Hi Jon,
Thank you kindly for reaching out to us. Unfortunately, Second Sight recently announced we have suspended the production of Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System (RP Retinal Prosthesis Implantable device) surgeries in order to accelerate the development of the Orion® Cortical Prosthesis System.
While, the Argus II is intended to only treat people with profound Retinitis Pigmentosa, the Orion Cortical Prosthesis System is intended to treat nearly all forms of blindness, including Retinitis Pigmentosa. We are truly excited for this clinical next-generation device and the potential to provide functional vision to more people than ever before.
I would be more than happy to assist you with more information on the Orion Cortical Prosthesis System.
The Orion is an implanted cortical stimulation device with potential to provide a form of useful vision to individuals who are blind due to a wide range of causes including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, optic nerve injury or disease, or forms of cancer and trauma.
The Orion System converts images captured by a miniature video camera mounted on glasses into a series of small electrical pulses. The device bypasses diseased or injured eye anatomy and transmits these electrical pulses wirelessly to an array of electrodes implanted on the surface of the brain’s visual cortex, to provide the perception of patterns of light.
The device is not available commercially. A six-patient, feasibility study of the Orion I is currently underway in the U.S. at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Below is the link to our government webpage with information regarding the ongoing 5 year Orion Early Feasibility Study including the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Please review for more information about the general requirements that were in place during our last enrollment.
