The Handful Chamber Choir - Revolution
|
The Handful invite you to join them for an evening of politically-charged, impassioned and thought-provoking choral music from the Baroque period through to the present day. Works by Shostakovich, Britten, Holst, McDowall, Dove, Vaughan Williams, Pearsall and Mauersberger create a colourful and exhilarating programme.
Advance, Democracy! is a piece of unabashed political propaganda by Britten, who along with Shostakovich and Mauersberger respond to events that shaped the 20th century. Britten paints a dark picture of the threat of dictatorship if democracy doesn't 'rise up and cry that what our fathers fought for we'll not allow to die'. Although this piece is now rarely performed, it is a real showpiece by Britten. The Ninth of January from Ten Poems on Texts by Revolutionary Poets by Shostakovich shows a different side to the apparently sardonic composer of the 5th Symphony, or the glitter of his Jazz Suites. These settings of socialist poems are dark, dramatic and at times operatic.
A selection of gorgeous, thought-provoking and reflective pieces by Vaughan Williams, Pearsall and Holst (amongst others) complete this fascinating and varied programme. 29th February 2020, 7.30pm St Mary's Church, Bathwick |

Bath Symphony Orchestra - Spring Programme
|
BSO are delighted to be presenting a programme of music on an operatic theme at their Spring Concert in The Roper Theatre.
Wagner’s sumptuous Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg opens the evening and is followed by pieces from the orchestral suites from Bizet’s Carmen. We hear highlights that include many of Bizet’s best-loved melodies capturing romance, high drama and exotic Spanish colour.
Our evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. After seeing a production of Carmen, Tchaikovsky first became obsessed with the idea of Fate controlling Destiny. The Fate motif permeates the symphony, however, joyful dance-like melodies ensure that optimism triumphs over gloom.

Bath Area Trams Conference |
Whenever trams/light rail has been re-installed in the UK - Croydon, London's docklands, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Nottingham and Blackpool - there is an immediate shift from cars to trams improving congestion, air pollution and general pleasantness, something that has never been achieved with buses alone.
Trams are zero emission and have much lower energy consumption than buses, over the long term offering a cheaper alternative. Buses are cheap to buy but expensive to operate, leading to long service gaps to cram people at bus stops.
If you are interested in discussing these issues further come along to the Bath Area Trams Conference on 8th February, where experts will share their knowledge and experiences on this important topic. A free lunch is provided!
