About
Introducing the Great White Shark Bracelets!
There is perhaps no creature more misunderstood than the great white shark. While they are the largest predatory fish in the ocean, they're a lot scarier in our imaginations. In reality, great whites are the protectors of the ocean's biodiversity. They feed on the sick and weak, control prey populations, and help maintain the strength and diversity of other species.
Our grey and white Great White Shark Bracelets are a great way to help you catch eyes and start conversations about what we can do to protect these dangerously misunderstood creatures from ocean plastic and all of the other threats they face.
Pull a pound for great white sharks
Great white shark at the surface
Great white sharks have no natural predators, but their populations are in a rapid decline. Off the coast of Queensland, Australia, for example, researchers have seen a 92% decline over the last 50 years. And it's all due to human activity.
Bycatch in the commercial fishing industry, illegal poaching and finning, entanglement in ghost nets, and the bioaccumulation of toxins associated with the ingestion of plastic are just a few of the biggest threats they face. If we are going to save great white sharks - and the ocean - we must work together to address these challenges.
4 ways you can help great white sharks
Don't order shark fin soup or support restaurants that serve it
Reduce your personal consumption of single-use plastics and recycle what you can't avoid
Support nonprofits that are dedicated to saving sharks like Project AWARE and Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation
Wear your Great White Shark Bracelets to raise awareness about the important role sharks play in the marine ecosystem and why they need our protection
It's Plastic Free July!
Pull a pound and do your part to eliminate single-use plastics from your life.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Looks like you missed a few of our emails!
We went ahead and summarized the week's highlights in this email so you can stay in the loop. We got you!
4ocean x Stasher Bags are back in stock
Our 4ocean x Stasher Reusable Storage Bags sold out in just 48 hours! Since these were such a huge hit, we made it a priority to get these back in stock as soon as possible. They're back now, but with one small adjustment. Since we had to rush the order, we weren't able to have a 4ocean logo applied like our previous batch had. We definitely plan on adding that back to future orders, but wanted to make sure these were available to you during the holiday season. We also added two new storage bag sizes to our website! Now, you can choose between our snack, sandwich, and mid-size standup bags or you can shop the bundle and get all three! Make sure to order fast before they disappear again.
Our braided bracelet collection keeps growing!
We continue to roll our braided versions of your favorite beaded bracelets. This week, we introduced our Great Barrier Reef Braided Bracelet. This bright aqua color is a real show stopper and the perfect way to start conversations about ocean conservation.
October's bracelet of the month
This month, we're shining a spotlight on the ocean's unseen heroes - plankton! We know they may not be the cutest or most charismatic creatures in the ocean, but life on this planet wouldn't be possible without these microscopic plants and animals. And now, with our braided and beaded bracelets in a rare triple-color design, you can help start conversations that stop plastic pollution.
Did you catch our interview on NBC?
As the global coronavirus pandemic continues, our crews are finding more and more single-use masks and gloves in our waterways. Last week, we connected with NBC's Ellison Barber to share our experience recovering marine debris during the pandemic and talk about what people can do to prevent plastic pollution.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Here's what you missed this week!
We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.
We released three new bracelets
This week, we introduced a braided version of our ever-popular Dolphin Beaded Bracelet. Yesterday was the first of August, which means we also introduced a new Bracelet of the Month. These gorgeous beaded and braided bracelets raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on White-Sided Dolphins.
Petition Amazon for plastic-free packaging
Each day, hundreds of thousands of packages are shipped via Amazon that include plastic wrapping and cushioning materials. Most of this plastic is not recyclable or is not being recycled due to lack of recycling infrastructure.
There is a great petition on change.org right now that is calling for a "plastic-free" option to be added to Amazon's checkout page. To sign this petition and help reduce plastic pollution world-wide, please visit the link below!
We're 107,680 pounds closer to 10 million!
Bali crew member holds one of the many protective face masks we find during our missions
Last week, our cleanup crews in Bali, Haiti, and Guatemala recovered a total of 107,680 pounds of trash from the oceans, rivers, and coastlines which brings our total pounds pulled to over 9,688,000. Keep an eye out for an update to see how much closer we got to our goal this past week. Every product you purchase in the next couple weeks will help us reach our goal of 10 million pounds pulled.

Coral Reef Awareness Week starts tomorrow!
Critically endangered staghorn coral that's been grown and outplanted by Coral Restoration Foundation
Tomorrow is the start of Coral Reef Awareness Week! It's an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of saving our coral reefs. Right now, a quarter of all marine species depend on corals for food and shelter. Yet a quarter of the world's coral reef systems are already considered damaged beyond repair while another two-thirds are under serious threat.
We're partnering with the amazing team at Coral Restoration Foundation to not only spread the word, but to actively support the restoration of critically endangered corals in Florida and around the world. Keep your eye on your inbox tomorrow to see how you can get involved!

Today only, get a FREE 4ocean Surfer Badge T-Shirt when you spend $50 or more.
Polyester, nylon, and other synthetic fibers are made from plastic and account for about 60% of all the clothing sold worldwide. Unlike your dryer, most washing machines don’t have filters to catch the tiny plastic fibers these materials shed. In fact, microfibers are so small that they can pass through filters in most water treatment centers and enter the ocean in wastewater discharges. If they are captured by a filter, they often enter the environment in another sewage byproduct: fertilizer. That’s why all of our apparel products are made from ultra soft 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. And now, you can get our surfer badge t-shirt FREE when you spend $50.

Wavemaker of the Month
Our Wavemaker of the Month series continues with Keyan, an avid environmentalist who believes in the importance of acting on the issue of climate change. This past May, he lost his 19-year-old brother, Haydn, who also loved the ocean and was a huge believer in preserving and restoring our planet. With the Earth in mind and Hadyn in his heart, Keyan channeled his grief into creating a fundraiser called Oceans 4 Hope. He recently surpassed his fundraising goal of $4,000, which he's used to fund the removal of more than 400 pounds of plastic and other marine debris through the 4ocean Pound+ program.
An update from our cleanup crews
Last week, our cleanup crews recovered more than 108,000 pounds of trash. In Bali, our Jembrana Riverboom Crew headed out to the Ijo Gading River where they recovered the usual types of single-use plastic waste as well as a few odd discoveries, like someone's old basketball shorts and this children's bed sheet. Daffy Duck, is that you? Say it ain't so!

Introducing the Sea Otter Braided Bracelet
The newest braided bracelet in our expanding collection comes just in time for Sea Otter Awareness Week! This sleek black and teal bracelet represents some of the cutest animals in the ocean and helps raise awareness about the threats they face from ocean plastic pollution. Order yours NOW and pull a pound of trash in honor of sea otters!
The sentinels of near-shore ecosystems
Before the Pacific Maritime Fur Trade of the 18th and 19th centuries, sea otters numbered in the hundreds of thousands and were found all along the North Pacific Rim from Japan to Mexico. Their pelts were valued because of their thick, lush fur, which was used in the production of coats, hats, and trim. As demand for sea otter pelts rose, so did the price. In fact, they became known as "soft gold" in some markets and were harvested with reckless abandon throughout their range. By 1911, sea otter populations were severely depleted and the species was on the brink of extinction.
Sea otters are considered a keystone species because they play a crucial role in maintaining healthy nearshore marine ecosystems in the Pacific. They're also considered a sentinel species, which means they act as indicators of the ocean's overall health and can alert scientists to harmful events in the marine environment. While their populations have recovered somewhat since then, it has been a slow and arduous process. Today, California's southern sea otter population includes just about 3,000 individuals. Key threats to their recovery include non-consumptive predation by sharks, disease, plastic contaminants and chemical pollutants, limited food availability, oil spills, and human disturbances.

The benefits of coral reefs
[VIDEO] What's happening to our coral reefs?
Coral reefs are found in 109 countries around the world. In the last few decades, colonies in 93 of them have experienced significant degradation. In fact, about a quarter of the world's coral reefs are already considered to be damaged beyond repair while another two thirds are severely threatened. The loss of our reefs is truly a global problem because they:
Cover just 1% of the ocean floor and support around 25% of all marine life, which means they're responsible for the highest marine biodiversity in the ocean
Drive tourism in over 100 countries around the world, providing millions of jobs and billions of dollars in income
Act as natural breakwaters that help protect shoreline communities, coastal cities, and beaches from powerful waves produced by storms
Feed entire communities of people across the globe, especially those living on islands
Support human life by providing sources of medicine that are being used to treat cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer's and other diseases
The threats to coral reefs
Coral reef killed by climate change, Phi Phi Islands, Thailand
Corals are invertebrates that require certain conditions to thrive. They're so sensitive that even a one- or two-degree shift in temperature can cause stress over time. When corals become stressed, they expel the symbiotic algae that live inside their exoskeletons and feed them - the very algae that gives them color and keeps them alive. This expulsion causes the reef to turn a ghostly white in a process scientists call coral bleaching. In addition to rising ocean temperatures, corals are also harmed by plastic pollution, industrial pollution, and sewage; chemical sunscreens; and unmanaged, high-density tourism.
In addition to rising ocean temperatures, corals are also harmed by plastic pollution, industrial pollution, and sewage; chemical sunscreens; and unmanaged, high-density tourism.
Mass coral bleaching events are occurring more often and the increased frequency is having a devastating and prolonged effect on our reefs. Corals that survive a bleaching event become weaker and more vulnerable to disease. They also struggle to grow and reproduce, which can hinder their recovery.
In just two years, half of the coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef was lost. Mass coral death has a ripple effect that impacts thousands of other species that rely on the coral community to survive - including humans.

Introducing the Manta Ray Braided Bracelet
The newest braided bracelet in our expanding collection shines a spotlight on manta rays! This aqua and teal combo is sure to catch eyes and start conversations that raise awareness about the impact plastic pollution has on our oceans and our wildlife. Get yours today to pull a pound of trash for manta rays. Keep reading to learn more about these gentle giants!
The ocean has no filter for plastic
Everything in the ocean 30 to 50 years ago used to be edible. If a manta ray opened its mouth, it was getting food. Now, up to half of what these filter feeders consume can be plastic. Commercial fishing also poses a significant threat. Entanglement, bycatch, and poaching for the illegal gill-plate trade have sent manta ray populations into a downward spiral. Climate change, habitat loss, boat strikes, and unregulated tourism also have a negative impact on manta ray populations.
It will take decades for manta ray populations to recover from unsustainable exploitation in the commercial fishing industry. The good news is that communities that once hunted manta rays have become some of their greatest protectors after learning that these beautiful creatures actually have more value, both ecologically and economically, when they're alive and allowed to thrive.

Pull a pound for sea turtles
Green sea turtle, Maui, Hawaii
Six out of seven sea turtle species are considered vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered. It's estimated that over half of all sea turtles have ingested some form of plastic in their lifetime. When plastic is in the water where sea turtles feed, they can easily mistake the trash for food. Ingesting ocean plastic can cause internal blockages that often lead to starvation or death. Deaths from entanglement are harder to quantify.
The risk of plastic ingestion is especially high for sea turtle hatchlings that encounter microplastic pollution in the sargassum, or floating patches of algae, where they live and feed during their first weeks of life. Sea turtles that avoid eating ocean plastic are still at significant risk of becoming entangled in ghost nets, buoy lines, and other plastic fishing gear, which can cause severe injuries that lead to infection or death.
If we are going to save sea turtles, we must end the overproduction and overconsumption of plastic that's polluting our oceans, support sustainable fisheries, and establish more marine protected areas.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Looks like you missed a few of our emails!
Don't worry! We went ahead and summarized the big announcements below for you. We got you!
We introduced a new Bamboo Utensil Set
We partnered with To-Go Ware to expand our line of single-use alternatives. Our new bamboo utensil set features a fork, knife, spoon, and a set of chopsticks, which are packaged in a 4ocean-branded case that's made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. Over the course of its lifecycle, one 4ocean x To-Go Ware Bamboo Utensil Set prevents an average of 1,300 single-use plastic utensils from entering our landfills and polluting our oceans. Get yours now and ditch disposable silverware for good!
T-shirts are back in stock and better than ever!
We know you've been waiting patiently for our ultra-soft, 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton t-shirts to come back in stock (especially the blue). Now they're back so you can proudly rep the clean ocean movement wherever you go! Get yours before they're gone (again).
Our braided bracelet collection got a bit bigger
This week, we introduced two new braided bracelets. Our yellow and black bracelet honors penguins while our forest green bracelet shines a spotlight on the threats facing endangered leatherback sea turtles. Shop now to pull pounds and start conversations about the actions we can take to protect our oceans and our wildlife from the threat of plastic pollution.

A HUGE 4ocean shout-out to those that supported our mission last week:
Jeff from California 100 lbs. pulled
Rita from Arizona 40 lbs pulled
Catherine from Colorado 100 lbs. pulled

Manatees need more love! Here's why
Pull a pound for manatees

About
Have you seen our Manatee Bracelet?
Back in 2018, we released a bracelet to raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on manatees. The clean ocean movement has grown a lot since then, so we're reintroducing our Manatee Beaded Bracelet to give our new members a chance to pull a pound for these adorable and endangered animals. Keep reading to learn more about our portly friends and why they need our help!
We must protect our roly-polies!
West Indian manatee, Crystal River, Florida
Manatees are probably some of the gentlest creatures in the ocean. As herbivores, they love to munch on seagrass, mangrove leaves, algae, and other water plants. Living a lifestyle we can only dream of, they spend up to 8 hours a day foraging and eat as much as 10% of their body weight in water veggies every day.
Endlessly curious, manatees use their mouths and flippers to explore their environment and their friendly nature often drives them to investigate what other animals would hide from, including boats and people. While these characteristics have earned them cute nicknames like floaty potatoes and roly-polies, it's also a cause for concern.
Manatees can ingest anything that gets stuck on the seafloor, including fishing line and hooks, plastic bags, and balloons. They're also easily entangled in anchor lines, crab trap buoys, and abandoned fishing gear, which can cause life-threatening injuries. Sadly, boat strikes are one of the leading causes of mortality.
7 ways you can help manatees
Mother and calf manatee at Three Sisters Springs
Wear your Manatee Bracelet as a way to start conversations about plastic pollution and the plight of this endangered species
If you're a member of the boating community, be sure to obey speed zone signs and keep an eye out for our portly friends
Don't feed, water, touch, or harass wild manatees; always contact your local wildlife organization if you find a manatee in distress
Reduce your consumption of single-use plastic and properly recycle plastic you can't avoid
Always clean up after yourself after fishing or a day outdoors
Donate to manatee conservation organizations like Save The Manatee Club
Florida residents can invest in speciality license plates that raise awareness about manatees and help fund conservation efforts

Introducing our triple-color Plankton Bracelets!
Order yours now and keep reading to learn more about these crucial organisms.
Get to know the unseen heroes of the ocean
There are two types of plankton: phytoplankton, which are tiny plants that use photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide to oxygen and are responsible for up to half of the oxygen we breathe, and zooplankton, which are tiny animals that eat phytoplankton and serve as prey for larger animals like krill, shrimp, fish, and some whales. Together, they form the base of the entire marine food chain.
Plastic, chemical, and nutrient pollution have a direct impact on plankton and all of the species that directly or indirectly rely on them as a food source. Climate change contributes to rising ocean temperatures that cause mass migrations and population increases that disrupt the natural balance of the ocean ecosystem. We can make a difference by reducing our plastic footprint, making informed choices, and advocating for ocean-friendly legislation.

Our friend Gaelin Rosenwaks is an explorer, marine scientist, photographer, and filmmaker who shares her passion for the ocean, fishing, and the natural world through powerful imagery, words, and adventure. Her new film documents her search for a young sperm whale named Physty (pronounced "feisty") who fell ill and beached himself off the shores of Long Island, New York, in the 1980s and inspired her to pursue a career in ocean conservation.
As a child, Gaelin visited Physty every other day with her family to watch vets take care of him until he was finally released from the boat basin where he was being cared for. The only question now is what happened to Physty? Gaelin's research is a chance to learn more about sperm whales and their family dynamics. The documentary Finding Physty is still in the midst of production, which has paused due to the pandemic.
Don't forget about white-sided dolphins
In case you missed it, our bracelet of the month for August was in honor of white-sided dolphins.
Available in both our braided and beaded bracelet styles, these eye-catching, aqua-colored bracelets help raise awareness about the impact ocean plastic has on these highly intelligent and extremely acrobatic animals.
How plastic pollution affects white-sided dolphins
Pacific white-sided dolphin, Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park, Canada
White-sided dolphins are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Like all dolphins, they are at risk for both plastic ingestion and entanglement in fishing gear. They're also sometimes killed in dolphin hunts in places like Japan and Greenland.
By ending our reliance on single-use plastics, supporting sustainable fisheries, reporting marine life in distress and fisheries violations to NOAA Fisheries Enforcement, and keeping our distance while enjoying our marine life, we can ensure these animals thrive for generations to come.

About
Introducing the Seahorse Braided Bracelet!
In 2019, we released an elegant navy and burgundy bracelet to honor seahorses and highlight the urgent need to stop bottom trawling and better protect these vulnerable and overexploited species. Now, we continue to roll out braided versions of our most popular beaded bracelets and seahorses definitely made the list. This classic color combo will catch eyes and help you start conversations about plastic pollution and its impact on our wildlife. Keep reading to learn more about these small but mighty ocean conservation ambassadors!
Small but mighty
A monogamous lifestyle and male pregnancy aren't the only things that distinguish seahorses from other marine life. Seahorses are also a flagship species, which means these charismatic fish act as ambassadors for a variety of marine conservation issues.
Every year, millions of seahorses are exploited for use as traditional medicines, tonic foods, aquarium exhibits, and souvenirs. Human activities are also degrading and destroying the coral reef, mangrove, seagrass, and estuary habitats they call home. Destructive fishing practices, particularly shrimp trawling, result in their accidental capture and contribute to habitat loss.
By ending harmful fishing practices like bottom trawling and advocating for marine protected areas, we can better protect these vulnerable and overexploited species. The best part is that protections for seahorses don't just benefit seahorses; they also protect many other marine species and ecosystems. Ultimately, saving seahorses means saving the ocean.

About
Introducing the Manta Ray Braided Bracelet

Introducing the Orca Braided Bracelet!
The more we learn about orcas, the more we love them! As we continue to roll out braided versions of some of our most popular bracelets, it's no surprise that orcas made the list.
When you purchase this bold black and white braided Orca bracelet, you'll pull a pound of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines (of course!). But even more importantly, wearing it will help you start conversations about plastic pollution and the plight of endangered orcas in the Pacific Northwest and their relatives around the world!
Not the ocean's real killers
Orcas are nicknamed "killer whales" because they have a reputation for being ferocious predators, but these highly intelligent, deeply social, and enormously powerful animals are actually not whales at all. They're the largest member of the dolphin family!
Orcas in the wild face many threats including ocean plastic, high toxicity, entanglement in marine debris, noise pollution, commercial hunting, decreased prey, and climate change.
The Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest are a microcosm that shows us the impact of these threats and just how dire the need for action really is. Experts say that approximately 75% of newborns have not survived since this orca population was first listed as endangered. It's time to change that!

4ocean x Stasher Reusable Storage Bags
You guys are amazing! Our first batch of Stasher Reusable Storage Bags sold out in just 48 hours! Since these were such a huge hit and the holidays are fast approaching, we made it a priority to get these back in stock as soon as possible. We're excited to announce that they are now back in stock with even more sizes, but there's one small adjustment. Due to the rushed order, we weren't able to have a 4ocean logo applied to the bags like our first batch had. Don't worry, each and every bag sold still pulls a pound of trash from the ocean with purchase!
We also added two more bag sizes and a different style! Now, you can choose between the snack, sandwich, and mid-size standup bags. Want all three? Shop the bundle option! Remember, these will go fast so please make sure to order fast before they disappear again.
Swap out single-use plastic bags and food containers today
Plastic sandwich and snack bags have been a lunchbox staple for decades. But now, we know that these convenient plastic baggies are just one of many single-use plastics that are trashing our oceans. The average U.S. family uses about 500 single-use plastic storage bags each year. Plastic food containers aren't an ideal solution either because they're not very durable and aren't efficient at keeping food fresh. They are often thrown away, which only exacerbates the problem of plastic waste and pollution.
We partnered with Stasher to create 4ocean Reusable Storage Bags because they are a super convenient alternative to single-use plastic sandwich and snack bags. Since 2016, Stasher bags have prevented over a billion single-use plastic bags from entering the ocean and our landfills. Stock up now and prevent even more single-use plastic pollution!

25% OFF Select Shark Bracelets!
Shark Awareness Day is celebrated on July 14 every year to highlight the important role sharks play in the ocean ecosystem and raise awareness about the threats they face. For a long time, these apex predators have been misunderstood and vilified. Shark Awareness Day acknowledges the fact that how we talk about sharks matters.
In support of Shark Awareness Day, we're offering 25% OFF select shark bracelets and our exclusive 3-Pound Pack for 24 hours only. This offer is only available while supplies last, so hurry before these bracelets - and the sharks they represent - are gone.

Let's talk sharks!
With more than 400 million years of evolution behind them, sharks have survived all kinds of planet-altering events while many other species simply vanished. Right now, 25% of shark species are listed as endangered, threatened, or near-threatened due to threats like plastic pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss. In the last few decades, some shark populations have declined by as much as 80 percent.
Sharks play a crucial role in keeping the ocean environment balanced and healthy. They feed on the sick and weak; they also help control fish populations that could become destructive if left unchecked. They are the protectors of the ocean, but now they need to be protected from our plastic waste.
25% OFF for Shark Awareness Day!
Every product purchased helps fund our global ocean cleanup operation and supports a movement to end the world's reliance on single-use plastic.

About
An underwater cleanup at Lake Worth Lagoon
Last month, we partnered with Manatee Lagoon and Loggerhead Marinelife Center for an underwater cleanup of Lake Worth Lagoon, a warm-water refuge for endangered manatees. Every year during the cooler months, hundreds of manatees congregate here to bask in the warm-water outflows from Florida Power & Light Company's Clean Energy Center in Riviera Beach, Florida, but the presence of two stormwater outflow pipes introduce lots of plastic and other harmful debris into this important estuary.
We love manatees and you should, too!
Manatees are some of the gentlest creatures in the ocean. As herbivores, they love to munch on seagrass, mangrove leaves, algae, and other water plants. They spend up to 8 hours a day foraging and eat as much as 10% of their body weight in water veggies every day. few decades.
While they may look big and blubbery, manatees actually have very little fat to keep them warm. (Their large size is due to their incredibly long intestines, which can measure over 100 feet!) When temperatures dip below 68?F, they can experience potentially fatal cold stress. Natural springs and outflows from power plants are crucial warm-water refuges that help them regulate their body temperatures during our cooler season. Plastic and other debris in these areas can pose significant ingestion and entanglement risks.

About
Introducing Hot Pink Flamingo Bracelets!
With legs like stilts, beaks like boomerangs, and flamboyant pink feathers, flamingos are perhaps the most recognizable wading bird in the world. Because of their distinct appearance, flamingos are fabulous wildlife ambassadors that illustrate the beauty and diversity we stand to lose if we fail to address the threats they face.
Our hot pink beaded and bracelet bracelets will help catch eyes and start conversations that raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on flamingos and all our wildlife. Keep reading to learn more!
Pull a pound for flamingos
Flamingos live among the shallow lakes, mangrove swamps, sandy islands, and coastal areas of Africa, Asia, America, and Europe. While no flamingo species is considered endangered at this time, three of the six flamingo species are considered near threatened. The biggest challenges in conserving flamingos and other wading birds include plastic and chemical pollution, climate change, habitat loss, and the animal entertainment industry.
By reducing our consumption of single-use plastic, supporting sustainable fisheries, and keeping the conversation about plastic pollution going, we can protect these fabulously flamboyant birds for generations to come.

Introducing our White-Sided Dolphin Bracelets
White-sided dolphins, named for their distinctive coloring, come in two forms: the Atlantic white-sided and Pacific white-sided. These dolphins are highly intelligent, highly social, and extremely playful. They can often be seen "bow riding," or swimming near the front of a ship, and jumping, flipping, somersaulting, or even spinning in the air. Their acrobatic displays can put even the greatest Olympians to shame.
Available in both our beaded and braided styles, these bracelets raise awareness about the impact of ocean plastic on white-sided dolphins and the other threats they face.
Pull a pound for white-sided dolphins
Pacific white-sided dolphin, British Columbia, Canada
White-sided dolphins are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Like all dolphins, they are at risk for both plastic ingestion and entanglement in fishing gear. They're also sometimes killed in dolphin hunts in places like Japan and Greenland.
By ending our reliance on single-use plastics, supporting sustainable fisheries, reporting marine life in distress and fisheries violations to NOAA Fisheries Enforcement, and keeping our distance while enjoying our marine life, we can ensure these animals thrive for generations to come.
HURRICANE ISAIAS UPDATE
4ocean Haiti is safe and South Florida continues to prepare
Hurricane Isaias recently passed our cleanup operation base in Haiti and is heading towards our world headquarters in South Florida. Rest assured that our teams began preparations several weeks ago prior to the start of hurricane season and are fully prepared for these storms.
Our marine debris sorting yards have been cleared, all loose debris has been baled and stored, vessels and equipment have been moved inland and secured, electrical devices have been powered down and protected, windows have been shuttered, and our staff was sent home early so they can be with their loved ones and take necessary steps to protect their personal property.
The Haiti team experienced heavy rains and high winds but there was minimal damage to our operation base and all staff members are safe and sound.
Current future cast models have the storm missing our world headquarters in Florida but we will continue to update you all if anything changes. Thank you to the entire clean ocean movement for your ongoing support!

About
Introducing the Whale Braided Bracelet
Whales are some of the mightiest animals in the ocean, but they're still vulnerable to plastic pollution. Commercial fishing nets can weigh up to 10,000 pounds. Whales entangled in fishing gear can experience extreme energy depletion from the extra burden of dragging this debris behind them. Entanglement is still the leading cause of whale deaths globally.
We are excited to announce that we'll be releasing four more of our 2018 best selling bracelets in their braided form over the next few weeks! This all starts today with our very popular whale bracelet. If you can't tell from the picture above, this bracelet is absolutely gorgeous! Please help us continue raising awareness about the impact ocean plastic has on these magnificent creatures by purchasing the Whale Braided Bracelet today while supplies last!
Pull a pound for whales
Southern right whales, Valdes Peninsula, Argentina
Ocean plastic can absorb chemicals called persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the surrounding seawater. These toxins enter a whale's body when they ingest contaminated plastic or consume prey that has eaten contaminated plastic. The toxins are sometimes stored within their blubber and can impact their health, behavior, and ability to reproduce.
Bycatch, whaling, captivity, and climate change are also significant threats to whale populations around the world. Ending our reliance on single-use plastics, improving global waste management infrastructure, supporting the creation of marine protected areas, supporting sustainable fisheries, and recovering plastic that's already polluting the ocean are just a few ways we can help protect whales for future generations.

About
Introducing the Penguin Braided Bracelet
Our braided bracelet collection keeps getting bigger! The top selling penguin bracelet is now available in our braided style. Pull a pound for penguins and start some conversations by getting yours today. To learn more about penguins and how they're affected by ocean plastic pollution, continue reading below.
Plastic on land and more at sea
Penguins are one of the most endangered seabirds on earth. In fact, more than half of all penguin species are listed as threatened on the IUCN Red List. Plastic invades even the most remote penguin habitats, washing up on nesting beaches and fouling colonies throughout the Southern Hemisphere where it poses both ingestion and entanglement risks.
By reducing our plastic footprint and supporting legislation that addresses waste management deficits and works to end the cycle of overproduction and overconsumption that leads to plastic pollution, we can protect penguins and their habitats for generations to come.

Looks like you missed a few of our emails!
Don't worry! We went ahead and summarized the big announcements below for you. We got you!
We introduced 4ocean Beach Gear!
Whether you're beachfront or lakeside, backyard or poolside, comfort and style are never far away with our new 4ocean Signature Beach Chairs and Umbrella. We're super stoked about the fact that all fabric and plastic parts are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. We've got chairs for you, chairs for the kiddos, and enough shade for the whole family with our market-style 7-foot umbrella.
Two new braided bracelets added to our collection
We continue to expand our bracelet collection with braided versions of your favorite beaded bracelets. This week, we introduced the black and teal Sea Otter Braided Bracelet and the aqua and teal Manta Ray Braided Bracelet. These gorgeous additions are sure to catch eyes and start conversations that get more people involved in the clean ocean movement.
Climate Week is almost over!
Plastic and climate change are intricately linked. In May 2019, the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) published a report showing how plastic emits greenhouse gases at every stage of its lifecycle. The study's authors warned that if demand for plastics continued to rise, the material's contribution to climate change would grow significantly and make it "impossible" for the world to meet the Paris Climate Accord's goal of preventing global warming from exceeding 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial averages, which UN scientists have said would result in catastrophic climate change. Despite their dire warning, overall plastic production is expected to triple by 2050. Shop our line of single-use plastic alternatives and start reducing your plastic footprint.
Cleaning up the coastlines in Guatemala
This month, the 4ocean Guatemala crew has been focused on cleaning up the coastal mangrove forests near Amatique Bay. In one of this week's emails, we gave the clean ocean movement insight into all the different ways mangroves benefit coastal communities and the planet and encouraged them to pull a pound for mangroves. We think you should, too!

Here's what you missed this week!
We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.
We introduced two new braided bracelets
This week, we introduced our Whale and Coral Reef Bracelets in our new braided style.
Plastic Free July is in full swing
Millions of people around the world are taking the Plastic Free July challenge and we've been helping out by sharing some of our best tips and tricks both in our emails and on our social profiles. If you're not already following us, we encourage you to do so and see what else you can do to end your reliance on single-use plastic.
Operational update
Between Friday, 6/26, and Thursday, 7/2, our cleanup crews in Bali, Haiti, and Guatemala recovered a total of 144,463 pounds of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines for a running total of more than 9,367,000 pounds. Every purchase you make gets us closer to our 10 million pound milestone.
Whale shark tracking update
Last year, we partnered with Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation to raise awareness about the impact of ocean plastic on whale sharks, a species whose populations have declined by half in the last 75 years. We recently found out where Spot the Whale Shark traveled over the last year and shared an update.
By determining what areas of the ocean are important to whale sharks like Spot, Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation can determine what areas of the ocean require new or more protections, which gives advocacy groups the ability to approach legislators about establishing marine protected areas.

About
Introducing the Jellyfish Braided Bracelet
The newest member of our expanding braided bracelet collection is our periwinkle blue Jellyfish Bracelet! This gorgeous light blue color is sure to catch eyes and start conversations about the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans. Get yours now and keep reading to learn more about the backbone of the marine food chain.
Jellyfish are crucial to a healthy ocean
Jellyfish are a dietary staple for animals like ocean sunfish and leatherback sea turtles. Some marine mammals and seabirds also consume jellies when other prey is scarce. As ocean temperatures rise and marine animals migrate into new regions, jellies become even more essential as a food source. Yet, as plastic trash infiltrates our oceans, predators often mistakenly consume plastic bags and other trash in pursuit of a jellyfish meal.
The ocean absorbs about a quarter of the carbon dioxide that human activities (like plastic production and pollution) emit into the atmosphere. As jellyfish migrate from the ocean's surface to the twilight zone, they transfer carbon from surface waters to the depths of the ocean, which prevents it from returning into the air as a heat-trapping greenhouse gas. So while jellyfish may not have the best reputation with beachgoers, we hope this bracelet inspires you to learn more about these essential marine animals.

A natural treasure on the verge of collapse

About
Introducing the Great White Shark Bracelets!

About
Introducing the Dolphin Braided Bracelet
Dolphins delight us with their playful antics and warm our hearts with their friendly faces. Because they possess a high degree of intelligence and have a sociable nature, we see a lot of ourselves in these amazing creatures. However, dolphins are dwindling in numbers and, in some cases, are on the brink of extinction.
We've recreated our ever-popular Dolphin Beaded Bracelet in our new braided style to continue to raise awareness about the impact of ocean plastic on these beloved sea creatures.
Pull a pound for dolphins
Bottlenose dolphins, Roatan, Honduras
One out of every four species of dolphin is threatened with extinction. Many have been found ingesting ocean plastic, which can cause fatal tears and blockages. Of equal concern is ocean plastic ingestion by their prey species, which introduces chemical pollutants into their bodies that can cause significant health concerns.
Entanglement in fishing gear kills more than 300,000 dolphins, whales, and porpoises every year. Dolphins are also hunted, captured, and sold into the billion-dollar captivity industry, but everything we know about these intelligent creatures shows us that they don't belong in concrete tanks performing tricks for our amusement.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Here's what you missed this week!
We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.
We released two new braided bracelets
We've been releasing some of our best selling beaded bracelets in our new braided style. This week, we introduced the pure white Polar Bear Braided Bracelet and our ever popular lime green Sea Turtle Braided Bracelet.
We donated to coral restoration
Coral Restoration Foundation helps restore our reefs by growing and outplanting critically endangered coral species
To raise awareness about the world's dying coral reefs and support crucial coral restoration projects, we donated $2 to Coral Restoration Foundation for every Coral Reef and Great Barrier Reef Bracelet purchased during Coral Reef Awareness Week, which ended last Sunday. We were able to donate thousands of dollars, which will go a long way toward saving our reefs.
We're getting close to 10 million pounds pulled!
Last week, our cleanup crews in Bali, Haiti, and Guatemala recovered a total of 135,392 pounds of trash from the oceans, rivers, and coastlines for a running total of more than 9,555,000 pounds. Keep an eye out for an update to see how much closer we got to our goal this past week. Every product you purchase in the next couple weeks will help us reach our goal of 10 million pounds pulled.
Plastic Free July is almost over
Don't be discouraged if you haven't gone completely plastic free yet. We don't need a few people going plastic free perfectly, we need lots of people doing their best to eliminate as much plastic as they can. This week, we provided some new tips to support members of the clean ocean movement participating in the Plastic Free July challenge.

About
Introducing our White-Sided Dolphin Bracelets

We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.
We're advocates for the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act
A message from our CoFounder and CEO, Alex Schulze
4ocean has always put the ocean first. Ending the ocean plastic crisis is our only mission. And while we recover harmful marine debris and empower individuals to end their reliance on single-use plastic, we know that these actions aren't enough to end the ocean plastic crisis on their own.
We must also take bold steps to advocate for policy change that will hold brands, manufacturers, and the plastics industry accountable for their significant contributions to the ocean plastic crisis.
That's why we're calling on every member of the clean ocean movement to join us in our support of the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act (BFFPPA), a comprehensive piece of federal legislation that will help stop plastic pollution at its source.
25% OFF cleanup gear this week only
July 1 was the start of both Plastic Free July, a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to ocean plastic pollution, and Clean Beaches Week, which is a celebration held annually from July 1-7 to raise awareness about the importance of clean beaches and drive action on behalf of our oceans and coastlines.
We released our Great White Shark Bracelets
Available in both our braided and beaded bracelet styles, our Great White Shark Bracelets help raise awareness about the impact ocean plastic, finning, and poaching have on one of the most misunderstood fish in the ocean.
We pulled 300,000+ pounds in June 2020
Our captains and crews have had another incredible month. Our crews in Haiti, Bali, and Guatemala pulled a total of more than 300,000 pounds of trash from the ocean, rivers, and coastlines this month, for a grand total of more than 9,214,000 pounds pulled. Our Bali crew also logged our largest daily haul on June 25, which weighed in at 11,701 pounds.

About
Introducing Hot Pink Flamingo Bracelets!

About
Wavemaker of the Month
Our Wavemaker of the Month series continues with Keyan, an avid environmentalist who believes in the importance of acting on the issue of climate change. This past May, he lost his 19-year-old brother, Haydn, who also loved the ocean and was a huge believer in preserving and restoring our planet. With the Earth in mind and Hadyn in his heart, Keyan channeled his grief into creating a fundraiser called Oceans 4 Hope.
Keyan recently surpassed his fundraising goal of $4,000, which he's used to fund the removal of more than 400 pounds of plastic and other marine debris through the 4ocean Pound+ program. We're incredibly humbled by Keyan's support and are honored to pull these pounds in honor of Haydn and his passion for ocean conservation.
"After the loss of my brother, I was motivated to turn my pain into purpose. Since Haydn loved the ocean so much, I decided to raise money and use those funds to support 4ocean, who I knew were making a positive change in our world."

About
Introducing the Dolphin Braided Bracelet

About
Introducing the Coral Reef Braided Bracelet!
We're continuing to roll out our 2018 best selling bracelets in our NEW braided style and today's best seller is the Coral Reef Bracelet! Coral reefs are found in 109 countries around the world. They cover just 1% of the ocean floor yet support around 25% of all marine life. Over the last few decades, coral colonies in 93 countries have experienced significant degradation, largely due to human activity.
Help us continue to raise awareness about the importance of these marine habitats and the devastating impact that climate change and ocean plastic have on them by purchasing the Coral Reef Braided Bracelet today!
Pull a pound for coral reefs
Coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Climate change is the largest contributor to coral bleaching events. Around 90% of the planet's excess heat is absorbed by the ocean. These higher temperatures can cause prolonged heat stress that leads to mass coral bleaching. A bleaching event doesn't necessarily kill coral, though it can if the stress isn't alleviated. Coral that survives a bleaching event becomes weaker, struggles to grow and reproduce, and becomes more vulnerable to disease.
Plastic is a threat because it contributes to climate change at every phase of its lifecycle. Once it enters the ocean, it can smother coral reefs weakened by our changing climate and cause abrasions that often lead to deadly infections. About a quarter of the world's coral reefs are already considered damaged beyond repair. If the current rate of degradation and die-off continues, coral reefs could disappear in just a few decades.

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Here's what you missed this week!
We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.

A new study found microplastic in farm soil contributes to chemical pollution in plants.
Plastic pollution isn't just environmental. It's personal.
Shop
About
Microplastic is in farm soil!
Researchers say that microplastic is getting into farm soil and that these tiny pieces of plastic are showing up in our fruits, veggies, and yes, in our bodies. This is especially concerning when you realize that trace elements of toxic chemicals like cadmium, which is found naturally in the phosphate rock used to make agricultural fertilizers and shed from batteries and car tires, can be absorbed by plastic.
In fact, this study found that samples of wheat plants grown in soil polluted by both cadmium, a known carcinogen, and plastic had higher concentrations of cadmium than samples with just one or none of these additives.
Get out there and clean!
There are many things we can do to reduce our plastic footprint and stop plastic pollution. Supporting ocean-friendly legislation like the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act is crucial, but it won't address plastic that's already polluting our planet. By cleaning up locally, you can get plastic out of the environment before it becomes microplastic.
The world's largest volunteer cleanup event, International Coastal Cleanup Day, is coming up on Saturday, September 19, and we're encouraging every member of the clean ocean movement to get involved. So stock up on 4ocean Cleanup Gear now and get out to pull some pounds in your neighborhood!

About
It's Shark Week!
A message from Jack Fishman, the Community Conservation Officer at Project AWARE, our partner for Shark Week!
We celebrate Shark Week every year to correct misconceptions about sharks, raise awareness about the role they play in keeping our oceans healthy, and advance conservation efforts globally.
This week only, we will be donating $2 from each shark bracelet we sell to Project AWARE, a nonprofit organization that works with the diving community to advance ocean conservation and protect the world's sharks and rays.
This includes both styles of our Shark and Great White Shark bracelets as well as our Whale Shark Beaded Bracelet and shark themed 2-Pound Packs.
1 bracelet purchased = $2 donated
In addition to advocating for shark conservation, Project AWARE works with the dive community to clean our oceans
Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs) have the ability to set international fishing limits for shark and ray populations fished by numerous countries. But their actions for sharks and rays have been seriously inadequate and their populations remain underprotected.
Project AWARE has formed the Shark League to help secure science-based shark and ray catch limits, strict protections for endangered species, and strong, enforceable bans on shark finning.
We're donating $2 from the sale of each shark bracelet sold during Shark Week to support these crucial conservation efforts. But you need to act fast because Shark Week ends this Sunday, August 16!

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Here's what you missed this week!
We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.

About
INTRODUCING
4ocean x To-Go Ware Bamboo Utensil Set
Our line of single-use plastic alternatives continues to grow with the introduction of the 4ocean x To-Go Ware Bamboo Utensil Set. This bamboo utensil set features a fork, knife, spoon, and a set of chopsticks; all packaged in a 4ocean-branded case that's made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.
Over the course of its lifecycle, one 4ocean x To-Go Ware Bamboo Utensil set prevents an average of 1,300 single-use plastic utensils from entering our landfills and polluting our oceans. Act fast because the last time we introduced a new item we sold out in just 48 hours!
Why bamboo?
Did you know that most disposable forks, spoons, and knives are made from polystyrene #6? Polystyrene is a cheap, brittle plastic that leaches potentially toxic chemicals, especially when heated. And worse, it's nearly impossible to recycle, which means these products enter our landfills and pollute our oceans.
Biodegradable utensils aren't the answer either. While they're not made from plastic, they do require very specific conditions in order to compost and most industrial facilities don't meet the requirements. Instead, bio-plastics are pulled from the waste stream and tossed into our landfills. As they break down, they create methane gas that contributes to climate change which also harms our oceans.
Bamboo is an extremely durable material that can withstand a great deal of use without damage. Even better, bamboo's extensive root system quickly regenerates new shoots after it's harvested, which means it's a sustainable, long-lasting, non-petroleum based material with endless useful applications.

We noticed that you didn't get a chance to read some of our newsletters this week, so we took it upon ourselves to wrap everything up in this neat little package for you.
It's Coral Reef Awareness Week!
Coral Restoration Foundation hard at work!
To raise awareness about the world's dying coral reefs and support crucial coral restoration projects, we're donating $2 to Coral Restoration Foundation for every Coral Reef and Great Barrier Reef Bracelet sold through Sunday, July 19.
Tuesday was Shark Awareness Day
To raise awareness about the importance of saving sharks, whose populations are declining globally due to threats like plastic pollution and overfishing, we offered 25% off select shark bracelets. This was only a one day offer so it's too late to capitalize now, but let this be a reminder to keep an eye on our emails in the future!
We're on our way to 10 million pounds pulled!
Haiti crew members work together to pull super sacks filled with plastic
Last week, our cleanup crews in Bali, Haiti, and Guatemala recovered a total of 159,757 pounds of trash from the oceans, rivers, and coastlines for a running total of more than 9,476,000 pounds. Keep an eye out for the update coming on Wednesday to see what we accomplished this week.
A conversation about ocean friendly legislation
On Friday, we went live on Instagram with Jennie Romer, Legal Associate at the Surfrider Foundation's Plastic Pollution Initiative, for an in-depth conversation about the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act (BFFPPA), a crucial piece of legislation that's in front of Congress right now. Be sure to keep an eye out for the replay coming in an email later this week.

Shark Awareness Day is celebrated on July 14 every year to highlight the important role sharks play in the ocean ecosystem and raise awareness about the threats they face. In support of Shark Awareness Day, we're offering 25% OFF select shark bracelets and our exclusive 3-Pound Pack for 24 hours only. This offer is only available while supplies last, so hurry before these bracelets - and the sharks they represent - are gone.
This offer ends in:

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Looks like you missed a few of our emails!
Don't worry! We went ahead and summarized the big announcements below for you.

Introducing the Great Barrier Reef Braided Bracelet
We continue to release braided versions of your favorite beaded bracelets. Today, we're introducing our Great Barrier Reef Braided Bracelet. This bright aqua color is a real show stopper and the perfect way to start conversations about ocean conservation. Add this beauty to your collection and keep reading to learn more about the world's largest reef!
A global icon faces a global threat
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's seven natural wonders. It's the largest living structure on Earth and covers an incredible 344,440 km2 - an area about the size of Italy. In fact, the reef is so big it can actually be seen from space. One of the most complex and biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, it supports nearly 9,000 aquatic species. It's a source of incredible fascination that draws about 2 million visitors from around the world every year.
Yet the cumulative effects of climate change, poor water quality, coastal development, ocean plastic, overfishing, and extreme weather events are weakening the reef's resilience and ability to recover, which impacts the entire marine ecosystem that relies on it to survive. In just two years, half of the coral cover on the Great Barrier Reef was lost due to climate change. Plastic contributes to climate change at every stage of its lifecycle, which is why it's so important to reduce our consumption of this material every way we can.

Introducing the Polar Bear Braided Bracelet
We're continuing to roll out our 2018 best selling bracelets in our new braided style and today is the Polar Bear Bracelet! You'll want to order fast before these super unique, all white braided bracelets sell out quickly.
By purchasing a Polar Bear Braided Bracelet, you'll pull a pound of trash from the oceans, rivers, and coastlines while continuing to raise awareness about the impact of ocean plastic on these beloved marine mammals.
Pull a pound for polar bears
Polar bear on fjord ice, Svalbard, Norway
The sea ice habitats polar bears need to survive are disappearing as the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere increases. Without sea ice, polar bears are unable to hunt for food, which is an enormous threat to their survival. Plastic is among the most significant and rapidly growing sources of industrial greenhouse gas emissions, which are emitted during every stage of its lifecycle.
If we're going to save polar bears, we must protect their sea ice habitats by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including those associated with plastic.

Sharks ingesting plastic is a "cause for concern"
A small-spotted catshark, one of the four species included in a new study on microplastic ingestion in native UK shark species
A new study on microplastic ingestion in demersal sharks (bottom dwellers) found that 67% of them had ingested microplastic. Many of the microplastics they discovered were a type of plastic fiber known as synthetic cellulose, the material found in polyester clothing and hygiene products such as PPE face masks. While sharks will eventually excrete these fibers, there is a risk that the inorganic pollutants and chemicals absorbed by the plastic could leak into their bodies.
Sharks' susceptibility to microplastic ingestion has been largely understudied, but it's well known that microplastics negatively influence the feeding behavior, development, reproduction, and life span of other marine species, especially invertebrates like zooplankton and crustaceans.

Seabirds and the bracelet that represents their plight haven't gotten the attention they deserve.

About
Have you seen our Seabird Bracelet?
To help bring more attention to the plight of seabirds around the world, we're reintroducing our stunning, sunshine-yellow Seabird Bracelet as a way to give members of the clean ocean movement another chance to pull a pound for these important and fascinating creatures.
Seabirds are to the ocean what the canary is to the coal mine. Changes in their habits and populations warn us of unseen threats happening beneath the ocean's surface. Right now, nearly half of all seabird species are in known or suspected declines due to threats like plastic pollution, commercial fishing, and climate change.
Seabirds are soaring toward extinction, but we can help
Puffins are a vulnerable species, which means they're likely to become endangered unless threats decrease and reproduction increases
Plastic ingestion by seabirds was first documented in the 1960s and has been steadily increasing ever since. At least 40% of seabird species are known to ingest plastic currently, but experts predict that this will rise to 99% by 2050. In the next 30 years, nearly every seabird on earth will have eaten plastic.
It's not just grown seabirds that are consuming plastic either. Many chicks are fed plastic by parents who have mistaken it for food. Sharp plastic fragments can cause fatal internal injuries and soft plastics like balloons can block their digestive tract. Entanglement and bycatch are other potentially deadly consequences of commercial fishing, while climate change is causing crucial habitats to disappear.
The speed at which seabird populations are declining is another indicator that our efforts to recover ocean plastic and prevent more from entering the ocean are not only necessary, but mission-critical.

Manatees need more love! Here's why

About
Have you seen our Manatee Bracelet?

About
It's Shark Week!

Introducing the Hawaiian Monk Seal Braided Bracelet!
We all have a favorite color, but no one loves their favorite color quite like purple people. And that's super important because Hawaiian monk seals need visibility. This gorgeous braided bracelet is sure to catch eyes and start conversations about plastic pollution and its impact on one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world.
Of course, every Hawaiian Monk Seal Bracelet purchased funds the removal of one pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines. So shop now and pull a pound today! And of course, keep reading to learn more about these adorable creatures, the threats they face, and the actions we can take to help save them.
Ho''ola i ka moana Heal the ocean
Native to Hawai'i, Hawaiian monk seals can't be found anywhere else in the world. Their Hawaiian name, ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua (pronounced ee-lee-oh ho-low ee ka oo-ah-oo-ah), means "dog running in rough water." And let's be honest, seals are really just dogs for mermaids, right?
These adorable creatures have existed for over 10 million years. In the late 19th century, they were hunted to the brink of extinction for their skins. Now, there are fewer than 1,400 Hawaiian monk seals left in the wild, which makes them one of the world's most endangered marine mammals.
Protected under the Endangered Species Act, which makes it illegal to hunt, capture, or harass Hawaiian monk seals, Hawaiian monk seals still face many threats. Among all seal species, they have one of the highest rates of entanglement in fishing gear and other marine debris. Rising sea levels associated with climate change threaten their habitat and their food supply while human encroachment, disease, and very low genetic variation also factor into their inability to fully recover their population.
5 ways you can help Hawaiian monk seals
The survival of this species is almost entirely dependent on conservation efforts that promote their wellness and recovery. Luckily, there are many things we can do to advance conservation efforts! Here are just a few:
Donate to or volunteer with organizations like The Marine Mammal Center; they run a hospital specifically for injured, ill, and orphaned Hawaiian monk seals called Ke Kai Ola and do amazing work on behalf of these animals
Support sustainable fisheries and advocate for legislation that addresses the ocean plastic crisis
Limit your consumption of single-use plastic and encourage others to join you
If you live in or have the opportunity to visit Hawaii and see these animals in the wild, keep a respectful distance and always report animals in distress
Wear your purple Hawaiian Monk Seal Bracelets as a way to start conversations about the problem of plastic pollution and raise awareness about the actions we can all take to save animals impacted by our trash
