Its that time of the year when were partly suffering from food comas and almost ready for winters hibernation, but theres a new year on the way. Check out a few entertainments in store before we hand the baton to a new decade
A Hanukkah Party is Saturday in the Murphys area. Call for the location to join the Mother Lode Jewish Community to celebrate a joyous holiday with a potluck with latkes and other traditional treats. Its free. Call 533-1650 for reservations because space is limited. Visit motherlodejewishcommunity.org for more.
The Home for the Holidays: Reunion Concert is at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Black Bart Playhouse, 580 S. Algiers St., Murphys. The Columbia College Big Band performs with former members (Krista Sturgis, David Tanner, Tyler Combs, Clint Day and Marcus van Jensen, with vocalists Andrea Hayes, Rebecca Dias, Miriam Acquaviva and many more) adding to the show. Tickets are $15 each at the Mountain Bookshop in Sonora, the Manzanita Bookstore on campus or just before the show, if still available.
Play or sing along with the Song Posse from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Manzanita Arts Emporium, 1211 S. Main St. (Highway 49), Angels Camp. Acoustic musicians gather to jam, and youre welcome to join in or listen to the tunes. Its free to join in the fun. Call Chrys at 728-1439 or 728-7161.
Catch the Black Irish Band at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Sutter Creek Theatre, 44 Main St., Sutter Creek. The Tuolumne County folk band plays original and traditional music from around the world (Celtic, Spanish, Italian and more). The fun group plays mostly upbeat songs that captivate through history. Tickets are $14 in advance at suttercreektheatre.com or $16 on show day.
Ras Beeken Dan plays from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Twisted Oak Tasting Room, 363 Main St., Murphys. The popular Murphys musician performs a free show. Call 736-9080.
On Wednesday, Jan. 1, you can join a New Years Day Hike at 10 a.m. The group meets at Peoria Flat Road/Old Melones Dam Road off of OByrnes Ferry Road and Highway 108, west of Jamestown. A U.S. Bureau of Reclamation ranger leads the group on a 4-mile challenging hike to the top of Peoria Mountain. You should bring water and sturdy boots for this free outing. Rain cancels the adventure. Call 536-9094 ext. 233 to be sure.
Have some fun and, if youre headed out for some New Years Eve festivities (or any other shindig), hand those car keys to a member of your group who isnt driving. Enjoy the end of 2019, and heres hoping that 2020 is a winner.

Happy 2020, friends! I hope your new year is starting out smoothly. While there are fewer entertainments over this particular weekend, you can always find a good time in the Mother Lode.
A Volunteer Meet & Greet is staged from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Eagle Cotage (yes, its spelled in an odfd way; you might learn that story Saturday!) inside Columbia State Historic Park, off Parrotts Ferry Road in Columbia. State park officials welcome anyone interested in becoming a volunteer docent at the historic Gold Rush town to hear a short presentation about volunteer opportunities and meet with existing docents to talk about work in the museum, archives, schoolhouse or library, helping with special events and town tours and more. Its free to attend and learn about how you might help. Call 588-9128 for more.
Coffee Talk is from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Angels Camp Business Association office, 300 S. Main St. (Highway 49), Angels Camp. The association welcomes members and nonmembers to discuss improving the business climate in the city at this free event. Enjoy a cup of joe and learn something. Visit angelscampbusiness.com or call 736-1333.
On Wednesday, the Calaveras County Garden Club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Murphys Hotel, 457 Main St., Murphys. Club members and guests hear from Ken Jones, who discusses water features with a lunch. The cost is $21 at 890-0323. Visit calaverascountygardenclub.org for more.
For the future file and if youre craving crustaceans youd better nab tickets to a couple of crab feeds Ive heard are coming before they sell out. Theres a feed on Jan. 11 in San Andreas (tickets are $50 each by calling Paul Steck at 754-0228 or Patty Luna at 772-1887) and one on Jan. 19 in Tuolumne (tickets are $50 at twainhartesoroptimist.org or by calling Patt Koral at 928-1616). Ill spill those details as those parties arrive, but early purchases reward those who plan ahead. (If your group is staging a feed in the coming weeks, email me the information at mtaylor@calaverasenterprise.com.)
Revel in the quiet time before the days and nights fill to brimming!

Mother Lode wineries are slowly reopening, with special protocol to keep visitors safe. Here's what you need to know when visiting the wine country this weekend.
Amador County
Gone are the days of standing a crowded tasting bar clamoring for your next taste of the nectar of the gods. Instead, we're limiting our capacity, both in group size and overall number of parties, so we can maintain safe, physical distancing, both between staff and guests and between guest parties. You may still enjoy your tasting at a tasting bar or you might be seated at a table in the tasting room or even on a patio overlooking gorgeous foothill vineyards and beautiful garden landscapes.
By Marc Lutz
- Reservations will be required and/or highly encouraged.
- Tasting stations (tasting bars, tables, chairs, etc.) will be sanitized after each use
- Physical distancing policies and procedures will be in place at all times
- Frequent touch points (door handles, counter tops, payment devices, pens, etc.) will be frequently sanitized
- Overall capacity at each winery is decreased to allow for physical distancing
- Restrooms and other common areas will be sanitized at least every hour
- Tasting experiences may occur outdoors
- Staff undergo daily health screenings and are asked to wear face coverings whenever interacting with customers
- Face coverings are requested and encouraged while not actively tasting and may be required at some locations
- If you are feeling sick, please stay at home
- You may see changes to tasting fees and structures for tasting experiences. Be sure to ask about tasting fee policies when making a reservation
- Meticulous hand hygiene is required of our staff and requested of guests.
Calaveras County
- Tasting room staff will be wearing face coverings as required. Visitors to tasting rooms are asked to wear a face covering to ensure businesses can continue to remain open. Numbers of new COVID-19 cases must be kept to a minimum if not at zero in order to reopen tasting rooms. You can wear a face covering when entering and leaving but can take it off to enjoy your wine
by Marc Lutz
- Not all tasting rooms will be offering wine tastings or glass sales due to the many compliance tasks required to reopen under the current phase. Be sure to check the Tasting Room Directory to find out who will offer bottle sales only vs. wine to enjoy while visiting
- Some of our tasting room managers will ask for you to make a reservation before visiting so be sure to check the Tasting Room Directory above for details
- Group gatherings of more than 12 are not permitted at this time. Please plan your time in wine country accordingly
- If sick, please stay home. Calaveras' family-run tasting rooms prioritize safety first
- The Calaveras Winegrape Alliance Wine Information Center will be open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m-5 p.m. at 202 Main Street in Murphys. Stop by and get the latest tasting room maps and information
- Most restaurants in wine country have reopened. Check out this list of available restaurants, and for best results make a reservation.
Tuolumne County
Inner Sanctum Cellars Basecamp is offering tastings and will be hosting its first live music event since the onset of the stay-at-home order on Friday from 5:30-7 p.m. The Duo Tones will be back and are sure to get you on your feet. There will also be pizza from the St. Charles Saloon.
In order to maintain social distancing, tickets for the Friday live music events must be purchased online in advance at innersanctumcellars.com.
From Inner Sanctum: "You'll see a different look in the tasting room as we still adhere to COVID-19 rules. We've installed a third bar which will help with distancing that we still feel is important.
You will be welcomed by our "Inner Sanctum Cellars Greeter" who will assist you once your at the property and our pourers will explain the new tasting process. We have set up the property so you can enjoy a glass, a bottle and some food in a relaxing and safe environment. Your time with us is precious and we want to provide you with the best experience. This has been an interesting time as a business, but it has also provided us the opportunity to recreate our best practices that our customers will hopefully appreciate for years to come. Cheers."
Inner Sanctum Cellars Basecamp is an outdoor venue located 22004 Parrotts Ferry Road in Sonora.

Art online
Artists Studio Tours-a weekend when art lovers can tour the studios of Calaveras artists-has long been a signature event for local artists in September. But this year, due to COVID-19 risks to artists and collectors, the Calaveras County Arts Council has pivoted to an online event, which can be viewed at calaverasarts.org.
According to Executive Director Kathy Mazzaferro, the Arts Council has recast the event. "We understand that this is a difficult year for all," she said. "We propose a different way to support our Calaveras County artists. Instead of two days in September for people to visit studios, we've created an online event, which lasts until the end of October to advertise our participating artists to the public."
Potter Steven Hall is one of 25 local artists featured in the 2020 Studio Tour.
Courtesy photo.
"You can go to our website and explore the work of 25 local artists," said Maggie Sloan, marketing director and creator of the event. "It's fun to click through, read their statements, and find out what they're doing. And of course there is a sales page!"
You can arrange with individual artists to see more of their work, or arrange a private viewing of work that's in the Arts Council's San Andreas Gallery Store.
"We're very pleased with the selection of artists we have this year for our online tour," said Sloan. "The art is beautiful, fun. Charming. It's created with so much heart."

Master Gardeners are trained educational outreach volunteers with the UCCE program. They provide practical scientific horticulture and gardening information to gardeners in their communities across California.
In Tuolumne County, more than 90 trained Master Gardeners answer gardening and landscaping questions and host a number of activities including the annual Garden Tour and provide free classes at their Demonstration Garden.
In addition to the traditional emphasis on general gardening and landscaping, Master Gardeners also focus on water conservation, backyard composting and alternatives to chemical use in lawns and gardens.
Attendees can easily join their next presentation by clicking on this link. The ID is already embedded in that link, so visitors will not need to write it in. Users may be asked to install the Zoom app. If so, just follow the directions for installation.
The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m., so be sure to get comfortable and join the meeting on a device at that time!

From ''Robo-Doc'' to local business surveys, week''s local news covered here
By Marc Lutz? ? ?Updated
Welcome to the Calaveras Enterprise weekly email newsletter.
By now we've all had our share (and then some) of holiday meals and shopping deals. Here's a look at what was covered last week and what's to come.
It's no doubt been one untraditional Thanksgiving, as public health officials continue to urge people to practice social distancing. Cases of COVID-19 have surged in Calaveras in the past week, pushing the county from the orange tier to the red tier. An additional death and 28 cases were confirmed this past week, prompting the tier change.
Reporter Dakota Morlan covered a pilot program dubbed "Robo-Doc" that brings telehealth into area schools. It aims to reduce in-person doctor's office visits and provide services that help school nurses.
Megan Gace and Kathy Gallino hit the streets of San Andreas to survey businesses. The Chamber of Commerce CEO and Economic Development director are checking on the state of local shops to see if there are any services that could benefit them.
While commercial cannabis growing is now legal in Calaveras, the board of supervisors banned the growing of industrial hemp.
In sports, two area student athletes and topnotch wrestlers from rival schools have both signed at the same university. Guy Dossi takes a look at their stellar high school careers and why the two are taking the same educational path beyond Calaveras and Bret Harte high schools.
Coming up
Next week we'll continue ongoing coverage of COVID-19 and where the county stands in the state's tier system.
A little-known organization that has roots in Calaveras aims to keep track of locals' roots. The Calaveras Genealogical Society traces lineages as far back as possible.
Bear Valley opens today, Nov. 27. Will the resort draw more ski enthusiasts into the region and help bolster the local economy?
There will also be a feel-good story about an unexpected turn of events that helped to keep a softball field going despite the pandemic setbacks.

Alternative to usual summer fun relieves heat, provides history on Mother Lode
By Marc Lutz? ? ?
Imagine thinking you'd possibly found the largest deposit of gold in the Mother Lode. Then imagine exploring a little deeper and discovering you just found a big, dark pit.
That's just a little of the history visitors to Black Chasm Cavern National Natural Landmark will receive during their outing to the historical hole in the ground.
The cavern, found at 15701 Pioneer Volcano Road in Volcano, can be a tricky place to find, but using any number of GPS apps should make the trek easier. Once there, visitors can peruse the gift shop or take a 45-minute tour of the cavern, which is anything but a hole in the ground.
It's also a good way to beat the hazy, hot summer days, as the temperatures in the cavern are typically in the 50-degree range this time of year.
Since landmark staff is following social distancing and face-covering guidelines, less people are allowed on each tour to make it more spacious in the underground world. That means the tours fill up fast and the wait times for subsequent tours could be an hour or more. Arriving before the cavern opens at 10 a.m. can get people on the list a little quicker.
Can't make it on the weekend? The attraction is open seven days a week, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
During the tour, visitors will learn the history behind the discovery of the cavern, just how deep it goes, why that one wall glows, and what stalagmites, stalactites and helictites are.
And, depending on who your tour guide is, be prepared for some pretty punny cave talk.
For more information on Black Chasm Cavern National Natural Landmark, call (888) 488-1960 or visit cavetouring.com.

The Mother Lode is gearing up for a spooky Halloween weekend, with plenty of COVID-conscious activities for kids and adults alike!
Silent movie and scavenger hunt at Ironstone
Catch dinner and a viewing of the scariest silent movie ever made, "The Phantom of the Opera," at Ironstone Vineyards Friday and Saturday night at 6 p.m.
To keep the event safe, Ironstone is implementing the following precautions:
Cutting the amount of guests allowed to each performance in half.
Tables/reservations will be up to eight people and separate bookings/tables may not be combined.
Lasagna and the other regular food items will be served tableside rather than the usual buffet format.
Facemasks will be required when not sitting at your table. All staff will be wearing face masks and gloves.
Reservations can be made by visiting ironstonevineyards.com/reservations. Any questions or concerns can be addressed by emailing info@ironstonevineyards.com or calling 728-1251.
Also, stop by Halloween Day between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a free, COVID-safe, kid-friendly scavenger hunt! Get your card from the guard shack on the way in and see where it leads you. Costumes encouraged!
Ironstone Vineyards is located at 1894 6 Mile Rd in Murphys.
All aboard the Train of Terror
In compliance with all state, city and county guidelines, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation have joined forces to present "Trains, Tracks & Terror," a newly created drive-thru event on Friday and Saturday, from 6 p.m.-10 p.m.
A safe alternative to trick-or-treating or haunted house activities, carloads of guests are invited to follow a pre-planned route through the Railtown 1897 property, if they dare. Drivers will be guided to go beyond the gates, along the side of the historic Roundhouse, out back past the turntable and ending up at the Tri-Dam Machine Shop, which is not normally available for public viewing. Along the way, guests will experience a variety of scary yet entertaining vignettes safely from the comfort of their cars (with spooky audio broadcast through FM car radios).
Note: the "Mad" Machinist Shop vignette may not be suitable for young children, so an alternate route is available - always eager for new victims, "mad" bloody machinists will be sawing bodies and revving up chainsaws.
In addition, the famous Sierra No. 3 (also known as the "Movie Star Locomotive") will be front and center on the turntable, all steamed up and "spooked" out, with a skeleton crew. Also, scary scenes will be projected through windows and doorways.
"Trains, Tracks & Terror!" is made possible by generous donations from local community organizations. A first-come, first-served experience, the price for the event is a $5 donation per car (single family vehicles only; no motorhomes, buses, trailers or dually trucks please). Visitors must always remain in their vehicles and the experience may not be suitable for young children.
For more information, visit www.railtown1897.org.
Outdoor trick-or-treating in Copperopolis
The Square at Copper Valley is hosting its annual Spook-tacular Halloween Night, starting Saturday at 6 p.m. Outdoor kid-friendly activities will include family operated candy tables, games, pony rides, ice cream, "Monster Mash" karaoke and contests.
Be sure to wear your best costume and come ready for lots and lots of candy!
The Square at Copper Valley is located at 100 Town Square Road in Copperopolis.

Welcome to the Calaveras Enterprise weekly email newsletter.
The past week has seen some winter-like weather, and people are undoubtedly getting ready for the long Thanksgiving weekend coming next week.
In this week's newsletter we're covering the current state of COVID-19 in Calaveras County, with a look at the number of new cases and how a return to restrictions are impacting the region. Experts weigh in on how to stay safe, even with the coming holidays when family and friends traditionally gather in large groups.
With Thanksgiving Day coming Nov. 26, make sure to check out Holly Moser's account of being a vegetarian surrounded by carnivorous relatives during the holidays. She shows how easy alternatives can be a tasty plant-based addition to any meal.
In sports, Guy Dossi tackles all that's going on in professional and local high school athletics, which is quite a bit given the postponement of several sports.
The wet, gray skies are past for now with a chilly, yet clear week ahead. Keep in mind that the printed version of the Calaveras Enterprise will come out Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving. Our offices will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 for the holiday.
Here's a look at what's being covered in next week's edition:
The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Director Kathy Gallino reached out to area businesses to assess their needs during the pandemic.
A "robo-doc" program is being introduced as a faster, safer alternative to area schools.
It will be sometime before COVID-19 is a bad memory. We look at the latest numbers and how the virus could be impacting retail operations on that most popular of shopping holidays Black Friday.
The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors eyes a ban on industrial hemp growing.
In sports local grapplers sign to wrestle at Oregon State; a thoughtful gesture pays bills for softball field; Guy Dossi finds ways to stay grateful during a difficult year; and did the Raiders beat Kansas City for the second time this season?

On Aug. 28, Ironstone Vineyards is bringing another drive-in movie to you. This time it will be the family favorite "Cars."
The procedure is the same as last time. You buy the wine, Ironstone throws in the ticket and a bag of popcorn. As with last time, you have some options. Since the Angels Camp Farmers' Market is closed for the month of July, it's a great time to pay a visit to one of the most prolific homegrown farmers in the area.
Fast Eddie's Garden started a decade ago when Ed McGlothern Jr. quit smoking and decided to use the money he saved to grow a garden on his one-acre property in Vallecito. You can read more about the story behind Fast Eddie's here.
Today, the garden provides a bounty of squash, lemons, Persian cucumbers and 13 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes. In the coming weeks, McGlothern will harvest eggplant and an array of peppers, melons and pumpkins - all free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. And, of course, don't forget to pick up a jar of Fast Eddie's award-winning pickles and/or salsa!
The farm stand is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June through October.
Fast Eddie's Garden is located at 3615 Poag Lane in Vallecito. For more information, visit @Fast Eddie's Garden on Facebook or call (209) 770-3766.

Happening Saturday, March 14
Art Night in Downtown Sonora
On the second Saturday of each month, Downtown Sonora vendors stay open late to host live music and art. Wine, dine, stroll, and enjoy a relaxing evening with homegrown vibes.
The event runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. along Washington Street in Sonora.
Happening Sunday, March 15
The Diamonds shine in Angels Camp
If you have a poodle skirt or varsity sweater, you might want to wear it for the March 15 Ovations concert, when the American Bandstand sound of the 1950s will fill the Bret Hart Theater in Angels Camp. Brush off your jitterbug, two-step, and rock 'n roll boogie-woogie dance moves for this trip through the classics.
Or just wear comfy clothes to sit back and enjoy this high energy show of early rock and roll.
The Calaveras County Arts Council presents The Diamonds, a vocal quartet famous for their harmonies, will sing songs like "Little Darlin'" -a hit for the original Diamonds in 1957, when they drove it (possibly in a '57 Chevy) to second place on Billboard's top 100 for eight weeks. The current globe-trotting group comprises singer Gary Owens, Adam David Marino, Michael Lawrence, and Jeff Dolan, all talented vocalists. But singing isn't all they do. They are accomplished musicians, playing sax, trombone, and trumpet, and are accompanied by a piano player and a drummer. "There's also a lot of choreography," Owens said, since two of the performers come from a background that includes dancing. "We have medleys that we tie together with choreography. That adds another dimension to the show."
Owens stressed that this isn't a simple tribute show. There's also dialogue and "what we hope is comedy. A lot of people come and think they're going to see a concert, but at the end, they realize they've laughed, they've clapped, they've enjoyed each performer's personality. The entertainment aspect of it is the most surprising. When people walk away, they feel like they've been entertained."
While they strive for that classic sound, Owens said his favorite song the group performs is "an acapella version of the Beach Boys' In My Room. We do it off the microphone, and everybody has to be quiet and listen very carefully." Although the group is made up of four distinctive individuals, "we have created one strong group personality. The four of us as a unit have a special chemistry, and it is that chemistry that gives us our unique identity."
Still, it''s the music that drives the show. "The music is timeless," said Owens. "That's why we're still going strong. It's timeless for the people who lived through it, and who want to introduce their grandkids to it."
The show runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dr. Elliott Smart Performing Arts Center, Bret Harte High
School in Angels Camp. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for those under 18. You can purchase online at www.calaverasarts.org, or call 754-1774 Monday through Thursday for more information.

Delays, cancellations sideline youth sports; Local church tackling homelessness
By Marc Lutz? ? ?Updated
Welcome to the Calaveras Enterprise weekly email newsletter.
December is here and so is the official holiday shopping season. The results of last week's informal poll on calaverasenterprise.com showed that 72.9% of respondents would do their shopping online; less than a quarter of respondents (22.9%) would purchase from local small businesses; and just 4.3% said they'd shop with big box retailers.
With cases of COVID-19 surging across the nation, Calaveras County is not immune. This past week, the region joined the majority of other California counties now in the purple tier, which restricts - even closes - several businesses that the state has deemed "non-essential."
Even during the pandemic, ski resorts have kept running with safety guidelines in place, and Bear Valley is no exception, as Noah Berner writes.
As portions of the population face job loss and evictions, one local church is helping the best they can. Dakota Morlan highlights the congregation's effort to convert an old thrift store into housing for those facing homelessness.
And in sports, another sack for youth athletics occurred as the Motherlode Valley Football League canceled the 2020-21 season due to the pandemic.
Coming up
Next week we're continuing coverage of the Fagundes trial, a second go-round in court for the Washington state man accused of murdering Toni Jilbert of Manteca in Copperopolis.
Joshua Pack, the director of Public Works, is resigning his position. We'll look at his time in Calaveras County and what's next for him.
It's also that time of year when charitable efforts ramp up, and we'll cover the efforts of volunteers and nonprofits in the coming weeks.
In a blow to high school sports, CIF has once again delayed a start to the season until at least January. Sports Editor Guy Dossi digs into what this means for local schools.

Get ready. It's going to be a jam-packed weekend of music, plaid and whiskey.
Starting Friday, March 6
The Celts take over Sonora
The 34th annual Sonora Celtic Faire takes to the Mother Lode Fairgrounds in Sonora from March 6 to 8, bringing lots of history and music to the Mother Lode.
The fairgrounds are overtaken by tartans, the sound of bagpipes and the clash of armor as the event welcomes numerous re-enactors, who roam the grounds immersing the crowd in the history of all Celtic people. Representatives from at least 13 clans are on hand in encampments that encourage exploration of a nearly forgotten time.
Skerryvore
The event is also a showcase of Celtic music in all its forms, with Skerryvore, from Scotland, headlining in 2020. The group features brothers Daniel (on accordion) and Martin Gillespie (pipes, whistles and accordion), steeped in the Scottish ceili (social gathering) tradition of the Isle of Tiree. Combine the brothers with friends Fraser West (on drums) and Alec Dalglish (guitar and vocals), who have backgrounds in brass, wind and jazz bands, and the band mixes those styles with blues, folk and country influences. Later, Craig Espie (fiddle) and Jodie Bremaneson (bass) joined to complete the current lineup.
Seven Nations performs this year, too. The act that was founded in New York City boasts players from California, Toronto and Florida, who have crafted their own unique sounds that's been heard on television in Public Broadcasting Service and CNN shows.
"Seven Nations is not your father's Celtic band," says a release. "With a passionate, tender and rollicking style that winningly veers from roots and folk to dance and fusion-rock, Seven Nations has earned a growing reputation as an adventurous band with a charismatic stage presence."
The three-day weekend also features music from Celtcia, Tempest, Molly's Revenge, the Black Irish Band, Brother, Michael Mullen, the Fresno Stag and Thistle Pipes & Drums, the Ripon Irish Bagpipe Band, Cooking With Turf, Glenn Morgan and more.
Full-contact jousting is again a crashing feature of the event. Knights squaring off atop trusty steeds have been very popular at the Sonora Celtic Faire since it was introduced in 1997.
"The audience will be captivated by the thrill of witnessing two large warhorses, racing at full gallop to a crashing finish, as knights drop their lances," a release says. "The heart-pounding joust action will take place in the arena with the Queen of Scotland in attendance to make sure that things do not get out of hand with the masses."
Mary Queen of Scots is on hand with her complete court and royal tents, and a large group of Viking warriors swarms the entire fairgrounds - with one large encampment situated away from the hundreds of Celts in attendance to highlight their history.
All forms of Celtic dance are celebrated, including Scottish folk and Highland dancing, and the ever-popular Irish step-dancing.
Authentic foods and beverages will be offered, and there is a Celtic Marketplace stocked with all manner of regalia suited to everyone from peasant tots to regal warriors.
"For the little ones at the Celtic Faire, there are always exciting activities going on, including family-fun stages of fantastic entertainment like fire jugglers, fire-breathing dragons, puppet shows, costumed fairytale characters and a Celtic-themed Children's Area with games and crafts," the release said.
Another highlight this year is the "famous" Whisky Tasting Experience, which includes a large new venue for tasting Scotch Whiskies that also features live music. Sharing the soup
Prospect 772 Wine Company in Angels Camp is proud to say that by the end of this week, they will have distributed over 225 quarts of soup (and counting) to the community since the beginning of quarantine.
"We want to thank all of you who have been participating, and contributing donations," the vineyard announced. "We will keep this going as long as the need and demand is still there."
This Saturday, you can pick up chicken noodle soup with a rich chicken broth infused with sherry, cream, parmesan and rosemary, cooked by Ali's Eats. It will be paired with a half-loaf of Todd''s Sourdough Bread.
The winery continues to sell out each week, so if you want to ensure you have some soup and bread set aside for you to pick up you can text or call Ron at (510) 867-9106.
It is also a good time to pick up some bubbly or some beautiful reds to pair with your meal.
Pickup is at Prospect 772, located at 772 Appaloosa Way near Angels Camp.
For more good eats this weekend, here's a list of restaurants that offer takeout and delivery options.

Take some time to explore the arts and sciences this weekend with these virtual exhibits.
Gone Viral
University of the Pacific students are going viral with a COVID-19-related virtual art and essay exhibit. Students in Introduction to Museum Studies, taught by University Curator Lisa Cooperman, had planned to create a coronavirus-themed pop-up exhibition for a mid-semester project to be displayed in Pacific's Reynolds Gallery at the end of March. But the university was forced to move to remote learning. What began as an in-person collaboration designed for a campus gallery about a timely topic shifted as students moved from bystanders to active participants in the global crisis. The focus of the exhibit evolved to reflect their experiences, fears, stress, coping mechanisms and hope for the future.
To take a tour of the virtual exhibit, click here.
Globetrotting from your couch
Quarantine may be a bummer, but it''s also an opportunity to "visit" fantastic destinations across the globe without having to fly the miles. Dozens of world-class museums are now offering virtual tours so you can view some of humanity's greatest treasures from the comfort of your home. Locations include the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
Travel + Leisure magazine has compiled a helpful list of 12 famous museums you can tour from your couch. Read the article here.

It's the third weekend in May, and we're all missing the fair. Fortunately, the Calaveras County fairgrounds administration and Junior Livestock Committee are providing alternative ways for you to enjoy some fair food favorites and celebrate the achievements of young livestock exhibitors.
A little taste of the fair
You can still get your fair food fix this Saturday at a drive-thru booth provided by Black Diamond Graphics. Purchase a corn dog, cotton candy and a soda without getting out of your car. You can also pick up a fair T-shirt for $15. Cash, credit and debit accepted.
The booth will be located near the South Entrance of the Calaveras County fairgrounds, across from Glory Hole. It will be open Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Virtual livestock auction
Fill your fridge with high-quality meat, raised by the youth of Calaveras County. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the exhibitors don't get to show their animals this year, but their months of hard work can still pay off at the auction.
On Sunday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., buyers can purchase beef, pork, lamb, goat and rabbit. Register at frogtown.org. A direct link will be provided on auction day.
For more information or help with registering, call the fair office at 736-2561.

The 21st annual "Celebrate Life" Art Auction, the pivotal fundraiser of the year for Hospice of Amador & Calaveras, is happening virtually, on Sept. 18.
A generous group of talented local artists, dedicated volunteers and valuable raffle prize contributors, is making it possible for this first virtual event to be a night filled with as much fun and excitement as past years, all in an effort to support the Hospice of Amador & Calaveras mission to serve everyone in the community who needs quality, compassionate end-of-life care.
All proceeds of the event goes directly to providing care for Hospice patients and families in Amador and Calaveras counties.
Broadcast straight from picturesque Karmere Winery, hosts Frank Halverson and Tammy Beilstein will guide virtual attendees through the preview and auction of handcrafted and other auction items donated by local artists and wineries, including unique artisan jewelry, pottery, textiles, original paintings, yard art and wine barrel furniture.
For foodies, auction items include a "Date Night for 2" provided by Bistro 49 Southern Bites that includes a six-course food and wine pairing designed and executed by Chef KC and Chef Rodney. Other items in the food realm include "The Ultimate Backyard BBQ," donated by Go-Go-Q by Taste Restaurant and Wine Bar, consisting of a privately catered, three-course, baRbecue dinner event for 20 people, with Amador Brewery beer and two hours of live music from local favorite band After Dark!
For those attendees who do not find an auction item to purchase, please consider supporting Hospice by participating in the last event of the evening, "I Stand for Hospice," which will be hosted by long-time cherished Hospice supporter, Stan Lukowicz.
The streamed event will be accessible on Facebook Live, via the KVGC and Hospice Facebook pages. The online auction site will go live at the same time, so for attendees who do not have Facebook, there are two ways to get to the auction:

Whether you are participating in community festivities this weekend or keeping it close to home, there are a few different ways to welcome the holiday season.
Note: Health officials have warned against gatherings of more than three households and recommend continued social distancing, as Calaveras County and the majority of the state have reported widespread COVID-19 transmission.
Lights of Love Virtual Tree Lighting Ceremony
The Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation (MTMC Foundation) is holding its second annual Lights of Love tree lighting ceremony on the hospital grounds in San Andreas at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.
Up until the deadline on Nov. 27, local residents had been making tribute light donations to remember or honor loved ones.
"Each tribute will be represented by a light on our tall tree," an invitation to the event reads. "Tribute names will be displayed during the event and then placed inside the hospital near the lobby tree to shine throughout the season."
While the event drew a crowd last year, this year it will take place virtually due to COVID-19.
"There were plans to do a nice, socially distanced event, but because of the rise in cases in our community, we have decided to go 100% virtual," MTMC Foundation Philanthropy Manager Charanjit "CJ" Singh said.
Singh said that the fundraiser has been a huge success this year, with over $20,000 raised for the MTMC Foundation.
"2020 has definitely been an unprecedented year," Singh said. "We hope that when the lights shine on the tree in front of the hospital that people really see that there's a lot of good that can come out of even a rough year."
Those wishing to attend online can watch the ceremony live on Mark Twain Medical Center's Facebook page.
West Point's Christmas 4 Kids Shopping Spree and Tree Lighting
Pure Joy Ministries will be facilitating its annual Christmas 4 Kids Shopping Spree on Saturday, Dec. 5 during the West Point tree lighting ceremony starting at 6 p.m. at 320 Main Street. This year, the event will take place outside to encourage social distancing. Children will be gifted with "Pure Joy Bucks" in order to purchase gifts for their family including scarves and hats knitted by generous volunteers.
Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa in Copperopolis
The Square at Copper Valley is hosting a tree lighting and Christmas celebration on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event will include live music by local jazz band Stolen Moments, visits with Santa and a hot cider social.

Well, this is awkward. How do you write a guide to the weekend when no one is allowed to leave their homes?
Luckily, we have some innovative folks here in the Mother Lode who aren't letting a quarantine get in the way of your weekend dose of arts and entertainment. As long as you have a functional internet connection, you'll be able to see, hear and perhaps even taste the best of the region from the comfort (and safety) of your own couch.
Happening Friday, March 27
Virtual bonfire concert
Inner Sanctum Cellars presents "Bonfire Friday Virtual Live Concert" with Jill Warren. Tune in to the Inner Sanctum Facebook page Friday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and enjoy.
Happening Saturday, March 28
Quarantine cabaret
Life is a cabaret, and Fourth Wall Entertainment Troupe will be Facebook live-streaming its most popular numbers from cabarets past this Saturday.
This variety musical revue will feature performances by Joe Urrutia, Nick and Trista Behm, Cyndie Klorer, Rob Byron and Ann Mazzaferro, who will be sporting exciting, sequined costumes from the 1920s.
The set will be reminiscent of a cabaret bar, with scattered tables and chairs (an appropriate distance of 6 feet apart). The cast will sit at the tables during the performance to cheer each other on, as there will be no live audience.
"We are really excited about the ambiance this will convey, as well as the unity and support among the performers," Fourth Wall Director Cyndie Klorer said. "This is the core troupe of performers who have done multiple cabaret shows in the past. We are a tight-knit group who work well together. We decided unanimously that we wanted to do something for the community to lighten the mood, and to remind them that we at Fourth Wall Entertainment are still alive and kicking! "
Klorer added that the six performers and one sound/light technician will remain below the suggested limit for gatherings.
"Our health and safety is also a priority as we work together to bring some entertainment to our friends and neighbors," she said.
Fourth Wall will also be sharing an online fundraiser during the event for an upcoming performance of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," as well as acknowledging generous sponsors and donors.
Fix yourself a "quarantini" and visit the Fourth Wall Entertainment Troupe Facebookpage at 7 p.m. to join in the fun.

COVID-19 restrictions have put a damper on many indoor activities, but the warm summer evenings are perfect for moving things outside. Check to see if your favorite restaurant or winery offers outdoor seating, and maybe even enjoy some entertainment under the stars.
Live blues al fresco in Sutter Creek
Saturday, July 18 at 7 p.m. The Doghouse Blues Band will play on the patio at Feist in Sutter Creek. The band is made up of some of the area's best musicians with guitar, drums, stand-up bass and keyboard. The band brings their version of classic roadhouse blues to Amador County.
The interior of the historic downtown building is closed, but the outdoor patio offers an intimate, charming atmosphere. Feist has overflow seating outside which offers significant social distancing. The winery tasting room requires masks whenever guests are away from their table. Reservations are recommended as there is very limited seating due to new capacity requirements.
Feist offers wood fired pizza made from local, organic ingredients, cheese and charcuterie, salads, desserts, award winning craft wines and a variety of beverages.
Tickets are $10 and are available at the tasting room or at feistwines.com

Despite its ample challenges, the quiet solitude of quarantine can be conducive to learning something new. Fortunately, our local arts councils have stepped up to the plate to provide us with an array of virtual events and remote classes to pique your interest this weekend.
Art from Home!
In response to COVID-19, the Amador County Arts Council has launched a number of opportunities for creative respite so that you and your family can maintain wellness by engaging in the arts through social media and online resources.
The Art from Home! page of the arts council's website showcases a wide range of remote activities including free guitar lessons with local professional musician Jon Mulvey, a creative writing series, a home crafting hour every day with instructor Molly Allen, Digital Poetry SLAM! and digital dance parties every Friday from 8-9 p.m.
The site also features a virtual gallery of art created by Amador County high school students.
Visit amadorarts.org to get involved.
ArtSpirit 2020
Brought to you by the Calaveras County Arts Council, ArtSpirit showcases artwork by Calaveras teens during March, Arts in Education month. This is a wonderful way to get the kids'' artwork into the public eye and get them the recognition they deserve.
Normally the council would have a reception for the kids, where they are given awards and accolades. Due to the COVID-19 emergency, reception for ArtSpirit 2020 was postponed. In the meantime, the council created an online gallery for you to see some of the work the kids created.
?You can view the gallery for ArtSpirit 2020 and years past by visiting calaverasarts.org.
The website also features a long list of online arts resources, from virtual tours of international museums, to music lessons and aid for professional artists impacted by COVID-19.
Keep calm and create!

It''s going to be an unusual Fourth of July weekend, with most fireworks events canceled and few options for safe family fun. Still, you may be able to enjoy a socially-distanced barbecue at one of the many outdoor venues now open across the Mother Lode. Use caution, wear a mask, and be sure to check in advance for availability!
Some New Melones camping, day use reopened; Natural Bridges open
An Enterprise article by Davis Harper

The Tuttletown Recreation Area on New Melones Lake is now open for day use and camping, along with the popular Natural Bridges trail in Vallecito and its associated parking area, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) announced in a news release Tuesday.
Parking is limited on USBR land, and visitors will be turned away when lots fill up.
Visitors can purchase interagency, annual day use and boat launch passes at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center and Museum lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
The museum portion of the visitor center will remain closed and the bureau will implement building capacity limits to meet state facility reopening guidelines.
Facility restrooms may not be fully supplied with hand soap or hand sanitizer, and all visitors should continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the bureau stated.
Both the Glory Hole and Tuttletown campgrounds have been closed since March 30, due to COVID-19, New Melones Park Manager Cynthia Davenport told the Enterprise June 24.
Davenport said secure gates did well to keep visitors out of the two recreation areas, but it was more difficult to enforce closures at the Natural Bridges trailhead and other outlying areas.
Staff reported that someone had cut a hole in a nearby fence to access the trail, Davenport told the Enterprise in a previous interview.
Davenport said since opening June 23, it's been quiet, likely "because it is the middle of the week and very hot."
Reopening the three recreational areas and facilities required approval from the White House, CDC and local public health authorities, the release states.
The Department of Interior, which governs the bureau, is working with federal, state and local authorities to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a "phased approach to increase access on a site-by-site basis."
For health and safety of the public and some maintenance issues, according to the bureau, the following facilities will remain closed:
-Campgrounds and day use areas in the Glory Hole Recreation Area
-Tuttletown RV dump station
-Glory Hole fish cleaning station and RV dump station
-Administration Office and Visitor Center Museum exhibits
The New Melones Lake Marina off Glory Hole Road is open, and customers should contact the marina for more information at 785-3300.

Welcome to the Calaveras Enterprise weekly email newsletter.
Happy new year! We've said goodbye to 2020 and ushered in 2021. Our hope here at the Enterprise is for a prosperous year for you all.
We ended this year by looking at the top 10 stories on calaverasenterprise.com and it was a mixed bag of major stories from throughout the entire year.
Reporter Noah Berner opened up a story on a shutter in Mokelumne Hill that has spent many years in a tree but has found new life in an art installation.
Dakota Morlan caught up with county staff to take a look at their efforts to complete a decorative water wheel at the Calaveras County Government Center.
And in Sports, Guy Dossi shared photos from throughout the past year. He also delved into how other sportswriters from the region have tackled high school sports coverage, and what's to come in 2021.
Coming up
We will begin our new year's coverage by, of course, continuing to cover the pandemic and its impact on the Mother Lode.
We will also share how local businesses can apply for grants and other funding opportunities to stay afloat.

Usher in the new year by feeding your creativity with these upcoming artistic opportunities!
Sutter Creek Gallery
Sutter Creek Gallery is returning to Main Street, Sutter Creek, after an absence of almost a year. In January, the gallery will be displaying local art and offering custom matting and framing services at 40B Main Street. The cooperative members are excited to have a new home and, based on comments received from the community, others are also looking forward to our return.
Moving in will take place in early January with an opening date as soon as displays are in place. Twenty artists will be showing original paintings, prints and cards, photographs, jewelry, pottery, gourds, and fiber arts. The cooperative believes that "art is for everyone" and the prices reflect that theme. New art is continuously brought into the gallery, making each visit a special experience.
The gallery provides some of the best framing services in the area with competitive prices utilizing about 75 different styles of frames and a variety of mat colors. The gallery will frame personal works of art, your favorite piece purchased elsewhere, or any artwork purchased at the gallery, all to match individual tastes and d?cor.
Once fully open, gallery hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Monday. Personal appointments can be arranged to view the artwork or to order framing. For information or to make an appointment call 209-267-0228. The gallery's website, suttercreekgallery.com, features individual pages on each artist and provides news about upcoming shows. Updates are also provided on the gallery's Facebook page.
