Last week I was telling you about how upbeat everyone was feeling with the news about the vaccine and a heap of other good news.

It was a Happy Day.. you can read about it here.

This week it''s back to a regular level of stress as hopes of a Brexit Deal this Christmas diminish. By Sunday we might have some more firm news one way or another.

But it''s not looking good as the ports are already jammed, booking a container from Asia is like trying to get tickets to the Queen''s last garden party.

Coco was telling me even after getting a booking, they can increase the prices an hour before loading and tough luck, take it or leave it attitude.

It''s a bloodbath.. add to this a self imposed Brexit mess on top of a looming recession, on top of Christmas, on top of covid. What the jeepers is happening!!?

So annoying when the glib government ministers keep saying British business needs to be ready for Brexit, and how much money they have spent on educating us. Websites with bad links, unanswered questions, changing scenarios, confusion and useless webinars. 

Good job we have been getting ready for Brexit for the last three years. Making our own plans. 

In Slovakia Tomas is busy negotiating extra warehouse space, he managed to get 200 pallets in a warehouse across the road. In Spain we just this week racked out another 1000 sq meters of warehouse space.

Plus two new jobs in Spain and several in Slovakia.. are you sure you are taking back control Boris?

All that business that used to come from the UK to Europe will now go from Europe to Europe.. this must be happening across many companies and industries.

Not bad.. this is one days work. There is still blue sky in Spain. The English and French versions of our Spain websites are 90% ready. AWArtisan.eu  and AWArtisan.fr   If you are outside the UK, and worried about getting  supplies.. DON''T WORRY!!   We have Plan A  and B and C..  whatever happens we have ways to keep you supplied.

Tomas, Katka and Raul (and me) have been devising plans like mad. The shipping companies have plans.. but could be expensive.

My favoured plan is to load a lorry once a week with all the export orders and take it to Slovakia.. to the shipping depot.. AW Slovakia imports it and then reinvoices to you our customers. Since shipping from Slovakia is cheaper than UK, and the cost of the truck would be about ?1.50 per carton.. it could even cost about the same to ship. Watch this space.. but don''t Worry!!

Despite the container congestion, miraculously we are still receiving containers.. This week Salt Lamps came from  Pakistan.. so lots back in stock.. see below. On this shipment.. a new product.

This is Bryant''s baby. Normally Tomas and I devise, develop and design new products.. Normally this is best done face to face but these days it''s been done remotely and slowly.. 

So Bryant our imports manager fancied having a go.. he is the proud father.. of a set of salt lamp shot glasses. 

A bit more about the container crisis.. I know some readers like to know about the business nitty gritty. 

Normally it costs about $2000 to get a 40ft container from Asia to the UK.. give or take $500 depending on supply and demand. This week the market price hits $10,000 and prone to change even after booking. 

So that''s an extra $8,000 - and since an average container of gift products might hold $80,000 of stock... you can do the maths - it''s adding 10% to the cost.  

With bulky or low value products (like food basics) which won''t be anything like this value..  the percent increase could be 30% or 40% in some cases. Scary.

On top of massive spending by governments, I can''t see how hyperinflation can be avoided. 

So on that bombshell.. let''s move on to something more cheerful.

It was a good day on Wednesday as the vaccine approval came in. But it seemed like everything came right on Wednesday.

So on Wednesday, the warehouse deal finally, finally completed. If you have been following the story you will know it''s been a bit complicated. And if it had gone to pot it could easily mean that AW are out on our ears looking for a new warehouse.. but all the moving parts miraculously came together this week. On Monday the funds arrived from the USA pension fund, on Friday the last details of the ten year lease were resolved - Katka signed the lease, funds went to the aerospace company selling the building, and the deeds changed hands and the lease came into being at that moment and AW has official secure tenure. Affinity Park is ours!!

On that Wednesday morning I''m driving to Malaga to do some interviews with our shortlisted candidates for two new jobs at the Spain warehouse. On the way I have to stop at the car hire company, they asked me to bring my car back - said I couldn''t extend the hire anymore. I must get a new contract. I''m not into flash cars particularly, so I usually hire a modest car. The car I wanted wasn''t available.. the girl on the desk asked me if I need a bigger car? I said no, a small car is fine, she asked if I had a family. Strange question? Yes I said, but it''s a long story, my wife is in China. I haven''t seen her since the 15th of January last year. "It''s a long covid related story, I''m alone here" - I told her. Behind the mask I could see warm concerned eyes. "It''s only two seats but I''m going to give you this car for the same price". A really nice bright Santa red SLK soft top Merc.. Small but super sporty. I''m even more happy. It''s the bargain of the year.

In the car I''m tuned to "Times Radio" - have you tried it?, there is an app or webpage. I love it. Friendly chatty news.  And on that morning all about the new vaccine. Lockdown officially over in england, plenty of tiers anyway. But still good news: lots of shops can re-open.  Are you opening up? We put a Christmas tree up at AW HQ, and also had a light dusting of snow.. so it''s official - it''s Christmas. Plus Rodrigo is wearing his "Let it Snow" top.. so it must be.

At AW-Artisan in Malaga, the whole team spill out of the office and warehouse to check out my car..  taking selfies with the car. They are all happy, because we just had a record month and everyone has a big bonus. It''s all-go in the office and they are doing virtual showroom visits all day. Via whatsapp they take the customers on a tour of the showroom explaining and demonstrating products. Spanish people love to chat no? 

Whilst this is going on Toni and I do interviews - we have one booked every half an hour.. and not one misses, everyone turns up.  

When you see a lot of people, they can get mixed up in your mind afterwards, so to help me focus - I use this old trick..  I give them all nicknames, which I scribble on the notes. Then I like to sleep on it, think carefully about how they will fit in the team, what talents they can bring and try to visualize the team dynamic. I just chatted to Toni and it seems we both settled on the same two people. Jesus, who lives in Benalmadena and Attila who was originally from Hungary. 

So Toni is calling "Jesus of Benalmadena" and "Attila the Hun" right now to give them the good news..

Meanwhile we are working hard to get your orders out. It''s absolutely peak time, and with some shops reopening and restocking it''s putting some pressure.  We slipped a bit behind, but are doing our best to catch up.. there are more orders being shipped that ever before at AW, this week three containers came. Two from Indonesia and one from India.. so lots back in stock.. and lots selling out. Exports to the EU are up 800% as customers panic about getting stock after Brexit. So it''s a bit crazy. I know James and his team are working flat out.

Dusan the Aromatic''s factory manager is also stressed, taking on lots of extra staff. He is doing his best to up production of bath bombs and shower steamers enough to meet orders. But Greenman soaps are now back. The beast from France is in full production.. next up guest soaps will be back soon.

Greetings from Spain

My goodness it''s full on all go, multiple things all happening at once. It''s like the whole of AW from Indonesia, to India, to China, to Slovakia, to Spain, to the UK has slipped into some kind of warp drive.
Multiple containers being loaded - whole swathes of new products arriving - new equipment being installed, new people being started, new websites being (almost) launched, the new warehouse being organised.
Talk about full on activity and all in the face of covid second or third waves, Christmas trade and frantic preparations for whatever flavour of Brexit is going to be fausted upon us.

I''m in Spain at the moment trying to give some TLC to our talented and dedicated team here. Because of covid they have been left somewhat to their own devices, but that''s not to say Toni and his team have not made great leaps forward. They have - with the most beautiful showroom at AW, the most delightful websites, the neatest and most organised warehouse. I''m proud of them. But now I''m here, I can help them move to the next level.. we got a truck full of racking from the UK, that we took out of Parkwood warehouse (in Sheffield to make room for the Beast) - the extra racking will give them spaces for quite a bit more stock, and enable a rapid expansion of the product ranges. And it''s all happening fast. Very soon there will be a French and Europe wide website - all ready to cope with that Brexit moment. 

Meanwhile in Sheffield at our Aromatic Factory, the Beast from France arrived. Oh boy.. it''s bigger than we quite appreciated even from the pictures and the written dimensions. It''s a soap plodder to replace our old faithful one that was destroyed in the fire.. this was the only one we could find at short notice.. and it will produce like 10x what the old setup could. What it does is take sacks of eco-friendly soap noodles in at one end - mixed with all the good stuff.. aromatics (essential oils, botanicals etc) and mince them up into a plasticine type state and squeeze it out with huge force from various shaped dyes.. That''s the first part.. the second part still is essentially by hand, cutting, stamping, molding, finishing and packing. Quite labour intensive, but with this bit of kit we really can ramp up supplies - so we expect to build up good stocks and a good range of products.. fast selling beautiful high end soaps your customers will love.. and you (hopefully) will love that we can keep you supplied like never before.
We have the electricians wiring everything up today, all the packaging and raw materials have been delivered, staff will be trained on Monday next week.. we hope to be in production by Tuesday or Wednesday.. I''ll update you.

So last week I was telling you about the mine shaft problem under our new warehouse.. It seems like there are eight mine shafts beneath our feet that could at any moment collapse plunging all your stock into a big black sink hole.. obviously our new landlord (an investment fund) wouldn''t want to buy the warehouse and we would be out on our ear.  No-one can find the papers that prove the mine shafts have been made safe.. Just now as I type this newsletter, Mike, our potential landlord, called me.. He told me.. "Don''t worry David, it''s going to be OK, we can''t find the papers but the original developer has confirmed they did exist, and they are a highly respected public company.. so we are happy to take a view on it". 
Phew! I can tell you it''s another load of stress lifted.. similar to when the insurance company finally (after way too long) told us they were accepting the claim. Like a huge weight lifting from your shoulders. 
2020 - who needs Netflix..  just too much drama already..

I''m sure you know this.. but in the UK this is the weekend that the clocks go back.. or is it forward? I''m easily confused.. Anyway the thing is that the nights will suddenly be DARKER.. and that triggers that Christmas-is-coming part of the brain. The  Xmas songs will start a-jingling, talk of turkey and cranberry stuffing, and my friends the "Hunt for Gifts for Gran & Co" is officially underway. Usually when the clocks go back and halloween and bonfire night are upon us - the gift trade leaps into a frantic higher gear.  How it will work this year (in the age of coronavirus) is unknown.. but one thing is for sure.. those with an online sales channel are going to be the biggest winners.. we can already see which type of customers are ordering big these days. Greetings from Spain.

Happy Halloween Weekend. Even if it is a lockdown Halloween I hope you can have some fun. 
Here in Spain they have just imposed an evening curfew - from 11pm to 6am..  Some people are upset about it.. but for me 11pm is well past my bedtime and I wake up with the sunrise at about 7.40am. So I don''t think I will get into trouble :)
Last week I was telling you about how things were slipping into "Warp Speed" at AW.. You can read about it here.

If you are new to this newsletter - I have been writing it every Friday, from wherever I happen to be.. for over nine years.. the first was from Thailand during Chinese New Year 2011.. Tomas, James and Kane have been hands on in the warehouse in Sheffield.. really making it happen introducing an improved system. Still away to go, but almost all products are located, so easy to find, more label printers on the packing benches, more packing benches, an improved software system that automates more. Result an extra few hundred orders a day. We are catching up with orders and improving efficiency. It''s amazing what some extra space and a bit of hard work and talent can do. Well done guys.

As well as catching up dramatically - it''s all happening - two containers from Indonesia, one from China and one from India. So lots of new stock this week. The first Indonesia container had stock of the Natural Coco Lamps.. we practically sold out in hours of putting them back in stock. But more stock will shortly be available. It''s great that the Indonesian stuff sells so well, this makes me personally very happy.  Those artisans in Bali and Java we work with more than need the re-orders. It feels good to be able to support them with trade.

Regular readers will know I was in Bali locked down for a few months - able to work quietly with Ringo developing the products that are arriving. Bali is of course very reliant on tourism and a lot of the artisans supplied local gift shops. As the tourists all went home, the streets fell silent and this part of their trade dried up all together. The central wholesale market in Denpasar closed, partly because of covid, but also because no international buyers could come. So most export trade also shrank.
Inland Bali is a peaceful place even in normal times. But after lockdown it regressed to an Eden like idle, rural, green, lush, tranquil, no planes above, almost no traffic. When we called on a supplier to do business - we felt like we were tiptoeing through paradise.  
It was a special bitter/sweet time - brought abruptly to an end by the fire at our warehouse in Sheffield.. 
I have this picture on my laptop desktop.. it''s  beautiful right?...  but look very closely and you can tell it is in the time of corona.

So with no tourists many of the workers have gone home to the farms and rural life, living simply from the land. But there are still car leases, mortgages, electric bills to pay. So you would not believe how grateful our suppliers are to be supported by orders from AW (actually from you.. or even we could say - your customers). This story is repeated but with urgency in India, Nepal and Morocco.  

More news from our Aromatics factory.. the "Beast" started to produce its first soaps this week.. we started making Chill Pills again.. and we keep expanding bath bomb production.. Hopefully soon we can fully meet demand.
The problems with mine shafts discovered under our new warehouse has - I understand - been resolved, the lease is in the final stages of negotiations.. so hopefully we can take official occupation on a brand new ten year lease very shortly.
Maybe by next week.. at which stage, I will announce the new name for our building. It''s been decided, and I think it is apt, classy and suggested by only one of our customers. To be revealed soon.. maybe next week..

So here we are heading for more lock-downs across Europe.. it''s a strange and sometimes terrifying world we live in. Christmas is coming and (even in the time of corona) - one thing remains true. Giving a gift an act of love, in which we (as gift traders) are privileged to be part of. Whatever they say, however they classify it..  an act of love is an essential item in these difficult days. We normally have a Halloween costume competition at AW - this year we cancelled it (of course) although a few staff turned up dressed rather strangely all the same.

Happy Black Friday.. hope it''s going well.

Cyber Monday is next, and this year is where it is at.

Here in Malaga we are recruiting warehouse staff, not surprisingly (perhaps) in the space of a few hours, we had 200 applicants for two jobs. 

What is surprising is the number of be-suited hopefuls who apparently don''t trust emails, preferring to turn up in person to deliver their CV.  It''s a pretty clever trend in job hunting techniques. You have got to be impressed.

Last Christmas (and it now seems another age) we were training the AW-Artisan team after an intense recruiting round.. now it''s time to expand the team.

Last Christmas - was a different world. For sure it''s a strange time we live in. All the popular usual gifts from a year ago are out of style. Who wears perfume or lipstick these days, my go-to gift of theatre tickets are practically off the table. Skiing trips a big no no.

But since we are spending more time in the home, things that make us feel more at home. Homely things are what sells and we can see it in what''s trending at AW.. Candle sales are sky high. Dinner Candles 214% up Soy Pot candles 128%.

I can spend all day looking at stats, checking the trends and sometimes strange unexpected things happen. Essential oils of course you will know already are booming right now (unbranded up 69% - everything up at least 40%) and could be higher if we could get the supplies it''s hard secure stock right now. Unexpectedly Smudge Sticks are up (351%).. is everyone sat around in lockdown doing weird stuff at home.. yoga and meditation.. wafting herbal aromatics and chanting incantations? New stocks due in shortly - I''m told.

Gemstone Face Rollers..  are newish, we didn''t have them last Christmas but sales are 50% month on month. Home is Home Candle Pots are also new - and this year''s perfect candle gift.

It was Twenty Five years ago today that Ancient Wisdom was born.

I have this afternoon been arranging our most recent order received from Ancient Wisdom this week in our shop, getting ready for when lockdown ends here in Ireland (hopefully on 1st December). I had come home intending a quiet night in (as usual during lockdown) and just before I closed the lid of my laptop, I remembered it was Friday and I had not yet seen your newsletter, I always love to read your newsletters and reading them usually results in an hour or so browsing through your website filling up my cart :) I opened your email and read through it, as I scrolled down I see the picture of your new warehouse, imbedded the text "Affinity Park" I thought to myself "Oh look, they have called their new warehouse Affinity Park, I suggested that" Of course I thought someone else must have also suggested the same name... I never win anything! It wasn''t until I had read the text surrounding the picture for the second or third time that the penny finally dropped... it was ME!! I jumped up and punched the air above my head... Frightened the life out of my partner Chloe! Haha.

WOW!!!! I am actually speechless!!! This is amazing!! I can not begin to explain just how happy we are!

I remember when my family and I woke to the news that you had had a fire at your warehouse, we assumed it was nothing serious as we had received an email from you guys, and then when I saw the gruesome images on the news I felt sick to the pit of my stomach, I could not believe it. The sense of loss I felt was immense. I remember pacing up and down the kitchen, a million thoughts going through my mind. Throughout my journey with Ancient Wisdom I feel I have been made to feel like one of the family, and that is genuinely a great feeling!! Of course I was concerned as to whether anyone had been hurt or worse, and the relief I felt once I had learned everyone was OK was great - but short lived. My thoughts then turned to the AW business, gutted by flames. I guess I underestimated you and Ancient Wisdom! I was sad for the people who might be losing their jobs and the businesses that would face disruption, all in the midst of the pandemic - it really could not have happened at a worse time! And then I thought of yourself, stuck out in Bali. I imagined how you might be feeling. Needless to say, as you will know only too well, that was not a good day! Like I said, I really have been made to feel like one of the AW family, so felt an incredible amount of many feelings, all of them sad at that time. 

Since then I have read in awe your newsletters. You have spoken about hope and determination throughout. Frankly the way you have dealt with this has been inspirational! I am sure many may have curled up in a ball and given up! But not you or the AW Heros. WOW!

I spoke to Mauro a while after the fire, he told me of the "nightmarish" scenes he faced when he went to site. I can not even begin to imagine how yourself or any  of the AW heros felt right then. I think myself and many of your customers shared somewhat in your grief.

And now look at where you are and what you guys have achieved... A new bigger warehouse, not only have you got much of the stock lost back in stock, but you are also adding new and fantastic lines regularly, your dispatch is currently the quickest I have ever known! What you and the AW Heros have achieved is amazing and to be naming your new warehouse "Affinity" has well and truly overwhelmed me! I won''t bore you with my life story, But like you I also started off on street corners at markets selling bits & bobs, this and that. My family and I have had to overcome some real difficult times over the past few years and then in January when we moved here to Ireland, we felt like we had found our "Affinity" and then when we started our business again we found "Affinity" in that and then when we found Ancient Wisdom we found "Affinity" in our supplier...

Needless to say the word "Affinity" and its meaning is very dear to our family and from the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank you for using it to name your new warehouse!

Whilst here, can I please bring your attention to one thing? Mauro... What can I say? This man is an absolute LEGEND! The customer services I have received from Mauro, time and time again has been second to none! I call myself his very own pest! However he is always extremely helpful and obliging. No issue to small, no problem too big. It seems Mauro can sort anything. He is a true credit to Ancient Wisdom. I always hope there will be a way I can thank him for all of his help. Please pass on my thanks, and hopefully once the lockdowns ect are all over and we get back to some sort of normality I will come to Ancient Wisdom and thank him and yourself and all the AW Heros personally.

Greeting from lockdown Europe

It''s a lockdown across swathes of Europe again. Friday the 13th to stress us more.. and  only the glimmer of a vaccine hope to keep us cheerful. 
That and watching Netflix, the number one show right now is "Queen''s Gambit" - I loved it - it made me cry at the end. It''s about a young girl, an orphan, who is thought to play chess by the janitor in the basement, and goes on to become world champion.  A feel good production, with some ups and downs and in the end it''s a story about friendship and collaboration.. and now everyone will spend lockdown playing chess. It''s a major trend.. So we have some lockdown / chess set deals below.

In Mr Chatterjee factory he has Muslims, Christians and  Buddist and all cellibrate Diwali togeather. Lets hope the vaccine is the light to fight the covid evil.

On Tuesday next week.. It will be incredibly 25 years ago that Ancient Wisdom was born. As they say on Strictly "it''s been a hell of a journey". Just like any good Netflix production, a story with quite a few ups and downs, but thankfully every cloud has had a silver lining..  Born on a street market in Sheffield, all that time ago.. I can remember it well. Here (if you have time) is the story of that first day.. 

It was a wet cold Thursday morning a long time before Google and Facebook, and as I laid out my market stall on a Sheffield street I was more than apprehensive about what people would think. But I was ready by eight, my humble offering laid out on that simple stall.. and stomping from foot to foot I awaited my first customer.

A few months earlier, I''d been reading a book called "Ancient Wisdom" - now out of print. The book highlighted many things that seem out of place in history - the pyramids, Stonehenge etc. At the same time I''d been researching aromatherapy. It struck me that essential oils had been used for thousands of years and ancient people must have known more about them - (healing and enchanting) than perhaps we did. So I put the two together and devised the brand of "Ancient Wisdom" slowly (very slowly, no Internet remember) I found supplies of oils. I found a potter down in Stoke who made me my own design of oil burner, and invested in a pallet load of candles.

The truth was I was stone broke, every penny and more I put into my unusual retail business. In those days no-one had any idea what aromatherapy was, oil burners were a new fangled thing and this was Yorkshire!
The first person to approach was a well built lady of colour with a broad Yorkshire accent. Picking up a bottle of Lavender oil she asked me bruskly "what''s it good for lad?" Oh I said recalling my Julia Lawless quotes.. "it''s good for relaxing, will help you sleep and if you burn yourself it''s an amazing healing oil".

Well I can remember it clear as day.. she looked at me, took me in with big brown eyes, and in a low voice said; "You are completely bloody bonkers". And wandered off to the fruit and veg.
You can imagine how I felt. The first day I sold one lavender oil and gave some tea tree away to a spotty teenage girl. I went home and almost packed it in.

The next day, I decided I need to get my act together, and made an offer, Lavender Oil, Oil Burner and a nightlight...I piled the oil burners up in bread baskets with a sprinkling of potpourri for good measure. for ?4.50. I sold my first oil burner set in five minutes... and Ancient Wisdom was born. Soon I would sell fifty sets a day and gradually found customers for my range of essential oils.

I devised a range of Fragrance Oils - I put my heart into that range working nights to get it right, I listened to customer feedback and I''m pretty sure that nice lady who rejected my lavender became a regular customer for fragrance oils.

That was, amazingly.. almost 25 years ago. 
On 16-11-20 it is Ancient Wisdom''s 25th Birthday.

Since then.. the company has grown, with a few ups and downs, to be an international Giftware company, we still sell Lavender Oil, Fragrance oils and Oil Burners.
And also 10,000 other products to more than 80,000 customers all over the world. With warehouses in Indonesia, China, Slovakia, Spain and the UK.. we really couldn''t have got here without you.Recently following an horrendous fire in July (another down).. we moved to our new warehouse in Sheffield (a huge up!) - from here it is onwards. 
The warehouse has no name.. so we asked for suggestions.. and had hundreds, and after much debate we have decided that the best suggestion came from someone called "Ben" who posted his idea to the AW Blog page

Christmas Greetings from all at AW

What can I say in this final seasonal message of 2020?

It''s been one hell of a year, as I detailed in the "look-back" email on Friday last. (You can read it here).

Now we face the final few hours of trading.. many of you will be dealing with last minute gift buyers. The last minute rush. I''m sure it''s not a normal Christmas for you. 

It''s been a strange old time, and for sure 2020 will be one year no-one will forget.

About a hundred orders have been trapped because of the Dover blockade. It could have been much worse, if it had been last week for example, but thank you for the generous understanding of all those people affected.

These are crazy times and with Covid and Brexit we will have more challenges to face ahead. 

But now at AW we are winding down, cleaning up. sending out the very last batch of orders. Of course we want to leave our desks and workspaces tidy and organised ready for whatever 2021 brings.

Normally at this time we gather in the office at AW HQ all in our festive gear, we always order a massive pile of pizzas and get in a few beers and bottles of wine. We have a jolly little end of year party with xmas songs playing and people larking about. I always deliver a short speech and then we have group pictures and then everyone hugs each other before heading home... 

No speech, no larking about, no hugs this year, but plenty of heartfelt emotional best wishes are nevertheless being expressed.

In like manner, I would like to express my profound thanks to all our customers who came with us on this bumpy year, who have supported us through thick and thin.

I would wish you - on behalf of everyone at AW - all a peaceful, safe and loving Christmas with your family and friends. I hope you can have a good time, even if it is over Zoom and Whatapp..

The less said about the last year the better.. let''s hope 2021 is going to be prosperous and happy... and a lot less trouble.

We are not out of the woods yet, there are still a lot of hurdles to overcome. But you can be sure AW will be there to support and help you develop your gift trading business.. whatever they throw at us.

Over the years life at AW has always been an adventure, none as extreme as 2020 but nevertheless it''s always been an exciting ride.

I''m hoping the vaccine is good and quick and we will all be allowed to travel, not least so I can see Coco in China. She is our China agent and my wife.. now almost a year since she was here in Spain for New Year.  

I''m also missing Ringo our man in Indonesia and lots of contacts including Mr Chatterjee in India. Make sure you add this email address to your contacts, so you don''t miss out on this years adventures.

So at 11pm last night the UK (most of it) left the EU, and Boris like Moses will lead us into this new exciting promised land where he assures us we will Prosper Mighterly.. 

At 7am this morning Tomas Whatsapped me.. it''s all going wrong already!!  Last time he did that it was because our main warehouse burned down.. so I was a little stressed. Turns out that all our websites with the .EU domains had stopped working. Including the very busy AWGifts.eu site.. Sorry your not in the EU now.. you can''t use that.  Major stress, Raul our IT wizard who lives in KL, Malaysia was already on it.. those domains should be registered to an EU AW company not the UK company.. 

Haha.. so off to a flying start.. 

But this is what we expect, it''s going to be a wild west for a bit as things realign, whatever happens, stay calm we will find away.

So, many of our customers - and maybe you - have thriving on-line businesses, and maybe you have customers in the EU..  

You can still supply them without all the new forms and red tape. AW products can be shipped direct to your customers, and as far as I know it''s completely legal. We have two warehouses in Europe one in Spain and one in Slovakia, each warehouse has a Dropshipping website. Slovakia: AW-dropship.eu  (in English) and Spain: AW-dropship.es  (in Spanish, but google will translate for you and it''s pretty easy to use). You will just need to register, then when you sell an AW product to a customer in Europe, you just need to add that customer address to your list and order the product and we do the rest - sending to your customer. Obviously you will need to make sure we have the product in stock in that warehouse before you sell it, but there is no stopping you drop-shipping to your EU customers and thus Prospering Mightily :-)

If you are an EU customer and normally order from the UK website. You can still do this of course, but as you will know there will be customs forms and delays. We also have a plan to get around this, and I''ll update you in the near future once we can be sure our systems are functioning. Alternatively you can order directly from our EU warehouses.. Spain: AWArtisan.eu  and Slovakia: AWGifts.eu  -  again you will need to register but these sites are in English. The Spain site is fairly new, so products are still being added but you can always use the online chat if something you need is missing and we can add for you.

Christmas Greetings from Spain

This dear friends is the last proper newsletter of 2020.

And what an Epic, Traumatic, Overwhelming,  Sad, Joyful, Stressful, Triumphant... if there is one word that describes 2020.. it''s probably one my mother would not approve of..

Everyone has had one hell of a year, I know many of you have lost loved ones, have struggled with covid hit business, have had to face unmanaged challenges. But together it is possible to pull through and even dare I say it be stronger and thrive.

If you have been following this newsletter you will know something of this extraordinary, unbelievable year at AW.

Last week I was telling you not to worry.. we have a Brexit plan.. You can read about it here.

This week if you will indulge me I''d like to share the 2020 AW journey with you.. below.

But first - some good news - a massive backlog of containers and stock deliveries have arrived at our warehouse in Sheffield. We have been seriously struggling to keep many products in stock for all the reasons you well know about, but this week we are happy to have lots of best selling lines back in stock.. containers and shipments from EU suppliers ahead of Brexit  came, two more containers from China, one from India, one from Indonesia. 

I can confidently say we are Lock Stocked and Loaded ready for the 2021 season of love - the sales, the run upto Valentines day, Mothers day, Easter (which could be a mini Christmas) and fathers day.. The season of love, we call it.. and AW is dare I say your best supplier at this time.  Check out the deals below. We can take orders upto 3pm on Tuesday 22nd December for dispatch this year. After that we will dispatch in the new year, your order placed early will mean early dispatch.

Here are the main events that come to mind as I review 2020 a year like no other.

January

My 60th birthday was perfect, surrounded by my friends, family including Coco, Tomas and Katka from AW and our new friends from AW Artisan Spain. A nice meal in Sinbad''s restaurant on the beachside, a lovely day all sat together at a long table (do you remember doing that) enjoying good food and wine chatting and enjoying each other''s company. My idea of a perfect time. One small shadow.. Mario, who is our company administrator in Spain, complained of feeling strange, the perfect gentleman he is, he joined us for the meal but insisted in not hugging and kissing all and sundry as usual - and placed himself at the end of the table and slightly away. He spent ten days in bed after with a mysterious illness, it was quite some time before he was back to full health - he is convinced he was an early victim. Two days later, I dropped my wife Coco at Malaga airport, she was heading home to China for Chinese new year. The plan was that I would go to Indonesia, India and then to meet back up in China in six weeks. Little did I know this was the last time I would see Coco this year..

February

Late Jan and early Feb is spent in the UK at AW HQ.. planning the future, working out what products to focus on to delight our customers - I''m especially excited about our new dropshipping website.

AW doesn''t do tradeshows, but we did showcase our Agnes and Cat brand at the Spring Fair in Birmingham. I drove down to visit the team and see how it was going. Coronavirus was just beginning to raise its ugly head, notices on the entrance if I remember asking recent visitors to China to get a temperature check. Nobody had any idea what was about to unfold. 

7th of Feb I fly to Kuala Lumpur. Meetings with our Pakistani salt lamp suppliers, a father and son business.  Also working all hours to get the dropshipping website finished with Raul the IT wizard who works out of KL. 

I notice people in the streets wearing masks, The hotel I stay at checks everyone''s temperature, supplies hand gel, and strictly only allows registered and guests into the lobby. There is an air of panic.

10th Feb the Dropshipping site is launched.. 

11th Feb - I take the flight to Bali.. Ringo meets me at the airport. 

The next two weeks are spent in a whirlwind of activity - recently moved to a new warehouse, I also want to make it the most beautiful warehouse in Bali.. 

While we are working, the covid crisis is slowly becoming apparent, but no panic, people selling homemade masks on street corners, government posters already advising keeping distance and washing hands (this is way ahead of the UK).

26th Feb I fly to Kolkata, India. Flights are normal - no special measures. Check into the Swisshotel close to the airport in the early hours of the 27th.

In the morning meet up for breakfast with Tomas - who arrived earlier and Mr Chatterjee, our man in India. It''s great to be back in India. 

March

We stay at the newly opened Denmark Tavern, a restored heritage hotel on the banks of the Ganges. We visit the children''s home  that AW supports, news of the pandemic is coming but we still high five all the kids. 

Later fly to Delhi to meet a whole range of suppliers, it''s hard work. Deep in the crammed and busy back streets of old Delhi building new relationships. I do remember thinking if a virus gets loose in here it could be hell.  

Rumours that India will close the airports and lockdown, seem fanciful at this stage.

We fly down to Goa for a few days'' rest and to meet our gemstones guy, who comes from nearby Mumbai. 

Flights are being cancelled. There is panic buying of masks, all the Japanese and Chinese tourists are wearing masks. Allsorts of rumours. Tomas and I decide maybe it is time to cut short the India trip - we manage to get a flight back to KL via Bengaluru.

Our flight to China has been cancelled, so we decide to go back to Bali, and see what happens. Anyway Tomas wants to see the new warehouse and has lots of product ideas.

We escaped India it turns out just in time.. days later all flights are cancelled.

By late March - it''s all kicking off.. Tomas decides it''s time to go back to the UK, and he actually gets out of Bali on the last flight before lockdown.

I stay hoping to find a way to go to China, or at the very least for Coco to come to Bali

April

Lockdown in UK.. Sales drop dramatically.  I''m trapped in Bali (which honestly could be worse). But tough decisions have to be made. We furlough most of the staff. Katka throws herself into making AW as covid safe as possible for the remaining staff.

It''s bleak.. we are making survival plans. All the shops are closed, how long can we survive? Will our customers'' businesses survive? I call and ask all our landlords for discounted rent, they all help - the new landlords in Spain (who are Chinese) give us 100% discount until whenever this is over. 

Sad news, my Father passed away, coronavirus - he was always there to help at AW, for a while a non executive director and always a wise advisor - a strange zoom memorial service.

May

My hotel in Bali closes down. There are no tourists left, I''m the only customer. So I need to find somewhere to stay, and new government regulations stop hotels from accepting new guests, I''m almost homeless in Bali.

Meanwhile in UK we are making soap like crazy, devising our own AW hand sanitisers. Tomas is working on designs for a range of face masks, Coco in China looking for suppliers. The new dropshipping site is booming.

Amazingly, sales are picking up.. so we start taking staff back off furlough.

I''m happy developing lots of new products with Ringo in Bali. We also make beautiful new offices and staff rooms at the warehouse.

June

What happened? Tomas and team are working twelve hour days, the aromatics factory is at full stretch. Extra shifts, so we can keep covid distance. It''s all go, we have gone from bust to boom in the space of a month.

June which is normally the quietest month of the year at AW turns out to be the best on record. 85% up. Lots of our switched on customers are moving to online sales, dropshipping goes crazy. We pay back all the rent to our landlords. Everyone except the vulnerable are taken off furlough. Where possible staff are working from home, covid restrictions and work pressure means everyone is exhausted.

Meanwhile Bali is like the Garden of Eden, no planes, no tourists, a gentle, green quiet place. Locals delighted to do business with us. I''m ashamed to say I was having a lovely lockdown.

At the end of June all the management at AW are sending each other well done emails.. in my last newsletter of June.. I write about how busy it''s been.. and I quote..

"Of course we are thankful for the business, a few weeks ago it seemed like the world would fall in. Who knows what the future holds.. Stay safe please, wear a mask.
Enjoy the weekend".

July

3rd of July, I will never forget being woken by Whatapp at 7am and seeing Tomas''s tear stained face framed by a massive fire. "David it''s over, it''s over"

Our main warehouse, factory and head office were engulfed in a huge fireball. Parkwood business park is on top of a hill, the whole of Sheffield could see the fire, one of the largest ever in Sheffield.

A eurobin in the carpark had self combusted at 11.23pm by midnight the fire had spread to the room where we kept the essential oils, which had spread to the area we were making hand sanitisers, alcohol in 1000kg containers.  There was a massive fireball explosion which a hot summer wind that night blowing exactly the right direction blew the fire like the bellows in a furnace through the warehouse block. All captured on the car park CCTV system. In two hours despite the fire brigade arriving in minutes it was a burned out shell. 

A rest in peace AW facebook page emerged the next day. Everyone assumed it was over.

9th July I managed to get on the international single flight out of Bali. On the 10th Tomas picked me up at Manchester airport, and drove me to see the devastation.

We had already made a recovery plan. Are we going to let this thing beat us? Or are we going to turn it around?

Within the week we had a dispatch department in operation,website revamped and was back in business.. the rebuild had started. 

By a stroke of luck the Facemasks had been delayed by two days and arrived after the fire - turned out to be a huge best seller.

August

The big search for a new warehouse.. the stress that the insurance company may not pay out.. re-ordering, rebuilding managing with almost no space in our surviving warehouse. 

All credit to the AW Heros, almost everyone pulled together, working amazingly well. Rebuilding the factory from scratch,  all our suppliers pulling out all the stops to help. The thousands of emails and messages of support our customers.

Finding a warehouse proved to be harder than imagined, a short list of ten dwindled to two or three.. there are not that many large warehouses empty and ready for occupation at short notice. 

The one place we liked was actually big.. three times bigger than our old place. The problem was the owners didn''t want to rent it, they needed to sell it. And the price was more money than AW could raise in the circumstances. The answer was a longshot.. find an investment fund to buy it, and then rent it back to us..

Stressful in the extreme, so much uncertainty.. insurance company not communicating.. deals grinding slowly along. 

But it all comes together and we persuade enough people to trust us, the owners of what will be Affinity Park allow us to use the 100,000 sq ft warehouse on license pending the sale and lease back. The insurance company finally paid up, and we can afford to move forward. 77 days after the fire we got the keys to Affinity Park.

October

A huge backlog of shipments arrive at the new warehouse, the offices are quickly set up. Everyone again is working round the clock.

We really are back in business. Meanwhile the factory rebuild continues, we buy a big machine - nicknamed the beast to produce natural soaps from a French company. If you have been reading these newsletters you will know the details.

The stress takes a toll on my body..I need a change of pace and a rest.. once the train is back on track I return to my home in Spain to focus on the rest of AW. The Spain warehouse is now really busy and Slovakia also.

Coronavirus has had an unnatural boost to business as online trade booms and people across Europe want things to make their homes more cozy, safe and aromatic.

November

Now the focus moves to Brexit, and how we are going to manage when half our trade is to EU customers.

Sales across AW are good, 92% up on last year. Seems incredible that we could go from despair to boom to bust and back to boom in such a short time.

The property fund finalises the deal and the lease we have been simultaneously negotiating comes into being.  

We also celebrate our 25th Anniversary of AW - it''s 25 years to the day I sold the first bottle of Lavender oil on an outdoor market in Sheffield (story here).. And Ben in Ireland comes up with the name "Affinity Park" - for the new warehouse which we all instantly love.

I''m still missing my wife Coco, we speak everyday but almost a year is a long time.

The vaccine gives some hope that international travel may start up and it is possible to go to China.

Borris says have a Merry Little Christmas.. 

Will be very little in my case.. but there is hope. All the people around me at that birthday table in January are still with us, and all the rest of the AW team in the UK and around the world .. but for sure they changed, forged in that fire that quite literally changed them into AW Hero''s that will take AW into 2021. Come with us on the journey!

Christmas Greetings from Spain

This dear friends is the last proper newsletter of 2020.

And what an Epic, Traumatic, Overwhelming,  Sad, Joyful, Stressful, Triumphant... if there is one word that describes 2020.. it''s probably one my mother would not approve of..

Everyone has had one hell of a year, I know many of you have lost loved ones, have struggled with covid hit business, have had to face unmanaged challenges. But together it is possible to pull through and even dare I say it be stronger and thrive.

If you have been following this newsletter you will know something of this extraordinary, unbelievable year at AW.

This week if you will indulge me I''d like to share the 2020 AW journey with you.. below.

But first - some good news - a massive backlog of containers and stock deliveries have arrived at our warehouse in Sheffield. We have been seriously struggling to keep many products in stock for all the reasons you well know about, but this week we are happy to have lots of best selling lines back in stock.. containers and shipments from EU suppliers ahead of Brexit  came, two more containers from China, one from India, one from Indonesia. 

I can confidently say we are Lock Stocked and Loaded ready for the 2021 season of love - the sales, the run upto Valentines day, Mothers day, Easter (which could be a mini Christmas) and fathers day.. The season of love, we call it.. and AW is dare I say your best supplier at this time.  Check out the deals below. We can take orders upto 3pm on Tuesday 22nd December for dispatch this year. After that we will dispatch in the new year, your order placed early will mean early dispatch.
