How to insert Peikko or Anstar column shoes from ProdLib library in Revit [VIDEO]

Anstar and Peikko both manufacture structural connections for precast concrete. And they''ve gone the extra step of making their respective products available for designers to use by uploading them to BIM content libraries. You can find their products in the libraries put together by ProdLib. Now that''s some great BIM content right there! As we''ve been saying for years, "Manufacturers, we need you in BIM!"

Whichever manufacturer you may choose, here is a workflow for inserting column shoes efficiently from ProdLib using our Precast Concrete BIM design software for Revit.

Insert precast column shoes using Prodlib libraries.
If the Revit Family doesn''t snap to the Host, just modify it by changing a few options in the Family Editor.
Create a configuration to insert 4 column shoes all at once using the Smart Connections tool that''s part of our Precast Concrete BIM software.
Use the configuration on all columns.
Flip details using the ''Modify Elements'' command.
Update the other columns.
Modify the Family to automatically track the size of the column.
Rotate the column shoes in one column, and just update the others so that they all automatically follow the size of the precast column.

From Conceptual Mass to Structural Framing with Wood/Metal Framing Floor

Volumetric massing has been widely accepted as a primary means of early-stage building design. Using mass blocks to define a building's future shape, size, space quality and design features is a standard method of tackling a new project at the conceptual design stage. Real-life massing models are a great way to solve problems relating to volumes of a stand-alone building or an entire masterplan. As one of the most important architectural design considerations, massing can influence our perception of a building significantly. But how can the subtle sense of space be translated to the computer screen and still be convincing?

Autodesk Revit conceptual massing tools provide great versatility for generating masses of any shape and size. Revit's massing tool is often a starting point for projects of any size. The architect first works at refining a mass of one or multiple buildings before going into detail. In the case of creating a mass from scratch, Revit offers a great tool - In-Place Mass. It allows you to create a system family of a mass without leaving the project file and being able to work within the context of the project (see our blogpost on Revit Massing: In-Place Mass vs Mass Family).

Add Mass Floors to Revit massing

Create Revit Floors from Mass Floors by picking floors and selecting levels

Once the mass - or group of masses - is established, we can further refine our building by applying geometry to masses. For example, we can generate floors from levels set out in the project. With floors applied to the mass we can now use AGACAD's floor framing software for Revit to divide floors into panels and generate structural framing by automation. This sort of workflow allows you to generate structural framing for building elements such as a floor when you only have a mass of the building. Using Floor+ functionality you can also sort structural members and create assemblies. It can also generate shop drawings with only few clicks. Such a speedy process can save a vast amount of time when framing a building from massing. Floor+ uses predefined configurations for framing, so whenever something in the project changes, you can modify the existing configuration and update all your frames automatically.

Framing floors in Revit does pose certain difficulties. For instance, families and all kinds of parameters need to be set up before you even frame one panel. Using AGACAD's Floor+ functionality, structural framing can be generated for a simple or complex floor type and construction/assembly method. Revit Massing: In-Place Mass vs Mass Family (Pt. I)

Autodesk? Revit? massing is a powerful tool for generating masses that works at any scale, whether you're at the conceptual level of a building, at the detailed level refining the fixings and furniture, or working on an entire masterplan. To be able to use this tool to your advantage you should know a couple of techniques. There are two basic workflows for creating masses: create the massing within the project itself (In-Place Massing) or create it in a separate conceptual mass family, which is then loaded into the project. Here''s a brief comparison of these approaches.

In-Place Massing is carried out directly inside the project environment.

Allows you to see the rest of the project context, which is useful when designing at an early stage
The most straightforward approach and works well when the building volumes are not too complex
Good for preliminary sketching of forms and is the recommended approach for early stage design and for conceptual building studies

On the other hand, a Conceptual Mass Family is built in the 'conceptual massing environment', outside of the project environment.

Iterations of the family can be placed as needed around the site.
The family can be loaded into multiple Revit models.
Different team members can work on the different versions of the family.
Better for developing and refining a building mass. The separate environment has additional visibility of 3D levels and reference planes which makes more complex parametric modeling easier.

Precast Concrete Parking Garages in Revit [WEBINAR]

This free webinar on May 7th will be about designing precast concrete parking garages in Revit, with a focus on the warped double tee slab used in the USA (spoiler alert: new tool will be shown). But first off, why parking decks? Building them with precast makes their design and construction relatively simple, so they''re all over the place: here in Lithuania and the rest of Europe, the Middle East, in the US, Down Under, and throughout Asia. So streamlining the workflow for this type of building is important for engineers and manufacturers all around the world.

If you're a precaster in another country, it might be interesting for you to know that in the US double tee slabs for parking garages are warped. They're produced just like normal double tees, but then on the construction site, one end is supported evenly while at the other end one stem support is lower than the other. The resultant twist helps with drainage. It's nice, but it''s a pain for BIM modelers because an element (in this case, the DT slab) has one shape in the model but another shape in the drawing. That means that you have to have two elements - one warped, the other planar.

So what you''ll see in this webinar is an efficient modeling workflow for designing and producing documentation for precast concrete parking garages and - in particular for the US market - a solution for modeling the warped double tee slab.

Precast Concrete is our design software for Revit that will be used during the webinar to automate all the processes like placing wall and beam reinforcement, placing connections, and creating shop drawings. PLUS we''ll unveil a new tool called Floor+C that will help deal with warped double tee slabs. So, it will be a lot, but keep in mind that even your typical precast parking garage (without much architectural ambition) could have 20,000 modeled elements and over 50,000 bars/strands/wires of reinforcement, so having good tools to work with is really important! And on the documentation side, a few hundred sheets means several thousand views, which means you''ve got thousands and thousands of dimensions and text fields, so automation in every step can end up saving hours of work.

Approved, Declined, or Not Yet Reviewed? How to make openings change color in Revit [FREE DOWNLOAD]

The advent of 3D design and BIM put a new spin on MEP coordination: resolving clashes between elements in a model instead of lines in a drawing. MEP engineers working 2D have to imagine piping or ductwork in their heads while making drawings that then need to be checked for viability by the structural designer or perhaps even on-site by the builder. BIM integrates MEP and structural design so that architects, structural & MEP engineers know in advance exactly where MEP elements will be placed during the construction phase, enabling them to create precise models and schedules. Nonetheless, MEP runs still need to be checked to ensure structural integrity and constructability, and that''s a very time-consuming procedure requiring a lot of attention to produce the desired result, error-free.

Fortunately, there is a way to dramatically increase productivity in this area. AGACAD's Cut Opening BIM software not only inserts openings in your projects where MEP elements intersect structural elements but also facilitates coordination between different disciplines and engineers working on the same project. When openings are created, each has its own parameters to mark whether it is acceptable or not, and, with the Opening control window, you can check the parameters of every single opening in your project that was inserted with our Cut Opening tool. What's more, the control window allows you to create a dynamic section box that will move the section box in your 3D view directly to the opening selected in the table, making it easier to locate and check openings requiring review.

In addition to the features above, the opening families we provide with Cut Opening are available for any user modifications. It''s possible to add things such as sleeves or collars to their geometry, add parameters, and change their representation according to company needs or country codes. From Conceptual Mass to Shop Drawings in under 30 minutes

In previous articles we have discussed how to create an In-Place Mass and Mass family and shown how to efficiently generate Revit elements upon massing. Now we're going to take it one step further and demonstrate how to begin with a project concept and finish off with fully framed elements and drawings in less than 30 minutes using AGACAD's Wood Framing Wall and Metal Framing Wall BIM Solutions.

At the outset, it's important to set out your massing accordingly. The more details you have, the better. Sizing and number of levels is a good place to start sculpting volumes. Generally, volumetric massing is widely accepted as a primary means of early stage building design. Using mass blocks to define a building's future shape, size, space quality, and design features is a standard method of tackling a new project at the conceptual design stage. Revit has a great tool for massing at a detailed level, i.e. a fixing (fastener) or a detail that is part of a larger assembly. It also works great with large-scale massing, i.e. clusters of buildings or an entire masterplan.

Designing Precast Concrete Parking Garages in Revit [WORKFLOW]

Parking garages can be built from a variety of materials - cast-in-place, precast concrete, steel framing with concrete, even wood. Perhaps most often seen as stand-alone buildings, they are frequently incorporated into a larger structure, concealed below ground level or several floors above ground. Architecturally speaking they can range from simple to highly unique, boasting tailor-made fa?ades. Functionally most are quite plain though they may be outfitted with complex automatic parking systems.

At any rate, we need them. A lot. That's why they''re being built all over the place. Here in Vilnius, Lithuania, car parks are gradually relieving the lack of parking spaces, an all-too-common problem affecting cities worldwide. Underground ones are ideal in the city center here for preserving views of the city's splendid architecture. Although every situation is different, precast concrete is probably the best choice for your typical, economical, functional parking structure due to its relatively simple design and fast construction timetable that''s less affected by weather conditions. Plus architectural ideas can easily be implemented in fa?ade wall panels.

The AEC industry has been undergoing the transition from 2D digital drafting to 3D informational modeling, data management, sharing, linking between people and software platforms. In four words, building information modelling/management. In a word, BIM.

If we look at the case of an independent, standalone parking garage building, most of it is structural. A typical one has simple architecture, and there's hardly any MEP or other parts of the project to deal with. So in this article, I want to review the design workflow and available tools that make the process efficient in structural BIM models, particularly as regards modeling and documentation.

Smart Assemblies in Revit [UPDATES]

The newest version of our Smart Assemblies BIM tool for automating shop drawings in Revit has just been released.

The primary update in the new version has to do with the Smart Dimensions feature. In the previous version of Smart Assemblies, the Smart Dimensions configurations were in the Hosted Metal Details tab:

But with this update, Smart Dimensions has been moved to its own tab, outside of Hosted Metal Details. This means that you can create dimensions by using settings in the Hosted Metal Details tab AND in the Smart Dimensions tab.

For current users of Smart Assemblies, it's important to know that if you had an existing configuration with Smart Dimensions turned ON, then in your configuration you will now find that Hosted Metal Details and Smart Dimensions are BOTH turned ON. In some situations that could cause duplicate dimensions because Hosted Metal Detail dimensioning rules and Smart Dimensions will both be applied.

Modeling Precast Concrete WALLS to LOD 400 and Getting Shop Drawings in Revit [WORKFLOW]

Autodesk? Revit? lets you easily model walls for precast buildings. In this blog post we will go over the full workflow for modeling precast concrete walls and generating documentation using AGACAD's Precast Concrete BIM Solution for Revit.

1. Model precast walls with Revit using standard structural wall system families. Add doors and window families or face-based void families to have openings in the walls. In this stage, draw your walls from corner to corner, not dividing them into separate precast panels. I recommend modeling them with the correct height constraints - from Level to Level, the way they will be built. Later you can copy them into levels above with Revit's ''Paste Aligned to Selected Levels'' command.

Designing Precast Concrete Parking Garages in Revit [WORKFLOW+VIDEO]

Parking garages can be built from a variety of materials - cast-in-place, precast concrete, steel framing with concrete, even wood. Perhaps most often seen as stand-alone buildings, they are frequently incorporated into a larger structure, concealed below ground level or several floors above ground. Architecturally speaking they can range from simple to highly unique, boasting tailor-made fa?ades. Functionally most are quite plain though they may be outfitted with complex automatic parking systems.

At any rate, we need them. A lot. That's why they''re being built all over the place. Here in Vilnius, Lithuania, car parks are gradually relieving the lack of parking spaces, an all-too-common problem affecting cities worldwide. Underground ones are ideal in the city center here for preserving views of the city's splendid architecture. Although every situation is different, precast concrete is probably the best choice for your typical, economical, functional parking structure due to its relatively simple design and fast construction timetable that''s less affected by weather conditions. Plus architectural ideas can easily be implemented in fa?ade wall panels.

The AEC industry has been undergoing the transition from 2D digital drafting to 3D informational modeling, data management, sharing, linking between people and software platforms. In four words, building information modelling/management. In a word, BIM.

If we look at the case of an independent, standalone parking garage building, most of it is structural. A typical one has simple architecture, and there's hardly any MEP or other parts of the project to deal with. So in this article, I want to review the design workflow and available tools that make the process efficient in structural BIM models, particularly as regards modeling and documentation.

Common Types of Roofs & How to Model Them in Autodesk Revit

Designing roofs in Revit can pose certain difficulties particularly for users less familiar with roof modeling tools. Creating exact roof geometry and size for a new build or modeling an existing roof to given dimensions is not always straightforward. If we follow some key principles, however, we can model quite a few roofs simply by using Revit''s 'Roof by Footprint' tool. For more complex roof profile shapes, 'Roof by Extrusion' is typically used, which we will cover in future articles. Other ways of creating roofs are 3D massing using the 'Roof by Face' tool, which allows you to come up with a greater variety of complex roof designs, and In-Place Massing or Mass Families, which allows you to design irregular roofs and tensile roof structures.

For now, we'll focus on some of the more common roof types used for small-scale residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

To create a simple hip roof with the 'Roof by Footprint' tool, follow the steps below.

Have your perimeter walls and levels ready
In Architecture tab select Roof - Roof by Footprint tool and choose desired roof type
Choose a relevant level for a bottom face of the roof
Use Pick Walls tools and hover over a wall - press tab to select all joined perimeter walls
Define roof parameters like overhangs, slopes, offset from level, rafter cut
Finish the roof by exiting roof editor

New tool in Precast Concrete for Revit: Floor+C [WORKFLOW]

Want to create layouts of precast concrete slabs efficiently in Revit? Our Precast Concrete design software has two tools to do that: Floor Panel Layout (for Floor system families) and the new Floor+C tool (for Structural Framing families).

While both Floor Panel Layout and Floor+C let you create solid, hollow core, double tee, and other types of slabs, in some cases one tool is better than the other. It also depends on user habits and project type. An example where you might want to use Floor+C is if you have warped double tee slabs, as are commonly used in parking garages in North America. Another situation is if your Structural Framing family has camber. And there are probably other cases our users will find.

Floor+C distributes Structural Framing families based on reference floor boundaries. This tool replaces a similar tool (Floor+M) that used to be part of our Precast Concrete toolbox. The reason for the replacement is that Floor+M had default steel families and some settings that were not related to precast. Floor+C should make it clearer since it comes with solid, hollow core, and double tee slab families and sample configurations for precast.

In previous articles we have discussed how to create an In-Place Mass and Mass family and shown how to efficiently generate Revit elements upon massing. Now we're going to take it one step further and demonstrate how to begin with a project concept and finish off with fully framed elements and drawings in less than 30 minutes using AGACAD's Wood Framing Wall and Metal Framing Wall BIM Solutions.

At the outset, it's important to set out your massing accordingly. The more details you have, the better. Sizing and number of levels is a good place to start sculpting volumes. Generally, volumetric massing is widely accepted as a primary means of early stage building design. Using mass blocks to define a building's future shape, size, space quality, and design features is a standard method of tackling a new project at the conceptual design stage. Revit has a great tool for massing at a detailed level, i.e. a fixing (fastener) or a detail that is part of a larger assembly. It also works great with large-scale massing, i.e. clusters of buildings or an entire masterplan.

New UI released for MEP Hangers BIM Solution for Revit

Our MEP Hangers tool assists Revit users with distributing hangers and supports for MEP systems throughout Revit models. It lets you create very precise rules that describe on which exact elements hangers should go and how they should connect to structural elements in different cases. With a lot of filtering available, it's even possible to create one configuration to facilitate putting hangers on a large system all at once with just a few clicks.

An updated user interface has been long in the works for MEP Hangers. Over the course of this past year several of our tools have gotten new UI's, and now MEP Hangers joins their ranks. The functionality of the tool has not been changed with this latest update. The changes just affect the way the tool looks in your toolbar and some small additions that were made in the Configurations window, which we''ll look at more closely below.

Here''s how the interface has changed visually.

The new UI of MEP Hangers takes up less space on the screen and has a new look (which should be familiar to users of our wood and metal framing tools). Hovering the mouse cursor over one of the newly-created icons will provide an extensive tooltip about the command that that button activates:

Another change made is the regrouping of icon placement in the toolbar. In general, the order has been kept the same as in the older version, the biggest change being that now all the settings and configurations have been pushed to the right side of the tool. There you can find the 'Configuration' button, with which you can create your own configurations from scratch, and the 'Settings' button, which contains a sub-menu of important commands for changing the location of the configuration file and template project.

Also under 'Settings' you can access the 'Project Family Browser', which lets you check the families that have already been loaded into the project. Family thumbnails are also displayed to make it easier to choose the correct element to use in MEP Hangers configurations, since sometimes the names of those can be very similar and a visual representation can help.

Last, but not least, now the IFC element replacement commands have their own space in the floating toolbar. If you wish to replace any of the IFC pipes or ducts with Revit elements for the future placement of hangers on those - you will notice a specific button dedicated to that.

Since the last update you probably have noticed that with every Detail Priority also comes a Description box, wherein you can write down what exactly the rule should do or make any notes of your choice:

The detail priorities describe the rules for placing hangers on MEP elements. Upon applying the configuration to the selected duct run, the tool will consecutively run all active detail priorities and insert the requisite elements. And here a useful new feature has been added. Whereas in the past you had to rewrite the rules in order to change the order of the detail priorities, now you can simply drag the tabs into the order in which you want them to be executed:

So, those are all the changes that we've made in this update. We hope that you like them and find them useful while working on your MEP projects in Revit.
