constructive potential is not the only thing that interests me; the refraction of light on its surface is an important part of my artistic work. I consider steel a material with the same artistic merit as wood and leather.’ Poul Kjærholm studied at the design school in Copenhagen under Hans Wegner, the master cabinet maker and designer in wood. It’s interesting that Poul Kjærholm chose steel rather than wood in his early productions, treating flat steel with the same delicacy that a wood cabinetmaker approaches his material. Poul Kjærholm was transparent in showing all the visual connections between elements of his designs, including screws. He didn’t try to hide things, but – rather – made them a part of coherent designs. Some consider Kjærholm’s work ‘industrial’ in appearance. Appropriately, perhaps, Kjærholm called himself a ‘furniture architect.’ The simple dimensions of his designs require complicated welding. All the grinding must meet perfectly, and the level of detailing is extremely high. Today, Kjærholm pieces like the PK20 and PK22 are all assembled by hand. The integrity and resilience of spring steel ensures that designs are long lasting and strong. The continuous and rather complex design of the PK25™ frame would be impossible without it. This kind of extraordinary design is inherently linked to material – in this case, steel and Poul Kærholm’s desire for the purest expression of his choice material.

Click here LUXURY LIVES ONOn the 50th anniversary of the design, Fritz Hansen introduces the Lily™ chair in sculptural Walnut veneer with classic chromed legs.Natural Walnut makes this special anniversary edition both unique and historical. Until now, the Lily chair has never been released with a natural veneer exterior because it is extremely difficult to make the
curved armrests without cracking the exterior veneer. The armrest angles and wood grain are complex compliments. When executed perfectly, they converge beautifully.
EXPLORE LILY™
‘The Lily™ was Arne Jacobsen’s last chair design and perhaps his most elaborate. It resembles a lily flower with open petals. Jacobsen’s lifelong interest in botany and painting can be seen very clearly in this design,’ says Fritz Hansen’s Head of Design, Christian Andresen. The Lily 50th Anniversary Edition is available with or without armrests in natural Walnut veneer with chromed legs. The interior veneer layers are beech wood. Every chair has a special anniversary tag mounted under its seat.

TEXTURE EFFECTStudies show that textures influence our moods and perceptions, but texture is usually considered at the end of creating and redecorating interiors. In interior design, texture simply refers to the appearance, or tactile quality, of a surface. Incorporating different textures in a room can evoke different sensations. ‘Some materials, like silk, having a cooling effect while others, like wool, have a warming effect,’ says Berlin-based multidisciplinary designer Nadine Goepfert, who is interested in exploring how materials and textiles impact human patterns of behavior.

No images? Click here HONOUR EVERY FLOWERSpanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon was inspired by the ancient art of Japanese flower arranging – known as ikebana or ikeru – to create a set of new, unconventional vases exclusively for Fritz Hansen. ‘The Ikeru vases have something in common with Jaime Hayon’s candlestick designs. Now, his urban design language pairs with true nature. The vases almost look like little cities blooming,’ says Christian Andresen, Head of Fritz Hansen Design. The designs are transparent and direct in their intention to honour every flower placed within them. The task of flower arranging is slowed down and simplified, for deep appreciation and presence of mind. Nature is at the core of this design. Metal flutes hold individual flowers for a full appreciation of every flower from stem to crown. Together, the flutes of different heights create a landscape from which the flowers rise. Water in the glass trays below keep flowers fresh.

Nevertheless, it is still a prominent example of Danish modernist architecture. It is known all over the world as the hotel in which the architect designed every detail. It is the most harmonious high-rise building in Copenhagen and constitutes an ideal in Modern Design. Arne Jacobsen''s artistic talent is evident throughout the hotel - from the proportions of the building to the design of the interior. His unique ability to carry through an all-encompassing design ideas – or a gesamtkunstwerk as the Germans call it – must be admired.
EGG™ LOUNGE CHAIR
THE LOBBYThe present hotel lobby is in many ways similar to the 1960''s lobby. The room is delimited by a shopping zone. The glass panes of the shops separate the lobby from the hustle and bustle of the street and at the same time let daylight into the room. The result is a calm, exclusive atmosphere. The famous Egg™ and Swan™ chairs, which were specially designed for the hotel, match the pleasant calm of the room.
