Sound: Who's Standard is it Anyway?

No matter where you live, you hear all sorts of sounds and noises. While wind turbines are quieter than typical everyday sounds, in some jurisdictions the evaluation of sound has become a focal point. The devil can be the details and the details can be a source of confusion that leads to mistrust and uncertainty. This panel will provide an overview of the on-going domestic and international acoustical standardization efforts related to the evaluation of sound at receivers, how those efforts are progressing and what to look forward to. The value in developing practical and repeatable methodologies as well as metrics that can be relied on during permitting and compliance will be highlighted in addition to discussing challenges that may arise if they are not.

From what is turning out to be the busiest tropical cyclone season in US history (partially driven by the warmest oceans ever observed), the worst Western US wildfires in over a century, all-time record warmth in the Arctic, and continued reduction in polar sea ice, all these are indicators of more extreme weather patterns that can and will directly affect monthly and seasonal anomalies of the wind resource."

The 2020 Wind Resource & Project Energy Assessment Virtual Summit begins today, and there's still time to register! The virtual summit will kick off promptly at 1 PM ET today, September 28, with three pre-conference bonus webinars all about the hot topic of remote sensing.

SESSION HIGHLIGHT:

Offshore Wind Resource Assessment

Offshore wind in the US represents a vast untapped energy resource, and many states have set sizeable offshore wind capacity targets to take advantage of this new frontier. As the first offshore specific session of the 2020 AWEA Wind Resource & Project Energy Assessment Virtual Summit, a key objective of these presentations will be to highlight the notable differences between onshore and offshore wind resource assessment. The NY Bight lease areas will be featured as a case study for estimating long-term wind resource characteristics and suitability inputs with limited onsite data. Special attention will be paid to floating lidar for measurement campaigns, particularly with regard to the risk and uncertainty associated with this technology. In addition, the accuracy of mesoscale modeling and value of different WRF configurations in offshore environments will be explored.

Understanding the Bulk Power System Executive Order:

DOE Request for Information

Wednesday, July 15, 2020 | 3:00 - 4:00 PM ET

On May 1, 2020, the White House issued the Executive Order on Securing the United States Bulk Power System (BPS). This executive order declares "a national emergency with respect to the threat to the United States bulk-power system," citing the intent of foreign adversaries to create and exploit vulnerabilities in BPS electric equipment to adversely affect U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economic activity.

Pursuant to the Executive Order, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a request for information (RFI) on the bulk power system on July 8, 2020. The RFI states that DOE is interested in improving utility owner/energy asset/operations risk assessment by incorporating the identification of enterprise risk associated with supply chain vendor/services into the acquisition systems process, and poses a set of open-ended questions to industry stakeholders. The deadline to submit responses to DOE is August 7, 2020.

The 2020 Wind Project Siting and Environmental Compliance Virtual Summit begins today, and there's still time to register! The virtual summit will kick off promptly at 12:30 PM ET today, September 30, with four pre-conference bonus webinars, deep dive discussions, and the Virtual Marketplace.

Webinar and the live stream session topics include:

AWEA invites the submission of abstracts for its 2021 Operations & Maintenance and Safety Conference on February 24 - 25 in Round Rock, TX. This is your opportunity to share your expertise in safety, training, O&M application, and emerging technology with attendees at North America's largest annual O&M and safety conference and exhibition.

This unique event is where the industry comes together to recognize unique challenges and identify solutions in health and safety, operations and maintenance, workforce training and development, and quality assurance.
