This email was supposed to be about fall baking (which is actually my favorite kind of baking).

?

But with the West Coast burning,?it felt strange to send you a message about how excited I am to start baking pumpkin pop tarts.?

?

The air in Portland (where I have been living for the past month) hit hazardous levels this weekend and the city was cloaked in a thick layer of smoke for days. It just felt wrong to not acknowledge it.?

?

2020 has been a rough year. Our world is changing in so many ways, and while I really hope that our society can rise to the occasion and grow from the experiences we have faced this year- I think it is important to acknowledge something else.?

?

It is okay to not feel okay.?

?

It is okay to feel anxious, depressed, confused, or angry.?

?

To have gained a few (or more than a few in my case) pounds during this time. To not be perfect at?homeschooling your kids. Or to not feel like you are living your best life at the moment.??

?

So today, instead of recipes or food photography tips, I am just sending my love.?

?

And if you are like me and baking helps you cope in times like these, I highly encourage you to do it. And maybe you could share it with someone else who is also having a rough time.?

?

We all could use a bit of kindness right now.?

?

How are you doing with?the whole social distancing thing?

?

My dog Olive is really NOT happy about it. I keep telling her - 6 to 8 feet away! But every time we go on a walk she still tries to say hi to every single person she sees.

?

She gets all excited and wiggles her butt and puts her ears back and then...they cross the street. The devastation in her eyes is truly heartbreaking.

?

But she''s not alone. I''m struggling too. This whole situation has been?hard. And isolating. And boring.

?

So I thought, maybe you and I?could hang out? You know...virtually.?

?

I was not scheduled to give my?class for another couple of months, but since we are all sitting at home trying to find something to do, I figured...let's do it now!?

?

They draw our eyes toward the main subject and give us vital information about the flavors of said main subject.?
