2020 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the ancient forest campaign. Spring amendments to the Forest and Range Practices Act and a proposed new, province-wide Old Growth Strategy bring huge opportunities for meaningful change, but this government has not yet indicated they're prepared to do what it takes to finally protect BC's ancient forests. We need your support more than ever to ensure the BC government takes action!

Your donation to the AFA will help us undertake expeditions into remote, endangered ancient forests to raise awareness of the urgency of this issue; build alliances with community activists, chambers of commerce, recreation and tourism groups; and engage First Nations allies and councils on solutions for ancient forests.

ACTION ALERT: Have your say on the BC government's Old Growth Strategy

For decades, we�ve been telling the BC government that the way it manages old-growth forests is unsustainable, unethical, and is putting species, the climate, and communities at risk. But the liquidation of ancient forests has continued unabated while ecosystems and species are pushed further to the brink.

Finally, our movement has forced the province to review the way it manages old-growth.

An independent, two-person panel is seeking public feedback until January 31st and will present recommendations to the BC government this spring that will inform a new provincial Old Growth Strategy.

SPEAK UP FOR ANCIENT FORESTS

This is a rare and critical opportunity to call for the science-based protection of BC�s endangered old-growth forests.

In their 2017 election platform, the NDP said they would listen to science and use the ecosystem-based management approach of the Great Bear Rainforest (where 85% of the forests are reserved from logging) to sustainably manage BC�s old-growth forests. But they have yet to act on their promise.

The NDP�s proposed Old Growth Strategy presents the perfect opportunity for the BC government to take bold and ambitious action for old-growth forests, to become a leader in science-based conservation, and to champion Indigenous-led protection efforts for the benefit of all British Columbians while also supporting sustainable, second-growth forestry jobs.

Please email the panel with your feedback, then go a step further and complete the BC government's online questionnaire about old-growth forest management using our handy guide.

We need thousands of British Columbians to speak up and tell the BC government that it�s past time we protected BC�s ancient forest ecosystems. Please join us and spread the word far and wide!

As 2019 comes to a close, we want you to know how much you matter. How important you are in shaping the fate of BC's endangered ancient forests. And how grateful we are for your generosity and support. Thanks to you, we have achieved much this year that we can all be proud of.

This fall, we launched our first "community spotlight" video to elevate the voices of Tahsis community members working to protect the McKelvie Valley's ancient forests and highlight an Indigenous-led conservation solution for the area.

We also exposed BC Timber Sales' non-compliant logging of some of Earth's grandest forests and near-record-sized-trees in the Nahmint Valley in Hupacasath and Tseshaht territories; launched a new digital campaign tool that has enabled over 10,000 individuals to speak up for ancient forests; commissioned an analysis on the economic value of standing old-growth (stay tuned for more details in the new year!); continued to lobby the BC government to implement science-based policies; and much more.

As we enter the new decade, we can't help but feel 2020 will be a pivotal year for the ancient forest movement.

With the BC government currently conducting a review on the way it manages old-growth, we're mobilizing British Columbians to submit their feedback on the province's proposed Old Growth Strategy. We're also working to equip the province's independent panel with the information they need to make informed recommendations to the NDP government on old-growth management.

We'll also continue to call for logging moratoria in old-growth hotspots like the Nahmint Valley and Edinburgh Mountain; lobby the BC NDP to support the creation of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas; expand our engagement with 'non-traditional' allies such as chambers of commerce; and hugely scale-up pressure on the BC government to protect old-growth while ensuring sustainable, second-growth forestry jobs.

We've got a big year ahead, but we're bolstered by your passion and dedication to saving BC's ancient forests and are forever grateful for your support.

Dear Mia,

With the deadline to submit feedback on the BC government's Old Growth Strategy now passed, we want to say a huge thank you to those of you who took a moment to speak up for BC's ancient forests.

Whether you completed the online questionnaire, sent an email to the government-appointed panel (over 2,200 unique submissions were made through our online tool alone!), shared our call to action, or did all of the above, you helped send a resounding message to the BC government that old-growth forests have tremendous value when kept standing and that urgent action is needed to protect them.

But our work is far from done.

Help us ramp up the ancient forest campaign!

The BC government plans to delay the public release of the independent panel's recommendations until as late as October. They also have no framework for how public feedback will be incorporated into their proposed Old Growth Strategy and no timeline for its implementation. Meanwhile, the short-sighted destruction of BC's old-growth forests continues. We need to work harder than ever this year to keep the pressure on and ensure the NDP's Old Growth Strategy goes far enough in protecting ancient forests.

We need to continue demanding an immediate halt to logging in BC's most intact and endangered old-growth forests while the NDP government develops its Old Growth Strategy. We also need to work to secure funding and support for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas; continue raising awareness around the threats facing remaining ancient forests and those that depend on them; and build a compelling economic case for old-growth forest protection. But we can't do any of this alone.

Do ancient forests matter to you? Let the BC government know before January 31st.

Dear Mia,

The window of opportunity to speak up for endangered old-growth forests is closing fast. There's just one week left to submit your feedback on the BC government's proposed Old Growth Strategy.

Already, over 600 individuals have added their voice using our online tool (if you're one of them, thank-you!), but we need thousands to participate to ensure we send a loud and clear message to the province that it's past time ancient forests got the protection they deserve.

Can we count on you to have your say before 4pm, next Friday, January 31st?

SUBMIT YOUR FEEDBACK

It only takes a few minutes to have your say. Just visit our webpage and and write a message to the Strategic Old Growth Review panel, telling them why you believe BC's ancient rainforests are important and must be protected. We've provided a few suggested points you can include, but remember to speak from the heart as much as you can because a personalized message will carry much more weight.

Once you've sent your message, please help us spread the word far and wide by:

� Joining our challenge to contact at least three friends or family members to asking them to speak up for old-growth.
� Sharing our call to action and latest photo gallery of the threatened old-growth forests of the Caycuse Watershed on Vancouver Island on social media.

Once you've done that, please complete the BC government's online survey using our handy survey guide.

We need to garner as much participation as possible before the consultation period ends on January 31st to ensure the status quo of clearcutting endangered old-growth forests does not continue.

The future of ancient forests is hanging in the balance. It's time to stand together for ancient forests, Indigenous rights, and sustainable second-growth forestry jobs. Please add your voice today.

BC's 2020 Budget Fails to Address Climate and Ecological Emergencies

On Tuesday, the NDP government released its third provincial budget since coming to power in 2017. Disappointingly, despite the ecological and climate emergencies engulfing BC's ancient forests, Budget 2020 lacks meaningful solutions to protect forest ecosystems while supporting communities.

Not only is there no funding for a desperately-needed provincial land acquisition fund to protect endangered ecosystems on private lands or for new and existing Indigenous Protected Areas, the Province has also failed to increase funding for land-use planning modernization (an important precursor for increased old-growth protection) or to support the economic diversification of First Nations communities in lieu of old-growth logging.

Since 2017, tens of thousands of concerned people have called on the province to enact legislative and policy changes to protect old-growth forests. A recent Sierra Club BC opinion poll even showed that a whopping 92% of British Columbians support increased protection of old-growth forests.

What's more, last year 17 conservation and recreation groups and hundreds of individuals sent submissions to the BC government, calling for dedicated funding for the purchase and protection of endangered ecosystems on private lands in Budget 2020.

The BC government's 2020 budget has utterly failed to listen to the wishes of the vast majority of British Columbians and to align with the environmental concerns of the times.

Instead, the NDP have opted for a safe, "stay-the-course" budget that perpetuates the status quo logging of non-renewable old-growth forests, species loss, massive carbon emissions from forestry, and an unsustainable forest sector that fails to support communities in the long-term.

British Columbians deserve a government that's prepared to face the province's greatest challenges head-on. That's why we'll be hugely ramping up pressure on them to act. Stay tuned for more opportunities to speak up for old-growth forests this year!

Our new and improved 2019 Activity and Financial Report is now live! Thanks to you, we accomplished much in 2019 that we can all be proud of.

Here are a few highlights from the year:

Over 10,000 messages were sent to provincial decision makers through our new digital campaign tools.
5 faith groups, 7 recreation groups, and 1 union signed resolutions calling for protection of old-growth forests, bringing the total number of resolutions passed by "non-traditional allies" to 129.
We mobilized supporters to provide input on Budget 2020, proposed changes to the Forest and Range Practices Act, and the BC government''s Old Growth Strategy.
We exposed non-compliant logging of some of Earth''s grandest forests and near-record-sized- trees in the Nahmint Valley in Hupacasath & Tseshaht territories.
We launched our first "community spotlight" video, focusing on Tahsis and the McKelvie Valley, to help elevate the voices of communities on the "front lines" of ancient forest protection.

Looking ahead to 2020...

In light of the global health crisis, like everyone, we''ve had to make some adjustments. Our office is temporarily closed, our team is working from home, and we''ve had to cancel events. But, despite these uncertain times, we are still working hard to protect BC''s remaining endangered ancient forests for the wellbeing and resilience of communities and ecosystems alike.

With the BC government having promised to develop a new provincial Old Growth Strategy, 2020 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for the ancient forest campaign.

With your help, we''ll work hard to ensure the NDP''s Old Growth Strategy is ambitious, science-based, and has a clear timeline for implementation. We''ll also be temporarily moving our mobilization and outreach efforts online; engaging and building alliances with those outside the environmental movement, including chambers of commerce and tourism associations; and taking time to explore, document, and showcase threatened old-growth forests.

This year, we''re supporting the commencement of an academic study on the economic value of recreation in old-growth forests on Vancouver Island and commissioning a GIS specialist to undertake mapping of key old-growth forests.

Last week, the BC government reaffirmed its commitment to taking action on old-growth in Minister Conroy’s mandate letter, which outlines the NDP''s priorities for the coming term.

In addition to implementing all 14 of the Old Growth Strategic Review panel''s recommendations, the NDP has said it will enact new land use policies, transition BC''s forest sector from high-volume to high-value production, and support communities to diversify their economies.

These are positive signals, but we must keep the pressure on to ensure they follow through.

We must demand they fully implement the old growth panel''s recommendation to immediately halt logging in BC''s most endangered old-growth forests and commit funding to support Indigenous-led protected areas, land-use planning, and economic alternatives to old-growth logging.

As old-growth panel submits recommendations to government, ancient forests continue to fall

Dear Mia,

Today is the deadline for the government-appointed old-growth panel to submit its recommendations to the Province, following its six-month Old Growth Strategic Review.

Thanks to the thousands of concerned British Columbians like you who sent feedback to the panel, we''re hoping to see strong recommendations that put ancient forests and resilient communities ahead of timber supply and corporate profits.

But while the NDP government undertakes further consultations and formulates its proposed Old Growth Strategy, BC''s globally rare old-growth forests will continue to be logged - forests like the spectacular grove of ancient cedars that AFA''s TJ Watt documented earlier this month in the Caycuse watershed.

Located southwest of Lake Cowichan in Ditidaht First Nation territory, the grove lies within a 33.5 hectare old-growth cutblock near Haddon Creek and is home to scores of giant trees, including monumental redcedar trees over 12 feet in diameter and some nearly a thousand years old. There is no time to lose for rare, ancient forests such as these.

We need the BC government to publish the old-growth panel''s recommendations right away, not in six months'' time. But more importantly, we need swift, sweeping changes to BC''s forestry laws to protect endangered ancient forests. Will you stand with us and demand action?

Giant ancient yellow cedars (including Canada''s 9th widest!) at risk of logging in Fairy Creek

Dear Mia,

A few days ago we explored the unprotected headwaters of Fairy Creek near Port Renfrew in Pacheedaht territory - the last intact, unlogged old-growth valley outside parks on southern Vancouver Island - and were amazed to find some of the grandest ancient yellow cedars we'd ever seen. The largest came in at 9.5 feet (2.9 metres) wide, making it the ninth-widest yellow cedar known in Canada. As the longest-living life forms in the country, a yellow cedar this size could be almost 2,000 years old.

The Fairy Creek valley is a truly rare and special place. But thanks to BC's archaic and destructive forest policies, it's also at risk of clearcutting by logging company Teal-Jones, who have begun punching roads through the old-growth along the ridgeline above the valley and flagging the headwaters with falling boundary tape. Although there are currently no pending or approved cutblocks, the new roads open the door for future fragmentation of this beautiful, intact valley.

On Monday, independent protesters set up a blockade to stop Teal-Jones from further encroaching on the Fairy Creek headwaters. This blockade, the recent hunger strike in Nanaimo, and Wednesday''s protest outside Claire Trevena''s MLA office in Campbell River illustrate just how fed-up and outraged British Columbians are.

After more than three years in power and a six-month-long Old Growth Strategic Review, we still haven''t heard what, if anything, the NDP government plans to do about BC''s worsening old-growth forest crisis. All we''ve heard from them is excuses, rhetoric, and blatantly misleading information about the state of BC's ancient forests.

As the province drags out the release of the Old Growth Strategic Review panel''s recommendations, rare and endangered ancient forests like Fairy Creek continue to fall.

We need to ramp up the pressure on the NDP government to act. Otherwise, they could delay action until after the next election.

Please join us in calling on the BC government to immediately release the panel''s recommendations, enact moratoria on BC''s most endangered and intact old-growth ecosystems (including Fairy Creek, located in Premier Horgan's own riding), and develop a science-based plan to protect ancient forests province-wide!

Help make old-growth forests a major election issue

The provincial election on October 24th could be a major turning point for BC''s endangered ancient forests. Will you help us make old-growth protection a top election issue?

Send a letter to party leaders now

BC's globally rare old-growth temperate forests are becoming increasingly scarce, threatening biodiversity, communities, local economies, and our own wellbeing.

Following a review of BC's broken forest regime, an independent panel has recommended a complete paradigm shift in the way old-growth forests are managed - one that puts ecosystem health and biodiversity ahead of timber values. The panel''s 14 recommendations form a blueprint for how the next BC government can protect old-growth forests while supporting Indigenous peoples, forest workers, and communities.

While the province recently took a positive step forward by deferring logging in nine areas totalling 353,000 hectares and promising to protect some of BC''s biggest trees, the vast majority of the most ecologically valuable, high productivity old-growth forests are still at risk of being logged. What's more, the BC government has not committed to implementing all 14 of the panel's recommendations.

With the election fast approaching, this is your chance to tell BC''s major party leaders that, in order to earn your vote, they must commit to take meaningful action to protect old-growth forests.

Please send an email to the party leaders, demanding that they:

Work with Indigenous governments to immediately halt logging in BC's most at-risk old-growth forests while solutions are developed;
Fully implement all of the Old Growth Strategic Review panel's recommendations;
Commit funding to support forestry workers, rural communities, and First Nations' protected areas and economies;
Pass legislation that puts ecosystem integrity, biodiversity, and ecosystem services over timber values.

Add your voice today

Old-growth forests and the life support systems they provide us are in grave danger. Less than 3% of BC''s highest productivity, big tree ancient forests remain standing today - and most of what remains is slated for logging.

We need to let BC's major party leaders know there's a clear path forward for old-growth forests - one that is based on science, respects Indigenous rights, and supports communities.

Please speak up today and help protect these unique and endangered ancient forests for future generations.

Old Growth Strategic Review panel recommends new future for old-growth forests

Dear Mia,

The fight to protect BC''s endangered ancient rainforests has been hard-fought for many decades. It can be discouraging at times, with victories few and far between. But today I have hope for the future of BC''s endangered old-growth forests - and I have you to thank.

On Friday the BC government finally released its independent Old Growth Strategic Review panel''s report, A New Future for Old Forests, which provides a blueprint for a complete paradigm shift in forest management in BC, putting ecosystem health ahead of the forest industry''s interests.

The report distills feedback from thousands of British Columbians into 14 comprehensive recommendations, including immediate measures to protect the BC''s endangered old-growth ecosystems.

In response, the province announced it would immediately defer logging in nine areas across BC, including world-famous Clayoquot Sound in Tla-o-qui-aht, Ahousaht, and Hesquiaht territory; the Incomappleux Valley in Ktunaxa territory in BC's Inland Temperate Rainforest; and the intact McKelvie Valley in Mowachaht/Muchalaht territory near Tahsis!

It means over 350,000 ha of BC wilderness, including 200,000 ha of old-growth, is off-limits to logging for two years while the BC government develops long-term protection plans for these areas and works to implement the panel''s recommendations.

Tahsis mayor Martin Davis stands next to an old-growth Douglas-fir tree in the McKelvie Valley, one of nine areas where the BC government has deferred logging.

The province has also said it''s working with First Nations to identify additional areas for deferral and announced a new regulation to protect up to 1,500 of BC's biggest trees with one-hectare buffer zones around them.

This is a positive step in the right direction and none of it would be possible without you, speaking up for ancient forests time and again, so thank you! ??

Now we need to work together to hold the BC government to account and push them to go further.

The vast majority of BC''s most endangered old-growth forests - those with the greatest value to industry and endangered species - are still at risk of logging. What''s more, the province has not committed any funding for the transition to sustainable, second-growth forestry, for new Indigenous Protected Areas, or the economic diversification of First Nations communities. This funding is critical for protecting old-growth forests on a vast scale!

We need your help to keep the fight going and to ensure the right solutions come fast enough for BC''s ancient forests and the communities that depend on them.

Ancient giants cut in the Caycuse signal immediate need for action - and funding - from BC NDP

Dear Mia,

On a trip to Vancouver Island''s Caycuse watershed back in April, I explored and photographed one of the most spectacular groves I''d ever come across.

Wandering through the forest, I was stunned by the sheer number of monumental redcedars, one after another, on this gentle mountain slope. I was also crushed to see that logging had already begun in the 33.5-hectare cutblock.

I revisited the site earlier this month, only this time it would be to photograph the stumps of those same trees. It was gut-wrenching to witness how the spectacular grove, once filled with flourishes of red, green, and gold, had been utterly destroyed.

Located southwest of Cowichan Lake and east of Nitinat Lake in unceded Ditidaht First Nation territory, the last remaining groves in the Caycuse watershed host some of the grandest forests on the South Island, rivalling the renowned Avatar Grove near Port Renfrew or the Walbran Valley.

Giant redcedars like the ones Teal Jones are logging here have immense ecological value, particularly as wildlife habitat, and important tourism and First Nations cultural value. Yet, the BC government continues to allow irreplaceable, centuries-old trees to be high-graded for short-term gain while they talk about their new old-growth plan.

The BC NDP government has promised to implement all of the Old Growth Strategic Review panel’s recommendations. But without immediate action to protect the most at-risk forests and a significant funding commitment, we''ll see few meaningful changes and more talk-and-log.

That''s why I''m asking you to join a growing number of conservation and First Nations groups and influential leaders in pressuring the NDP to take immediate action - as soon as Cabinet is formed this week - to expand logging deferrals in collaboration with First Nations and to commit funding in the 2021 budget for Indigenous-led Protected Areas, land-use plans, and conservation economies.

Momentum is growing. First Nations leaders, including the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, are also calling for urgent action and dedicated funding from the province to protect old-growth and support First Nations communities, economies, and cultures.

The BC government''s priorities for the coming term are being set now. We need to let Premier John Horgan know we won''t accept anything less than bold, decisive, and inclusive action on old-growth.

BC''s last ancient giants are counting on us.

Speak up for Old-Growth Forests!

Send a message directly to John Horgan telling him the BC NDP must show they''re serious about protecting old-growth by allocating funding in Budget 2021 for Indigenous protected areas and economic alternatives to old-growth logging.

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of the AFA!

Dear Mia,

On February 24, 2010, driven by a passion for BC's magnificent ancient forests and the urgent need to protect them, conservationists Ken Wu and TJ Watt held a press conference in Victoria to launch their new organization, the Ancient Forest Alliance.

As the rapid and widespread destruction of old-growth forests worsened, Ken and TJ knew an innovative and agile organization dedicated solely to the ancient forest campaign was needed to build the movement and create change.

A decade later, what was once a dynamic duo has been transformed into a thriving organization, powered by seven full-time staff and a community of over 20,000 engaged, dedicated, and generous supporters! Today, on our 10-year anniversary, please join us in celebrating a decade of accomplishments made possible by your support.

Over the past decade, you have helped us:

. Locate & successfully campaign to protect the Avatar Grove near Port Renfrew in Pacheedaht territory (2012).

. Secure protection of 60% of Echo Lake near Mission in Sts'ailes territory (2013).

. Defeat the BC government's proposal to expand Tree Farm Licences across the province (2013/2014).
. Build a boardwalk for Avatar Grove with the help of hard-working volunteers (2013-2017).

. Avert logging so far in ancient forest hotspots, like the Central Walbran Valley in Pacheedaht territory.
. Build alliances with non-traditional allies, which has resulted in numerous resolutions being passed in support of old-growth forest protection, including by the BC Chamber of Commerce in 2016 and the Public and Private Workers of Canada millworkers'' union in 2017.
. Organize many public rallies and info nights and tour thousands of people on educational old-growth hikes.
. Explore and document the beauty and destruction of BC''s ancient forests with professional photos & videos that have been viewed millions of times.
. Draw attention to BC''s ancient forests on local, national, and international levels.
And most importantly:
. Push the BC NDP government to potentially undertake new provincial old-growth management policies, for the first time in decades, including convening a BC Old-Growth Strategic Review panel to gather public input on old-growth management and commencing the protection of some of BC''s biggest old-growth trees (limited in scope thus far) (2019/2020).

We have truly come a long way and want to thank YOU, the Ancient Forest Alliance community, for standing by us on this journey. Your voices have been loud and strong and you''ve helped build the momentum needed to keep BC''s old-growth forest crisis in the spotlight.

While our work is far from over, the tides are changing, the movement is growing, and we have real hope for the future of ancient forests. With you on our side, we won''t stop until BC''s endangered old-growth forests are finally protected for good.

Tomorrow is Election Day, giving British Columbians a critical opportunity to vote for old-growth forests and the communities and species that depend on them! If you haven''t yet submitted your ballot, here are some key details to know.

Still have a vote-by-mail package?

. To ensure Elections BC receives your package before 8pm on October 24th, you need to return it in person at any district electoral office, voting place, or participating Service BC location. If you mail it now, it won''t be received in time and won''t be counted. For more information, visit Election BC''s vote by mail page.

Voting in person tomorrow?

. Polls are open tomorrow, Saturday October 24th, from 8am to 8pm. Click here to find polling stations for your riding or use the Where to Vote App.

Dear Mia,

Today, on International Day of Forests, and in light of the public health emergency we're all grappling with, let''s take the opportunity to appreciate forests'' healing power and remember that maintaining healthy forest ecosystems is critical to human health and wellbeing.

In addition to providing clean air, absorbing pollutants, filtering freshwater for wildlife and communities, and helping combat climate change by storing immense amounts of carbon, old-growth forests support our physical and mental health in myriad other ways.

While many of us intuitively know this to be true from our own experiences, there are numerous studies that support the connection between forests and human health. They show that spending time in forests can reduce stress, decrease our risk of and help treat chronic illness, elevate our mood, and even boost our immune system.

How? In order to protect themselves from insects and other threats, trees release airborne phytochemicals called phytoncides. These phytochemicals have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties which help trees and plants fight disease. As we walk through the forest and breathe them in, they help our bodies do the same!

BC''s old-growth forests are valuable repositories for medicinal plants, animals, and fungi. They even house anti-cancer compounds, like taxol, which is found in the bark of pacific yew trees and is the main pharmaceutical used for breast and ovarian cancer treatment.

As old-growth forest ecosystems continue to be degraded and destroyed in BC, we're being robbed of the many health benefits they provide and those we have yet to discover.

And, as we are forced to turn our attention to our health and the health of our loved ones right now, we not only have a great excuse to spend more time in forests and other green spaces, we're reminded of yet another reason to leave BC''s last remaining old-growth forests standing.

So get outside, visit your local forest or venture further onto a less trodden path (while maintaining your distance from others) and take some deep breaths. And if you''re unable to leave home, even listening to recorded sounds of bird song, babbling brooks, or rainfall has been proven to relax the mind and reduce stress.

Meanwhile, we will continue fighting to protect BC''s endangered ancient forests for the health and resilience of communities and species alike.

Province-wide day of action for BC''s forests Friday, Sept 18th

Mia,

Like you, more and more British Columbians are fed up with the destructive logging of old-growth forests. In response to the BC government''s delays and excuses, this summer has seen a massive rise in grassroots action to pressure the province to protect ancient forests and improve forest management.

Now, there''s a grassroots movement to hold a province-wide Forest March on Friday, September 18th.

This is a critical opportunity for us to join together and send a united message to the BC government that old-growth forests are in crisis and need strong, science-based solutions.

Forest March BC''s aim is to have marches, gatherings, and demonstrations in as many BC towns and cities as possible in order to have the greatest impact.

Will you stand with us on September 18th?

How to get involved:

1. Coordinate an event in your community or volunteer your skills

Forest March BC organizers are looking for individuals with event coordination experience who are willing to organize a march or gathering at a prominent location in their community or their local MLA''s constituency office (be sure to check whether your MLA''s office will be open & staffed on the 18th).

Volunteers are also needed for a range of tasks from sign-making to social media promotion, to on-the-ground coordination. For more info and to express interest in volunteering in your community, email forestmarchbc@gmail.com.

2. Attend a planned event near you

Check the BC Forest March website for details of events already planned. So far, marches/gatherings have been confirmed in Vancouver, Victoria, Powell River, Nanaimo, Whistler, Comox Valley, Nelson, and Peachland. More details will be added as they become available.

Note: Participants are encouraged to wear green for forests and/or blue for water, bring signs, and most importantly, to be COVID-safe by practicing social distancing and wearing masks at all times.

The Ancient Forest Alliance will be involved in events in Vancouver and Victoria. Please stay tuned for more info to come!

World famous Cathedral Grove threatened by clearcut logging on nearby mountainside

Dear Mia,

On a recent expedition with conservationists from the Alberni Watershed Forest Alliance, we were shocked to discover that Mt Horne, the mountainside above the world-famous Cathedral Grove, had been clearcut.

Turns out, by failing to prioritize the protection of endangered ecosystems on private lands, the BC government has placed Canada''s most famous old-growth forest at risk.

Read all the details in today''s press release.

Located east of Port Alberni in the territories of the K'?moks and Tseshaht First Nations and the Te'mexw Treaty Association, the large cutblock lies roughly 300 metres from the MacMillan Provincial Park boundary where over half a million tourists visit every year to see Cathedral Grove's extremely rare, ancient Douglas-fir trees, of which less than 1% remain on BC's south coast.

The clearcutting of this ancient forest "hotspot" of high conservation and recreational value will likely have numerous adverse impacts. For example, destroying some of BC's last remaining old-growth Douglas-fir stands; reducing critical wintering habitat for black-tailed deer; and increasing siltation of the Cameron River, which runs through Cathedral Grove, due to run-off during heavy rains. The logging has already destroyed part of the popular Mount Horne Loop Trail, too.

But this destruction could have been avoided.

For years, we''ve been calling on the BC government to re-establish a provincial Natural Lands Acquisition Fund for the purchase and protection of endangered ecosystems on private lands.

By redirecting readily-available funds (e.g. from BC''s real estate speculation tax or unredeemed bottle deposits), the Province could have access to a pool of money to purchase private lands and add them to BC''s protected area system and to support First Nations in establishing Indigenous Protected Areas.

But so far, the political will clearly isn''t there. In its recent 2020 budget, the Province once again failed to set aside even modest funding for the protection of BC''s rarest and most endangered ecosystems, despite a projected $227 million budget surplus. This is simply unacceptable, particularly in the face of worsening climate and biodiversity emergencies.

With the BC government potentially devising new old-growth forest protection policies this year under its provincial Old Growth Strategy, we need to continue to make our expectations crystal clear. Will you help us keep the pressure up?

Speak up for Old-Growth Forests!

Please take a moment to tell BC Environment Minister George Heyman that endangered old-growth forests on private land must be protected before they''re lost forever. Let him know you want the BC government to create a provincial Natural Lands Acquisition Fund while also supporting new and existing Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas in BC.

Earth Day 2020 is all about climate action and what better way to take action for the climate than to leave BC''s old-growth forests standing?

Scientists around the world are urging governments to adopt "natural solutions" to fight the climate crisis. This means protecting and restoring ecosystems, especially primary forests, at a vast scale to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maximizing Earth''s ability to capture and store carbon.

BC''s ancient temperate rainforests are one of our greatest assets in this time of climate crisis because they:

Store 2-3 times more carbon per hectare than the second-growth plantations they''re replaced with.
Help regulate climate and hydrology by influencing precipitation patterns and moderating temperature.
Help mitigate the negative effects of climate change by acting as buffers against floods and fires and providing biological diversity which supports adaptation and resilience.

Given the critical role old-growth forests play in combating the climate emergency, BC has a global responsibility to protect them.

With a new provincial Old Growth Strategy in the works, this is a pivotal year for ancient forests and there''s hope for meaningful change. But urgent measures, such as immediate moratoria on logging in old-growth hotspots, are being ignored and we have no assurances that BC''s Old Growth Strategy will go far enough to protect endangered old-growth. Join us Friday April 3rd to celebrate 10 years of the Ancient Forest Alliance!

Dear Mia,

You are cordially invited to join the Ancient Forest Alliance for a very special evening to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, our wonderful community of supporters, and the many accomplishments you''ve helped us achieve over the last decade.

When: Friday, April 3rd from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Doors open 6:15pm.
Where: Trees Restaurant ?? (537 Johnson St, Victoria, in Lekwungen territory)
