Hi Emma, Time spent on a mountain bike is time well spent. And if you’ve been fortunate enough to spend any time riding in Washington recently, you know that we have a lot to be thankful for. An ever-expanding number of premium trails across our state is just scratching the surface of what we’re grateful for here at Evergreen. When you dig deeper into Washington’s riding scene, you’ll find a vast community filled with dedicated volunteers, trail builders, coaches, instructors, sponsors, local business owners and land managers. The ecosystem of mountain biking is alive and well in Washington and YOU are an important part of it. For that, we’re thankful… Read on to see what else Evergreen’s full-time crew is thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving! -Evergreen Staff |

“There is so much community to celebrate, and so much collaboration, partnership, innovation, and shared learning to be grateful for here at Evergreen! I'm thankful for the bottomless inspiration by our members, support from our donors, innovation and encouragement from land managers, dedication from our volunteers, and the incredible daily stoke of our riding community. Our partners in conservation, recreation policy, and land management encourage me to do my best every day and I cannot underscore enough how much it means to me to work with you all, for Evergreen, to find balanced, sustainable, and innovative recreation projects and solutions in the "Washington Way." Happy Thanksgiving!” |
||||||||||||
“I’m thankful every day for the many awesome volunteers, builders, staff, partners, trails and landscapes I get to work with every day. It is such a privilege building trails with you all!” |
||||||||||||
“This year I'm thankful for our members. I'm continually blown away by the dedication and support that the community has for mountain biking in Washington. Your support is helping build sweet singletrack and is making Washington THE best state to ride for generations to come! I’ll see you out on the trails!” |
||||||||||||
“As a mountain biker I am thankful for all the years of effort put forth by riders all over the state to make trails happen. Trail access and development of mountain bike trails doesn't just happen, it only happens because of the perseverance of dedicated riders and builders. It's amazing to see the progression of collaboration and the communities being built around the trails. Builders, volunteers, riders, families, businesses, and community leaders all coming together to build and ride together... it's awesome!" |
||||||||||||
“It takes a lot to pull off what Evergreen does. This year marks 30 years of doing great work, and with the organizational changes we've made we aim to be a stronger statewide non-profit for 30 years to come… and more! To do that, it's taken hours of dedicated volunteer leadership to create the vision and strategy and a talented team of employees to pull off these changes along with trusted partners who understand where we're headed. I'm thankful for our Board, staff, land managers, and consultants that make the work we do possible. Here's to the next 30 years!” |
||||||||||||
“I'm thankful for the incredible dedication and expertise our volunteer instructors bring to Evergreen's education program. The combination of passion and skill is what helps students not only be more confident on their bike, but also feel connected to our greater mountain bike community. I have so much to learn from all of them and I'm so grateful for the opportunity!” |
||||||||||||
“I'm thankful for our strong community of volunteers and the numerous land managers that support, encourage, and allow Evergreen to positively impact mountain biking in Washington State. Without devoted volunteers– whether they come to one work party a year or one hundred– our trails would not be in a condition to provide the world class riding experience that we've all become accustomed to. Alongside our volunteers are an incredible group of land managers that take the time and effort to foster trail maintenance and construction efforts on our publicly owned lands. We're living in a mountain bike wonderland!” |
||||||||||||
“I’m thankful for the incredibly supportive riding community we have here in Washington. When I’m on the trail, I always see riders helping each other out. I see experienced riders helping beginners, I see folks giving each other directions, I see friendly waves between complete strangers. Mountain biking puts people in a good mood and I’m thankful for that! |
||||||||||||
“I'm thankful for how passionate and supportive Washington's huge community of mountain bikers is. The contributions of countless people through their hard work on the trail and at events, or through their financial support of Evergreen's trail projects, advocacy initiatives, and education projects is so important to the growing strength of mountain biking here. I'm grateful to be part of a community that doesn't hesitate to chip in, and that is full of people eager to get their hands dirty and help out in one way or another!” |
||||||||||||
“I am amazed and grateful every year as I reflect on our community's accomplishments for mountain biking and recreation in our Central Chapter. It is truly exciting and inspiring to be a part of this passionate community. Thank You! Thank you for your time, your funding, and your dedication to making our chapter and the state a great place to ride.” |

Our Hearts Are Full With Trail Love!Hi Emma,
It's Valentine's Day and there's love in the air. We can feel it! Love for trails. Love for our amazing riding community. Love for our public lands. Love for agency partnerships. Love for bikes of any kind. And, lots of love from our team to you! Thank you members, supporters, and fans for sharing your trail love and helping to make Washington State the best place to ride. Want to add just a little more love into the world of mountain biking? It's easy: Sign up for a work party, warmly greet any and all fellow trail users, and tell your ride buddies how much you appreciate their company and companionship. Most vitally, practice self-love by clearing your schedule regularly to get yourself into the woods to ride, refresh and recharge. This month's newsletter is a good example of how our shared trail love is growing Washington's recreation economy. New Evergreen staff members are hard at work, new trailbuilders (some from Europe!) are on the ground, instructors and coaches are gearing up for another season of teaching lifelong skills to new riders, and dedicated volunteers continue to astound us with their off-the-chart levels of enthusiasm. I'm looking forward to so many more adventures with you all. With love from Yvonne and team...

New Faces In New Places At Evergreen
We're stoked to welcome aboard two new office staff members and a new Chapter President! Bobby Stewart joined last summer as a temporary employee to assist the team while Tara was on maternity leave. He quickly became invaluable to our staff. We're thrilled to announce that Bobby has joined full-time as Evergreen’s Operations and Volunteer Coordinator. David Fleischhauer joined the staff as Evergreen’s new Project Manager. David will be hard at work tracking our rapidly expanding portfolio of trail projects across Washington. Your hands will be full, David! Chris Conley is taking the reigns in the greater Spokane region as the new East Chapter President. Be sure to read this recent interview with Chris to learn more about his background and what’s in store for Spokane’s exploding mountain bike scene. The Evergreen Trail Crew also continues to grow. Welcome aboard Paul Martin, Bill Wallace, Joel Augustine, Tim Ganyard, Colin Leutenegger, and Mitch Prantl! Colin and Mitch are here to build all the way from Switzerland and Austria, so make sure to give them an extra hard high five if you see them out working on the trails. |

Evergreen Trail Talk
Have you ever wondered how wet is just too wet to ride? With recent soggy weather, we’ve been fielding lots of questions from riders wondering whether they’re doing damage to trails by riding in the wet. Check out our "Riding in the Rain: Yay or Nay?" guide to determine whether a trail is just too soggy for a spin. The Evergreen Calendar is chock full of opportunities to volunteer, so now is a great time to put away the bike for a day and join in to help maintain the trails you love. Each year, Evergreen volunteers put in thousands of hours of work to keep trails running great for all to enjoy. Take a look at the 2019 Evergreen Volunteers of the Year if you need a little bit of extra inspiration! These folks went above and beyond to maintain and build trails for Evergreen, and riders like you, last year. Companies like Progression Cycle and Seattle Mountain Bike Tours have also stepped up recently to host work parties on trails local to their area. If you’d like to sponsor a work party, please get in touch with Evergreen’s Bobby Stewart. |

Hi Emma, First and foremost, I hope this message finds you, your friends, and your family healthy and safe. As the entire world is fighting COVID-19, Evergreen’s board of directors, staff, chapters, and volunteers are all leaning into the challenges that this unprecedented situation presents to our small non-profit organization. You can be confident that everyone on the Evergreen team cares deeply for our community, our sport, and will be doing everything possible during these difficult times to get back to normal operations as soon as we can. You are all likely aware of Governor Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order for Washingtonians that was issued on Monday, March 23, 2020 and becomes effective today. The purpose of this order is to slow the spread of the deadly COVID-19 disease. As responsible stewards and members of Washington’s vibrant outdoor community, it is absolutely critical that we, as mountain bikers, help in every way we can to curb the spread of this worldwide pandemic. With that in mind, we implore you as Evergreen supporters to limit travel and only visit trailheads in your immediate neighborhood. It is not the time to be taking unnecessary recreational risks that have the potential to further burden our strained health care system. With the 2-week order to stay at home now in place, our governor is asking we stay put unless “pursuing an essential activity, like shopping for groceries or going to a medical appointment, getting takeout food, going to work at an essential business, and going outside for walks and exercise, as long as social distancing of six feet is maintained.” In Governor Inslee’s Monday evening address, he mentioned “biking” as a viable and acceptable option for getting outside, but the intent was to encourage folks to get out close to their homes for some exercise and fresh air. If you do get out for a ride, please consider the following points:
As we move forward, we are committed to keeping our members informed about potential affects this pandemic will inevitably have on Evergreen and your ability to access the trails that you love to ride. As a reminder, all Evergreen events are canceled statewide through at least April 26th. As we near that date, board and staff will reevaluate to decide on the viability of future events and programs. Our top priorities right now are keeping staff employed, keeping trail projects viable, and making sure that everyone is safe. We feel confident that Evergreen is well positioned to weather this storm, but with news changing every day and the extreme uncertainty of every aspect of life, we are not letting our guard down. We are carefully focusing on our finances to ensure that we will be able to emerge on the other side of this in the best position possible to continue to deliver on our mission of making Washington the best place to ride. And, rest assured, our team is already working on ways to make this tumultuous period a time of Evergreen innovation, not Evergreen setback. Together, we’ll get through this! Be well,

Updates from the Evergreen Home Office frontlines... |

Hi Emma, As a mountain biker, you seek out challenges. You avoid the easy path. The rougher the trail the more rewarding your ride. You progress with endurance, tenacity, and a can-do attitude. Here at Evergreen, we’re emulating your collective strong trail spirit to help us get through the current rough and rocky trail. Our thoughts are with you as we navigate these challenging times, and we are comforted in knowing that we couldn't have a better support system than you. Our community connections, you, and trails motivate us to work as hard as we can to continue to deliver great mountain bike trails, advocacy, maintenance, and education services beyond this crisis. Organizationally, we remain committed to making this uncertain period a time of innovation, not setback. Read on to learn more about what we're doing and send us your ideas and suggestions! We may be riding solo right now, but we can still engage and advocate together. Take care of your loved ones and communities first, then consider donating, taking advocacy action, renewing your membership, or contacting me on any of the below topics. As I write this inside while the sun shines and the temperature creeps above 60 degrees, I find comfort in knowing that our collective effort to stay home is saving lives and will ultimately lead to a return to what we love most: Riding and sharing the joy of mountain biking together! Be well,

What We’re Working On…• Advocating for Trails! Planning and policy meetings continue. And your action and input is still needed! Here are two actions you can take today:
• Working to Retain Staff and Trail Crew. We filed a request with the State to allow our crew back to work, in limited capacity, on new trail construction projects. Our goal is to get our trail crew going as soon as we safely can, and ensure the trails are ready for you when the Stay Home, Stay Healthy restrictions end. Until then, most trail crew remain on standby unemployment. Want to send an encouraging message to help keep our spirits up? Email staff@evergreenmtb.org, we would all love to hear from you! • Contingency Planning. We’re planning cash flow, we’ve applied for the SBA payroll protection loan, and created pivot plans for all 2020 programs to ensure we are left financially whole at the end of the year. We’re also working to reshape upcoming fundraisers to focus on overall organizational health. Stay tuned for updates on our annual #GiveBig campaign, coming up soon on May 5th and 6th. With your continued support, we will get through this! • Informing Riders about Trail Closures and Best Practices for Riding. Last month, we put forth recommendations for how to ride responsibly. We continue to monitor and work with land managers to relay information about closures. Remember, many trails, parks, and forests in Washington are closed. Staying home is what's best. If you do choose to ride, it’s critical that you ride from home, ride solo, and check your land manager’s website for trail closure notices before heading out. • Connecting Online. Earlier this week, we launched a new Evergreen "Virtual" calendar category. You can now create and join online mountain bike community meetups using our calendar. We’ve already had some fun ones, including a presentation on bikepacking in Morocco from Evergreen’s Education Program Manager, Kristen McCune! Hi Emma, Grip the handlebars, point your bike straight, and just hope for the best– we’ve all been there when faced with a tricky trail situation. And for the past few months, planning for the upcoming Evergreen Mountain Bike Festival has felt similar. Managing vendors, opening ticket sales, organizing volunteers and promoting an event that draws well over 3,000 visitors each year, all while in the middle of a global pandemic, has left us feeling about as “in control” as a run down your steepest local trail in late August. So, with heavy hearts we’ve made the tough decision to cancel the 2020 Evergreen Mountain Bike Festival that was originally slated for June 13-14 at Duthie Hill Park in Issaquah. The annual event is a hallmark of Evergreen’s community programs and serves as an important annual fundraiser and source of community stoke. This cancellation is also a bummer for our awesome vendors, many of whom have told us that our festival is their busiest demo event of the entire season. We don’t take this lightly, and we’re working on finding new ways to allow the local riding community to connect and ask questions of these top brands and reps. In fact, we want to hear from you. Do you have ideas for an all-online Evergreen Mountain Bike Festival? Please share your thoughts if so!
Share Your Virtual MTB Fest Ideas!
Later on, in June, we’re also looking into hosting an online fundraiser to auction off products that were donated by vendors for use in this year’s festival raffle. Stay tuned for more information and stay healthy! Like you, we can’t wait to get back to normal riding and sharing the stoke as a community. Give Big FundraiserWe’re going to take a financial hit by not hosting our usual festival this year, but the safety and health of the local riding community is our foremost concern. To help recoup this lost fundraising opportunity, we’re asking everyone to please consider supporting our GiveBig fundraiser on May 5-6. Early giving is open now. Our friends at Clif Bar are longtime sponsors of the Evergreen Mountain Bike Festival and they’ve already stepped up to offer $6,500 in matching funds for GiveBig. Thank you…
