The bush fires ravaging Australia
|
No doubt, most of you are aware that horrendous fires are burning in Australia. Out of concern for the safety and well-being of our Bowenwork colleagues Downunder, American Bowen Academy reached out to Ossie and Elaine at Bowtech Headquarters on January 2, to see how they have been faring. We received this reply:
"The fires are devastating and so many people, animals and land have been affected. The fires are not under control at this stage. Thankfully [there are] no fires close by us here, but everyone is on constant lookout as the land is so dry and weather conditions are terrible."
For those of you wondering where and how you can do the most good, Steve Wells of EFT Downunder (Energy Techniques for Emotional Freedom) has vetted several Australian fire appeals and rural fire services that are focusing on rescue and relief, that is, on filling basic needs for shelter and food and making sure that families are secured. Steve writes:
"One thing disasters always do is demonstrate how many caring, kind, generous people there are in the world, and the strengths in community.
If you want to contribute, please consider donating to one of the following fine organisations. If you can do more, you'll see on some of these websites how you can do so:
Australian Red Cross Bushfire Appeal
Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal
NSW Rural Fire Service Donations
Victorian Country Fire Service"

Effects of nutrition on sports performance and injury recovery
|
by Andrea Jones, Bowenwork practitioner and instructor in Eagle Mountain, Utah
As I continue my Bowenwork journey, I keep looking for ways to help my clients recover faster and overcome health challenges with greater permanence. Although during my Bowenwork training I was able to help relieve my father's diabetic pain symptoms, there was no permanent healing, and he died in 2010 of complications after surgeons took his second leg. I thought about Tom Bowen, who had also died of complications after diabetes led to a second leg amputation. When I learned about how Bowen's wife's asthma was controlled by a combination of his "asthma" moves plus changes to her diet, I wondered if those dietary changes might help with other diseases, too.
In March of 2016, when my mother had two knee replacements followed by terrible reactions to medication, I recalled my father's decline and, fearing a similar fate to that of my parents, I decided to live more strictly the health code of my own faith tradition and that of the Loma Linda Blue Zone 7th Day Adventists. Within eight months of choosing a whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) diet and also giving up vegetable oils, processed flour and sugar, I had lost 70 pounds and gained confidence that I could stop worrying about food addiction or developing Type 2 diabetes. I realized that I was following the nutritional recommendations for bed wetting children (an 80/20 diet minus dairy, as described at the end of page 6.7 of the Bowtech manual).
I know that the professions of "nutritionist" and "dietitian" are regulated in many states and countries, including my own; therefore I do not tell clients what foods to eat or refrain from eating. However, in the last few years, I have carefully observed the impact of changes in my clients' diets as well as my own.
Changes I have observed
Among my Bowenwork clients, friends in WFPB groups and family members, those who healed the fastest ate only the mildest foods (to satiety) until the crisis passed:
* water as the beverage of choice, with lemon/lime juice added throughout the day
* (20 oz) fresh celery juice 30 minutes after the first lemon water and before breakfast
* all kinds of fruits and veggies, even potatoes and avocados
* fresh and/or dried aromatic herbs in salads, guacamole, soups and tisanes
* wild foods, e.g., mushrooms, burdock and wild blueberries
After the crisis passed, they continued rebuilding their health with beans, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and lentil pastas. Although these foods are a little harder to digest, they sustain energy during the transition from practicing constant nourishment (as in the first phase described above) to spacing meals more toward a traditional "three-meals-a-day" pattern.
The Game Changers
This documentary, which was released in September 2019, is the best documentary on the role of nutrition in sports recovery that I have ever seen. I think that everyone would learn a lot from watching The Game Changers, which you can find on Netflix, Vimeo, Vudu, YouTube, Google Play and iTunes.
The film's main character documents his journey to recovery from a severe sports injury. Although I am not an athlete, following the experiences of some of the greatest athletes in the world across a number of different sports made it impossible for me to ignore the impact that switching to a plant-based diet had on their strength and performance.
Focus on data
One of the most refreshing aspects of the film was its focus on data and research. As claims are made throughout the video, citations of research studies that back up the claims are shown in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. While other health documentaries make claims with little to no scientific backing, The Game Changers provides riveting scientific evidence for a plant-based diet along with its many impressive anecdotal examples. I started thinking about how my Bowenwork clients might benefit from changing what they ate, whether recovering from acute injuries, non-resolving injuries or even chronic diseases.
Plants lead to better erections
One of my favorite scenes may not be suitable for kids, as the researcher compares the overnight erections of three college athletes after a meat dinner to their overnight erections after a plant-based dinner. The comparisons amazed all three athletes -- and also several of my clients with erectile dysfunction who then benefited from modifying their diets. Although the scene doesn't show anything, if you think you might feel uncomfortable during the discussion, fast-forward between minutes 0:52:00 and 0:56:36.
Strong language warning
If you wish to fast-forward through the film's expletives, they appear at: * 0:20:45 - directly after a boxer wins a fight and the referee holds his arm in the air * 1:09:07 - when the Australian anti-poacher talks about how "gorillas don't eat meat" * 1:17:31 - when Arnold Schwarzenegger uses the word twice in a single sentence
Free resources
Dr. Michael Greger, chief science officer for the film's production company, reviews all new nutrition studies every year so that I don't have to. From here, you can find short youtube videos about more than 2,000 health topics. For example, this video reassured me that a plant-based diet would virtually guarantee that I won't develop Type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen Checklist, a free application that helps you fit healthy foods (and exercise) into your daily routine, can also be downloaded from the app store on your smartphone.
To see some examples of the research studies that are listed in the lower left corner of The Game Changers, click in the "Page References" box at the bottom of each page: maximizing performance, muscle and strength, individual nutrients.
BONUS CHALLENGE: Please join me this month at Veganuary.com for the British (American now, too) revolution I participated in two years ago for the first time. They offer a free sign-up, a free cookbook and a free recipe every day. I'd love to know how you feel after a month of yummy new food experiences! Write to me at Andrea@BowenUS.com.

Rescheduled: Ruth Werner's online Pathology 2020 class
|
Enrollment is now open for Ruth Werner's 2020 Pathology Online class, which will run from May 3 through December 20, 2020.
American Bowen Academy highly recommends this class to enrich Bowenwork practitioners' understanding of its emphasis on critical thinking and practical application. understanding of their clients' health conditions so as to make informed, clinically-based decisions for applying Bowenwork procedures.
Completion earns 60 hours toward the Academy's 500-hour certification and 16 hours toward our biennial 32-hour continuing education requirement. NCBTMB also recognizes this class for 60 hours of continuing education credit, and it would fulfill the requirements of some states that all bodywork practitioners have training in pathology.
Prerequisites: - completion of 120 hours of instruction in Anatomy and Physiology - use of A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology, 7th edition
The feedback we have received about Pathology Online is that it is well worth the investment of money ($500 plus cost of textbook), time and effort.
The class syllabus and outline contain additional information about the aims, specific learning outcomes and details of each week's assignments. To read it, click here.
